Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik became Tesla’s first Indian customer, taking delivery of a white Model Y at the Tesla Experience Centre in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex. The facility was inaugurated on July 15, marking Tesla’s formal entry into the Indian market.

“I am very happy to have received the first Tesla in India. It is a matter of pride for me. I did not get this car at any discount; I bought it by paying the full amount. I plan to use this Tesla to drop my grandson off at school so that more people see it, learn about electric vehicles, and are encouraged to adopt them,” Sarnaik stated during the handover ceremony.

The minister’s son, Purvesh, expressed excitement about the purchase: “I’m very excited that we bought this Tesla. Like my father said, my son will go to school in it, and he’s thrilled. We will also use it for daily purposes, going to the gym, and other family needs. Electric vehicles are gaining momentum in India, which is a very positive sign. They bring sustainability, zero emissions, and a cleaner environment. We are also planning more charging points so that people can operate these vehicles without any hassle.”

Tesla’s Market Response and Projections in India

Tesla has received 600 bookings since launch, though this figure reportedly falls short of company expectations, according to Bloomberg. The automaker plans to ship 350-500 vehicles to India this year, with the first batch arriving from Shanghai in early September.

Growing EV Market

India’s electric vehicle segment, while representing just 5% of total car sales from April to July 2025, shows impressive growth momentum with 93% increase to 15,500 units during that period.

Model Y Specifications

Tesla offers two India-specific variants: the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) with 60kWh battery starting at Rs 59.89 lakh, and Long Range RWD with 75kWh battery priced at Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom). The RWD provides 500km range while Long Range extends to 622km.

Currently, deliveries are limited to Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram.

Travel agents report that during peak backlog periods, Indians frequently traveled to Germany for visa interviews. The US Embassy in Frankfurt even reserved slots “specifically for Indian applicants” two years ago when domestic wait times reached 15-20 months.

Limited Exceptions

The new policy permits applications at designated embassies only for nationals from countries where the US doesn’t conduct routine visa operations, including Afghanistan, Cuba, Chad, Russia, and Iran. However, even these applicants must apply where they legally reside.

Worsening Backlog Concerns

Industry observers warn the restriction may exacerbate existing delays. Current visa wait times across India vary dramatically – from 3.5 months in Hyderabad and Mumbai to five months in Kolkata, with Chennai reaching nine months.

Additional Changes

The policy coincides with another significant change implemented September 2: mandatory in-person interviews for most non-immigrant visa categories. The State Department scaled back its Interview Waiver Program (Dropbox), requiring face-to-face meetings for H, L, F, M, J, E, and O visa categories – even for applicants previously exempt, including those over 79 and children under 14.

Livestock Rescue Strengthened With 481 Veterinary Groups In Punjab Flood Zones

Officials stated that around 2.52 lakh animals and nearly 5.88 lakh poultry birds have been affected by the floods.

Animal Husbandry Minister Khudian informed that 481 veterinary units are working in the field to provide medical treatment and distribute medicines to impacted livestock. So far, 22,534 animals have received care. In addition, control rooms are functioning round the clock at the state headquarters with contact number 0172 5086064 as well as in district offices to manage relief operations and respond to emergencies. He appealed to citizens to extend cooperation and immediately report cases of animal distress to these helplines.

The department in coordination with district administrations and social organisations has supplied more than 12,170 quintals of feed along with 5,090.35 quintals of green fodder, dry fodder and silage to support livestock in flood hit regions.

Principal Secretary of Animal Husbandry Rahul Bhandari confirmed that Rs 31.50 lakh has been sanctioned for animal treatment in the affected districts. He directed officials to ensure timely response to distress calls, provide essential medical attention and supplies, and work jointly with district authorities and voluntary groups for effective relief implementation.
