Hours After Defiant Warning to US and Israel, IRGC Spokesman Naini Killed

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards spokesperson Ali Mohammad Naini has been killed, according to state media reports on Friday, as tensions from the ongoing US-Israel conflict continue to shake the Gulf region.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) serves as one of the main branches of Iran’s armed forces. Reports indicate that Naini died in strikes carried out by the United States and Israel. A statement cited by AFP described his death as the result of a “cowardly terrorist attack” carried out at dawn.

His killing came shortly after he issued strong remarks about Iran’s military capabilities. In comments reported by local media, Naini expressed confidence in the country’s missile program, stating that production remains steady even during wartime and that Iran has no shortage of supply. He also hinted at future escalation, warning that more developments were in store and that the conflict would grow increasingly intense.

The development marks another major setback for Iran’s leadership. Naini is the fourth high-profile figure to be killed this week, following the deaths of Ali Larijani, Gholamreza Soleimani, and Esmail Khatib in a series of strikes.

The situation has escalated sharply since late February, when US-Israeli strikes on Iran triggered a wave of drone and missile exchanges. Israel reportedly targeted the South Pars gas field, while Iran responded by striking Qatar’s Ras Laffan LNG facility, one of the largest of its kind in the world.

Although Israel has not officially confirmed its role in the South Pars strike, US President Donald Trump attributed the attack to Israel and stated that no further strikes on Iranian gas infrastructure were planned. At the same time, he warned that any continued Iranian attacks on Qatar’s energy facilities would provoke a strong US response.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz also signaled further action, suggesting that additional operations could follow. His comments came after Israel claimed responsibility for killing Iran’s intelligence minister, Esmail Khatib, as part of a broader effort to weaken the country’s leadership.

HDFC Bank moved quickly to calm investor concerns on Thursday after the abrupt resignation of its chairman, Atanu Chakraborty, who stepped down citing differences related to “values and ethics.” Newly appointed interim chairman Keki Mistry said the bank remains stable and there are no significant issues affecting its functioning.

In his first statement after assuming the role, Mistry emphasised that the board is focused on maintaining trust and confidence in the country’s largest private sector lender. “The board remains committed to safeguarding investor confidence,” he said, adding that there are “no material matters at this point of time.”

The bank’s chief executive also underlined continuity in operations, saying, “We will continue to ensure that trust in the bank is maintained.”

The assurances followed Chakraborty’s resignation with immediate effect. In a letter dated March 17, he pointed to ethical concerns but did not go into specifics. “Certain happenings and practices within the bank, that I have observed over the last two years, are not in congruence with my personal values and ethics,” he wrote to the board.

In a regulatory filing late Wednesday, HDFC Bank confirmed that the Reserve Bank of India had approved Mistry’s appointment as interim part-time chairman for a period of three months starting March 19.

Chakraborty, a former bureaucrat, had been serving as part time chairman since April 2021 and was reappointed in May 2024 for a term extending until May 2027. During his tenure, the bank completed its landmark merger with Housing Development Finance Corp, creating one of the largest financial services groups globally.

In his resignation letter, Chakraborty described the merger as a “momentous event” but noted that its full benefits are yet to be realised.

The sudden exit unsettled investors, with HDFC Bank’s US listed shares dropping around 8 percent following the announcement. Shares listed in Mumbai had already closed slightly lower before the news became public.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent injury has sparked concerns about his availability for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Portugal captain is expected to miss his country’s upcoming international friendlies, according to reports.

He picked up a hamstring injury during a Saudi Pro League match and has already started his recovery process. In a statement, Al Nassr said, “Cristiano Ronaldo has been diagnosed with a hamstring injury after the last game against Al Fayha. He started a rehabilitation program and will be under evaluation day by day.”

The club has not shared any clear timeline for his return. Portugal is scheduled to play Mexico and the United States in friendlies later this month, which are seen as important preparations ahead of the World Cup starting on June 11.

Ronaldo has enjoyed strong form this season, leading the Golden Boot race with 21 league goals. Al Nassr currently sits at the top of the table with 67 points from 26 matches.

Despite the injury, Ronaldo has been named in Portugal’s squad for the international break. He is also not in Saudi Arabia at the moment. Due to the ongoing Gulf conflict, he and his family are believed to have travelled to Spain and have not returned. Reports suggest he is staying at a mansion in La Finca in Madrid.

Fans across the world will be hoping he recovers in time for the World Cup, which could be his final appearance in the tournament. Ronaldo made his debut for Portugal in 2003 at the age of 18.

Since then, he has played in eleven major tournaments for his country and scored his first international goal at Euro 2004, where Portugal reached the final. He was part of the team of the tournament and was later appointed captain before Euro 2008. At Euro 2012, he was again named in the team of the tournament.

He scored four goals in the 2018 World Cup and captained Portugal to victory at Euro 2016. He won the Golden Boot at Euro 2020 and later featured in the 2022 World Cup, his fifth appearance in the competition. He has also led Portugal to UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

Meta’s $80 Billion Losses Lead Zuckerberg to Dial Down Metaverse Goals

When Mark Zuckerberg rebranded Facebook as Meta in 2021, he positioned the metaverse as the company’s future, describing it as “the next frontier” and aiming to make it central to Meta’s identity. Less than five years later, that vision appears to be fading, with the virtual world at the core of this ambitious plan now nearing shutdown.

Meta has begun pulling back from its metaverse push. In a recent blog post, the company announced that the Horizon Worlds app will be removed from the Quest store by the end of March and will no longer be available on VR devices after June 15. Following this, it will continue only as a standalone mobile app.

“We are separating the two platforms so each can grow with greater focus, and the Horizon Worlds platform will become a mobile-only experience,” the company said.

This move comes shortly after Meta cut more than 1,000 jobs at Reality Labs, the division leading its metaverse development.

Back in 2021, the company’s rebranding from Facebook to Meta signalled a major commitment to building the metaverse, which was envisioned as a shared digital space where users interact in real time through avatars.

“Our hope is that within the next decade, the metaverse will reach a billion people, host hundreds of billions of dollars of digital commerce, and support jobs for millions of creators and developers,” Zuckerberg wrote in a blog post at the time.

In reality, Horizon Worlds struggled to attract a large audience. Reports indicated that the platform never exceeded a few hundred thousand active users per month.

The financial impact has also been significant. Reality Labs has reportedly recorded losses of nearly 80 billion dollars since 2020. Earlier this year, the division also saw layoffs as Meta began redirecting its focus towards artificial intelligence and wearable technologies.

News of the shutdown, along with the scale of the losses, triggered strong reactions online.

“I forgot about this stupid s*** but imagine if they poured $80 billion into feeding the hungry instead of this failed cartoon universe that nobody wanted,” wrote one X user.

“Zuckerberg killed the Metaverse after burning $80 billion on cartoon avatars nobody used,” another said.

“Meta has announced it is shutting down its VR metaverse on 15th of June. All 5 users are reportedly devastated,” one person joked.

EC Chief Gyanesh Kumar Vows Level Playing Field Ahead of Voting in Five States

With Assembly elections in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry around the corner, the Election Commission has outlined an extensive plan to ensure that the polls are conducted in a transparent and impartial manner.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, in a conversation with Hindustan Times, stressed that the Election Commission of India maintains zero tolerance towards any form of violence, intimidation, or inducement aimed at voters. He chose not to respond in detail to the criticism raised by Opposition parties.

The Commission has issued clear instructions to both electoral and administrative authorities in all poll-bound states to prevent any malpractice throughout the election process. Officials have been specifically directed to ensure that there is no booth capturing, source capturing, or illegal vote stamping during voting.

To maintain fairness, the Election Commission has taken steps to create a level playing field for all political parties. It has acted against officials seen as biased and ordered a large-scale reshuffle of key administrative positions, including superintendent of police, district magistrates, district electoral officers, range officers, as well as senior roles such as Director General of Police, Home Secretary, and Chief Secretary.

In addition, 1,111 central observers have been deployed across the poll-bound states to oversee the process and ensure that elections are conducted in line with constitutional provisions.

The reshuffle has been particularly significant in states like West Bengal, where concerns were raised about officials being aligned with the ruling party. According to a former Chief Election Commissioner, some officers had previously faced punishment for carrying out their duties lawfully, while others who supported those in power were rewarded with influential postings.

Despite accusations from Opposition parties in states such as West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala that the Commission is biased in favour of the ruling party at the Centre, the Election Commission has remained firm, stating that it is carrying out its responsibilities without favouritism and in accordance with the law.

Argentina Loses Final Major World Cup Warm-Up, Leaving Scaloni’s Squad Untested Against Europe

Three months ahead of defending its World Cup title, Argentina has missed a valuable opportunity to test itself against European champion Spain after the Finalissima was called off.

Since lifting the 2022 World Cup, Argentina has dominated South American qualifying, losing just four of its 18 matches. The team also claimed the 2024 Copa América title and has won all 11 of its relatively low profile friendlies during this period.

Coach Lionel Scaloni had been hoping to face Spain this month to address key questions, including the fitness and availability of captain Lionel Messi, while also assessing his starting lineup and emerging young talent.

However, the conflict in the Middle East made it impossible to host the Finalissima in Qatar on March 27. The Argentine Football Association was unable to coordinate an alternative date with UEFA and also had to cancel a planned friendly against Qatar.

In response, the AFA quickly searched for replacement opponents during the current international window and eventually arranged a home match against Guatemala on March 31.

In a statement, the AFA said that details regarding the schedule, squad selection for this FIFA window, and the venue would be announced soon.

Argentina has yet to confirm any final preparation matches in late May ahead of the World Cup in June.

Speaking in January, Scaloni stressed the importance of players reaching peak condition close to the tournament. He said the critical phase begins from March onward, with players needing both form and a bit of luck to be fully ready.

There is now a possibility that Argentina could enter the World Cup without having faced a European opponent during the qualification cycle, which would be a first.

This situation reflects a broader strategy by the AFA to prioritise commercial gains, even if it means playing against lower ranked teams in less traditional football destinations.

Before the 2022 World Cup, Argentina had faced stronger opposition such as Germany, Italy, and Estonia. In recent years, however, the team has capitalised on its world champion status and Messi’s global appeal by playing matches against teams like Curaçao, Indonesia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, and Angola.

Uncertainty also remains around Messi, who will turn 39 during the World Cup. Addressing the possibility of featuring in his sixth World Cup, he said last year that he is taking things day by day while trying to remain realistic and maintain his fitness.

Argentina will begin its World Cup campaign against Algeria in Kansas City on June 16, followed by matches against Austria and Jordan.

Advanced Discussions Underway Between India and Canadian Firms for LPG Purchase

India is holding advanced talks with Canadian firms to secure liquefied petroleum gas as tensions in West Asia tighten the supply of this key cooking fuel.

According to a senior Indian official, discussions are underway with two Canadian companies, and the first shipments to India could depart from Vancouver as early as next month or by May at the latest. The official described the talks as urgent and focused on finalising offtake agreements.

The companies involved, AltaGas, based in Calgary, and Pembina Pipeline, are engaging with Indian state-run firms, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. The official said both sides are open to long-term agreements aimed at building stable and reliable supply chains.

Responding to queries, an AltaGas spokesperson said the company has been working since 2019 to position Canada as an energy exporter to Asia, currently supplying LPG to countries such as Japan, South Korea and China through its west coast operations. The spokesperson added that while options to supply India are being explored for the medium term, no volumes are currently being shipped to the country.

Energy has emerged as a key pillar in the renewed India-Canada relationship. On March 10, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney noted in a post on X that India’s energy demand is growing faster than anywhere else in the world and that Canada, as an energy-rich nation, is well placed to benefit from this opportunity.

Hydrocarbon cooperation, including oil, LNG, LPG and refined petroleum, was also highlighted in the joint statement issued after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Carney in New Delhi earlier this month. The statement welcomed ongoing discussions between Indian public sector oil companies and Canadian energy firms to expand LPG cooperation. It also noted progress towards concluding India’s first long term LPG supply deal with Canada and expressed confidence that such partnerships would diversify energy trade, enhance supply security and open new avenues across the hydrocarbon sector.

The current crisis appears to have sped up these developments.

Earlier this year, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson visited India, where he participated in India Energy Week in Goa and held meetings with several Cabinet ministers. Speaking after his return, Hodgson stressed that deeper engagement with India is essential, adding that Canada’s ambition to become an energy superpower is closely tied to its partnership with India.

‘Fly Back to India for Free’: US Unveils $2,600 Self-Deport Bonus in New Campaign

The United States Department of Homeland Security has announced free flights and an exit bonus of USD 2,600 for illegal immigrants, including those from India, to return to their home countries. In a social media post promoting the move, the department used images of the Taj Mahal along with well-known landmarks from Colombia and China.

The initiative, called Project Homecoming, began in May last year following the start of US President Donald Trump’s second term.

Go home with a fresh start

To promote its self deportation plan for illegal immigrants in the United States, the department shared visuals featuring the Taj Mahal and major landmarks from Colombia and China.

You can go home with a fresh start. Receive a free flight home and a USD 2,600 exit bonus when you use CBP Home to self deport, DHS said in a post on X.

The department has asked migrants to use the Customs and Border Protection app to begin the process. Through the app, they can register their intention to leave, submit their details, and receive information about travel assistance and the financial support available under the scheme.

According to DHS, more than 2.2 million illegal immigrants have used the programme since it began in January 2025.

The cost of deportation

The cost of forcibly deporting one person currently stands at USD 18,245.

DHS said that offering a USD 2,600 payment reduces the cost of a voluntary departure through the CBP Home app to about USD 5,100, saving more than USD 13,000 per person for taxpayers.

The programme allows migrants to return home as regular travellers without arrest, detention or restraints. It is described as a safe and orderly alternative that provides assistance and flexibility rather than fear, according to the official website.

When the scheme was introduced in May last year, DHS offered a USD 1,000 exit payment. This was increased to USD 3,000 in December if migrants chose to leave before the new year.

The payment was later revised to USD 2,600 in January this year.

Netizens react to DHS post

Social media users responded with sarcasm and memes to the department’s post on X. Some also criticised the use of public money for the scheme.

One user wrote, Can US citizens get USD 2,600 instead, while another said, What an amazing use of taxpayer dollars.

Can you send me some cash for being a legal, employed, natural born citizen who contributes to society, a third user asked. Another commented, This is what happens when you let internet trolls run federal agencies.

Govt’s New Rule Brings Relief, 60% Flight Seats to Be Free for Indian Flyers

In a significant relief for air travellers in India, the government has instructed all airlines to ensure that at least 60 percent of seats on every flight are available free of cost to promote fair access, according to a press release from the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

In addition, the government has introduced several other guidelines aimed at improving passenger convenience, transparency and consistency in airline practices, as stated in the official release.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has directed airlines to provide a minimum of 60 percent of seats on all flights free of cost to passengers. This move is intended to ensure fair access. Previously, only a limited number of seats were offered free of cost during ticket booking or online check in.

The government has also stated that passengers who book tickets under the same PNR should be seated together. Airlines are encouraged to place such passengers in adjacent seats wherever possible.

Other directives include ensuring that the transport of sports equipment and musical instruments is handled in a clear and passenger friendly manner, in line with safety and operational guidelines. Airlines are also required to publish transparent policies regarding pet travel.

Strict adherence to passenger rights has been emphasized, particularly in cases involving delays, cancellations and denied boarding. Airlines must clearly display passenger rights on their websites, mobile applications, booking platforms and at airport counters. Information about passenger entitlements should also be made available in regional languages to improve accessibility and awareness.

Joe Kent Steps Down Over Iran War, Asks Trump to ‘Reflect’ on Decision

The director of the United States National Counterterrorism Center, Joe Kent, announced on Tuesday that he has resigned because of the ongoing war with Iran.

He stated that Iran posed no imminent threat to the United States and argued that the conflict began due to pressure from Israel. Kent said he made his decision after careful reflection.

In a letter addressed to United States President Donald Trump, Kent wrote that he could not support the war. He said Iran did not present an immediate danger to the country and claimed that the United States had entered the conflict under pressure from Israel and its influential American lobby.

In the letter, Kent also expressed disappointment over the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, saying it offers no real benefit to the American people. He shared that he lost his wife Shannon in a similar war and noted that he himself is a veteran who has been deployed to combat eleven times.

He wrote that, as both a veteran and a Gold Star husband, he cannot support sending another generation to fight and die in a war that does not serve the interests of the American people or justify the loss of American lives.

Kent, once a strong supporter of Trump, had backed him and his foreign policies during the presidential elections of 2016, 2020, and 2024. He said that until June 2025, Trump understood that wars in the Middle East drained American lives and weakened the nation’s prosperity.

Addressing Trump directly, Kent praised his earlier leadership, saying that during his first administration he showed how to use military power decisively without dragging the country into prolonged conflicts. He pointed to actions such as the killing of Qasem Soleimani and the defeat of ISIS as examples.

However, Kent suggested that Trump was misled into the current war by an echo chamber of senior Israeli officials and influential figures in the American media. According to him, this group promoted a misinformation campaign that undermined the America First approach and encouraged pro war sentiment by portraying Iran as an immediate threat.

Kent warned that this narrative was false and compared it to the same tactics he believes were used to draw the United States into the Iraq war, which resulted in heavy losses of American lives. He urged that the country should not repeat that mistake.

He concluded by urging Trump to reflect on the situation in Iran and reconsider the direction of the conflict. Kent said that Trump has the power to change course and choose a different path for the nation. He ended his letter by calling it an honor to have served in the administration and the country.
