Delhi Shivers As Temperature Dips To 6.8°C Amid Dense Fog

Delhi awoke to a bone-chilling Monday morning as dense fog enveloped the national capital, with temperatures dipping to 6.8°C.

The fog cover significantly reduced visibility and made commuting difficult. People were seen attempting to keep warm while jogging along Kartavya Path.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that at Safdarjung, Delhi’s base station, the minimum temperature stood at 7.1°C – a 1°C deviation below normal for this time of year.

A similar cold is forecasted through the week, with Friday potentially seeing the lowest temperature yet at 5°C as the cold spell strengthens its grip.

The IMD bulletin stated that minimum temperatures ranging from 5-10°C currently prevail over most parts of north and northwest India, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and more.

Dense fog was also reported in Bathinda, Punjab amid the ongoing cold wave.

Delhi’s minimum temperature on Sunday was 6.5°C, along with humidity oscillating between 35-100%. Up north in Haryana, Hisar was 6.2°C, Karnal 6.6°C, Rohtak 7.4°C and Narnaul 7.6°C.

The entire north Indian belt is currently grappling with below-normal temperatures, with forecasts of colder days ahead as winter sets in.

Wanted terrorist and underground don Dawood Ibrahim has been hospitalized in Karachi, Pakistan under high security, sources revealed.

The 1993 Mumbai serial blasts mastermind was admitted to an undisclosed hospital two days ago and is being kept on a floor with no other patients, with only top hospital staff and close family having access.

There has been speculation about Ibrahim’s health after unconfirmed social media reports claimed he was hospitalized following an alleged poisoning. Authorities have released no official statement on his condition.

Ibrahim has long been suspected of hiding out in Pakistan, although Pakistan has denied harboring him. Earlier this year, his nephew told India’s National Investigation Agency that Ibrahim resides in Karachi’s defense area near Rahim Faki, behind the Abdullah Ghazi Baba Dargah.

India has sought his extradition for his role as a ringleader in the 1993 Mumbai bombings that killed 257 people. He remains at the top of India’s most wanted list even three decades after the attacks.

The recent hospitalization under armed supervision indicates authorities take his security and medical care extremely seriously even as the fugitive mobster’s health remains shrouded in mystery for the public.

In the current stock market scenario, both key equity indices, Sensex and Nifty, are experiencing fluctuations and trading in the red. As of 10 am, the BSE Sensex recorded a decline of 109 points, reaching 71,375, while the NSE Nifty50 was at 21,440, down 17 points.

On the Sensex platform, ICICI Bank, ITC, PowerGrid, IndusInd Bank, JSW Steel, and Axis Bank registered losses, contributing to the downward trend. Conversely, early gainers included Sun Pharma, Reliance Industries (RIL), Titan, Bajaj Finance, Hindustan Unilever (HUL), and Wipro. JSW Steel faced a decline of over 3 percent due to controversies surrounding JSW Group chief Sajjan Jindal.

In the broader market, the BSE Midcap index maintained stability, while the SmallCap index saw a marginal gain of 0.3 percent.

The pharma sector showed resilience by gaining 1 percent, contrasting with slight sell-offs observed in the bank, power, and realty sectors.

Internationally, Asian markets displayed a mixed trend, with Japan’s Nikkei down over 1 percent ahead of the Bank of Japan’s monetary policy decision. Hang Seng also experienced a nearly 1 percent decline, while Shanghai and Kospi slipped around 0.5 percent each.

During the previous session on Friday, the S&P BSE Sensex demonstrated a significant rise of 970 points, closing at 71,484. Simultaneously, the NSE Nifty50 concluded at 21,457, marking a gain of 274 points. Investors are closely monitoring market dynamics and sectoral movements amid the ongoing volatility.

Actor Matthew Perry’s cause of death has been determined to be the “acute effects of ketamine,” according to an autopsy report released Friday by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

Perry, best known for playing the beloved character Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom “Friends” for 10 seasons, was found unresponsive in his Los Angeles home pool on October 28th and was pronounced dead at age 54. His death has been ruled an accident by the Medical Examiner.

The actor had been receiving regular ketamine infusion therapy to treat his anxiety and depression, Variety reported. His toxicology results showed ketamine was the primary cause of death, with drowning, heart disease, and the effects of an opioid addiction medication named as contributing factors.

Perry had been candid over the years about his struggles with addiction, even detailing in a 2022 memoir how a 1997 jet ski accident first led him to alcohol and painkiller dependence. More recently, he founded a sober living facility to help others facing similar battles.

His “Friends” co-star, Jennifer Aniston, gave an emotional statement following his shocking death, saying he had seemed happy, healthy, and committed to sobriety in their last communications.

The sudden passing of the beloved comedy icon at 54 years old has left his former castmates reeling. A foundation supporting addiction recovery efforts was started in Perry’s honor after the news of his tragic death.

The teaser opens with the suspenseful ticking of a timer, quickly escalating into a series of explosions in a densely populated area. Rohit Shetty shared the teaser on his official Instagram account, captioning it with excitement, “This one is a homecoming for me! Cars, cops, action, high voltage drama, and dialogue baazi. Back to basics!!! Indian Police Force 19th January onwards Streaming only on @primevideoin. Trailer coming soon…”

In line with Shetty’s promise, the teaser exudes a ‘back to basics’ vibe, showcasing suicide bomb attempts, intense car collisions, blaring police and ambulance sirens, and featuring the action prowess of Shilpa Shetty, Sidharth Malhotra, and Vivek Oberoi.

‘Indian Police Force’ is a seven-part action series that will have all the suspense, thrills, drama, and action. The official statement from the makers of the IPF said that the series is a heartfelt tribute to the selfless service, unconditional commitment, and fierce patriotism of cops across the country who put everything online in their call of duty to keep us safe.

Google And Canada Reach Landmark Agreement To Prevent Online News Ban

Google has finalized a significant deal with Canada to avert a potential ban on online news distribution. The agreement, announced at the end of November after prolonged negotiations between Ottawa and Google, involves a substantial annual payment of 75 million USD to Canadian media companies, with a major portion allocated to the print media.

Nearly two-thirds of the 75 million USD will go to the print media, while television and radio will receive a capped share of 30 percent. CBC/Radio-Canada, the Canadian public broadcaster, is allocated seven percent, leaving the remaining 63 percent for the written press. The decision to favor print media is attributed to its heavy reliance on online platforms for content distribution, according to a Canadian federal officer.

Minister of Canadian Heritage Pascale St-Onge hailed the agreement as a “historic” accomplishment for Canada. St-Onge highlighted the crisis faced by newsrooms, impacting journalism—the bedrock of democracy. Many media outlets are grappling with financial challenges, with some recently announcing layoff plans.

The annual compensation mandated by the Online News Act will be distributed among news organizations based on the number of full-time journalists they employed in the preceding calendar year, focused on producing original news content, as reported by CBC.

The Online News Act aims to support the struggling news sector of Canada which has seen a flight of advertising dollars and also witnessed the shutting down of hundreds of publications in the last decade. The Act was due to be enforced from December 19. Had that been the case, Google would have removed news content links in Canada from its domain.

The legislation also has implications for another tech giant, Meta, the parent company of Facebook. Meta, which has deemed the legislation “fundamentally flawed,” could face similar challenges. Since August 1, Facebook and Instagram have blocked news content in Canada to avoid the financial compensation required by the legislation, as reported by AFP.

The freezing weather is causing discomfort among Delhiites, with temperatures steadily dropping and air quality maintaining a ‘Very Poor’ status, registering an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 341 in the national capital, as reported by SAFAR India data at 7 am. Residents are resorting to bonfires, and the homeless are seeking sanctuary in night shelters, highlighting the severity of the cold, which has surpassed that of several hill regions.

At 7 am, the Air Quality Index in Anand Vihar was 383, Bawana recorded 384, IGI airport registered 324, JLN stadium showed 334, North Campus exhibited 329, and Narela displayed a reading of 339, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

IMD data reveals that the temperature in Narela was 6.1 degrees Celsius, RK Puram recorded 7.9 degrees Celsius, Rohini stood at 6.8 degrees Celsius, and New Delhi experienced 7.4 degrees Celsius this morning.

The IMD has further predicted dense fog in areas across the neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana for the next five days, adding a layer of challenge to the already harsh winter conditions.

The 2023 edition of the program aimed to provide a platform for entrepreneurs making a significant impact on society through their innovative solutions, contributing to humanity’s betterment.

The start-ups featured in this year’s event include Dveck Mobility Private Limited, introducing a device that can transform any bicycle into an electric vehicle in minutes. Haqdarshak, another participant, is a tech organization focused on simplifying access to government welfare schemes, emphasizing transparency. Marut Drones showcased smart drones for various farming applications, ONergy Solar worked towards making solar solutions affordable and accessible, and PRESPL presented green and sustainable biomass solutions.

The event was broadcast live on YouTube and internal channels for Adani employees.

Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, emphasized the importance of learning and technological immersion through collaboration with start-ups. Adani stated, “Adani Group welcomes start-ups to use us as a sandbox to deploy their solutions. Courage is one of the Adani Group’s values, and we applaud the courage that youngsters show in setting up start-ups.”

The Adani Group has a history of collaborating with start-ups, including iKure, a healthcare innovator in the Sundarbans, prosthetics technologist RoboBionics, and dharavimarket.com, a social enterprise supporting the holistic development of craftsmen and residents of Dharavi.

‘Green Talks’ was initiated in 2021, and in 2022, the Adani Prize for Social Enterprise was introduced to recognize and reward outstanding social entrepreneurs. The prize, totaling Rs 5 crores in funding, was awarded to five impactful social enterprises contributing to India and other developing regions.

The initiative aims to bring together social enterprises working across various sectors to accelerate transformative progress. ‘Green Talks’ serves as a space for open-source innovation, unrestricted discussion, and an incubator for concepts fostering long-lasting societal change.
