Netanyahu Urges Hamas Fighters To Surrender Instead Of Dying For Gaza Chief

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appealed directly to Hamas militants Sunday, urging them not to sacrifice their lives to protect the Palestinian faction’s Gaza chief Yahya Sinwar but rather surrender to advancing Israeli forces instead.

In a video address as the military offensive ravages Gaza, Netanyahu said dozens of Hamas members have already laid down arms seeing the group’s imminent collapse amid sustained IDF strikes. He labeled it “the beginning of the end of Hamas.”

“It’s over. Don’t die for Sinwar. Surrender now,” Netanyahu proclaimed, seeking to deter die-hard loyalists defending the Islamist rulers and commanders underground as Israel intensifies its hunt for tunnels and weapons sites.

An unnamed senior IDF officer also observed Sunday that “signs of Hamas breaking” are evident on the ground as command structures shred under unrelenting bombardment. He confirmed over half of the regional battalion leaders have been eliminated.

But the officer cautioned the end of hostilities remains elusive despite the disarray, with soldiers continuing intensive operations to methodically smash Hamas’s military apparatus threatening Israeli security.

The prime minister’s direct appeal reflects Israel’s psychological toolkit to complement kinetic warfare as it seeks to convince cornered militants, especially young recruits, that Hamas is fighting a losing war of attrition.

The call to lay down arms serves simultaneous purposes — shake fighters’ faith in leadership while inducing defections, and underline the heavy-handed scale of IDF’s strikes severely degrading morale and position.

Israel trims the wings of Hamas with each passing day. But Netanyahu hopes targeted messaging brings the fight to a swifter halt, given the rising toll being paid by Gazans used as human shields.

Markets Turn Flat After Opening Lower; Smallcaps Outperform

Indian stocks climbed Monday morning, with the benchmark Sensex crossing the 70,000 mark, as investors retained market optimism despite high valuations.

The BSE Sensex rose over 100 points to trade above 69,900 in early deals. The broader NSE Nifty 50 index also added 25 points to quote above 20,990.

Buoyant retail participation and strong foreign and domestic inflows are overlooking expensive valuations to fuel the ongoing rally, said VK Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

The market breadth remained positive, with small and mid-cap shares rising between 0.3% to 0.6%. Among sectors, IT, realty, and FMCG indexes they gained while pharma fell over 1%.

In stock-specific action, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories shares plunged 6% after the U.S. FDA handed the drugmaker a Form 483 for its research facility with three observations.

The advances come after the Sensex and Nifty closed 0.3% and 0.2% higher respectively on Friday. The Nifty had notched closing highs above 21,000 earlier last week.

The Indian rupee opened slightly higher at 83.37 per U.S. dollar Monday after weakening marginally in the previous session.

While foreign investors have poured $1.7 billion into domestic equities this month, crude oil prices trading near $76 per barrel weighed on the local unit and imported inflation.

Equities in Asia witnessed mixed trends Monday following a positive lead from Wall Street Friday. Investors now await key U.S. inflation figures due this week for clues on the Federal Reserve rate hike path.

Canada Decides to Double Funds Required For Student Visa

Canada’s Immigration Minister Marc Miller has announced a significant increase in the financial criteria for international students applying for a student visa, emphasizing the government’s commitment to safeguarding the education of the country.

The immigration minister also issued a warning, threatening to limit visas if provinces and educational institutions fail to take the necessary actions before the upcoming fall term. That’s not all, as the ministry has also decided to extend the temporary lift on the 20-hour work limit issued for international students, now extending until April 30, 2020. Milled stated the government’s concern about the potential for abuse in the system and aimed to target questionable institutions and employers that don’t provide a genuine educational experience. During a news conference, the minister also expressed concerns about some educational institutions working as “puppy mills” and emphasized the need to control the fraud and abuse that’s taking place in the education system.

The doubled financial requirement for the prospective students will be raided to USD 20,635, moving from the longstanding USD 10,000 threshold. This change aims to ensure international students have enough funds to cover the living costs in the country in addition to travel and tuition expenses. The amount will be changed annually based on Statistics Canada benchmarks for living costs.

Miller also commented on the need for educational institutions to manage the number of international students they bring in, considering their ability to provide assistance in off-campus accommodation.

The move is seen as a response to international students facing challenges in finding suitable housing and being forced to engage in exploitative jobs. Miller has also acknowledged the need for further discussions with provinces before any visa caps are brought in place, recognizing various tools available for complete regulation, including the closure of designated educational institutions that might not meet necessary standards.

Mamta Banerjee Attacks BJP as Mahua Moitra Expelled as Lok Sabha MP

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee has condemned the expulsion of her party MP Mahua Moitra from Lok Sabha today, calling it an open act of “vendetta politics” by the BJP.

Ms Moitra, 49, was expelled from Lok Sabha today after an Ethics Committee report that held her guilty of taking bribes in exchange for slamming the government. The Trinamool leader now faces accusations of getting cash and gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for posing questions in the nation’s Parliament, which sheds a negative light on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

Chief Minister Mama Banerjee commented, “This is vendetta politics of BJP. They killed democracy…It is injustice. Mahua will win the battle. The people will give a befitting reply to the BJP. They will be defeated in the next election,” She further added “It is a shame for parliamentary democracy. We condemn the way Mahua Moitra was expelled, the party stands with her. They (the BJP) can’t defeat us in the election, so they have resorted to vendetta politics. It is a sad day and the betrayal of Indian parliamentary democracy,”

Mamta Banerjee claimed that the ruling party denied the MP the opportunity to defend herself against the bribe accusations. Ms Banerjee said, “She (Ms Moitra) will return to Parliament with a bigger mandate. The BJP thinks the party can do whatever it wants as they have a brute majority. They must keep in mind that a day might come when they may not be in power,”

Even after a heated debate and demand from Ms Moitra and opposition members for her to speak, she was not given any kind of opportunity to defend herself before the vote took place. It was Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi who moved a motion against her for an expulsion based on “unethical conduct”, which was adopted by a voice vote.

Son Of Israeli Minister Dies In Gaza Blast Amid War With Hamas

The son of Israeli cabinet minister Gadi Eisenkot was killed in an explosion on the Gaza frontline Thursday, the military confirmed, marking another tragic loss for a father serving in the war cabinet amid conflict with Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Master Sgt. Gal Eisenkot died after an explosive device detonated near soldiers in a tunnel shaft in Jabaliya camp, northern Gaza. The former IDF chief of staff, now Minister of Regional Cooperation, received the devastating news while touring the army command headquarters.

The 36-year-old Eisenkot was a revered warrior dedicating his life to homeland security. Tributes poured in from Israeli leaders grieving along with the bereaved father they serve alongside directing war strategy.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the fallen sergeant as a “true hero.” President Isaac Herzog said no words could comfort the “unbearably tough, heavy sacrifice” of Israeli families now mourning lost sons.

Defense Minister Benny Gantz lamented the candle extinguished on the eve of Jewish holiday Hanukkah, vowing to honor the memories of those making the ultimate sacrifice by pushing for victory against Hamas forces.

Eisenkot was raised to love Israel and lived up to that, pledging himself – like 89 Israeli soldiers killed so far – to the sacred cause now claiming young lives. But the spilling of his blood only toughens national resolve.

As violence that erupted on May 10 continues claiming victims on both sides, Israeli forces persist in bombarding Gaza tunnels part of a Hamas underground network targeted during the offensive. But each life lost carries a colossal cost, testing morale.

The tunnel blast cutting short Eisenkot’s youth, service, and dreams is the latest reminder of the pains of war – a toll mounting daily for family and nation alike.

Sreesanth Slapped With Notice By T20 League Over Gambhir Verbal Spat

Controversial former India pacer S. Sreesanth landed in hot water after alleging “fixer” jibes from ex-teammate Gautam Gambhir during a veterans’ T20 match this week. He now faces action for contract violations from tournament organizers.

The Legends League Cricket (LLC) served Sreesanth a legal notice for bringing the league into disrepute by posting multiple videos condemning Gambhir’s alleged on-field remarks during Wednesday’s game.

The play was halted briefly after both players exchanged heated words when Gambhir’s India Capitals met Sreesanth’s Gujarat Giants in the Eliminator contest. While umpire match reports didn’t corroborate any personal barbs, Sreesanth slammed his former colleague.

“Without any provocation, he just kept on calling me something which is very rude…something that should not have been said,” Sreesanth said about the ugly spat that got intense.

Gambhir later posted a cryptic social media message to “smile when the world wants your attention.” But Sreesanth’s wife also jumped to his defense, calling the behavior “truly shocking.”

The LLC notice now states any further dialogue with Sreesanth will only happen once he pulls down the offensive videos that dent the league’s integrity and player conduct standards.

The Kerala pacer’s patchy past, including a lifetime ban in 2013 for spot-fixing that was later overturned, has continually mired his cricket career. Despite the U-turn by BCCI on the ban, the 39-year-old fails to evade controversies.

His latest run-in with Gambhir attracts more negative publicity amid attempts at image reform through T20 leagues. For the temperamental bowler, old habits die hard.

WhatsApp Testing Dedicated Reply Bar For Status Updates Like Instagram Stories

WhatsApp unveiled its latest privacy feature this week, enabling users worldwide to send self-deleting voice messages that vanish after a single listen.

The “view once” functionality, rolled out globally over the coming days, allows users to share sensitive information via voice notes that automatically disappear from chats post one playback.

Much like its photo and video counterpart launched last year, the new feature is signified by a “one-time” icon so recipients know the message can’t be saved, shared, or forwarded.

“You can now also share sensitive information over voice message with added peace of mind,” WhatsApp said in a statement Tuesday. The end-to-end encrypted messages must be opened within 14 days before expiring.

The feature comes as WhatsApp, the world’s most popular messenger owned by Meta, bolsters privacy protections amid rising user consciousness. It recently launched password-protected “secret” locked chats to boost security.

Disappearing media and voice notes to ensure that shared personal or confidential information doesn’t permanently reside in phones vulnerable to hacking. The platform enables practical privacy tools aligned with user communication patterns.

WhatsApp product lead Jason Lomax said the view once messages are especially helpful for sharing time-sensitive information like passwords or directions. Along with other recent additions, the company keeps finding “new ways to keep conversations secure and private.”

The voice messages signify WhatsApp’s next step toward ephemeral sharing and conversations as user behavior shifts in the digital age. The privacy-first platform aims to promote security while maintaining ease of communication.

BSF, Punjab Police Recover Pakistani Drone Near Border In Amritsar

A joint operation by the Border Security Force (BSF) and Punjab Police resulted in the recovery of a Pakistani drone in the Amritsar sector near the India-Pakistan border on Friday.

The Chinese-made DJI Mavic 3 Classic quadcopter drone was found in a farming field adjacent to Dhanoe Kalan village based on specific intelligence inputs, the BSF said.

The forces launched coordinated searches in the border area after receiving tip-offs about the unmanned aerial vehicle. The latest technology drone was detected lying in the fields of a village barely a few kilometers from Pakistan.

Quadcopters can surveil border areas while evading radar and thermal imaging surveillance systems. This exposes gaps along the sensitive frontier even as forces enhance detection capabilities against intruding drones.

The BSF and police are ascertaining where and how the drone flew across the border, and whether it transmitted photographs of Indian territory or dropped arms and ammunition.

The recovery comes amid heightened vigil to curb illegal cross-border intrusions that undermine national security. Ongoing searches aim to uncover underground channels aiding the infiltration of drones from Pakistan.

With Punjab gearing up for key by-polls, the episode highlights the risks of nefarious elements exploiting technology to stoke tensions. The drone finding sets off alarm bells but also showcases inter-agency coordination to neutralize emerging aerial threats.

Fighter Teaser Evokes Top Gun Vibes With Hrithik Roshan As Indian Maverick

The high-flying teaser for the upcoming action flick “Fighter” dropped Friday, featuring Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone, and Anil Kapoor as ace Indian fighter pilots.

The first glimpse sets the film up as India’s first aerial action movie, directed by Siddharth Anand. It shows the trio in fighter jet pilot uniforms pulling aerial stunts and dogfights.

In the 30-second teaser, Roshan especially channels Tom Cruise’s “Top Gun” swagger as the cocky pilot leading death-defying formations. It ends patriotically with him unfurling the Indian flag atop his aircraft against the tune “Sujlam Suflam.”

With slick aerial cinematography and a pulsating background score, “Fighter” aims to bring the thrill of combat flying and national pride to the big screen.

The teaser has evoked comparisons to “Top Gun” and enthused fans who praised the lead stars’ screen presence and garb. But they will have to wait for more flight action as the film releases on Jan. 25, 2024.

Backed by Viacom18 Studios, “Fighter” marks Anand’s third outing with Roshan. With aviation war cinema rare in India, the patriotic actioner seems poised to cruise new heights at the box office.
