The dispute within the Kapur family over the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s wealth has now drawn attention to its youngest heirs, his children with former wife and actor Karisma Kapoor.
Sunjay and Karisma’s children, Samaira aged 20 and Kiaan aged 15, have approached the Delhi High Court through their mother as guardian. They claim their stepmother, model Priya Sachdev Kapur who married Sunjay in 2017, produced a questionable will to seize control of property worth nearly ₹30,000 crore. Their plea insists that at least one fifth of the estate should rightfully come to them as legal heirs.
The petition lists several assets and alleges Priya hid details of others. Sunjay’s mother Rani Kapur has also challenged Priya’s version and demanded her share in automobile major Sona Comstar, the core company of the Kapur fortune. Rani, who once chaired the board, pointed to her late husband Surinder Kapur’s legacy and called recent changes in the company “highly suspicious circumstances.”
Sunjay’s sisters have joined in raising objections. Under the Hindu Succession Act of 1956, if no valid will exists, all Class I heirs including widow, children and mother inherit equal shares, explained Supreme Court lawyer Tushar Kumar. The contest has sharpened as two separate wills are being cited — one of 2015 that Rani relies upon and another of March 2025 that Priya presented only weeks after Sunjay’s death.
The industrialist died of a heart attack during a polo match in Surrey at the age of 53. He had been married three times, first to designer Nandita Mahtani, then to Karisma Kapoor and finally to Priya Sachdev. His children, who performed his last rites in Delhi, say they shared a close bond and were often reassured about their future by their father. They allege Priya withheld documents for weeks, later revealed a new will, and restricted their access to family trust records.
The children have also told the court that they were called to corporate meetings of Sona Comstar and asked to sign papers without clarity about the trust structure. Their suit seeks answers not only from Priya and her minor son but also from Rani Kapur and others connected to the family business.
