UTIs: Not Just from Bathrooms, But Your Fridge Too! – Here’s how…

UTI

A recent US study has unveiled a surprising connection between contaminated meat and the rising incidence of Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs), shedding new light on a widespread health issue affecting millions of women worldwide.

What is UTI?

It’s a common type of infection that affects any part of the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Most UTIs affect the lower urinary tract — the bladder and urethra — but more severe cases can spread to the kidneys.

Why UTI is caused?

Some of the factors, which lead to cause can be when bacteria enter the urinary tract through the urethra and begin to multiply in the bladder. The bacteria E coli, which normally resides in the intestines, is responsible for most of these infections. Factors such as poor hygiene, sexual activity, and certain health conditions can increase the risk of developing the infection.

UTIs, which afflict 60% of women at least once in their lifetime, have seen a dramatic 70% increase in cases between 1990 and 2019. This surge has prompted researchers to investigate potential causes beyond the well-known risk factors

How do refrigerators cause UTIs?

The 2023 study reveals a startling statistic: approximately 500,000 UTIs in the US annually may be linked to Escherichia coli (E. coli) contaminated meat. Even more alarming, between 30% and 70% of meat products sold in stores reportedly contain E. coli.

Dr. Tripti Raheja, lead consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, explains, “Consumption of E. coli-contaminated meat can introduce these bacteria into the intestines, from where they may travel to the urinary tract, causing infection.”

However, the scientific community urges caution in interpreting these results. Dr. Matthew Sims, director of infectious diseases research at Corewell Health, emphasizes that the study shows an association, not necessarily causation.

The widespread use of antibiotics in livestock farming has emerged as a significant concern, potentially contributing to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in humans. This resistance complicates UTI treatment, making infections harder to manage.

Dr. Deepika Aggarwal, director of obstetrics and gynaecology at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, warns about the dangers of untreated UTIs: “Serious side effects of kidney infections include irreversible kidney damage and sepsis, a potentially life-threatening response to infection.”

Is UTI the lone disease caused by stored meat or food?

While the meat-UTI connection is still being debated, experts agree that multiple factors contribute to the rise in UTI cases. Dr. Jennifer Wider, a women’s health specialist, points to “higher rates of diabetes, an ageing population, and the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria” as additional contributors.

Dr. Tarun Singh, a urologist at Sharda Hospital, Delhi, highlights anatomical factors: “In women, the shorter urethra allows bacteria easier access to the bladder.” He also notes that sexual activity and certain contraceptives can increase the risk of UTIs.

How UTI can be prevented?

Prevention remains key in combating UTIs. Experts recommend maintaining good hygiene, staying hydrated, and being cautious about antibiotic use. For those experiencing recurrent UTIs, consulting with a healthcare professional is crucial to identify underlying causes and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

The study’s findings have broader implications for public health and food safety. Consumers are advised to be vigilant about food handling and preparation, with thorough cooking of meat and proper hygiene practices helping to mitigate the risk of E. coli transmission.

As research continues, the medical community remains vigilant in monitoring the evolving landscape of UTIs and their potential causes. This study serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between our diet, environment, and health, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to UTI prevention and treatment.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Reported under Suicide Watch

0

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is reportedly under suicide watch as he awaits trial at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, according to People.

Sources indicate that Combs is under heightened supervision following his arrest at a Manhattan hotel on Monday, September 16. He faces multiple charges, including sex trafficking, racketeering, and transporting individuals for prostitution.

The indictment alleges that Combs orchestrated and coerced victims into participating in “freak offs,” which prosecutors describe as “elaborate and staged sexual performances.” His attorney, Marc Agnifilo, confirmed that Combs is being held in a special housing unit with “extra security.”

The U.S. Department of Justice’s National Institute of Corrections defines suicide watch as requiring frequent observation of inmates considered at risk. On September 17, after pleading not guilty and being denied bail twice, Combs was remanded to MDC. While it is unclear if Combs is actively suicidal, People reported that the suicide watch was implemented as a precaution due to his shock over the bail denials and concerns about his mental state.

The case draws parallels to Jeffrey Epstein, who was under suicide watch at a New York City jail before taking his own life in August 2019. Despite a previous suicide attempt, Epstein was left unattended with extra bed linens, and most of the surveillance cameras in his unit were not recording.

In 2023, the Department of Justice’s watchdog concluded that negligence, misconduct, and poor job performance at the federal Bureau of Prisons contributed to Epstein’s death.

Combs’ attorney has requested his transfer to a facility in Essex County, New Jersey, citing concerns over conditions at MDC, where four inmates have died by suicide in the past three years. The lawyer argued that MDC’s conditions are “unfit for pre-trial detention.”

Ambedkar’s Great Grandson Says BJP Forced Comments Against Rahul Gandhi

0

B.R. Ambedkar’s great-grandson, Rajratna Ambedkar, has claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) approached him to protest against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent remarks on reservations made during his visit to the United States. In a video shared on social media, Rajratna alleges that BJP members pressured him for two days to stage protests, but he refused to comply.

“The country’s largest party asked me to protest and hold dharnas against Rahul Gandhi’s statements. I was pressured for two days, but I didn’t hold any protests and won’t do so. My movement is funded by society, and only society can direct me, not the BJP,” Rajratna said in the video posted on Instagram.

Supporting Rahul Gandhi’s stance, Rajratna added, “If someone is truly an Ambedkarite, why would they have an issue with what Rahul Gandhi said? We believe reservation should remain until social discrimination ends. We want to move beyond reservations, but is now the right time? This is what Rahul Gandhi has pointed out.”

He further clarified, “I am neither a supporter of Rahul Gandhi nor the Congress party, but on this issue, there’s no reason to oppose Rahul Gandhi. For me, Congress and the BJP are the same. But we must understand the right basis for holding protests.”

A video clip featuring Rajratna’s remarks was shared on social media, with one user highlighting his resistance to the BJP’s pressure. “He is Dr. Rajratna Ambedkar, Babasaheb’s great-grandson, explaining how the BJP tried to create confusion against reservation and Rahul Gandhi. As a true Ambedkarite, he found nothing wrong in Rahul’s statement,” the post read in Hindi.

What did Rahul Gandhi say about reservation?
During his visit to the U.S., Rahul Gandhi said India could consider ending the reservation system only when it becomes a truly “fair place” with equal opportunities for all sections of society. He remarked, “90 per cent of India—OBCs, Dalits, and Adivasis—don’t play the game.”

However, BJP leaders accused Rahul Gandhi of making “anti-national” statements on foreign soil, criticizing his position on reservation. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh claimed that Rahul was aligning with forces “conspiring to divide India.” Additionally, BJP members and Sikh leaders protested outside Gandhi’s residence in Delhi over his alleged “anti-Sikh” remarks.

In response to the backlash, Rahul Gandhi clarified that he is not against reservation and that, if his party comes to power, they would extend reservations beyond the current 50 per cent limit. “Yesterday, someone misrepresented my statement as being against reservation. But let me be clear—I support reservation, and we will go beyond the 50 per cent limit,” he said.

Supreme Court’s Youtube Channel Gets Hacked for Cryptocurrency Scam

0

The YouTube channel of the Supreme Court of India appears to have been hacked, currently displaying videos promoting XRP, a cryptocurrency developed by Ripple Labs, a US-based company.

The Supreme Court has been using its YouTube channel to stream hearings of significant cases, including those heard by Constitution Benches and matters of public interest. Recently, it streamed live hearings of the suo motu case concerning the rape and murder at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. However, hackers seem to have made previous hearing videos private. Currently, a blank video titled “Brad Garlinghouse: Ripple Responds To The SEC’s $2 Billion Fine! XRP PRICE PREDICTION” is being live-streamed on the hacked channel.

It’s worth noting that hacking of popular video channels by scammers is widespread, with Ripple itself having sued YouTube for failing to prevent scammers from impersonating its CEO, Brad Garlinghouse. According to a report by The Verge, “in recent months, scammers have created official-sounding accounts for Ripple and its CEO. Some accounts were stolen from successful YouTubers with large followings, allowing scammers to post videos promising large XRP rewards in exchange for smaller initial payments, deceiving viewers who thought they were watching Ripple’s official channel.”

Arijit Singh, currently touring in the UK, recently addressed a fan’s request to perform his protest song “Aar Kobe,” which he wrote in memory of a rape and murder victim from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. The moment was shared on Instagram by user rahul__roy983, featuring a clip from one of Arijit’s shows.

Arijit pauses his performance to respond
While singing “Ramta Jogi” from Taal, Arijit was asked to perform “Aar Kobe.” He paused and said, “This isn’t the right place. People haven’t come here to protest, they’ve come to listen to me. That’s my job. The song you mentioned is close to my heart, but this isn’t the right time or place.”

He went on to say, “If you really care, go to Kolkata. There are many Bengalis here—take action on the streets. That song isn’t monetized and never will be. It’s not copyrighted. Anyone can use it.” After resuming his performance, he reiterated, “The song is not monetized… anyone can use it.” The video caption read, “Arijit Singh gets annoyed when a fan requests him to perform ‘Aar Kobe,’ a protest song he created following the events in Kolkata.”

The release of “Aar Kobe”
Arijit released “Aar Kobe” on his YouTube channel on August 28, crediting himself as the lyricist and composer. The song is dedicated to the victim and “all women who face the horrors of gender-based violence,” according to its official description.

The description adds, “This song is a cry for justice, a lament for the countless women who suffer in silence, and a demand for change. It also honors the voices of doctors nationwide who continue to serve despite the risks they face. This is more than just a protest song—it is a call to action, a reminder that the fight for women’s safety and dignity is ongoing. As we sing, we remember the tireless efforts of doctors, journalists, and students who deserve not just our respect but also our protection.”

The woman, a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College, was raped and murdered on August 9 in the seminar hall. A civic volunteer with Kolkata Police was later arrested.

According to the reports, the exams are expected to begin in February and will conclude in April. CBSE is conducting the board exams on February 15 since 2023. During the pandemic in 2021, the exams were conducted from May 4 to June 4 and in 2022 the board exams were held from April 26 to May 24

Some instructions about Board Exams

The exams will be held in pen and paper format. The CBSE will also release it dates for the practical examinations separately. The practical exam for Class 12 will be held under the supervision of an external examiner visiting schools, however, the Class 10 practical exam will be conducted in the presence of school teachers only.

Biannual Exams:

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is considering a significant change to its examination system, exploring the possibility of implementing biannual exams for Classes 10 and 12. Currently, the board exams are held in February-March.

While consultations are ongoing, no final decision has been made regarding the timing or format of the proposed biannual exams.

The CBSE has informed the Union education ministry that implementing such a system would require over 150 steps within the current framework.

The initial plan to introduce biannual board exams from the 2024-25 academic session has been postponed by a year.

The proposal for a semester system for Classes 11 and 12 aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and was developed by the national steering committee led by former ISRO chairman K Kasturirangan.

Was Mohamed al-Fayed a Predator? New Allegations Surface Against Billionaire

Mohamed al-Fayed
Mohamed al-Fayed

Mohamed al-Fayed, the late Egyptian billionaire and former owner of Harrods, has been accused of rape and sexual abuse by multiple former employees, according to a new BBC documentary titled “al-Fayed: Predator at Harrods.” The documentary, which aired recently, presents allegations from several women who claim they were victimized by al-Fayed during their employment at the luxury department store.

Is Mohamed al-Fayed a womanizer?

The investigation reveals that at least five women allege they were raped by al-Fayed, while a minimum of 15 others report experiencing sexual abuse. These incidents are said to have occurred across various locations, including London, Paris, Saint-Tropez, and Abu Dhabi.

One of the accusers, who was a teenager at the time, described being raped in al-Fayed’s apartment. She characterized him as “a monster, a sexual predator with no moral compass.” Three other women corroborated similar experiences of alleged rape in the same location.

A fifth accuser recounted an incident in Paris at al-Fayed’s Villa Windsor apartment, where she claims she was raped and then instructed to cleanse herself with disinfectant, an act she interpreted as an attempt to erase evidence of the encounter.

How do the victims make their stand clear?

The documentary’s producers noted that these women came forward after viewing al-Fayed’s portrayal in the Netflix series “The Crown,” which depicted his son Dodi’s relationship with Princess Diana following her divorce from Prince Charles. Al-Fayed, who died in 2023 at the age of 94, had previously engaged in a protracted legal battle attempting to prove the British Royal Family’s involvement in the 1997 car crash that claimed the lives of Diana and Dodi.

In response to these allegations, Harrods, which al-Fayed owned from 1985 to 2010 before selling to Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund, issued a statement expressing shock and condemnation. The company acknowledged past failures in protecting employees and offered a sincere apology to the victims.

Harrods emphasized that the current organization differs significantly from the one under al-Fayed’s ownership, stating that employee welfare is now central to their operations. The company also revealed that since becoming aware of this information in 2023, they have prioritized settling claims expeditiously.

‘We can’t undo the past but…’

“While we cannot undo the past, we have been determined to do the right thing as an organisation, driven by the values we hold today while ensuring that such behaviour can never be repeated in the future,” Harrods stated.

These allegations against al-Fayed represent a stark contrast to his public image and legacy as a prominent businessman. The accusations highlight the ongoing challenges in addressing historical cases of abuse and the importance of creating safe work environments. As the story continues to unfold, it may prompt further discussions about power dynamics in the workplace and the long-term impact of sexual abuse on survivors.

Kolkata Doctors End Protest, Essential Services to Resume on Saturday

After 41 days of protesting against the rape and murder of the trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the junior doctors have called off their strike and will now resume essential services in the hospitals from September 21.

Will junior doctors call off their strike against rape-murder case?

According to the reports, the Doctors will conduct a rally from Swasthya Bhawan to the CBI office today at 3 pm, urging the CBI to expedite the probe into the Kolkata rape-murder case.

“We are calling off the protest from here and will do a rally till CBI office today at 3 pm. CBI needs to expedite the case of murder and rape. We will get back to work on Saturday as there is a flood, and we need to help people. But there are dharna manchas at all our medical colleges where we will sit as well. We will start all our essential services from Saturday. Everything under essential services will be taken care of,” the protesting doctor said.

Protestors wait for a response by govt.

Notably, this development followed after they submitted a draft outlining the key highlights from their discussions with the West Bengal govt. to Chief Secretary Manoj Pant on Thursday. Now, the agitating doctors are waiting for the state’s response to their proposals.

As per the reports, the second round of the meetings between the state public healthcare task force, led by the Chief Secretary – Manoj Pant, and a delegation of at least 30 junior doctors took place at the state secretariat, Nabanna.

Will CM Mamata Banerjee approve protesters’ demands?

Meanwhile, the first round of the meeting was held at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence in Kolkata on Monday. During the meeting, the Banerjee-led govt. agreed on the key demands of the junior doctors that the infrastructure of the state-run hospitals should be developed.

Since the day of the heart-wrenching rape-murder case incident, West Bengal was shrouded under dark clouds, leading to a massive agitation against the crime and subsequent allegations of widespread corruption at the government healthcare facilities.
