Aishwarya, Abhishek Bachchan Sue YouTube for 4 Cr Over AI Deepfakes

In a landmark legal action, Bollywood icons Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan have filed a lawsuit against YouTube and its parent company, Google. The couple is seeking damages of Rs 4 crore (approximately $450,000), alleging that their intellectual property and personality rights have been violated by AI-generated deepfake videos circulating on the platform.

This legal petition follows a recent Delhi High Court order aimed at protecting their rights.

Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan sue YouTube

Filed on September 6, the lawsuit requests the immediate removal and a permanent ban on all videos that infringe upon the couple’s rights.

Beyond seeking the removal of existing content, the Bachchans have asked the court to mandate that YouTube implement safeguards to prevent their videos from being used to train competing AI models. This demand stems from what they describe as a growing concern over the misuse of AI in content creation.

Here’s what the lawsuit says:

According to legal documents reviewed by Reuters, the lawsuit specifically targets “egregious” and “sexually explicit” AI-generated material. The couple argues that YouTube’s current policies are insufficient and allow for further misuse as AI technology advances. They contend that the platform should have protocols in place to ensure that their names, voices, or images cannot be exploited by artificial intelligence.

The petition highlights a specific YouTube channel, AI Bollywood Ishq, which allegedly features more than 259 manipulated clips and has amassed over 16.5 million views. The legal filing cites examples, including a widely viewed video purportedly showing Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Salman Khan in a pool and another depicting Abhishek Bachchan in fabricated scenarios.

The actors’ petition also raised the broader issue of such content being used to train AI models, which could escalate the proliferation of infringing videos. In their filing, the actors stated, “Such content being used to train AI models has the potential to multiply the instances of use of any infringing content i.e. first being uploaded on YouTube being viewed by the public, and then also being used to train.”

What are the challenges:

The lawsuit challenges YouTube’s policy that permits creators to consent to their uploaded content being used for AI training. The Bachchans argue that this policy is dangerous, as it could lead to the multiplication of fake videos. “Allowing creators to consent to their videos being used to train AI models is dangerous, because content that misrepresents them could eventually be multiplied by AI itself,” they maintained.

While India currently lacks specific legislation for “personality rights,” this case is one of the most significant and high-profile examples of a legal battle at the intersection of celebrity, AI-generated content, and privacy in the country. The lawsuit underscores the growing need for regulatory clarity in the digital media landscape.

Rajnath Singh Sounds Warning To Pakistan On Military Build-Up; ‘Route to Karachi through’

Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday sent out a strong message to Pakistan over its recent military activities near the Sir Creek region, cautioning that any miscalculation by Islamabad would invite a response powerful enough to “change both history and geography.”

Speaking at a public gathering on the occasion of Shashtra Pujan, Singh accused Pakistan of deliberately reigniting the long-standing territorial dispute in Sir Creek despite multiple Indian efforts to settle the matter through dialogue.

“Even after 78 years of independence, a dispute over the border in the Sir Creek area is being stirred up. India has made several attempts to resolve the issue through dialogue, but there is a flaw in Pakistan’s intentions; its intentions are unclear. The way in which the Pakistan army has recently expanded its military infrastructure in areas adjacent to Sir Creek reveals its intentions,” Singh said.

Sir Creek, a 96-kilometre marshland in the Rann of Kutch along the Gujarat coastline, has remained a contentious border area between India and Pakistan for decades. Singh pointed to recent expansion of Pakistani military infrastructure in the adjoining region as a sign of renewed aggression.

“The Indian Army and BSF are jointly and vigilantly protecting the borders of India. If any misadventure is attempted from the Pakistani side in the Sir Creek area, it will receive a decisive response that will alter both history and geography,” he warned.

Recalling the 1965 war, Singh invoked past military achievements to underline India’s capabilities. “In the 1965 war, the Indian Army had demonstrated the capability to reach Lahore. Today in 2025, Pakistan should remember that one route to Karachi passes through the Creek,” he added.

His remarks come at a time of heightened concerns within security circles about Pakistan’s posture along the Gujarat border.

Rajnath Singh also spoke about Operation Sindoor while addressing soldiers in Gujarat’s Bhuj, emphasising India’s ongoing fight against cross-border terrorism. He noted that Pakistan had attempted to breach India’s defences during the operation, but its efforts were decisively repelled.

“During Operation Sindoor, Pakistan made an unsuccessful attempt to penetrate India’s defence system from Leh to Sir Creek. However, in retaliatory action, Indian forces completely exposed the Pakistani air defence system and sent a message to the world that Indian forces can inflict heavy losses on Pakistan whenever and wherever they wish,” Singh said.

Death Toll Rises to 69 in Philippine Earthquake as Search Operations Continue

Rescue operations continued in central Philippines on Wednesday as teams deployed backhoes and sniffer dogs to search for survivors buried under collapsed houses and damaged buildings. The efforts came a day after a powerful earthquake claimed at least 69 lives, with officials warning that the toll could rise further.

The magnitude 6.9 quake struck at around 10 pm on Tuesday, devastating Bogo city and nearby rural towns in Cebu province. Authorities reported that an unspecified number of residents remain trapped. Rescue efforts have been slowed by intermittent rainfall as well as damaged bridges and blocked roads.

“We are still in the golden hour of our search and rescue,” said Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV, deputy administrator of the Office of Civil Defence. “There are still many reports of people who were pinned or hit by debris.”

The tremor originated from an undersea fault at a shallow depth of about five kilometres. Its epicentre was located 19 kilometres northeast of Bogo, a coastal city of 90,000 residents where nearly half of the confirmed deaths occurred.

The Philippine government is assessing the full scale of damage and may seek international assistance. Expressions of solidarity poured in from the United States, Japan, Australia and the European Union. “We stand ready to support the Philippine government’s response as friends, partners, allies,” US Ambassador MaryKay Carlson posted on X.

In one mountain village hit by a landslide, disaster officials attempted to bring in heavy equipment to clear boulders and speed up search operations. “It’s hard to move in the area because there are hazards,” said local officer Glenn Ursal, adding that several injured survivors had already been taken to hospitals.

Fatalities were also reported from Medellin and San Remigio towns. According to officials, three coast guard personnel, a firefighter and a child died after collapsing walls and falling debris struck them while they were fleeing a sports complex during the quake.

The earthquake, one of the strongest to hit the region in more than ten years, struck while many residents were indoors. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology issued a brief tsunami warning that urged coastal residents of Cebu, Leyte and Biliran to move to higher ground, warning of waves up to one metre. The alert was lifted after three hours, but thousands of people, traumatised by the quake, stayed overnight in open areas despite the rain.

The disaster struck just days after a tropical storm battered Cebu and surrounding provinces, leaving 27 people dead and causing widespread blackouts and mass evacuations.

Classes and government work were suspended in quake-hit towns while officials inspected buildings for safety. More than 600 aftershocks have been recorded since Tuesday night. Teresito Bacolcol, director of the seismology institute, cautioned that rain-saturated hillsides were at heightened risk of landslides and mudslides.

“This was really traumatic to people. They’ve been lashed by a storm and then jolted by an earthquake,” Bacolcol said. “I don’t want to experience what they’ve gone through.”

Situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines is one of the world’s most disaster-prone nations, facing frequent earthquakes, volcanic activity and up to 20 typhoons every year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday unveiled a special ₹100 commemorative coin and postage stamp celebrating the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, marking the first-ever depiction of Bharat Mata on Indian currency.

Coin Design and Symbolism released by PM Modi

The ₹100 coin displays the national emblem on one side, while the reverse features Bharat Mata in Varada Mudra—a gesture symbolizing offering with the palm facing outward—accompanied by a lion. The design shows RSS volunteers (swayamsevaks) bowing before the figure in devotion.

The coin bears the RSS motto “Rashtriya Swaha, Idam Rashtraya, Idam Na Mama,” translating to “Everything is dedicated to the nation, Everything is the nation’s, Nothing is mine.”

“For the first time in the history of independent India, the image of Bharat Mata has been featured on Indian currency, which marks a moment of great pride and historical significance,” PM Modi stated at the Delhi launch event.

Postal Stamp Release

The commemorative stamp depicts RSS workers participating in the 1963 Republic Day Parade, highlighting the organization’s historical contributions to national events.

The Ministry of Culture organized the centenary celebrations, attended by RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

RSS Background

Founded in 1925 in Nagpur by Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, the RSS was established as a volunteer-based organization promoting cultural awareness, discipline, service, and social responsibility. Modi himself served as an RSS ‘pracharak’ (organizer) before transitioning to the BJP, which draws ideological inspiration from the Hindutva organization.

Social Service Emphasis

The celebrations aim to spotlight RSS’s community service activities, including blood donation drives, food distribution programs, and disaster relief efforts during events such as the Kedarnath and Bihar floods and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The commemorative releases represent official recognition of the RSS’s centenary, though the organization remains politically significant given its ideological connections to the ruling BJP. The depiction of Bharat Mata on official currency represents a notable symbolic development in Indian numismatics, reflecting the current government’s cultural and nationalist priorities.

India Expands Education Access with 57 New Kendriya Vidyalayas

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) across 17 states and Union Territories (UTs). The decision, made on Wednesday, is primarily aimed at catering to the educational requirements of the children of central government employees.

India to get 57 Kendriya Vidyalayas

A significant portion of the new schools, 19, which constitutes one-third of the total, have been sanctioned for Bihar. Furthermore, four KVs each will be opened in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, with the remaining schools distributed across states including Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Haryana, and the UT of Jammu and Kashmir, among others.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan commented on the expansion via a post on X, stating, “Covering 17 states and UTs, these 57 new KVs will expand the reach of quality and affordable education in aspirational, underserved, Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) and hilly areas and fulfil educational requirements of a vast population.”

These 57 KVs, falling under the civil sector, will also integrate Balvatikas to admit children at the foundational pre-primary stage, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Of the total, 50 schools will be sponsored by state governments and UT administrations, while the remaining seven will be sponsored by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

The establishment of the new KVs is projected to incur a total expenditure of approximately ₹5,862.55 crore over nine years starting from 2026–27. This includes ₹2,585.52 crore for capital expenses and ₹3,277.03 crore for operational costs, as detailed in a statement from the Union Ministry of Education (MoE).

PM Modi takes to X

Prime Minister Modi also took to X to highlight the approval, saying, “The establishment of 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas has been approved by the Cabinet. It is gladdening that KVs will include Balvatikas, nurturing children from the foundational stage. Several students will benefit, alongside the creation of many jobs. This is in line with our commitment to inclusive growth, particularly in aspirational districts, the Northeast and other remote areas.”

KVs are central government schools managed by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), an autonomous body under the MoE, which works to ensure uniform quality education nationwide. Currently, the KVS system operates 1,288 KVs, including three located internationally in Moscow, Kathmandu, and Tehran, serving an enrolment of 13.62 lakh students.

The MoE estimates that the new KVs (from Balvatika to Class 12) will benefit an additional 86,640 students and generate 4,617 permanent teaching jobs. This latest approval follows a December 2024 CCEA decision sanctioning 85 KVs. The ministry emphasized that the combined sanctioning of 142 schools addresses rising demand and ensures pan-India expansion, with priority given to regions not covered since March 2019.

A Canadian court sentenced a Winnipeg man to six years in prison for his role in a 2024 shooting and arson attack at Punjabi singer AP Dhillon’s British Columbia residence, with authorities confirming he acted on directions from India’s Lawrence Bishnoi gang.

Conviction and Sentencing

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced that 26-year-old Abjeet Kingra received two years for arson and six years for discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling. The sentences will run concurrently, with Kingra expected to serve approximately four and a half years after credit for time served since his October 2024 arrest. The court imposed a lifetime firearms ban and DNA order.

Gang Connection Confirmed

The judge determined Kingra, an Indian resident of Ontario, was acting under direction of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang based in India. The court concluded the attack on Dhillon’s Vancouver Island home was not an isolated incident.

Bishnoi Gang Designated Terrorist Entity

The sentencing followed Canada’s recent classification of the Bishnoi Gang as a terrorist entity that “engages in murder, shootings and arson, and generates terror through extortion and intimidation.” The India-based organization has been linked to multiple violent crimes across Canada.

Second Suspect at Large

Canadian authorities issued an arrest warrant for Vikram Sharma, a second suspect who allegedly left Canada.

“The sentencing of Abjeet Kingra is the result of months of dedicated investigative work by our officers… While we are pleased to see accountability in this case, our work is not done. We remain committed to locating Vikram Sharma and bringing him before the courts,” stated Inspector Stephen Rose, acting officer in charge of West Shore RCMP, according to CBC.

Attack Details

On September 24, 2024, gunshots were fired at Dhillon’s Vancouver home, with two vehicles set ablaze on the property. Police arriving at the scene found both vehicles “fully engulfed” in flames and evidence of multiple gunshots hitting the house. One resident was evacuated safely, with no injuries reported.

Following the incident, the Bishnoi gang issued death threats to Dhillon via social media. Kingra was arrested approximately two months later in Ontario.

Dhillon, known for hits including ‘Brown Munde’, ‘Dil Nu’, and ‘Insane’, has gained international recognition for blending 80s-style synth-pop with Punjabi music.

Maharashtra Permits 24/7 Operations for All Shops Except Alcohol Outlets

Maharashtra
Maharashtra

The Maharashtra government has authorized all shops and establishments, excluding alcohol-selling venues, to operate round-the-clock, according to an official circular issued by the Industries, Energy, Labour and Mining Department.

Policy Details by Maharashtra Govt.

The government clarified that most commercial establishments across the state can now remain open 24 hours a day. The only exceptions are businesses that serve or sell alcohol, including permit rooms, beer bars, and wine shops, which must continue adhering to regulated operating hours.

Response to Enforcement Issues

The decision follows multiple complaints received by the Maharashtra government regarding local authorities and police preventing businesses from operating 24/7. The notification aims to address inconsistent enforcement and provide clear guidelines to law enforcement agencies and municipal administrations.

Employee Protection Measures

Under the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act, 2017, businesses choosing to operate continuously must provide every employee a mandatory weekly break of 24 consecutive hours. This requirement ensures worker welfare remains protected despite extended operating hours.

Theatres and cinemas, previously included among establishments with regulated hours, have been removed from the restricted list and can now operate 24/7. This change provides additional flexibility for the entertainment sector.

Implementation and Enforcement

The government has notified local administrations and police departments about the clarification to ensure proper implementation. The circular aims to eliminate confusion and prevent arbitrary restrictions on businesses that comply with labor regulations.

The policy is expected to stimulate business activity and provide greater operational flexibility for establishments throughout Maharashtra. Extended hours may benefit sectors including retail, hospitality, entertainment, and services, potentially creating additional employment opportunities and economic growth.

Regulatory Framework

The 2017 Act provides the legal framework for shop and establishment regulations in Maharashtra, balancing business interests with worker protection. The latest circular reinforces existing provisions while expanding operational freedom for compliant businesses.

The move aligns with efforts to improve the business environment in Maharashtra while maintaining safeguards for employee rights and public interest concerns related to alcohol consumption.
