New Volcanic Eruption Erupts Near Iceland Town Grindavík

A new volcanic eruption began Wednesday evening near the Icelandic town of Grindavík, spewing lava at an estimated rate of 100-200 cubic meters per second, the country’s meteorological office said.

The eruption comes after days of intensifying seismic activity and GPS measurements indicating underground magma shifting towards Grindavík – a town of approximately 3,000 residents on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula.

Local authorities have raised alert levels and cautioned people to avoid the area until emergency crews can fully assess the situation.

Iceland is prone to volcanic activity as it sits between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates which constantly shift in opposite directions. Recent years have seen eruptions in uninhabited parts of the peninsula.

Just last month, Grindavík faced evacuations, road damage, and building cracks amid rising seismic activity. While an eruption was initially feared imminent, the geological unrest eased in subsequent weeks.

Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir expressed concern for residents but hoped that recently developed volcanic defenses would mitigate risks, according to the BBC.

With the plates’ divergent movements making eruptions difficult to predict, officials remain on high alert regarding the newest lava flows in the volatile region.

Govt Cuts Windfall Tax On Domestically Produced Crude Oil, Diesel Exports

The central government on Monday reduced the windfall profit tax levied on domestically produced crude oil and the export of diesel.

The Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED), as the levy is officially known, has been cut to Rs 1,300 per tonne of crude oil from Rs 5,000 per tonne earlier.

The tax on the export of diesel has also been lowered to Rs 0.5 per litre from Rs 1 per litre. However, SAED on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) exports have been introduced at Rs 1 per litre.

The revised tax structure will be effective starting Tuesday, as per a government notification.

India first imposed the windfall levies from July 1 last year on domestically produced oil and fuel exports by domestic refiners as their margins swelled on global energy price surge.

The taxes are reviewed every fortnight based on average international oil prices in the previous two weeks.

The reduction comes on the back of softening global crude prices since the last review. However, ATF has been brought under export duties now.

When imposed last July, India levied duties of Rs 6/litre on petrol and ATF and Rs 13/litre on diesel.

The windfall tax applies to domestic crude oil when prices breach $75/barrel. For fuel exports, it kicks in if refinery margins top $20/barrel.

Punjab CM Mann Announces 4% Hike in Dearness Allowance to Its Employees

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann announced a hike of 4 percent in dearness allowance for government employees on Monday. The revision has taken DA from 34 percent to 38 percent and will be in place from December 1, 2023.

The Punjab CM revealed the decision to raise DA via a social media post on X, saying, “Had a meeting with the representatives of Punjab State Ministerial Service Union today and discussed their issues in detail … Sharing the good news that we are going to give a new year gift to the employees…DA is increased by 4% which will be considered effective from 1st December 2023.”

Record 78 MPs Suspended from Parliament, 92 In Total

In a surprising move, 78 opposition MPs were suspended from Parliament on Monday, which is the highest number of suspensions in a day. This has led to a strong reaction from the Congress and other parties that have accused the BJP government of trying to bulldoze legislation in a Parliament that doesn’t have any opposition.

The suspension comes as both houses of parliament have seen repeated adjournment amid calls from MPs for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the security breach in parliament which took place on December 13, where two men jumped from the public gallery into the Lok Sabha Hall, and opened smoke canisters.

Earlier on Monday, Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla commented that a high-level probe is already looking into the security breach, and some of the suggestions presented by the opposition MPs have been implemented while others are already being looked at.
However, the opposition members were bent on a response from Shah and his resignation. Some opposition MPs even carried placards with their demands written on them. Birla objected to the placards brought into Lok Sabha, saying it lowers the dignity of the House.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi also appealed to opposition MPs not to wave placards, saying it was agreed at the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee not to carry placards.
The opposition MPs decided to ignore the appeals of Birla and Joshi and continued their protest, which led to the suspension of 33 members.

The Rajya Sabha also saw similar action. While 34 MPS were suspended from the remainder of the Winter season, 11 were asked to stay from the House pending an inquiry report on their conduct by the Committee of Privileges. The members were suspended after the House adopted a motion moved by Leader of the House Piyush Goyal for the suspension of 34 MPs for the remainder of the session and another one for referring cases of conduct of 11 MPs to the privileges committee.

'Salaar' Trailer 2 Promises High-Octane Action Bonanza

The second trailer for Prabhas-starrer “Salaar” dropped online today, offering a glimpse into the action-packed world of the titular character ahead of the film’s release on December 22.

Titled “The Final Punch”, the explosive new trailer combines heavy doses of adrenaline-fueled action sequences, emotions, and mass commercial elements – living up to director Prashanth Neel’s trademark energetic style as seen in the “KGF” franchise.

Fans are calling “Salaar” a spiritual sequel to “KGF”, with both being set in the violence-prone Kolar Gold Fields. The trailer reveals more of the plot revolving around the axe-wielding protagonist tackling his inner demons while confronting a system of corruption and injustice.

The Hombale Films project marks the first on-screen collaboration between “Baahubali” star Prabhas and Kannada director Neel of “KGF” fame, making it one of the biggest releases this year.

The pan-India film also stars a powerful ensemble cast featuring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Shruti Haasan and Jagapathi Babu.

With the film clashing with Shah Rukh Khan’s “Dunki” on December 22, the stage is set for a mighty box-office showdown to close out the year.

But going by the incredible response to “Salaar’s” promotional material so far, the high-stakes action saga seems ready to end 2022 with a mighty punch.

Uorfi Javed Calls Out Instagram Over Repeated Account Suspensions

Actress and influencer Uorfi Javed slammed Instagram over the repeated suspension of her account in an Instagram post on Monday.

Javed said her account has been deactivated three times in one week, faces regular glitches, and gets notifications daily about removed posts in violation of guidelines – only to have the same posts reinstated.

The former Bigg Boss contestant also claimed her follower count sees erratic rises and falls like a “rollercoaster”, expressing confusion on how to react.

Javed tagged Meta India in her post, seeking clarity and support to end the account disruptions. She sent the platform a strongly-worded letter venting frustration over the persistent issues.

Instagram suspends accounts found violating its community standards around nudity, self-harm, hate speech, and more. Actions taken range from content removal to warnings, temporary suspension, and even permanent bans.

Javed has often made headlines for her unconventional and bold fashion statements. While she has amassed a substantial following, her revealing outfits have also attracted online trolls.

Her latest appeal indicates dissatisfaction with Instagram’s complaint redressal mechanism concerning the temperamental account behavior, despite the platform’s guidelines aim to ensure it remains a safe, welcoming space.

Vicky Kaushal's 'Sam Bahadur' Enters Rs 100 Crore Club

Vicky Kaushal-starrer “Sam Bahadur” has crossed the coveted Rs 100 crore mark at the box office, the film’s makers announced on Sunday.

The Meghna Gulzar directorial, a biopic on India’s first Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, reached the milestone in 17 days since its release on December 23.

An elated Kaushal took to Instagram to express gratitude to fans for their support. However, the film lags behind Ranbir Kapoor-starrer “Animal”, which has also been performing strongly since its December 1 release.

“Sam Bahadur” chronicles Manekshaw’s leadership during the 1971 India-Pakistan war that led to the creation of Bangladesh.

Kaushal went through intense physical training to portray the iconic military hero, gaining 15 kg of muscle mass and honing horse-riding skills required for the cavalryman’s role.

Co-starring Sanya Malhotra as Manekshaw’s wife Silloo and Fatima Sana Shaikh as former PM Indira Gandhi, “Sam Bahadur” has won praise for its performances and execution.

As it continues its successful box office run, the film has validated Kaushal’s acting pedigree after his 2019 blockbuster “Uri: The Surgical Strike”. Audiences will be hoping this sets the stage for more such compelling historical dramas from Bollywood.

PM Modi Uses AI Translation At Kashi Event, Lauds Tech's Potential

Prime Minister Narendra Modi embraced artificial intelligence technology at the ongoing Kashi Tamil Sangamam event on Sunday, utilizing real-time AI translation to deliver his speech in Tamil.

Addressing the audience in Hindi as usual, Modi encouraged attendees to use earphones to experience the simultaneous Tamil translation powered by artificial intelligence.

“This was my first experience using this technology. In the future, I will continue to utilize it,” Modi stated, expressing optimism about AI’s capacity to improve communication.

The Kashi Tamil Sangamam celebrates the deep cultural ties between Tamil Nadu and Varanasi, spanning from December 17th through the end of December.

In his speech, Modi emphasized the significance of “coming from one home of Mahadev to His other home” by traveling from Tamil Nadu to Varanasi, also known as Kashi.

Over 1,400 dignitaries from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are participating in the month-long event featuring cultural programs, lectures, seminars, exhibitions, and more.

Modi’s use of AI translation technology aligns with his forward-looking approach to governance and desire to expand access to the latest innovations. As AI capabilities continue advancing, he envisions utilizing such tools more frequently to engage with the public across India’s linguistic diversity.
