White House Issues Layoff Alert as Government Shutdown Continues for Third Day

The White House has cautioned that thousands of federal employees may soon face layoffs if the current government shutdown continues, adding to the growing political standoff in Washington.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that officials have already begun preparing contingency measures, with the Office of Management and Budget and other agencies assessing which departments could be most affected. “It is likely going to be in the thousands,” she said.

Leavitt placed responsibility on Democrats, accusing them of obstructing a funding agreement. “These conversations would not even be happening if Democrats had voted to keep the government open,” she remarked. She also criticized them for disputes over healthcare benefits for undocumented immigrants, arguing that the debate is “politics at the expense of Americans.”

President Donald Trump announced that he plans to meet with Budget Director Russ Vought to review potential cuts to federal programs. In a social media post, Trump described the deadlock as “an unprecedented opportunity” to reshape the federal government, presenting the situation as a chance to advance his agenda.

The shutdown began after lawmakers failed to meet the funding deadline, leaving several agencies without budgets. While essential services remain operational, many departments are already experiencing disruptions as negotiations remain at an impasse.

Republicans are pressing for an extension of current funding for seven weeks, while Democrats have sought broader concessions before agreeing to support any measure in the Senate. Meanwhile, the administration has reportedly suspended or redirected billions of dollars from projects in Democrat-led states, further intensifying partisan disputes.

Both parties continue to insist that they will not accept blame for the funding lapse, as the partial shutdown stretches into its second day.

Amazon Introduces ‘Add to Delivery’ Feature for Prime Members in US

Amazon has launched a new convenience feature for Prime members called “Add to Delivery,” enabling customers to add items to existing orders before they ship, eliminating the need to create separate purchases for forgotten items.

Amazon introduces new ‘Add to Cart’ feature

The service allows users to include additional products in already-scheduled deliveries through the Amazon app or mobile website. Eligible items display a blue “Add to Delivery” button below the standard yellow “Add to Cart” option on product detail pages. Tapping this button instantly adds the item to an upcoming delivery, with an undo option available for accidental selections.

Currently available exclusively to US Prime members, the feature covers specific categories including electronics, clothing, books, and groceries. It applies to same-day or next-day deliveries depending on availability, with no additional shipping charges for added items.

Testing and Rollout

Amazon tested the feature with select Prime members before beginning broader deployment.

The company designed the service to align with actual shopping behavior, allowing customers to respond to immediate needs without waiting for their next order or completing a new checkout process.

Access requires an active Amazon Prime membership, priced at $14.99 monthly or $139 annually in the US. The feature addresses a common frustration among online shoppers who forget items and must restart the entire ordering process.

Traditional Shopping Challenge

Previously, the customers had to create entirely new orders to purchase additional items after completing a transaction.

The new system streamlines this process, enabling multiple items to arrive in a single shipment even if remembered after the initial purchase.

International Expansion Unknown

Amazon has not announced plans to extend the feature to other markets, including India, where similar convenience options could appeal to frequent online shoppers.

The timeline for potential international rollout remains undisclosed.

The feature represents Amazon’s ongoing effort to reduce friction in the shopping experience while potentially increasing order values. By making it easier to add forgotten items, the company may capture sales that might otherwise go to competitors or be postponed.

The initiative reflects Amazon’s focus on enhancing Prime membership value through exclusive convenience features that differentiate the subscription service from standard e-commerce options.

UIDAI Revises Aadhaar Update Fees, Charges Increase from October 1

Aadhaar

The Unique Identification Authority of India has implemented higher charges for updating Aadhaar card information, with the revised fee structure taking effect from October 1, 2025, and remaining valid through September 30, 2028.

Revised Fee Structure for Aadhaar Update

Demographic updates including name, address, date of birth, mobile number, and email now cost ₹75, up from the previous ₹50, when processed separately. However, no additional fee applies if these updates are combined with biometric modifications.

Biometric updates covering fingerprints, iris scans, or photographs are now priced at ₹125, with a further increase to ₹150 planned from October 2028.

Document Update Costs

Document updates for proof of identity or address remain free on the myAadhaar portal until June 14, 2026. At enrollment centers, these updates now cost ₹75, increased from ₹50.

Aadhaar printouts obtained via eKYC or similar tools are priced at ₹40 during the current phase, rising to ₹50 in the subsequent period.

Free Updates for Children

UIDAI has waived biometric fees for specific age groups to encourage timely updates. Children aged 5-7 and 15-17 years receive their first mandatory biometric update free of charge.

For children between 7-15 years, the standard ₹125 biometric update fee is waived until September 30, 2026.

Home Enrollment Services

Residents unable to visit enrollment centers can request home services for ₹700 including GST. When multiple residents at the same address utilize this service, each additional person pays ₹350.

The fee structure will undergo review in October 2028, potentially leading to further adjustments based on operational costs and policy considerations.

Impact on Cardholders

The revised pricing represents a significant increase in maintenance costs for Aadhaar holders seeking to keep their information current. While children benefit from fee waivers during mandatory update periods, most adult services have become more expensive.

The changes reflect UIDAI’s updated cost recovery approach for maintaining the world’s largest biometric identification system, covering over 1.3 billion Indian residents. Citizens are advised to plan updates accordingly, particularly taking advantage of free online document updates before June 2026.

The latest wave of flagship smartphones is set to begin rolling out this month, bringing with it premium upgrades and fresh features. Among the many launches expected this year, all eyes are on Samsung’s next-generation Galaxy S26 Ultra. Although the official launch is still months away, leaks and rumours have already started building excitement. The newest leak comes in the form of rendered images of the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G, giving enthusiasts an early glimpse of what the device could look like.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G renders

Tech outlet Android Headline, in partnership with tipster OnLeaks, has unveiled CAD-based renders of the upcoming flagship. At first glance, the Galaxy S26 Ultra looks similar to the Galaxy S25 Ultra, retaining a flat front design but introducing more curved edges for a sleeker appearance. The standout change is the redesigned camera island, which accommodates three lenses, while the fourth lens and LED flash are placed to the side of the module. Reports also suggest that Samsung is moving away from its boxy design language, opting for a slimmer and more refined build.

The renders further highlight key elements of the device, including volume and power buttons on the right side, as well as the S Pen slot, SIM tray, and USB-C port positioned at the bottom. The display houses a front-facing camera, and the bezels appear slimmer and more polished than before. Collectively, these design tweaks indicate Samsung’s effort to refine the overall look and feel of its premium flagship.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G: Expected upgrades

On the performance front, the Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G is expected to run on either the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 or the Exynos 2600 processor, depending on the market. Camera upgrades remain a highlight, with leaks pointing to a quad-camera system featuring a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultrawide lens, a 50MP periscope telephoto lens with 5x zoom, and a 12MP telephoto lens with 3x zoom. The device may retain its 5000mAh battery, but this time it is rumoured to support faster 65W charging speeds.

With several months left before launch, more details are likely to surface, but early leaks already suggest that the Galaxy S26 Ultra is shaping up to be a fine-tuned evolution of Samsung’s flagship series.

Messi to Visit India in 2025, Special Message Sends Supporters Into Frenzy

Lionel Messi is set to return to India in December 2025, marking exactly 14 years since his last appearance on Indian soil. Organisers have finalised a mid-December window for a multi-city tour that will centre on fan interactions, celebratory events, and legacy showcases rather than on-field action.

“It is such an honour for me to make this trip. India is a very special country, and I have good memories from my time there 14 years ago, the fans were fantastic,” Messi said in a statement. His words struck an emotional chord, recalling his 2011 visit to Kolkata for an international friendly, and setting the stage for what promises to be a week dominated by nostalgia and immense fandom.

As per current plans, the tour is scheduled between December 13 and 15, covering four cities — Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi. Reports suggest the grand finale will take place in the national capital on December 15, with a possible meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the agenda. Unlike his previous trip, this visit will focus on large-scale fan events, stage appearances, and celebratory gatherings, highlighting Messi as a cultural icon beyond the pitch.

The tour is expected to begin in Kolkata, preserving the symbolic link between Messi’s first appearance in India and his return as a World Cup-winning captain. Mumbai will host high-profile engagements, while Ahmedabad and New Delhi are slated to provide a dramatic finish to the circuit. Although logistical and security considerations may alter finer details, multiple reports confirm the four-city format as the foundation of the itinerary.

Why this visit matters
Messi’s choice of words — “India is a very special country” — goes far beyond formal courtesy. It signals a recognition of the immense and loyal fan base he commands in a nation that has grown exponentially in football enthusiasm over the past decade. For countless young fans who have followed his journey through late-night broadcasts and social media, this tour will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see their icon up close.

Commercially, the visit is poised to be a landmark event for Indian football, drawing sponsorships, global media attention, and massive fan mobilisation. Culturally, it offers India a rare chance to situate its football aspirations within the global stage — a stage Messi himself can illuminate simply by being present.

Hybrid Compact SUV on Kia’s India Agenda to Expand Market Reach

Kia
Kia's new vehicle plans.

Kia Corp. is gearing up to introduce at least two hybrid SUVs in India as part of its strategy to align with the country’s new emissions policy, which aims to accelerate the transition to greener vehicles.

According to sources familiar with the plans, who requested anonymity due to the confidential nature of the information, the South Korean automaker will debut a sub-four-metre hybrid SUV within the next 18 months. A larger hybrid SUV is expected to follow, although the timeline for these launches is tentative and could change.

These upcoming models will position Kia India Pvt. Ltd. as the third mainstream carmaker to offer hybrid vehicles in the country, joining Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., which sells the Grand Vitara, Victoris, and Invicto, and Toyota India with its Hyryder and Innova hybrids—though both operate at higher price brackets. Domestic automakers Tata Motors Ltd. and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., meanwhile, have largely concentrated on electric vehicles.

Kia’s move highlights how automakers are expanding their portfolios to comply with stricter emission norms. A draft emissions policy released last week indicated a shift in focus from solely electric vehicles to promoting hybrids as part of a multi-fuel roadmap for cleaner mobility.

Kia India did not respond to requests for comment regarding the new hybrid launches.

Kia Hybrid SUV: Driving Change in India

The company’s compact hybrid SUV could serve as a catalyst for wider hybrid adoption in India, where cost and infrastructure limitations make dual-powered vehicles a practical alternative to fully electric cars.

As global automakers adjust their strategies in response to uneven EV uptake and tightening emissions regulations, compact hybrids are emerging as a key segment in India and other developing markets where small vehicles dominate. Currently, hybrids make up only around 2.5% of India’s passenger vehicle market, less than half the share of EVs, according to government registration data.

Introducing hybrids is therefore a crucial step for Kia, which lacks a mass-market EV and relies heavily on petrol and diesel models like the Seltos and Sonet. At present, Kia India sells the locally manufactured Carens Clavis EV and the imported EV6, while hybrids could broaden its appeal in the mass market.

Greece Faces a Standstill Amid Mass Strikes Over Extended Work Hours

Mass protests erupted across Greece on Wednesday as thousands of workers and union representatives took to the streets, effectively bringing the country to a standstill. The nationwide demonstrations were part of a general strike opposing the government’s new labour laws, which permit workdays of up to 13 hours.

The 24-hour strike caused widespread disruption as employees from both public and private sectors ceased work in solidarity. In Athens, taxis and trains were entirely non-operational, while buses, subways, trams, and trolleys ran on limited schedules. Across the country, services including schools, courts, public hospitals, and municipal offices were also severely affected.

In major cities like Athens and Thessaloniki, public transport ground to a halt, and essential workers such as teachers, hospital staff, and civil servants joined the strike. Maritime activity was also disrupted, with ferry crews keeping vessels docked in ports in adherence to union directives.

Beyond the opposition to labour law reforms, protests also addressed broader issues, including the interception of the Gaza Aid Flotilla and ongoing conflict in Palestinian territories.

‘Modern slavery’: The pushback against new labour laws

Civil service and private sector unions orchestrated the strike to challenge changes that introduce greater flexibility in working conditions, including overtime that could extend individual shifts to 13 hours. The new legislation limits total working hours, including overtime, to 48 hours per week, with a yearly cap of 150 overtime hours.

Union leaders argue that the reforms leave employees exposed to exploitation and unfair treatment. “We say no to the 13-hour shift. Exhaustion is not development, human tolerance has limits,” said the General Confederation of Workers of Greece, calling for a 37½-hour workweek and the restoration of collective bargaining rights.

Meanwhile, the pro-communist union, All-Workers Militant Front (PAME), accused Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ government of enforcing “inhumane hours and miserable wages,” describing the changes as “modern slavery.”

This wave of protests echoes similar demonstrations in 2024, when the government proposed a six-day workweek affecting private businesses in tourism and other sectors operating round the clock. At the time, unions condemned the move as “barbaric,” drawing thousands into the streets.

Kumar Sanu Takes Legal Action Against Ex-Wife Rita Bhattacharya, Asserts Artistic Legacy Can’t Be Changed

Bollywood playback legend Kumar Sanu has issued a legal notice to his former wife Rita Bhattacharya after her recent allegations accusing him and his family of denying her food and medical care during her third pregnancy. The 67-year-old singer, represented by his lawyer Sana Raees Khan, has taken legal recourse following the claims made in a recent interview.

In a statement, Kumar Sanu’s lawyer defended the singer’s reputation, calling the accusations false and damaging. “For over 40 years, Mr. Kumar Sanu has poured his soul into music, giving joy to millions and earning love and respect across the world. Hurtful lies may create noise for a moment, but they can never erase the legacy of an artist who has given a lifetime of music and memories to generations,” the statement read.

She further stressed that the singer’s honour would be protected. “We will ensure that malicious attempts to defame him are met with the full force of the law to protect his dignity, legacy and family honour. No individual or media platform has the right to malign a father’s honour or trade his family’s respect for sensationalism,” she added.

Rita Bhattacharya, however, has levelled serious charges against her former husband. Speaking to Siddharth Kannan, she alleged: “He denied them milk. He denied them medical care. You don’t know how much this man has tortured my children. The milkman told me he’d been told not to come over anymore, but he still gave me milk. Same with the doctor who delivered all three of my sons.”

She also recalled the hardships she faced after their separation. “I have seen the highest of highs and the lowest of lows in life,” Rita said, adding that during their divorce, she was given only Rs 100 and had to sell her jewellery to survive.

Remembering the 2005 Mumbai floods, she alleged that her ex-husband showed no concern when their children went missing during the chaos. “I was looking for them all night. It was terrifying. Even then, that man didn’t ask if his children are okay,” she said, referring to their sons Zico and Jaan.

Kumar Sanu and Rita Bhattacharya married in 1980, years before the singer rose to fame as one of Bollywood’s most celebrated voices. Their marriage ended in 1994 after a difficult phase, during which Sanu was also linked to actor Kunickaa Sadanand. In 2001, he married Saloni Bhattacharya, with whom he shares two daughters.
