Trump Gets a Gift From Police Officers After Second Assassination Attempt

0

Donald Trump recently received a surprising gift from Martin County Deputies, who had arrested the gunman responsible for a second assassination attempt on him.

On Sunday, 58-year-old suspect Ryan Wesley Routh was apprehended after a Secret Service agent spotted a rifle through the fence at Trump’s golf course near West Palm Beach, Florida, where the former president was playing.

Routh fled when the agent fired, but was later arrested after someone captured a photo of his license plate and reported it to authorities.

As a gesture, the Martin County Deputies signed the handcuffs used to arrest Routh and presented them to Trump. Following the arrest, Trump hosted the deputies at Mar-a-Lago, praising them, “That’s good-looking stuff right there,” reported WPTV. “That’s good-looking human beings.” He then shook hands with the deputies and Sheriff William Snyder before inviting them for lunch at Mar-a-Lago.

Sheriff Snyder later revealed what Trump told him during the meeting. Initially, investigators believed Routh was carrying an AK-47-style weapon, but it was later confirmed to be an SKS-style rifle. Snyder told WPTV that coordination with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office played a crucial role in apprehending Routh.

“I spoke with the president today, and he said he can rest easier knowing that someone who was planning to kill him, or try to kill him, is now in custody. That’s as rewarding as anything I’ve ever done,” Snyder said.

According to the deputies, Routh remained calm and cooperative during his arrest, despite being surrounded by several officers.

Routh now faces charges for possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number and for being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun. During a press conference on Tuesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is competing against Trump in the Republican primary, suggested that Routh could face additional state-level charges.

Rajnath Singh Requests Navy to Prepare for Upcoming Challenges

0

NEW DELHI: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday highlighted India’s growing stature as a preferred security partner in the Indian Ocean region, while commending the navy’s efforts in maintaining peace across the strategic area. He also urged the force to remain vigilant amid a volatile global environment.

Speaking at the Naval Commanders’ Conference, Singh remarked, “A significant portion of the world’s trade passes through this region, making it highly valuable. However, challenges such as piracy, hijacking, drone and missile attacks, and the disruption of sea cable connections add to its sensitivity.”

Singh praised the Indian Navy’s critical role in safeguarding the economic interests of Indo-Pacific nations and ensuring the smooth movement of goods in the Indian Ocean, particularly noting the international recognition of its anti-piracy efforts. However, he cautioned against complacency and encouraged the navy to stay prepared for evolving geopolitical and regional security challenges.

The conference, chaired by Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, concludes on Friday.

Singh also noted that over two-thirds of the navy’s modernization budget in the past five years has been spent on indigenous procurement, leading to accelerated growth of the domestic defence industry. He urged the navy leadership to further enhance the Atmanirbharta (self-reliance) initiative, aiming for full self-sufficiency by 2047.

In a statement, the defence ministry emphasized the conference’s importance, set against the backdrop of shifting geopolitical landscapes, regional challenges, and complex maritime security issues in West Asia.

Singh also underscored the need for jointness and efficient use of resources, referencing the Joint Commanders’ Conference on September 5 in Lucknow. There, he advocated for a unified vision to prepare for future conflicts and deliver coordinated, swift, and proportional responses to threats. The military is set to present its theaterisation model blueprint to the government for approval soon.

Supreme Court Slams Telecom Companies’ Petition on AGR Dues

0

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has rejected curative petitions filed by telecom companies, including Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, challenging an October 2019 ruling that mandates them to pay over ₹1 lakh crore in adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

The court’s decision on the curative petitions was made on August 30 and uploaded to its website on Thursday. In the order, a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud stated, “We have reviewed the Curative Petitions and accompanying documents. In our view, no case is made out within the parameters established in the 2002 Rupa Ashok Hurra v Ashok Hurra decision.” The 2002 ruling defines the criteria for accepting a review or curative petition if a court’s decision has an apparent error or causes manifest injustice.

The bench, which also included Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai, made its decision in chambers and denied the telecom companies’ request for a public hearing.

The curative petitions contested the court’s October 24, 2019 verdict that allowed the DoT to include non-telecom revenue in the AGR calculation.

Based on the figures presented to the court, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea were required to pay ₹43,980 crore and ₹58,254 crore, respectively. Other companies facing AGR dues included Reliance Telecom (₹25,199 crore), Tata Group (₹16,798 crore), and Aircel (₹12,389 crore). Review petitions from these companies were dismissed in January 2020.

Facing massive liabilities that threatened their operations and with some companies—Aircel, Reliance Telecom, Sistema Shyam, and Videocon Telecommunications—undergoing insolvency proceedings, the government proposed in March 2020 that the AGR dues be paid in 20 equal instalments.

The Supreme Court partially accepted this request on September 1, 2020, allowing telecom firms to pay the dues over 10 annual instalments from April 2021 to March 2031. Companies were also required to pay penalties and interest in the event of default, with the risk of contempt of court proceedings.

Since this order modified the 2019 judgment, the curative petitions effectively challenged this revised decision.

During the 2020 proceedings, the government revised the total outstanding dues to over ₹1.43 lakh crore. Bharti Airtel had paid ₹18,000 crore, leaving ₹25,976 crore outstanding, while Vodafone Idea had deposited ₹3,500 crore, with ₹54,754 crore remaining unpaid. Tata still owed over ₹12,600 crore. Even state-owned telecom providers BSNL and MTNL had dues of ₹5,835 crore and ₹4,352 crore, respectively.

The current consolidated dues are not clear.

To clarify, AGR is a revenue-sharing model based on a policy framed under the Indian Telegraph Act, which grants the government exclusive rights over telecommunications. The October 2019 judgment upheld the government’s stance that various revenue streams should be included in AGR calculations.

Telecom companies had previously self-assessed their AGR dues and reported figures far lower than the amounts calculated by the DoT. However, the September 2020 judgment closed the door on any future reassessment, stating that telecom operators could not challenge the DoT’s AGR demands or seek re-assessment.

Mark Zuckerberg Ends his Daughter’s Dream of Becoming Taylor Swift

0

Mark Zuckerberg may have gently dashed his daughter’s hopes of becoming the next Taylor Swift. The Meta founder recently shared that his seven-year-old daughter once expressed a desire to be like the famous pop star. However, he quickly told her ‘No,’ implying that such a career path was not realistic for her. Interestingly, Zuckerberg himself is a devoted fan of Swift and even took his family to one of her concerts, spending quite a bit for the experience.

Mark Zuckerberg Says ‘No’ to His Daughter’s Taylor Swift Dream

Earlier this month, Zuckerberg appeared on the “Acquired” podcast, where he recounted a moment that ended his middle child’s dream of following in Taylor Swift’s footsteps.

“We took her to a Taylor Swift concert, and she said, ‘Dad, I kind of want to be like Taylor Swift when I grow up,’” Zuckerberg shared during the interview, which aired on September 10. The tech mogul, who was asked about the importance of originality, recalled how he responded to his daughter, August—who interestingly shares a name with a track from Swift’s Folklore album.

“I told her, ‘But you can’t. That’s not something available to you.’ And after thinking about it, she said, ‘Okay, then I want people to want to be like August Chan Zuckerberg when I grow up.’ And I was like, ‘Hell yeah.’”

Is Mark Zuckerberg a Swiftie?

It turns out he is. While Zuckerberg didn’t provide a clear reason for why his daughter couldn’t pursue such a high level of fame, he openly shared his admiration for Swift and her music.

In July 2023, he attended Swift’s Eras Tour in Santa Clara with his wife, Priscilla, and their daughters. He even posted a photo of himself wearing friendship bracelets and decorative gemstones, captioned, “Life of a girl dad.” The couple shares three daughters: Maxima (8), August (6), and Aurelia (13 months). Though Zuckerberg and Swift come from vastly different industries—technology and music—they both share billionaire status.

Taylor Swift and Mark Zuckerberg’s Political Endorsements

While Zuckerberg hasn’t publicly endorsed any candidates for the upcoming elections, Taylor Swift has already thrown her support behind Kamala Harris. On the other hand, Zuckerberg recently criticized the Biden-Harris administration in a letter to a U.S. House committee, expressing regret for succumbing to government pressure to “censor” content on Facebook and Instagram during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although his company made the decisions, Zuckerberg emphasized that the “government pressure was wrong.”

Yash Raj Film Congratulates Stree 2 Team For Phenomenal Run at Box Office

0

Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao’s Stree 2 is enjoying a stellar run at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film in India. It has even surpassed the collections of Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone’s Pathaan. The makers of Stree 2 have now received praise from Yash Raj Films (YRF), the studio behind Pathaan.

YRF’s Shoutout

In response to Stree 2‘s tremendous success, YRF extended their heartfelt congratulations to the team. On Thursday, the production house shared a special message on social media, applauding the team’s achievements and acknowledging their milestone.

“Heartiest congratulations to Dinesh Vijan, Maddock Films, Jio Studios, & the entire cast & crew of Stree 2 for this massive box office success,” read the note.

The message further added, “You have set a new benchmark for everyone to aspire to. The last two years have been phenomenal for Hindi cinema, and the industry couldn’t be more thrilled.”

Stree 2 has raked in over ₹586 crore at the Indian box office, surpassing the collection of Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan. The film’s lifetime collection in Hindi is ₹582.31 crore, while Pathaan‘s Hindi version stands at ₹524.53 crore.

Fans React

As soon as YRF’s post went live, fans shared their opinions. Some users critiqued YRF for their previous films like Shamshera, while others offered suggestions for improvement.

One user commented, “From the Spy universe to the Stree universe,” while another advised, “You guys will find success if you focus more on storytelling rather than films like Shamshera and Thugs.”

Several comments highlighted the importance of strong content, with one reading, “It’s all about the power of content-driven films.” Another user chimed in, “Good writing can make all the difference.”

A few social media users took the opportunity to request YRF to cast Shraddha Kapoor in their upcoming projects. “We want to see Shraddha in YRF films now, especially opposite SRK and Hrithik,” wrote one fan, while another said, “Shraddha Kapoor is a lady superstar.”

Another fan urged, “It’s time for Shraddha to star in a YRF film. Don’t you think?” Others echoed the sentiment, with one posting, “Shraddha Kapoor supremacy,” and another pleading, “Please cast Shraddha in a quintessential YRF movie. It’s long overdue.”

Centre has ‘Taken up the complaint’ for EY Pune’s Tragic Death

0

Union Minister of State, Shobha Karandlaje, announced on Thursday that the labour ministry is investigating the death of 26-year-old Ernst & Young (EY) employee Anna Sebastian Perayil, following a complaint. Perayil, a chartered accountant from Kerala, reportedly died due to work-related stress, as claimed by her mother in an email to EY India’s chairman, Rajiv Memani.

“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Anna Sebastian Perayil. A thorough investigation into the allegations of an unsafe and exploitative work environment is underway. We are committed to ensuring justice, and @LabourMinistry has officially taken up the complaint,” the minister for micro, small and medium enterprises, as well as labour and employment, posted on X.

Karandlaje was responding to a post by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who expressed his sorrow and concern over the death, calling it “disturbing at many levels.” He urged the government to investigate the family’s claims about an exploitative work environment at EY India.

“This is very sad but also disturbing at many levels. I request the Government of India @mansukhmandviya @ShobhaBJP to investigate these allegations made by the mother of unsafe and exploitative work environment that claimed the life of young, full of future Anna Sebastian,” Chandrasekhar posted.

Perayil, who passed her CA exams in 2023, had been working at EY’s Pune office for four months before her death. Her mother, Anita Augustine, recently wrote to Rajiv Memani, criticizing the “glorification” of overwork at the firm.

In a statement on Wednesday, EY expressed deep sadness over Perayil’s passing in July 2024. The company stated that it has been in contact with the family since the incident and has offered assistance. However, the family recently raised concerns about the “excessive workload.”

EY pledged to continue its efforts to improve the workplace environment across its offices in India. “Anna was part of the Audit team at S R Batliboi, a member firm of EY Global, in Pune for a brief period of four months, joining the firm on 18 March 2024. That her promising career was cut short in this tragic manner is an irreparable loss for all of us,” the firm said.

While acknowledging that nothing could compensate for the family’s loss, EY reaffirmed its commitment to providing support. “We are taking the family’s correspondence with the utmost seriousness and humility. We place the highest importance on the well-being of all employees and will continue to find ways to improve and ensure a healthy workplace for our 100,000 people across EY member firms in India,” the statement added.

Tupperware Files Bankruptcy: Will it be the End of Beloved Household Brand?

Tupperware

Tupperware, the iconic household brand known for its food storage containers, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company, founded in 1946 by chemist Earl Tupper, has been a staple in kitchens worldwide for decades but has recently faced significant financial challenges.

Is Tupperware bankrupt?

On Tuesday, Tupperware Brands and several of its subsidiaries submitted bankruptcy filings in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

The company reported assets between $500 million and $1 billion, with liabilities ranging from $1 billion to $10 billion. The number of creditors is estimated to be between 50,000 and 100,000.

Here’s what official said:

Laurie Ann Goldman, Tupperware’s president and CEO, cited a “challenging macroeconomic environment” as a major factor in the company’s financial decline. In a statement, she explained that after exploring various strategic options, filing for bankruptcy was deemed the best path forward.

The company’s stock price has plummeted, trading at just $0.5099 on Monday, a significant drop from $2.55 in December 2022. This decline follows a warning issued by the company last year about “substantial doubt” regarding its ability to continue operations due to financial difficulties.

What is the current strategy of Tupperware?

Despite these challenges, Tupperware plans to continue operating throughout the bankruptcy proceedings. The company intends to pay its employees and suppliers while seeking court approval for a sale process. This strategy aims to protect the Tupperware brand and facilitate a transition towards becoming a more digital-first, tech-focused enterprise.

Goldman reassured customers that the company will continue to provide “the high-quality products they love and trust throughout this process.” Tupperware’s management team, appointed last year, believes it has made progress in modernizing operations and improving efficiency. The company hopes to build on these efforts to revitalize the brand.

Will filing for bankruptcy be beneficial for Tupperware?

The bankruptcy filing marks a significant turning point for Tupperware, which has been a cultural icon since its inception. The company’s airtight seal design revolutionized food storage, helping families reduce food waste during a time when it was a major concern. For generations, Tupperware containers have been associated with packed lunches and home-cooked meals, often accompanied by parental reminders not to lose them.

As Tupperware navigates this challenging period, the company’s future remains uncertain. However, its management remains committed to adapting to changing market conditions and preserving the brand’s legacy.

Coco Guaff Breaks Away from Coach After Grand Slam Title

0

Coco Gauff has parted ways with coach Brad Gilbert after more than a year together, which included winning one Grand Slam title. The news was shared through separate social media posts by both Gauff and Gilbert.

The split comes just 2 1/2 weeks after Gauff’s title defense at the 2023 U.S. Open ended in disappointment, with a fourth-round loss to Emma Navarro, where Gauff struggled with 19 double-faults, ultimately losing 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at Flushing Meadows.

This loss on September 1 was the latest in a string of underwhelming results for the 20-year-old American, who has dropped from No. 3 to No. 6 in the WTA rankings in recent months. Gauff had a breakthrough after a first-round exit at Wimbledon last year, during which her game improved significantly under the guidance of Gilbert and co-coach Pere Riba. However, Riba was not coaching her this year. During her remarkable 2023 season, Gauff went on a 22-1 run, securing titles in Washington, Cincinnati, and her first major championship at the U.S. Open, all while still in her teens.

On Wednesday, Gilbert posted a message on social media thanking Gauff and her team for “an absolutely amazing summer run in 2023 and for 14 months of incredible team effort.” He added, “Coco, at just 20 years young, your future is incredibly bright, and I wish you nothing but continued success ahead. I’m excited for the next chapter in my coaching career.”

Gauff also thanked Gilbert in her own message, saying, “We had an incredible run and I wish you all the best in the future!”

Their collaboration also included Gauff’s semifinal appearances at the Australian Open in January and the French Open in June, where she lost to the eventual champions.

At Wimbledon in July, Gauff was eliminated in the fourth round by Navarro, and during the match, there was some mid-match discussion between Gauff and Gilbert over alternative strategies. “I felt like I wanted more direction,” Gauff said afterward.

She later exited the Paris Olympics in the third round of singles, having served as the female flag bearer for the U.S. team. Gauff also faced losses in both women’s and mixed doubles in her second matches on the same day.

Leading up to her return to the U.S. Open, Gauff went 1-2 at the Toronto and Cincinnati Open hard court events after transitioning from red clay.

Bollywood actor Salman Khan‘s father, Salim Khan, was subjected to a new threat on Thursday morning while on a walk near his Bandra residence. According to reports, a man and a woman in a burqa, riding a scooter, approached Salim Khan and issued a threat, citing the name of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

Salman Khan’s father gets threat in Mumbai

The woman reportedly asked, “Should I send Lawrence Bishnoi?”, while Salim Khan was sitting on a bench. The incident has prompted a swift investigation by the Mumbai Police, who are searching for the individuals involved.

Bishnoi gang history with Salman Khan

This is not the first time Salman Khan has faced threats from the Bishnoi gang. In June of this year, police successfully foiled a plot to kill the actor at his Panvel farmhouse. Four shooters affiliated with the gang were arrested in connection with the attempted murder.

In April, another shooting incident occurred outside Salman Khan’s Bandra home, with two assailants firing multiple rounds. Although no one was injured, fugitive gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s brother, Anmol Bishnoi, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Was the attack a conspiracy?

Navi Mumbai Circle DCP Vivek Pansare revealed that the arrested individuals had conducted reconnaissance of both Salman Khan’s farmhouse and his Bandra residence, indicating a well-planned conspiracy.

He also mentioned that over 20 people were involved in the plot, with the arrested men playing key roles in the planning and execution of the attempted attacks.
