AAP Leaders And MLAs Commit One Month Salary Towards Punjab Flood Relief Efforts

AAP leaders' new initiative for Punjab floods.

In flood-ravaged Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has called for unity and compassion, announcing that the Aam Aadmi Party’s entire leadership will step forward with personal contributions. Every MLA, along with the Cabinet and the Chief Minister himself, will donate one month’s salary to strengthen relief operations.

Sharing his thoughts on X, Mann reminded citizens that the situation demands collective effort. “No one has control over nature’s fury, but together, we must support each other in this challenging time,” he wrote.

The Chief Minister stressed that this decision is more than symbolic—it is meant to provide direct support to families grappling with the losses caused by the floods. “I, along with all our ministers and MLAs, am donating one month’s salary to assist those affected by the floods and to support ongoing relief efforts. Our government and administration are standing with the people with full commitment and dedication,” Mann stated. He concluded his message with a heartfelt prayer: “We pray to God that the situation returns to normal soon.”

Even as the government mobilises resources, moments of deep human resilience and faith have emerged. In the village of Abdullapur in Hoshiarpur district, where the Beas river swallowed entire settlements, AAP MLA Jasvir Singh Raja Gill from Urmur constituency set an extraordinary example. Following Sikh traditions, he ensured that the sacred saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was respectfully and safely carried to a secure location.

Before the relocation, Raja Gill joined the sangat in an ardaas, seeking blessings for the safety and well-being of the community. Videos of the emotional act quickly spread across social media, resonating deeply with people across Punjab. For many, the gesture symbolised that even in the darkest moments of a natural calamity, religious sanctity remains non-negotiable. It also reflected a powerful message from the party’s MLAs—that both faith and the lives of people must be protected with equal devotion.

Support has also begun to arrive from beyond Punjab’s borders. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has written to Mann, offering assistance and cooperation at this difficult time. Meanwhile, the state’s health machinery has shifted into high alert. Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh convened a review meeting with senior doctors, principals of medical colleges, and representatives from the IMA, Red Cross, and chemist associations. The focus was on emergency response and ensuring that medical care reaches those in need without delay.

“The health and well-being of our citizens is the top priority of the Punjab Government,” Dr Singh affirmed. He instructed all civil surgeons to make sure government hospitals remain fully prepared to handle an influx of patients.

The Health Department has also circulated an advisory for flood-hit regions, urging residents to avoid direct contact with contaminated water, consume only safe drinking water, take preventive steps against mosquitoes, and seek urgent treatment for illnesses like diarrhoea, skin infections, or snake bites.

Donald Trump Pulls Back Secret Service Security For Kamala Harris

A senior official revealed that Kamala Harris had her security detail extended for a year by President Joe Biden before he left office in January 2025. That arrangement was scheduled to last until January 2026.

Normally, former vice presidents are entitled to only six months of Secret Service coverage once their term ends, according to Reuters.

CNN obtained a letter addressed to Harris, stating that her additional protection will end on September 1, 2025. The message instructed officials to halt any security measures beyond the standard requirements of law.

Kirsten Allen, one of Harris’s senior advisers, said that Harris expressed her gratitude to the Secret Service for their dedication and professionalism.

This decision comes just weeks before Harris is set to begin a nationwide promotional tour for her upcoming memoir 107 Days, scheduled for release on September 23. The book recounts her short presidential run after President Biden stepped aside during the last election, when Harris ultimately lost to Donald Trump.

Punjab Gears Up For Seamless Paddy Procurement During Kharif Season

Punjab is taking extensive steps to ensure a smooth paddy procurement season this Kharif, with Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian leading preparations alongside senior officials from the Agriculture, Food and Civil Supplies Department and the Punjab Mandi Board.

During a meeting at Kisan Bhawan, Minister Khudian highlighted the state government’s goal of purchasing every grain of paddy brought to the markets. Plans are underway to introduce Punjab Agricultural University-calibrated moisture meters in all mandis to maintain uniformity in moisture testing. Additional improvements will focus on cleanliness, access to potable water, proper sheds, and uninterrupted electricity at procurement centers to make operations efficient.

Special attention is being given to flood-affected areas. Minister Khudian held a video conference with Chief Agriculture Officers, urging them to take proactive measures to assist farmers and advising farmers to bring dry crops to the mandis to prevent delays or difficulties in selling their produce.

The Punjab Mandi Board has confirmed that field staff have been deployed to monitor and ensure that essential facilities such as electricity, clean drinking water, toilets, and adequate sheds are available at all grain markets.

On the supply side, Director of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Varinder Kumar Sharma, reported that out of the required 5.40 lakh bales of bardana, approximately 3.50 lakh have already been delivered, with the remaining expected to arrive by mid-September.

These initiatives reflect the state government’s commitment to supporting farmers and ensuring that the Kharif procurement season proceeds without any disruptions.

Former First Lady And Ex-Prime Minister Indicted In South Korea Following Yoon Suk Yeol Removal

South Korea’s former first lady, Kim Keon Hee, and ex-Prime Minister Han Duck-soo were formally indicted on Friday following special investigations linked to the removal of former President Yoon Suk Yeol and his controversial martial law measures.

Kim, the wife of the jailed ex-president, faces charges including violations of financial market regulations, illegal political funding, and accepting bribes. Her indictment comes roughly two weeks after a court ordered her detention.

Han has been accused of assisting Yoon in imposing martial law, acts that investigators classify as tantamount to rebellion, along with allegations of falsifying and destroying official documents and providing false testimony.

Three special prosecutor investigations were initiated under the administration of liberal President Lee Jae Myung, targeting the actions of Yoon’s government related to the December martial law decree. Several high-ranking officials, including Yoon’s defense minister, military leaders, and police officers, have also been arrested for their roles in enforcing the martial law.

Yoon was removed from office in April and re-arrested last month over the December decree. Both Kim and Yoon are alleged to have influenced the conservative People Power Party’s nomination process in a 2022 legislative by-election, reportedly at the behest of election broker Myung Tae-kyun. Myung is accused of manipulating opinion surveys to favor Yoon in the party’s presidential primaries ahead of his presidential bid.

Earlier this month, Kim issued a public apology for the controversy, while signaling her intent to contest the charges, portraying herself as having a minor role in the events.

Assistant special counsel Park Ji-young said in a televised briefing that Han, as the highest-ranking official, could have obstructed Yoon’s martial law plan but instead actively sought to provide it procedural legitimacy by pushing the decree through a Cabinet Council meeting. Han maintains he had expressed opposition to the martial law plan.

Han, appointed prime minister by Yoon, served as acting head of state after Yoon’s impeachment in December. After Yoon’s formal removal by the Constitutional Court, Han was expected to lead the caretaker government until the June presidential election. He resigned to pursue the presidency himself, but Yoon’s conservative party ultimately selected another candidate.

Heavy Rains Hit Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag And Chamoli, CM Reports; Debris Leaves Families Stranded

Uttarakhand’s districts of Chamoli and Rudraprayag witnessed separate cloudbursts on Friday, according to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. Continuous rainfall across the hill state has caused river levels to surge sharply, raising concerns of flooding.

The Chief Minister noted that several families have been stranded in areas affected by the cloudbursts due to accumulated debris.

The latest updates indicate that the cloudbursts occurred in Rudraprayag’s Bareth Dungar Tok region and Chamoli’s Deval area. Rivers in both districts are swollen, with water levels reaching alarming heights.

In Rudraprayag, the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers have experienced a sharp rise, disrupting vehicle movement. Rudraprayag Police shared visuals showing an SUV trapped under debris, roads blocked by boulders, and rivers flowing forcefully.

Authorities reported that roads connecting Sirobagad, Bansawada Syalsaud, and Kund to Chopta in Rudraprayag are obstructed in multiple places. In Chamoli, rivers have reached critical levels, prompting authorities to advise residents living near riverbanks to evacuate immediately. “All residents along riverbanks should move to safer locations without delay,” Chamoli Police stated on X.

A similar warning was issued for Rudraprayag. “Rudraprayag Police and administrative teams are urging the public to avoid riverbanks and relocate to secure areas,” the police tweeted. Rising water levels in the Alaknanda river have flooded roads, blocking the Badrinath highway between Srinagar and Rudraprayag.

Traffic control measures have been implemented, and alternative routes are being arranged for pilgrims. Security personnel have also been deployed to ensure safety. While debris caused by the cloudburst has led to some damage in Rudraprayag, rescue and relief operations are actively underway. District Magistrate Prateek Jain is maintaining close coordination with officials at the disaster control room.

CM Dhami confirmed that rescue efforts are ongoing and that he remains in constant contact with authorities. “I pray to Baba Kedar for the safety and well-being of everyone,” he posted on X.

Earlier this month, a cloudburst hit Dharali in Uttarakhand, leaving over 100 people missing. Though road connectivity between Uttarkashi and Harsil has recently been restored, the Gangotri pilgrimage continues to remain suspended. District Magistrate Prashant Arya has instructed the Border Roads Organisation to accelerate repairs so that the Gangotri yatra can resume fully.

Punjab Govt Initiates Extensive Flood Relief Efforts And Assigns Senior Leaders to Affected Regions

Punjab’s flood relief operations are being carried out round the clock with the state government working closely with the National Disaster Response Force and other central agencies. Authorities say the focus remains on providing food, clean water, shelter, and medical care until normalcy is restored.

To ensure this, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has deployed his entire council of ministers to the ground. Each minister has been directed to stay in flood-affected districts and personally oversee evacuations, distribution of essentials, and arrangements for displaced families. Mann has warned that delays in relief will not be tolerated.

On Wednesday, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema reviewed the situation with Deputy Commissioners of Sangrur and Mansa through a virtual meeting. He underlined the government’s commitment, stating, “Our top priority is to save every life and protect every property. No stone should be left unturned in mitigating the hardships faced by the people in flood-hit areas.”

Cabinet colleagues are spread across the state leading district-level efforts. Harbhajan Singh ETO is coordinating rescue work in Ramdas, Tarn Taran, Sri Goindwal Sahib and Ajnala. Barinder Kumar Goyal is also stationed in Sri Goindwal Sahib and Ajnala, while Gurmeet Singh Khuddian is handling relief in Kapurthala villages. Lal Chand Kataruchak has been sent to Pathankot, Laljit Singh Bhullar to Tarn Taran, and Hardeep Singh Mundian to Tehsil Sultanpur Lodhi.

With ministers supervising on-site and agencies reinforcing rescue measures, the government has assured citizens that every possible step will be taken to reduce suffering and safeguard lives during this crisis.

Reliance And Nayara Expected To Raise Russian Oil Imports By 10% to 20% In September Despite US Tariffs

India’s purchases of Russian crude are expected to climb in September, even as a 50 percent tariff imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump comes into effect, Reuters reported Thursday (28 August 2025).

According to three market sources, Indian refiners—primarily Reliance Industries and Rosneft-backed Nayara Energy—plan to boost Russian crude imports by 10–20 percent, equal to an additional 150,000–300,000 barrels per day compared with August. The sources, who cited early trade data, requested anonymity as they were not authorised to discuss the matter publicly.

Russian producers are likely to offer deeper discounts to secure buyers abroad, with domestic refining capacity constrained after Ukrainian drone strikes damaged multiple facilities near Moscow. Without sustained purchases from India, Moscow could struggle to maintain export volumes, undermining oil revenues critical to funding its budget and war effort in Ukraine.

Neither Reliance nor Nayara commented on the matter, while India’s oil ministry also did not provide a response.

A Strategic Lifeline
Since Western sanctions were introduced following the Ukraine invasion in 2022, India has emerged as the single largest buyer of Russian crude, reaping the benefits of lower prices. However, the move has drawn criticism from Washington. Earlier this week, Trump raised tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent, accusing New Delhi of exploiting discounted oil flows.

India insists it is working diplomatically to address the tariff issue. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also engaged with global leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, to strengthen strategic partnerships.

Washington has accused India of profiteering, while Indian officials argue that Western nations themselves continue to purchase Russian commodities on a large scale, revealing what they call a double standard.

Supply Pressures
Recent Ukrainian strikes have disabled nearly 17 percent of Russia’s refining output, leaving Moscow with more crude than it can process domestically. India imported about 1.5 million barrels per day in the first three weeks of August—flat from July but slightly below January–June averages. These volumes account for almost 1.5 percent of global supply and meet roughly 40 percent of India’s energy needs. China and Turkey also remain significant buyers.

India’s reliance on Russian oil has come at the expense of more costly OPEC cargoes, whose market share fell sharply before showing some recovery in 2024. For September, traders said Russian Urals crude has been offered at $2–3 per barrel below Brent, cheaper than August discounts of $1.50—the narrowest since 2022.

Analysts believe India will keep Russian supplies central to its mix unless global trade rules shift dramatically. Brokerage CLSA noted that there is “little chance of India halting Russian imports” unless a worldwide ban is enforced. A sudden stop, they warned, could wipe one million barrels per day from the market and drive global crude prices close to $100.

The real impact of the new U.S. tariffs, and a tighter EU price cap set at $47.60 per barrel effective 2 September, will likely be felt in shipments arriving from October onwards. Both measures are designed to squeeze Moscow’s oil revenues, though traders expect India to continue buying unless geopolitical or economic realities change significantly.

Punjab Government Cancels Suspension Of ADGP SPS Parmar And SSP Varinder Singh Brar

The Punjab government has lifted the suspension of Additional Director General of Police SPS Parmar and Senior Superintendent of Police Varinder Singh Brar with immediate effect. The State Home Department issued separate notifications confirming the decision on Wednesday.

Parmar had been sidelined earlier this year over alleged lapses in the Vigilance Bureau’s probe into a major driving licence scam during his tenure as its chief. The case involved manipulation of automated driving tests where pre-recorded videos were allegedly reused to certify applicants. Critics had accused the bureau of deliberately slowing the investigation despite having evidence, which eventually led to Parmar’s suspension.

In a separate case, SSP Brar was suspended on May 28 while serving in Fazilka. His removal was linked to a bribery episode involving four officials from the district’s Cyber Crime Police Station, who were accused of demanding one lakh rupees from the family of a minor whose phone had been seized. As the supervising officer, Brar was blamed for not responding quickly. However, a later inquiry cleared him of wrongdoing, paving the way for his reinstatement.

After his suspension was cancelled, Brar has been instructed to report to the office of the Director General of Police, Punjab.

Bruce Willis Living Apart During Dementia Struggle As Wife Emma Heming Shares

Bruce Willis is receiving round-the-clock professional care at a separate residence as he continues to live with frontotemporal dementia, his wife Emma Heming Willis shared in the ABC special Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey – A Diane Sawyer Special, which aired on August 26.

Emma, 49, explained that Willis, 70, is supported by full-time caregivers in a nearby house, while she stays with their daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11. She said this arrangement was made with Bruce’s wishes in mind, adding, “He would want our girls to have a home that suits them, not one built around his condition.”

Although they live separately, the family spends time together daily, often joining Bruce for breakfast and dinner. Emma recalled the first hints of his illness, noting how he became unusually withdrawn and stopped enjoying routines he once loved, like school drop-offs. She admitted the changes were frightening but said the decision to maintain separate households provides stability both for him and for their children. She described his space as calm, structured and easier for him to manage, though she called the choice one of the toughest she has made as a caregiver.

The family disclosed Willis’s frontotemporal dementia diagnosis in 2023. The disease affects language, behaviour and personality. Emma revealed that the most difficult part for him has been losing the ability to communicate, which has pushed the family to find new ways to connect with him beyond words.

In the beginning, Emma thought she would have to shoulder caregiving entirely by herself. She often stayed awake at night to watch over him and kept him away from social events that could overwhelm him, trying to protect his comfort as his condition advanced.

Willis and Heming married in 2009. Before that, the Die Hard star was married to actress Demi Moore, with whom he has three adult daughters: Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 31. With Emma, he shares two younger daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, who continue to spend regular time with their father despite the challenges of his illness.

Modi Government’s New Online Gaming Law Confronts First Legal Challenge As A23 Approaches Karnataka HC

A23 moves to court against Modi order.

A23, one of India’s biggest online gaming platforms, has taken the government to court over its sweeping ban on money-based digital games. The company has filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court, becoming the first legal challenge to the new law that has already forced popular contests to close and created uncertainty for the industry, Reuters reported.

The dispute began after Parliament passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025, which later received approval from President Droupadi Murmu and became law. The Act bans all forms of real-money online games while encouraging e-sports and casual social games. The government has argued that the legislation is meant to curb addiction, money laundering and financial fraud linked to these platforms.

Following the approval of the law, companies such as Dream11, My11Circle, WinZO, Zupee and PokerBaazi backed by Nazara Technologies suspended their money-based offerings.

In its petition, A23 which runs rummy and poker said the law wrongly criminalises skill-based gaming and would force established platforms to shut down overnight. The company described the new law as an example of state paternalism and asked that it be declared unconstitutional when applied to skill games like rummy and poker.

The IT Ministry has not yet commented on the case. A23 describes itself as a gaming platform with over 70 million registered players.

Response From Other Companies

Not every gaming firm has decided to go to court. Gameskraft said it accepts the legislation and will adjust its business accordingly. A company spokesperson stated that it is committed to responsible innovation, player protection and cooperation with policymakers. Gameskraft has already suspended Add Cash and gameplay services on its rummy platforms including RummyCulture.

Dream Sports co-founder Harsh Jain also confirmed that the company will not challenge the new law. Speaking to Moneycontrol, Jain explained that around 95 percent of Dream11’s revenue disappeared overnight but added that the company does not want to fight the government and will instead focus on the future. He further assured that Dream Sports will not cut jobs despite the setback.

Dream Sports has been one of the most prominent players in India’s real-money gaming space but has now shut down its money-based games following the new law.
