Disney’s Second Round of Layoffs; 300 Jobs Lost

0

In another wave of layoffs in the United States, Disney has announced further job cuts as part of its ongoing cost-saving measures.

According to Deadline, nearly 300 employees have been affected in this latest round, with more layoffs expected. The cuts primarily impact Disney’s corporate functions, including legal, HR, finance, and communications, while other divisions like ESPN, parks, and Disney Entertainment remain unaffected for now.

A Disney spokesperson told Deadline, “We continually evaluate ways to invest in our businesses and manage resources and costs more effectively to drive the creativity and innovation that consumers expect from Disney. As part of this ongoing optimization, we have reviewed the cost structure of our corporate functions and identified opportunities for increased efficiency.”

This announcement follows recent downsizing at Disney’s television division, where 140 jobs were cut, representing 2% of Disney Entertainment Television’s staff. In May, Pixar also laid off 175 employees, about 14% of its workforce.

Disney has faced declining profits since the pandemic, compounded by box office failures like Elemental and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, as well as struggles with its Disney+ streaming service and theme parks. Rising operational costs and high inflation have further pressured the company.

Since returning as CEO in 2022, Bob Iger has cut over 8,000 jobs to save $7.5 billion. During a November earnings call, Iger acknowledged the creative challenges post-pandemic, noting that the surge in content production had compromised quality, causing Disney to lose focus.

In a shocking incident that has stunned the community of Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, a Class 2 student was allegedly murdered as part of a black magic ritual aimed at bringing prosperity and fame to a local school. The gruesome crime, which took place on September 22, has led to the arrest of five individuals, including the school’s owner.

Class 2 student murdered in UP’s Hathras

According to Hathras Superintendent of Police, Nipun Aggarwal, the motive behind the murder was rooted in superstition. “We have arrested five people,” Aggarwal stated. “The child was strangled with the intent to bring prosperity to the school and secure its future.”

The police investigation revealed that the school had been facing financial difficulties, leading the accused to believe that a human sacrifice would reverse their fortunes. The school owner’s father, reportedly involved in occult practices, is suspected to have influenced this misguided belief.

How did this incident come to light?

The tragedy unfolded in two attempts. On September 6, the first attempt was thwarted when the child raised an alarm during the strangling attempt. A subsequent medical examination confirmed signs of this assault. Undeterred, the perpetrators made a second attempt on September 22, initially planning to carry out the ritual near a tube well behind the school. However, when the boy awoke during the abduction, the panicked suspects strangled him inside the school premises.

Further evidence supporting the claims of occult activities was found near the tube well, where ritualistic items were discovered.

Here’s what the victim’s father said:

The victim’s father recounted the harrowing experience: “I received a call from my son’s school saying, ‘Your child’s condition is very serious. Please come immediately.’ While I was on my way, they called again and said, ‘The child’s condition has worsened, and we are taking him to Sadabad.’ We followed them towards Agra, but they didn’t stop the car. When we returned, we caught up with them in Sadabad, where we found the child’s body in their car.”

People want justice!

This tragic incident has not only devastated a family but also exposed the dangerous persistence of superstitious beliefs in some parts of society. It raises serious questions about the safety of children in educational institutions and the urgent need for awareness campaigns against such harmful practices.

As the investigation continues, the community grapples with the shock of this senseless crime, calling for justice and measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Pune: Two men aged between 20 and 22 years were apprehended and two minors were detained on the charges of rape of a teenage girl studying in a Pune college, whom they befriended on social media, the police informed.

4 accused arrested for 16-year-old girl rape in Pune

According to the police, the four accused had met the 16-year-old girl on media, however, they don’t know each other personally.

The accused allegedly sexually harassed the victim separately at different places in the city between April and September.

When did this incident come to light?

Notably, during a session on sexual offences against children organised in the college, this incident came to light.

As per the police, in a discussion, a female student looked depressed and when she was taken into confidence, she told counsellors about the victim, who is her friend, and the ordeal she was going through.

“Later, an investigation revealed the victim had met the four individuals, who are not known to each other, on social media platforms and she was allegedly raped by them on separate occasions,” said a woman police official.

Videos of the victim made by the accused

Further, the woman said videos were also made of the minor, and hence the IT Act has been invoked in the case.

“We have lodged a case against the four accused – among whom two are minors (age not disclosed), who have been detained. The other accused (aged 20 to 22 years) have been placed under arrest and further probe was on,” the police said.

Amid the serious charges the accused have been booked under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) section concerning rape, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Orange Juice: A Daily Elixir or a Sugar Rush?

0
Orange Juice
Orange Juice

Orange juice, a refreshing and tangy beverage, has long been touted as a health elixir. Its bright colour and citrusy taste make it a popular choice for many. But is it truly as beneficial as it’s often portrayed? Let’s delve into the pros and cons of incorporating orange juice into your daily diet.

Orange Juice: The Nutritional Powerhouse

Orange juice is packed with essential nutrients that can benefit your overall health. It is a rich source of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that plays a crucial role in boosting immunity. This vitamin helps protect your body from infections, promotes collagen production for healthy skin, and even aids in iron absorption. Additionally, orange juice contains flavonoids like naringenin and hesperidin, which have anti-inflammatory properties and may help alleviate arthritis pain.

Beyond vitamin C, orange juice also provides calcium, potassium, and folate. Calcium is essential for strong bones and teeth, while potassium helps regulate blood pressure. Folate is particularly important for women of childbearing age as it can help prevent neural tube defects in developing fetuses.

Potential Pitfalls

While orange juice offers numerous health benefits, it’s not without its drawbacks. One significant concern is its high sugar content. Even when freshly squeezed, orange juice contains natural sugars that can contribute to weight gain and other health issues if consumed in excess. This is especially true for commercially available orange juices, which often contain added sugars, preservatives, and artificial colours.

Another potential issue is the loss of fibre during the juicing process. Fiber plays a vital role in digestion, helps regulate blood sugar levels, and promotes satiety. When you drink orange juice, you miss out on the fibre that is present in whole oranges. This can lead to a quicker rise in blood sugar levels, potentially contributing to weight gain and other health problems.

Verdict on Orange Juice

So, should you drink orange juice every day? The answer is a nuanced one. While it offers valuable nutrients, it’s important to consume it in moderation and be mindful of its potential drawbacks. If you’re looking to reap the benefits of orange juice, consider these tips:

  • Choose fresh-squeezed orange juice: Opt for freshly squeezed orange juice whenever possible to avoid added sugars and preservatives.
  • Consume it in moderation: Limit your intake of orange juice to one or two servings per day.
  • Consider whole oranges: For a more balanced approach, incorporate whole oranges into your diet as well to benefit from their fibre content.
  • Be aware of potential health conditions: If you have diabetes or other health conditions, consult with your healthcare provider before consuming large amounts of orange juice.

By following these guidelines, you can enjoy the benefits of orange juice while minimizing its potential risks. Remember, a balanced diet is key to optimal health, and incorporating a variety of fruits and vegetables is essential.

IMF Provides $7 Billion Loan to Pull Pakistan From Economic Troubles

0

Pakistan announced on Thursday that it would face “transitional pain” after securing a $7 billion relief package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to support its struggling economy.

Although the economy has stabilized since nearly defaulting last summer, Pakistan remains heavily reliant on IMF bailouts and loans from friendly nations to manage its massive debt, which consumes half of its annual revenues. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb told Geo News, “There will be transitional pain, but if we are to make this the last programme, we need to implement structural reforms.” The IMF has agreed to immediately disburse around $1 billion as part of the package.

IMF Pakistan mission chief Nathan Porter praised Pakistan’s return to economic stability but emphasized the need for sustained growth and broader distribution of its benefits. The new IMF deal, Pakistan’s 24th since 1958, required unpopular reforms, such as cutting power subsidies and expanding the tax base.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif credited the deal’s success to the support of Saudi Arabia, China, and the UAE, highlighting China’s crucial role in the final phase of negotiations. Pakistan is also negotiating a $12 billion loan reprofiling, including $5 billion from Saudi Arabia, $4 billion from China, and $3 billion from the UAE over three to five years.

Despite the deal, Pakistan’s economic challenges remain steep. Economist Kaiser Bengali noted that while the agreement would help address immediate debts, it does little to reduce government spending. By the end of 2023, Pakistan’s total debt had reached over $250 billion (74% of GDP), with significant portions owed to external creditors, primarily China and Chinese commercial banks.

Last year, Pakistan narrowly avoided default amid political turmoil, economic mismanagement, devastating floods, and a global downturn. The IMF agreement was contingent on difficult reforms, including raising household bills to fix the energy sector and boosting tax revenues. With a population of over 240 million, only 5.2 million filed income tax returns in 2022. While the IMF acknowledged Pakistan’s progress, it warned that the country’s vulnerabilities and structural challenges remain formidable.

Govt. to increase minimum wage, check revised rates:

The revised rates aim to benefit workers across various sectors, including construction, loading and unloading, watch and ward, sweeping, cleaning, housekeeping, mining, and agriculture. These sectors fall under central sphere establishments.

Skilled and clerical workers: Rs 954 (Rs 24,804 per month)

Highly skilled workers and armed watch and ward personnel: Rs 1,035 (Rs 26,910 per month)

The government revises the VDA twice a year, in April and October, based on changes in the Consumer Price Index for industrial workers. This system aims to provide a buffer against inflation for workers, particularly those in the unorganized sector.

What does this revision in minimum wage underscore?

The revision is expected to have a widespread impact, affecting millions of workers across India. It reflects the government’s efforts to balance economic growth with worker welfare, especially in light of recent inflationary pressures.
