CBSE Makes Languages Compulsory For Senior Classes In Curriculum Revamp

Ludhiana, December 12- The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced a major overhaul in the school curriculum by mandating language study across senior classes while de-emphasizing academic scorecards.

As part of sweeping reforms aligned with the new National Curriculum Framework, the CBSE aims to ease exam pressure and nurture holistic progress via updated teaching guidelines.

Dr. Vandana Shahi, a CBSE training coordinator, said all education boards must now follow the NCF’s vision stressing languages, arts, and vocational skills rather than bookish knowledge or cut-throat academic competition.

Student growth across diverse parameters will be evaluated under the “Holistic Progress Card” module replacing score-based assessments. Languages form a key element of the retooled curriculum.

For Grades 9 and 10, studying English, Hindi, and Punjabi will be compulsory unlike earlier. In Grades 11 and 12, students have to take up English alongside choosing Hindi, Punjabi, or another offered language.

The overhaul mandating languages in senior secondary levels marks a significant shift. While some students appreciate exam score relaxation, studying an additional language subject poses challenges.

However, experts considered it imperative to boost multilingual abilities aligned with India’s linguistic diversity. Students gain analytical skills and cultural appreciation by studying local and global tongues.

By making languages obligatory even post-Grade 10, the CBSE aims to rectify the gap where studying them became non-essential. The reform anchors cultural connectedness within a modern, holistic vision of education.

The benchmark BSE Sensex edged up 35 points to trade near 69,950, while the NSE Nifty 50 index added 25 points to quote at 21,022.

On the Sensex, metal firms Tata Steel and Hindalco along with auto majors Mahindra & Mahindra rose over 1% each. Lenders ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank ticked up, while telecom giant Bharti Airtel fell 1.5%.

In the broader market, mid and small-cap shares saw buying interest, indicating a positive undertone. Metal and auto indexes rose over 1% each, joining the advance in FMCG and healthcare stocks.

Jammu & Kashmir Bank shares jumped 6% after the lender launched a share sale to institutional investors to raise ₹750 crore.

On Monday, the Sensex added 103 points aided by late buying in telecom and oil & gas stocks. The Nifty gained 29 points to end near 21,000 levels.

Analysts await major global events this week, including U.S. inflation data and China’s economic growth numbers that will guide market sentiment ahead.

While foreign investors continued purchasing Indian equities, domestic flows also aided the recent up move. The undertone remains broadly positive, say experts.

Punjab Launches New Scheme for Doorstep Delivery of Government Services

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has launched its 2024 campaign in Punjab with Delhi Chief Minister Arvid Kejriwal joining his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann Singh in launching the doorstep delivery scheme in Punjab, the very same promise that won APP rich political dividends in Delhi, both in the assembly and local elections.

In the new scheme called – “Bhagwant Mann Sarkar Tuhade Dwar,” people of the state will now be able to get 43 different government services, right from issuance of birth, marriage, and death registration certificates by just calling helpline numbers from their homes.
This service will not only help make people’s lives easier but also help the state save more than 200 crores by completely getting rid of the logistical costs.

Bhagwant Mann Singh called the launch a “historic” event and stated, “The Aam Aadmi Party has scripted history today. In the days to come, when children will be asked when the problems of the common man having to visit government offices unnecessarily were solved, they will think back to today.”

Taking a jab at the Congress and the BJP, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal commented that AAP has walked the talk on its promises, unlike the previous governments in both states.
Mr Kejriwal said “”We started this scheme in Delhi five years ago. This scheme could have started in Punjab many years ago. What were the governments doing in these states for the last 75 years? They simply lacked the intent to implement these schemes”

Sikh Couple Visiting Canada Shot in Possible Case of Mistaken Identity

A Sikh couple visiting Canada from India last month was targeted in a shooting spree in the Canadian province of Ontario, which killed one person and was possibly a case of mistaken identity, according to the provincial police.

Jagtar Singh, 57, was killed while his wife Harbhajan Kaur,55, and the couple’s daughter were critically injured in a shooting near Mayfield Road, near Airport Road, along the Caledon-Brampton border on November 2021.

Officers from the provincial police and paramedics arrived on the scene only to find Jagtar Singh dead and rushed Kaur and their daughter to the hospital with critical injuries. Officers are looking into all aspects of this homicide, including whether the victims of the shooter’s crime were intended targets or not.

According to a source who is close to the victim, the family wants to make it clear that they’re not involved in anything that might have led to the shootings on November 20 in the home they were renting.
The source described them as “innocent,” and the victims had no ties to the criminal activity and had no connection to an illegal trucking operation at the address, which the Town of Caledon took down.

The couple’s son and daughter had arrived in Canada as students a few years ago and were the ones who sponsored their parents as visitors. According to the information posted by a family friend on a fundraising platform, more than 30 bullets were shot by the unidentified gunmen when the family was preparing to go to sleep in their rented home in Caledon.

More than 20 bullets were shot into the body of Kaur alone, which completely damaged her uterus, stomach, intestine, leg, kidney, and lungs, Paramvir Singh said on GoFundMe.
Doctors have told Parmvir that even if the doctor manages to survive, she won’t be able to recover for a long time.

Yadav, 58, the seasoned lawmaker from Ujjain South, garnered unanimous support from BJP MLAs at the ceremony where he touched Chouhan’s feet in a show of reverence.

With a doctorate and strong RSS roots, the Other Backward Class (OBC) leader boasts experience chairing key bodies like the state tourism board. He earlier served as education minister under Chouhan.

Insiders described Yadav as an administrative veteran well-versed in governance intricacies at both state and grassroots levels.

His elevation signals the BJP leadership grooming an OBC face with elections looming in 2024. The move allows smooth leadership change while upholding party unity.

Chouhan, the longest-serving BJP chief minister, provided stable governance through multiple terms after 2003. He now passes the baton on to his trusted cabinet colleague Yadav.

As an RSS loyalist, educationist, and ex-minister, Yadav checks many boxes for the party. His initial blessing by Chouhan sets the right optics, upholding the latter’s stature despite the shuffle.

The transition comes when the BJP desires consolidation after recent electoral setbacks. With strong organizational skills and deep local connections, Yadav seems the ideal CM pick to regain support in the run-up to 2024.

Prabhas-Starrer Salaar Part 1 Bags 'A' Certificate Ahead Of Dec 22 Release

The Prashanth Neel-directed action spectacle “Salaar Part 1: Ceasefire” has secured an ‘A’ certificate from India’s censor board ahead of its highly anticipated December 22 release.

The film starring pan-India star Prabhas underwent CBFC review and passed the certification process with the advisory rating and a 2-hour 55-minute run-time.

The rare ‘A’ category signals the movie contains heightened action violence and is meant for adult viewing — a testament to the large-scale visual ambition of Neel’s filmmaking and Prabhas’ on-screen machismo.

Lead actress Shruti Haasan and villain Prithviraj Sukumaran took to social media to share their excitement about completing final dubbing in multiple languages, spanning Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, and Malayalam versions.

Produced by Hombale Films on a mammoth budget, “Salaar” generated buzz with its high-octane trailer promising relentless action extravaganza.

Neel, renowned for the “KGF” franchise, teams up with Prabhas following the latter’s pan-Indian success with the “Baahubali” films to deliver a theatrical event for the ages.

The rare A rating sets the stage for the action genre’s biggest face-off: Neel’s dynamic filmmaking versus Prabhas’ screen machismo, with audiences guaranteed adrenaline-pumping entertainment.

As the year’s most awaited Christmas attraction, “Salaar” looks to pack a punch across India when it finally releases to satiate fans waiting three years for Prabhas’ return as a solo action hero.

The photos feature lead actor Jitendra Kumar reprising his role as Abhishek Tripathi, the reluctant panchayat secretary navigating village life in Phulera, Uttar Pradesh.

One image shows Kumar riding a motorbike with packed bags, sparking speculation on whether his character will leave the remote hamlet. Other snapshots display ensemble cast members on a bench, hinting at more quirky adventures.

Prime Video shared the sneak peek with the caption: “We know the wait is unbearable, so we got you a lil something from the sets!”

The post comes on the heels of Neena Gupta, playing Tripathi’s boss Manju Devi, posting a November video from the wrap party with co-star Raghubir Yadav.

After two successful seasons, anticipation runs high for the next chapter chronicling young urbanite Tripathi’s adjustment struggles in rural India.

Season 2 recently nabbed Best Web Series at the IFFI Awards, cementing the show’s appeal. Created by TVF, it premiered in 2020, striking a chord with pandemic-hit audiences through its authentic portrayal of small-town living.

While an official release date is still awaited, the first glimpse signals the return of the Phulera clan is likely soon. And fans can expect more quirky moments as Tripathi continues navigating the culture shock.

Citing knowledgeable sources, the report said Tan’s exit prompts a reshuffling impacting the tech giant’s most important product groups. His pending exit follows other key figures recently leaving hardware engineering teams.

As one of Apple’s influential product design leads, Tan shaped pivotal look, feel and functionality choices across the smash hit iPhone lineup. He also helped transform the Apple Watch into a booming wearables segment.

Tan collaborated closely with industrial design and engineering units responsible for executing the aesthetic vision and technical capabilities defining Apple’s identity. The quality, features, and direction of the company’s keystone devices fell under his purview.

His February departure is seen internally as a setback losing a decisions-maker guiding billion-dollar products. Tan’s exit will bring hardware VP John Ternus added responsibility for directing iPhone and Watch development.

Kate Bergeron, an esteemed Mac hardware executive, will assume oversight of future Watch design with Tan’s exit. She will orient long-term product vision.

Tan exits alongside quality oversight head Yannick Bertolus and hardware manager Laura Legros who retired in the past year. The brain drain suggests a period of change for Apple’s robust yet secretive design culture.

As competition intensifies in global device markets, the company will lean more heavily on remaining veterans to smooth leadership transitions and avoid disruptions across ever-crucial hardware branches.

Supreme Court Upholds Scrapping Of J&K Special Status, Orders Statehood Restoration

Supreme Court Upholds Scrapping Of J&K Special Status, Orders Statehood Restoration

The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the Centre’s 2019 move to abolish Article 370 granting special autonomous status to Jammu and Kashmir but directed the restoration of statehood at the earliest.

In a historic verdict, a five-judge bench held that J&K did not retain sovereignty after joining India, and Article 370 was only intended as a temporary provision. Hence, the presidential order scrapping it was constitutionally valid.

However, the court ordered the government to restore J&K’s statehood, ensuring assembly elections by Sept. 2024. It also upheld the bifurcation of Ladakh as a separate union territory.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said the use of presidential powers under Article 370 was not “mala fide.” He stated J&K constitutionally integrated with India under Article 1, without retaining internal sovereignty.

The temporary clause was meant to facilitate the transition to full application of the Indian Constitution in J&K, the court ruled. With the dissolution of the constituent assembly, the justification for Article 370 ceased to exist.

Justice SK Kaul advised setting up a “truth and reconciliation” committee to probe rights violations by state and non-state actors since the 1980s. This acknowledgment is the first step towards healing J&K’s wounds, he stated.

In sum, while validating the government’s reorganization of J&K, the apex court sought to balance integration with reconciliation. It made statehood for J&K non-negotiable despite upholding the removal of special status.

After three years under central rule, empowered grassroots governance now holds the key to healing and stability in the sensitive region.

2.8 Lakh Visitors Flock To Amritsar Trade Fair As Popularity Surges

The 17th Punjab International Trade Expo witnessed an unprecedented footfall of over 2.8 lakh visitors this year, the highest since its inception, forcing organizers to shut gates Sunday given the swelling crowds.

Officials estimate the numbers to cross 3 lakh on the final day Monday as attendees continue thronging the event venue at Ranjit Avenue. Long queues lined outside several pavilions with people waiting patiently to enter.

The recent edition surpassed last year’s then-record of 2.6 lakh people attending the expo according to organizers. In 2019, pre-pandemic footfalls stood at 2 lakh for the annual fair aimed at promoting local business.

Trade body PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the key organizers, said the exponential rise in popularity is testimony to the expo’s success in bringing together enterprises and the public each year.

With Sunday alone clocking 1.2 lakh visitors, attendees packed the venue as additional police personnel were deployed to manage participant flow and traffic congestion around the site.

Families enjoyed cultural programs while sampling regional and international cuisines from various food stalls, especially the popular Rajasthani plates.

Participants came from states like Tarn Taran to experience the extravaganza of handicrafts, artisan products, home decor, and garments alongside music concerts, and a reliance-themed wedding pavilion.

Some welcomed the marked increase in participating stalls compared to prior editions. The growing buzz has industry bodies requesting authorities enhance infrastructure and extend future exhibition durations given the tremendous response.

As the curtains come down on a vibrant showcase blending culture with commerce, the roaring success promises to keep spirits high while planning ever-grander events in Amritsar.
