Amid the ongoing controversy around actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut’s directorial film Emergency, the Bombay Hogh Court on Thursday asked the Central Board of Film Certification (CBCF) to decide on the release of the movie by September 25, further delaying it to hit the theatres.

Bombay High Court asks Censor to decide to release Emergency

On September 04, the court passed an order, directing the film body to consider the representations filed by the Jabalpur Sikh Sangat against the movie and take a decision latest by September 18, on whether to release it or not in cinema.

“Today, we are informed that the decision isn’t taken because the matter is referred to the revising committee of the CBFC,” it said, stating the CBFC to take decision whether to release the movie or not by September 25.

“Whatever they want to do, they have to decide by the said date. You make a decision. Have the courage to say that the film should not be released. We will appreciate the stand of the CBFC. Don’t be a fence sitter. We will decide the issue even if you say that the film should not be released. Have that courage to say that the film should not be released,” it added.

About Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency:

For those who are unaware, the film Emergency is directed, written and co-produced by Kangana Ranaut herself, and is based on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, starring Kangana Ranaut, Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Mahima Chaudhry and Milind Soman in pivotal roles.

Earlier, the film scheduled to hit the theatres on September 06, however, it was landed into a big conversation after Sikh groups raised concerns over historical accuracy and portrayals of Sikhs.

MP Court grants permission to file objections with censor

Just a day before the Bombay High Court ruled on the contentious film Emergency, the Madhya Pradesh High Court granted permission to two Sikh organizations to file detailed objections with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The Jabalpur Sikh Sangat and Sri Guru Singh Sabha argued that certain scenes in the film violated the fundamental rights of the Sikh community and demanded an apology from actress Kangana Ranaut.

In addition to these legal challenges, the Shiromani Akali Dal, a prominent Sikh political party, also sent a legal notice to the CBFC, urging it to halt the release of Emergency.

Reports Suggest Made in India Ammunition Being Sold in Ukraine

0

Artillery shells produced by Indian arms manufacturers have been diverted by European buyers to Ukraine, despite Indian export regulations and protests from Moscow, according to eleven government and defense industry sources from India and Europe, as well as a Reuters analysis of customs data.

For over a year, munitions have been transferred to support Ukraine’s defense against Russia, according to the sources and customs data. Indian arms export rules stipulate that weapons should only be used by the declared purchaser, who could face future sales bans if unauthorized transfers occur.

The Kremlin has raised concerns about this issue on at least two occasions, including during a July meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Indian counterpart, three Indian officials reported. This report by Reuters is the first to reveal the details of these ammunition transfers. Neither the Russian nor Indian foreign and defense ministries responded to inquiries. In January, Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated at a press conference that India had not sent or sold artillery shells to Ukraine.

Two Indian government officials and two defense industry sources informed Reuters that India’s contribution to the ammunition used by Ukraine is minimal, with one official estimating it to be less than 1% of the total arms imported by Kyiv since the conflict began. Reuters could not confirm whether these munitions were resold or donated to Ukraine by the European customers.

Italy and the Czech Republic are among the European countries sending Indian munitions to Ukraine, according to officials from Spain and India, as well as a former executive of Yantra India, a state-owned company whose munitions are being used by Ukraine. The Czech Republic is leading an initiative to supply Kyiv with artillery shells from outside the EU.

An Indian official confirmed that Delhi is closely monitoring the situation, but, along with a defense industry executive with direct knowledge of the transfers, stated that India has taken no action to curb the supply to Europe. Most of the 20 individuals interviewed by Reuters requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.

The defense ministries of Ukraine, Italy, Spain, and the Czech Republic did not respond to requests for comment. India and the U.S., Ukraine’s main security supporter, have strengthened defense and diplomatic ties recently, driven by concerns over China, which both nations see as a primary rival. At the same time, India maintains strong relations with Russia, its top arms supplier, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declined to join the Western sanctions against Moscow.

India, historically the world’s largest arms importer, views the ongoing war in Europe as an opportunity to boost its emerging arms export sector, according to six Indian officials familiar with the government’s stance. Ukraine, struggling to fend off a Russian offensive near the logistics hub of Pokrovsk in the east, faces a severe shortage of artillery ammunition.

The White House declined to comment, while the U.S. State Department referred questions about India’s arms exports to the Indian government. India exported just over $3 billion worth of arms between 2018 and 2023, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh stated at an August 30 conference that defense exports exceeded $2.5 billion in the last fiscal year, and Delhi aims to raise that figure to around $6 billion by 2029.

September 19, 2007, a day that will forever be etched in the annals of Indian cricket history, marked the incredible feat of Yuvraj Singh. In the inaugural T20 World Cup, the left-handed batter unleashed a display of power hitting that left the world stunned.

During a crucial match against England, Yuvraj Singh faced Stuart Broad, the English fast bowler. In a single over, he launched the ball six times over the boundary, becoming the first cricketer to achieve this extraordinary feat in T20 cricket. This moment defined the shortest format of the game and continues to inspire cricketers and fans alike.

Yuvraj Singh relives six-sixes moment

Seventeen years later, Yuvraj Singh took to social media to commemorate the anniversary of his iconic performance. “Forever grateful to represent my country and for moments like these,” he wrote on X, sharing a video of the six sixes.

In addition to his historic achievement, Yuvraj Singh recently revealed his all-time XI. A decorated cricketer himself, Yuvraj made some expected choices, including Indian batting legends Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma.

The opening pair consisted of Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, followed by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli at numbers three and four. AB de Villiers occupied the number five spot, while Adam Gilchrist took on the role of wicket-keeper at number six.

Yuvraj opted for Australian spin-bowling legend Shane Warne at number seven and Muttiah Muralitharan at number eight. Glenn McGrath and Wasim Akram filled the pace department at numbers nine and ten, respectively. The all-rounder spot went to Andrew Flintoff.

When asked to name a special number 12 player, Yuvraj modestly chose himself. His contributions to Indian cricket, both on and off the field, have solidified his place as one of the game’s most iconic figures.

Delhi Gets its New CM: AAP’s Atishi to Take Oath this Saturday

Delhi is all set to witness Aam Aadmi Party (AAM) leader and Chief Minister-designated Atishi to take oath of office on Saturday – September 21, the party said today.

AAP’s Atishi to take oath as Delhi Chief Minister

This announcement came just hours after Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena proposed September 21 as the date for the swearing-in of CM-designated Atishi in a written communication to President Droupadi Murmu.

Initially, AAP had decided that only Atishi would be sworn-in, according to the sources. However, it was later decided that her council of ministers would also take oath on the same day.

Atishi selected as Delhi’s designated-CM

Notably, Atishi Marlena, who is also the lone woman minister in the Delhi Cabinet, Tuesday – September 17, was unanimously selected for the Delhi Chief Minister’s post by the ruling AAP legislators.

She is the Kalkaji MLA, who holds the maximum portfolios in the AAP govt. and is all set to take over from party supremo Arvind Kejriwal just months before the Delhi Assembly polls.

Arvind Kejriwal resignation

Since former-CM Arvind Kejriwal announced his resignation following his bail by the Supreme Court in connection with the alleged controversial Delhi Liquor Policy Scam.

However, Atishi was the frontrunner for the top job as she had assumed a pivotal role in the AAP after the arrest of Kejriwal and his former deputy Manish Sisodia in the controversial case.

Justin Trudeau Shuts International Student Permits in Canada

0

The Canadian government is intensifying efforts to limit the number of study permits issued to international students and is introducing stricter criteria for work permit eligibility.

“We’re granting 35% fewer international student permits this year, and next year, that figure will drop by another 10%,” stated Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“While immigration benefits our economy, we will crack down when the system is exploited, especially by those who take advantage of students.”

These actions are designed to reduce the number of temporary residents in Canada, a decision made as Trudeau’s Liberal government faces mounting political pressure. Currently behind in public opinion polls and reeling from a significant by-election loss, the government has prioritized immigration and temporary residency as central political issues ahead of a federal election, expected by October 2025.

Canada tightens immigration policies
The government plans to cut the number of study permits issued to international students to 437,000 by 2025, a sharp decline from the 509,390 permits granted in 2023. In the first seven months of 2024, 175,920 study permits were already issued.
Additionally, the government is imposing stricter conditions for work permits, especially for the spouses of students and temporary foreign workers. These changes form part of a wider initiative to enhance visa integrity, aimed at preventing fraud and curbing non-genuine visitors.

“Not everyone who wishes to come to or stay in Canada will be able to,” said Immigration Minister Marc Miller, underlining the government’s intent to enforce tougher residency and visa regulations.

The Trudeau administration has committed to reducing the temporary resident population to 5% of Canada’s total population, down from 6.8% in April. Although inflation reached the Bank of Canada’s target of 2% in August, public sentiment continues to link migration to economic challenges.

Lebanon blasts

After a shocking explosion happened by walkie-talkies, solar equipment and other electronic devices used by members of the Iran-backed Hezbollah detonated on Wednesday across the country’s stronghold Beirut, more than 30 people have lost their lives and over 450 people were left injured.

Notably, yesterday’s incident came just a day after thousands of pagers used by the militants exploded.

What happened in Lebanon’s Beirut on Wednesday?

The walkie-talkie blasts happened in the southern part of Lebanon’s capital city Bierut and the Bekaa Valley, which is known to be Hezbollah strongholds.  As per Lebanon’s official news agency, there were reports of solar energy systems blasting at homes in Beirut, resulting in at least one girl being injured, according to the reports by the Associated Press.

Talking to the media, the Lebanese Health Ministry stated that some of the people killed in Wednesday’s explosions were attending funerals of Tuesday’s pager blast victims.

Is Israel responsible for walkie-talkie explosions in Lebanon?

Amid the series of explosions that happened in the city, Hezbollah has accused Israel of carrying out the back-to-back blasts, vowing immediate retaliation against the Jewish country.

According to the reports, on Wednesday, the militant group announced at least three strikes in northern Isreal, among which one happened after the walkie-talkie blasts.

Will Hezbollah chief address the nation on walkie-talkie blasts today?

Moreover, the Hezbollah supremo is likely to address this issue in a major speech today (Thursday).

Despite the serious allegations by Hezbollah, Israel is yet to respond to the series of explosions. However, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has announced a “new phase in the war.”

Here’s what Israeli Defence Minister said:

Addressing the troops on Wednesday, Gallant said, “We are at the start of a new phase in the war, it requires courage, determination and perseverance.”

“The ‘centre of gravity’ is moving north, meaning that we are allocating forces, resources and energy for the northern arena.”

In a tweet on X, he didn’t mention the Lebanon explosions, but hailed the work of the Israeli troops and security agencies, saying the “results are very impressive.”

Meanwhile, Israel confirmed that almost 30 projectiles were fired from Lebanon on Wednesday, claiming no reports of deaths and injuries. Israeli aircraft struck Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon, they added.

Amazon Employees Bash Return-to-office Mandate by CEO Andy Jassy

0

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s decision to enforce a return-to-office (RTO) policy has drawn significant criticism from employees. Jassy, who succeeded Jeff Bezos as CEO in 2021 during the pandemic when remote work became widespread, recently issued a memo outlining changes aimed at reinforcing the company’s “culture and teams.” These changes include shifting from a work-from-home (WFH) or hybrid model back to in-office work.

In the memo, Jassy stated, “We’ve decided to return to being in the office as we were before COVID. Looking back over the last five years, we still believe that the benefits of being together in the office are substantial.” He acknowledged that the change might require some employees to adjust their personal lives to accommodate a five-day in-office workweek.

Employee reactions were swift and pointed. Some expressed frustration openly, with one employee posting on Slack, “This is significantly stricter than how many teams operated pre-COVID. It’s not ‘going back’—it’s just going backwards,” as reported by Business Insider. Another employee referenced the company’s guiding principle of being the “Earth’s Best Employer” when voicing dissatisfaction.

The pushback extended beyond internal channels, with employees taking to LinkedIn to share their objections. A system development engineer, for example, activated his “#OpenToWork” status and wrote, “Amazon has announced a 5-day RTO, which is unfortunate because I’m interested in working for a living, not live-action role-playing. If you have remote opportunities, reach out. I’d rather go back to school than work in an office again.”

On Reddit, employees also voiced their discontent. One user, claiming to work for Amazon in Seattle, commented, “Amazon doesn’t care about its employees—corporate or warehouse. All they care about is squeezing as much labor and profit out of us as possible before we burn out.”

Despite the backlash, Jassy remains committed to the RTO policy, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the right company culture. He concluded his memo by stating, “I’m optimistic these changes will help us achieve our goals while strengthening our culture and team effectiveness.”

Cabinet Approves Subsidy for Crop Nutrients and Revamped Schemes

0

NEW DELHI: On Wednesday, the Union cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a provisional subsidy of ₹24,475.53 crore for nutrient-based phosphatic and potassic (P&K) fertilisers for the upcoming rabi (winter-sown) season. Additionally, the cabinet sanctioned new allocations for the Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA), a program designed to safeguard farmers’ incomes, according to Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

The nutrient-based subsidy scheme provides farmers with fertilisers at prices lower than the market rate, based on their phosphatic and potassic content, with the aim of discouraging excessive use.

In India, the availability and affordability of essential fertilisers are vital for food security. These, combined with improved seeds, were instrumental in driving the Green Revolution of the 1960s.

The government offers 28 varieties of P&K fertilisers to farmers at subsidised rates through manufacturers and importers. Manufacturers sell the fertilisers at discounted prices and are later reimbursed by the government.

The cabinet also approved an allocation of ₹35,000 crore for PM-AASHA, a scheme that intervenes when market prices for farm produce plummet.

Launched in 2018, PM-AASHA includes three sub-schemes that allow state governments to purchase crops like pulses and oilseeds when market prices drop below the government’s set floor prices, protecting farmers from losses.

The cabinet-approved increase in funding for PM-AASHA will cover the entire 15th Finance Commission period, including the fiscal year 2025-26, as per a government statement.

The Union budget presented in July allocated ₹6,437 crore for PM-AASHA. In 2023-24 (revised estimates), the scheme received ₹2,200 crore, though the budget estimates initially allotted just ₹1 lakh, leaving farmers disappointed. In 2022-23, there were no funds allocated or spent on the scheme.

For greater efficiency, the government has merged two PM-AASHA sub-schemes: the Price Support Scheme (PSS) and the Price Stabilization Fund (PSF). “This consolidation will enhance implementation, ensuring farmers receive fair prices for their produce while controlling the price volatility of essential goods by maintaining availability,” an official stated.
