Mbappe Begins New Champions League Campaign With Real Madrid’s Goal

0

Kylian Mbappé began his pursuit of a European title with Real Madrid by scoring in his debut Champions League match for the club.

Mbappé netted just seconds into the second half, converting a cross from Rodrygo to help Madrid secure a 3-1 victory over Stuttgart at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

“It was a great night,” Mbappé said. “Champions League matches are always tough, but it was important to start with a home win.”

After scoring, Mbappé celebrated with a gesture that appeared to blow out candles and send a kiss, which, according to Spanish media, was in honor of his mother’s 50th birthday.

His goal gave the defending champions a 1-0 lead, but Stuttgart equalized through Deniz Undav in the 68th minute. Antonio Rüdiger restored Madrid’s lead in the 83rd, and substitute Endrick sealed the win with a late goal in stoppage time.

This was Mbappé’s 49th Champions League goal, placing him in the top 10 all-time scorers in the competition.

He has now scored in three consecutive matches, with five goals in seven games for Madrid across all competitions.

“I can do more,” Mbappé said. “I feel better with each game.”

Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was named man of the match, making key saves to deny Stuttgart’s scoring chances.

Mbappé was relatively quiet until his goal, with one of his best opportunities coming in the 25th minute when his low shot was saved. Moments later, he was free inside the area, but Federico Valverde’s low cross was intercepted.

Madrid struggled to create clear chances early on, while Stuttgart posed more threats, including a shot that hit the crossbar.

Vinícius Júnior also hit the crossbar for Madrid.

Mbappé, a World Cup winner with France in 2018, had failed to secure a Champions League title during his seven seasons with Paris Saint-Germain, which was also chasing its first European crown.

He left PSG as a free agent last season to join Madrid, a club that had pursued him for a decade. The move could increase his chances of lifting the European trophy, as Madrid has won the Champions League six times in the past 11 years.

Mbappé previously reached the semifinals of the competition with Monaco in 2017, and was a finalist with PSG in 2020. He also reached the semifinals with PSG in 2021 and last season.

Russia and India Pursue Speedy Conclusion of Investment Treaty

0

New Delhi: Seven years after the expiration of the investment treaty between India and Russia, the two nations have initiated talks to swiftly finalize a new agreement aimed at boosting investments and business cooperation, according to officials from both sides.

Virtual negotiations for the new investment treaty took place on July 18-19, shortly after the matter was discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on July 9. Both countries agreed to expedite the process of finalizing an agreement to promote and protect investments, officials said on condition of anonymity.

A joint statement issued following the India-Russia Summit in July revealed that the two leaders had instructed officials to begin negotiations on signing a bilateral free trade agreement in investments and services. They also set a bilateral trade target of $100 billion by 2030.

“India and Russia conduct trade in local currencies, the rupee and rouble, and bilateral merchandise trade has seen significant growth. India’s exports to Russia increased by over 35% in FY24 compared to FY23,” an official noted.

“Similarly, Russian imports, primarily petroleum, grew by more than 32%. The booming trade between the two countries is paving the way for expansion into other areas such as trade in services and foreign direct investment,” the official added.

While no specific timeline has been set for concluding the treaty, both sides are aiming to finalize it as soon as possible, officials said.

A second official stated that the countries are “close to moving forward” with the investment treaty, calling it an opportune time to take concrete steps to ensure investment protection. The proposed treaty is expected to enhance mutual investment prospects, he added.

“This is a crucial step toward further strengthening trade and investment ties. Numerous business delegations from Russia have visited India to explore opportunities in sectors such as energy, petrochemicals, infrastructure, construction, and railways,” the second official remarked.

India and Russia had previously set a target of $50 billion in total bilateral investments by 2025, after surpassing $30 billion in 2018. “Investors from both countries share common interests in specific sectors where they can complement each other within the value chain. For example, India is interested in the upstream oil and gas sector, while Russia is focused on India’s downstream sector,” explained a third official.

India has also expressed interest in investing in Russia’s Far East region, the northern sea route, and sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and shipbuilding, particularly ice-class vessels capable of navigating sea ice, officials said.

Other areas of mutual interest include pharmaceuticals, steel, and banking. Russia has invited Indian investors to participate in high-tech projects in its Far East, while India has encouraged Russian investors to establish manufacturing facilities in greenfield industrial cities under its industrial corridor program.

With a bilateral trade target of $30 billion by 2025, merchandise trade between India and Russia surpassed $65 billion in 2023-24, with a trade balance of approximately $57 billion in Russia’s favor.

India exported goods worth $1.74 billion in the first four months of the current fiscal year, showing 32% year-on-year growth. Russia’s exports to India rose by 20.3%, reaching $23.78 billion between April and July 2024.

“Russia is keen to invest part of its trade surplus in India, recognizing the country’s fast-growing economy,” the first official said.

A bilateral investment treaty with Russia, based on a model agreement from 1993, was signed in December 1994 and came into force in August 1996. India terminated this agreement in April 2017, along with several other bilateral investment pacts, according to the third official. The 1993 model text had significant shortcomings, including provisions that were open to broad and ambiguous interpretations by arbitral tribunals, he noted.

Investment treaties are legal agreements between two countries designed to ensure fair and equitable treatment of foreign investments, providing them with the same rights as domestic companies. Using the 1993 model, India signed treaties with 83 countries by 2015, with 74 of these agreements coming into force.

India first encountered problems with the 1993 model in 2011, when it received an adverse ruling in the White Industries Australia Ltd case. This, along with a rise in international arbitrations, led to a revision of the model text, which was adopted in 2015. Following this revision, India terminated investment treaties with 77 of the 83 countries with which it had agreements.

Matthew McConaughey’s latest public appearance has sparked conversation on social media, with many fans expressing surprise at his “unrecognizable” look. The Oscar-winning actor attended the 2024 Kering Foundation’s Caring for Women dinner in New York on September 8, alongside his wife, Camila Alves. Speculation about possible cosmetic surgery, particularly rhinoplasty, prompted a plastic surgeon to weigh in.

Matthew McConaughey’s new appearance stuns fans
A video shared on X showed McConaughey walking the red carpet, with users commenting on his noticeably different appearance. One person captioned the video, “Is Matthew McConaughey ok?” while another remarked, “He looks really thin and unhealthy.” Another user compared two pictures of the actor, one from last year and one from the event, asking, “Why does Matthew McConaughey look so different? Just one year apart.” A playful comment referenced his famous catchphrase, wondering if the actor is “alright, alright, alright.”

Expert opinion on McConaughey’s look
Consultant plastic surgeon Reza Nassab, based in Manchester and Cheshire, explained the likely reason behind the actor’s changed appearance. “I don’t believe Matthew McConaughey has had rhinoplasty. His nose appears different likely due to weight loss, especially in his face,” he stated. He added that significant weight loss can make facial features, including the nose, appear more prominent, leading some to assume cosmetic surgery.

McConaughey previously won an Oscar for Best Actor in 2014 for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, for which he lost approximately 50 pounds.

Trudeau Deals with No Confidence Motion

0

Toronto: Following another significant defeat in a federal by-election, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government could soon face a potential no-confidence motion, possibly as early as next week.

The defeat occurred in the Quebec riding of LaSalle-Émard-Verdun, where Bloc Québécois candidate Louis-Philippe Sauvé won against Liberal Party candidate Laura Palestini. This by-election was prompted by the resignation of former Cabinet Minister David Lametti, who had secured the seat in the 2021 federal election with a nearly 20 percent margin.

This loss follows a similar defeat in Toronto-St. Paul’s in June, signaling Trudeau’s declining political fortunes. His next hurdle will be surviving the anticipated no-confidence motion from the opposition Conservative Party, whose leader, Pierre Poilievre, declared on social media: “Taxes up. Costs up. Crime’s up. Time’s up.”

Poilievre is pushing for early elections, and recent polling by Abacus Data suggests his party has strong momentum. If elections were held now, 43 percent of committed voters would support the Conservatives, while only 22 percent would back the Liberals. Modeling by Raymond Liu for the National Post suggests that such a result would see the Liberals fall to fourth place in the House of Commons, behind the Conservatives, Bloc Québécois, and New Democratic Party.

Despite these setbacks, Trudeau has not indicated any intention to resign. Instead, he urged voters to stay engaged, emphasizing the stakes of the next election, currently scheduled for October next year. However, a no-confidence vote in the House of Commons could trigger early elections. The Liberals, holding 154 of 336 seats, would need support from either the Bloc Québécois or the NDP to stay in power. Earlier this month, the NDP withdrew from the Supply and Confidence Agreement, putting Trudeau’s political future in jeopardy.

Modi Cabinet Sets Path For Simultaneous Polls

0

The Union Cabinet has given its approval for holding simultaneous elections across India, combining both Lok Sabha and state Assembly polls, as announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday.

This decision comes after months of discussions, following the submission of a report by a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind. The report, presented to the Cabinet, outlines a detailed plan for implementing the ‘one nation, one election’ policy. The committee suggested that the first phase should involve concurrent elections for the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies, followed by local body elections within a 100-day timeframe.

The proposal aims to simplify India’s electoral system by reducing the frequency of elections, which currently occur over staggered periods. It is also expected to cut costs and lessen the administrative challenges associated with frequent elections.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has long advocated for the ‘one nation, one election’ approach, emphasizing its importance during his Independence Day speech. Modi pointed out that frequent elections disrupt the country’s progress and tie government initiatives to election cycles.

The BJP has included this initiative as a key commitment in its manifesto for the 2024 general elections. However, the plan has received mixed reactions. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has voiced opposition, stating that “One Nation, One Election” is incompatible with democracy, and that elections should be held as necessary to maintain democratic integrity.

The panel has recommended up to 18 constitutional amendments to facilitate the process, many of which do not require state Assembly approval but will need to be passed by Parliament. Some changes, like a unified electoral roll and voter ID system, will require ratification by at least half of the states.

Ahead of IND vs BAN Tests, Gambhir Says, ‘Can Take on Any Spin Unit…’

IND vs BAN

IND vs BAN: As India prepares to face Bangladesh in a crucial Test series, head coach Gautam Gambhir has boldly expressed his confidence in the team’s batting prowess, particularly against spin bowling. This assertion comes in the wake of recent struggles faced by Indian batsmen, including star player Virat Kohli, against Sri Lankan spinners in the ODI format.

Speaking to the media on the eve of the opening Test, Gambhir stated, “Our batting unit has so much quality that it can take on any spin unit. There is a lot of difference between ODIs and Tests. It’s all about the mindset and working and strengthening your defence and once you have it, then you play around it.”

Gambhir on Bangladesh’s cricket play ahead of IND vs BAN:

The former Indian opener, renowned for his proficiency against spin, acknowledged the strength of Bangladesh’s bowling attack. “They have a very good bowling attack. Shakib (Al Hasan) has got the experience. Mahidi (Hasan) is there as well. So, we know that there is talent in Bangladesh. The important thing is that we need to be switched on from day one,” Gambhir noted.

While recognizing Bangladesh’s recent Test series victory over Pakistan, Gambhir maintained that India would not underestimate their opponents. “We respect everyone. We don’t take any opposition lightly. We are going to go out there and play the brand of cricket that we want to play because that is what champions do,” he emphasized.

India has a world-class bowling unit: Head coach

Gambhir expressed pride in India’s world-class bowling unit, crediting players like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja for transforming India into a “bowling-obsessed” nation. He particularly praised Bumrah, calling him “the best bowler in the world” and highlighting his hunger for Test cricket.

The coach also underscored the crucial role of spin duo Ashwin and Jadeja in the upcoming series. “Both those guys can do that on day one to day five as well. So, I feel that we are going to have an attack which can take 20 wickets,” Gambhir explained, emphasizing their versatility and impact-making abilities.

Gambhir’s stance on paced-bowler’s absence

When questioned about the absence of a pace-bowling all-rounder in the mould of Kapil Dev, Gambhir remained unfazed. He pointed to India’s strong spin all-rounders, stating, “We have to manage with people like Jadeja, Ashwin. So, let’s not get obsessed with that (pace all-rounder).”

As the series approaches, Gambhir’s confident stance sets an optimistic tone for the Indian team, while acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead against a formidable Bangladesh side.

Can 3 Cups of Coffee Daily Protect Your Heart? Here’s What Study Says…

Coffee

In this fast-paced world where people want longevity and productivity, a new study offers a glimmer of hope for coffee enthusiasts. Researchers have discovered that consuming three cups of coffee daily could significantly reduce the risk of developing multiple metabolic conditions, including diabetes and heart-related issues, by an impressive 40 to 50 per cent.

Is coffee a drink for reducing heart issues?

As global populations age, medical professionals are witnessing a surge in cases of ‘cardiometabolic multimorbidity’ – the presence of two or more cardiometabolic diseases in an individual. This trend has raised alarm bells in the public health sector, prompting extensive research into potential preventive measures.

A study conducted by scientists from Suzhou Medical College of Soochow University in China has shed new light on this pressing issue. The research team, led by Chaofu Ke from the School of Public Health, analyzed data from the UK Biobank, comparing information from over 172,000 caffeine consumers with that of 188,000 coffee and tea drinkers. All participants were free from cardiometabolic conditions at the study’s outset.

What should be a coffee intake for a day?

The findings, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, reveal a striking correlation between moderate caffeine intake and reduced risk of cardiometabolic comorbidity. Individuals consuming three cups of coffee or 200-300 milligrams of caffeine daily exhibited a 40-48 per cent lower risk of developing these conditions compared to those who abstained or consumed less than 100 milligrams per day.

“Consuming three cups of coffee, or 200-300 mg caffeine, per day might help to reduce the risk of developing cardiometabolic multimorbidity in individuals without any cardiometabolic disease,” Ke stated, highlighting the potential preventive benefits of this common beverage.

Is moderate consumption of caffeine beneficial?

While previous studies have explored the protective effects of coffee and tea in individuals with a single cardiometabolic disease, this research breaks new ground by examining their impact on the onset of multiple conditions. Interestingly, the study found an inverse relationship between all levels of coffee and caffeine intake and the risk of developing multiple cardiometabolic disorders. However, moderate consumption appeared to offer the most significant benefits.

It’s worth noting that caffeine intake in this study wasn’t limited to coffee and tea. The researchers also considered other sources such as chocolates, energy drinks, and snack bars, providing a comprehensive view of caffeine consumption patterns.

Here’s what experts say:

The implications of this research could be far-reaching. As Ke emphasized, “The findings highlight that promoting moderate amounts of coffee or caffeine intake as a dietary habit to healthy people might have far-reaching benefits for the prevention of cardiometabolic comorbidity.”

While these results are promising, it’s important to remember that individual responses to caffeine can vary. As always, consulting with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to one’s diet is advisable. Nonetheless, for coffee lovers, this study offers a satisfying blend of science and indulgence, potentially brewing a healthier future one cup at a time.

Evacuation be Key to Notre Dame’s Centuries-Old Mystery in Paris? Read how…

Notre Dame
Notre Dame

In the heart of Paris, a centuries-old literary enigma may be on the brink of resolution, thanks to groundbreaking archaeological work at the Notre Dame cathedral. The final resting place of Joachim de Bellay, a prominent French Renaissance poet, has long eluded scholars and historians. Now, recent excavations in the wake of the devastating 2019 fire have unearthed puzzled clues that could finally put this mystery to rest.

What is this mystery all about?

De Bellay, a pivotal figure in the literary circle La Pleiade, passed away in 1560 at the young age of 37. His family had requested his interment in Notre Dame’s Saint-Crepin chapel. However, during renovations in 1758, all traces of his tomb vanished, leaving researchers baffled for generations.

The breakthrough came in 2022 when archaeologists, combing through the fire-damaged cathedral, uncovered two tombs at the building’s crossing. While one was swiftly identified as belonging to Antoine de La Porte, a clergyman from the early 18th century, the occupant of the second tomb remained a mystery for everyone.

Here’s what archaeologist says:

Employing cutting-edge analytical techniques, scientists began piecing together a compelling case for de Bellay’s identity. Dr Eric Cubrezy, an archaeologist involved in the project, noted a telling deformation in the skeleton’s iliac bone, indicative of frequent horseback riding.

Speaking to the reporters about the excavation, Cubrezy said, “De Bellay was a skilled rider, he went from Paris to Rome on horseback.”

Interestingly, some evidence even included signs of an autopsy and embalming process, consistent with de Bellay’s known post-mortem treatment. That’s not it, the traces of rare bone tuberculosis leading to chronic meningitis aligned perfectly with the poet’s documented medical history.

Le Monde hails this discovery!

Seeing this keen over the mystery, the renowned French newspaper ‘Le Monde’ hailed this discovery as the “most spectacular result” of the post-fire Notre Dame excavations, likening the centuries-old puzzle to a “cold case” finally nearing resolution.

Despite the mounting evidence, lead archaeologist Christophe Besnier urged caution, stating, “There are still some doubts.” This measured approach underscores the rigorous standards of modern archaeology, even in the face of such promising findings.

As the restoration of Notre Dame continues, this potential discovery adds a new layer of historical significance to the beloved cathedral. If confirmed, it would not only solve a longstanding mystery but also reconnect modern France with one of its most celebrated Renaissance voices, bridging the gap between past and present in the very stones of Paris’s most famous church.

Congress Raises Complaints Over NDA Leaders Statements

0

On Wednesday, the Congress filed a police complaint regarding recent statements allegedly made by leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies against Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi.

The complaint, submitted by AICC treasurer and general secretary Ajay Maken to the station house officer (SHO) at Tughlaq Road police station, highlighted remarks from BJP leaders Tarvinder Singh Marwah, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Raghuraj Singh, and Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad.

The complaint cited Marwah’s comments at a BJP event on September 11, where he allegedly issued a death threat against Rahul Gandhi, saying, “Rahul Gandhi, behave yourself, or you will meet the same fate as your grandmother.” It also mentioned Gaikwad’s offer of a ₹11 lakh bounty to anyone who cuts off Gandhi’s tongue.

Additionally, the complaint addressed remarks by Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Bittu, who called Gandhi the “number one terrorist of the country.” The Congress argued that Bittu’s statements were made to incite public hatred and violence against Gandhi and were widely shared on TV and social media. The complaint also included comments made by Uttar Pradesh minister Raghuraj Singh against Gandhi.

The Congress noted that these statements reflected personal hatred from BJP and its allies towards Rahul Gandhi, with calls for violence and defamatory accusations.

On Tuesday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take action against BJP leaders using offensive language towards Gandhi, calling for strict legal measures to prevent the further decline of political discourse in the country.
