Dunki First Half Review: SRK's Social Satire Depicts Dark Reality Of Immigration

The first half of Shah Rukh Khan’s comeback vehicle ‘Dunki’, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, offers an insightful look into the grim realities behind the phenomenon of immigration in the pursuit of better lives.

Marking a departure from Khan’s recent string of actioners projecting a comeback, ‘Dunki’ sees the superstar take on a more subdued role of a middle-aged army man helping a group of friends achieve their dream of settling in London.

While the film is pitched as a lighthearted comedy, the narrative sheds light on the desperation that drives India’s reverse brain drain in a sobering manner. It chronicles the true stories of youngsters in Punjab yearning for menial jobs abroad to escape their dreary existence back home.

The first half follows Khan’s character and his friends as they try hook or crook to make it to London – be it cramming to learn English or getting conned by agents. When all else fails, they even risk their lives illegally crossing borders out of sheer hopelessness.

Director Hirani smartly blends humor with the grim realities of immigration through a relatable, grounded lens. And SRK brings his impeccable timing to deliver comedy as well as pathos with finesse.

While Dunki serves as a reminder of Khan’s versatility, it also reflects the troubling state of affairs that continues to force the country’s youth to seek better prospects overseas at any cost. The film’s biting social commentary packs a punch amidst the laughs.

North India Shivers As Mercury Plunges; Delhi At 6.1°C, Ludhiana Records Low Of 2.8°C

North India continued to reel under an intense cold wave as minimum temperatures dropped drastically across Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Delhi registered a minimum temperature of 6.1 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Ludhiana in Punjab shivered at 2.8 degrees Celsius overnight.

Haryana’s Hisar and Bihar’s Gaya recorded lows of 4.2 degrees and 6.3 degrees Celsius respectively. Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut settled at 7.2 degrees.

The cold conditions prevailed as light rain has been forecast for Delhi-NCR on Friday night. Temperatures are expected to witness a bigger fall post-December 25, as per IMD scientists.

Delhi already logged a ‘very poor’ Air Quality Index of 340 amid low visibility due to moderate fog. Similar conditions persisted in other northern states as well.

The ongoing cold wave is likely to intensify further as winter tightens its grip. IMD has said minimums may continue dropping through the next few days across the Indo-Gangetic plains.

People have been advised to take precautions while venturing out early in the morning and late evening due to lower visibility caused by dense fog cover. Night shelters are also witnessing a surge in people taking refuge amid the harsh weather.

Global Outage Hits Twitter, Users Unable To View Tweets

Microblogging platform Twitter suffered a major outage on Thursday with users across India and other countries facing troubles accessing tweets and viewing timelines.

According to Downdetector, the issues started around 10:37 am IST with over 1,200 users reporting problems so far. The outage appears to have hit desktop and mobile platforms alike.

Most complaints logged on the tracking website seem to be centered around major Indian cities but Twitter also saw reports of downtime from international users in places like the UK, Canada, and Argentina.

While the Twitter website and app are opening, users are unable to view the latest tweets or refresh feeds indicating a backend technical disruption.

The company is infamous for its lack of communication during frequent service disruptions ever since Elon Musk took over the platform. It rarely reveals causes publicly.

This comes just months after Twitter faced multiple back-to-back outages in September this year frustrating users globally.

In parallel news, Musk had hinted at upcoming plans to introduce video support in Twitter’s live audio conversation platform Spaces by early 2023. The feature would allow speakers to stream video that shifts between them much like in Google Meet.

But the service reliability woes hitting Twitter again point to deeper engineering troubles that continue to plague the social network under its new management.

Parliament Breach Case: Bengaluru Techie Detained For Questioning

BENGALURU – A software engineer from Bengaluru has been detained by Delhi Police Special Cell for questioning in connection with the December 13 breach of Parliament security.

The detainee has been identified as Saikrishna Jagali, a multinational company employee hailing from Bagalkote district of Karnataka. He was picked up from his Vidyagiri residence late Wednesday night.

As per reports, Jagali is a college friend and past roommate of Manoranjan D., one of the key accused arrested earlier for the security lapse.

Jagali’s sister Spanda confirmed his detention, stating that her brother has fully cooperated with the investigation and maintains his innocence. She added that Manoranjan and Jagali were roommates in college previously.

In total six people have been taken into custody in the high-profile case so far. All accused were interrogated intensely by various units of the Delhi Police Special Cell on Wednesday before being handed to the Counter Intelligence Unit leading the probe.

The seven-day custody period of four arrested accused – Manoranjan, Amol, Sagar, and Neelam – is set to expire on Thursday.

Authorities are investigating potential personal links and local facilitation that enabled the five men to breach Parliament premises and subsequent security layers before being apprehended. Their motives also remain unclear.

Markets Turn Flat After Opening Lower; Smallcaps Outperform

Indian indices pared early losses and traded flat on Thursday after opening lower, mirroring weak global sentiment.

The BSE Sensex traded 100 points lower at 70,405, while the Nifty 50 index hovered around 21,130 – down 20 points, at 10:25 am.

Axis Bank, L&T, Sun Pharma, ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank, and JSW Steel dragged on the Sensex. However, gains in PowerGrid, Wipro, Tata Motors, Reliance, and NTPC capped the downside.

BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices moved higher in the broader market – outperforming benchmarks.

Sectorally, auto, banking, realty, and capital goods sectors traded lower. IT, metal, oil & gas, and power stocks saw buying interest.

This December has been the second best for IPOs since 1996, with 11 companies raising Rs 8,182 crore.

On Wednesday, Sensex had plunged 931 points to end at 70,506 and Nifty 50 shed 303 points to settle at 21,150 amid across-the-board selling.

Asian peers traded lower as Japan’s Nikkei fell 1.5% and Hang Seng, Shanghai Composite, and Kospi declined to 1%.

Market experts remain cautious in the near term given premium valuations, hawkish global central banks, and higher volatility typical of year-end.

The Union Government seems to be providing a major boost to redefine urban mobility and has selected Ludhiana among the four cities for which the city bus service will be introduced. Besides Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, and Patiala will also be a part of the Rs 20,000-core PM-eBus Sewa scheme.

The plans were disclosed by Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Kaushal Kishore in reply to a question of the Rajya Sabha MP from Ludhiana, Sanjeev Arora, during the ongoing winter session of the Indian Parliament.

The Punjab AAP MP wanted an update on the status of the augmentation of the city bus service scheme and the details of Tier-II and III cities proposed to come under the same scheme in the state. The Union Minister commented that the Centre had launched the PM eBus Sewa Scheme on August 16 with a focus on transforming bus operations through the deployment of electric buses in the public-private partnership mode and the development of associated infrastructure with central assistance of Rs 20,000 crore.

The Union Minister said, “As many as 169 cities falling in the range of 3 lakh to 40 lakh population size, as per Census 2011, including four cities – Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar and Patiala – are eligible to participate in this scheme,” and also stated that the process for implementation of the scheme has already been initiated by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

A team of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has reached Ludhiana to perform the ground survey for the launch of the scheme.

Mitchell Starc Becomes Costliest Player In IPL History At Rs 24.75 Crore Deal With KKR

Australian pacer Mitchell Starc scripted Indian Premier League history for a second time on Saturday by becoming the most expensive purchase ever at the IPL 2024 Auction.

The left-arm quick was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for a staggering Rs 24.75 crore, surpassing compatriot Pat Cummins’ record deal of Rs 20.5 crore with Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier in the auction.

Starc’s return to the IPL after an eight-year hiatus was highly sought after by franchises as valuable preparation for the T20 World Cup.

The bidding war saw Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals withdraw at Rs 9.8 crore and Rs 9.6 crore respectively, before Gujarat Titans challenged KKR who eventually secured the fast bowler’s services.

With his exceptional ability to swing the new ball at a searing pace and bowl skillful variations, Starc will bolster any bowling lineup.

His last IPL stint came in 2015 for Royal Challengers Bangalore, claiming 20 wickets in 13 games at a stellar average of 14.55.

Injury issues have since kept him out of the tournament barring a short 2018 contract with KKR which was eventually terminated.

Starc boasts an excellent T20I record – 73 wickets in 58 matches at 22.91. His ability will be crucial for KKR as they look to regain past glory after failing to qualify in 2023.

Pat Cummins Becomes Most Expensive Buy As SRH Signs Him For Record Rs 20.5 Crore

Australian star all-rounder Pat Cummins scripted Indian Premier League history on Friday by becoming the 2nd Most expensive buy ever after Sunrisers Hyderabad splurged Rs 20.5 crore for his services in the 2024 edition.

Cummins broke West Indian Chris Morris’ previous record price of Rs 16.25 crore paid by Rajasthan Royals in 2021, with Sunrisers engaged in an intense bidding war with Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore before securing the pacer.

The 29-year-old Aussie has enjoyed a phenomenal 2023, captaining Australia to ICC World Test Championship and ODI World Cup victories within a calendar year.

Although his T20 stats are modest, franchises remain keen to have Cummins on board for his all-round skills. His 15-ball 56* – the fastest fifty in IPL – against Mumbai Indians last year illustrates his explosive potential.

Sunrisers, who finished bottom last season, look set for a major turnaround by roping in Cummins along with other recent overseas signings like Wanindu Hasaranga and Travis Head.

With question marks around SRH’s leadership stocks, Cummins’ appointment could also solve their captaincy woes thanks to his astute cricket acumen and inspirational leadership.

IPL 2023 Auction: SRH Bag World Cup Winner Travis Head For Rs 6.8 Crore

Sunrisers Hyderabad secured the services of Australian batter Travis Head for Rs 6.8 crore in the IPL 2024 auction held in Kochi on Friday.

Head, whose crucial knocks helped Australia lift the recent ODI World Cup, saw intense bidding between SRH and Chennai Super Kings before the former got him on board.

The aggressive left-hander scored a match-winning 137 in the World Cup final against India last month. He also smashed 62 and took 2 wickets in the semi-final win over South Africa.

The 29-year-old Head last played in the IPL in 2017 for Royal Challengers Bangalore, and now returns to the league on the back of stellar international performances.

SRH will be banking on the southpaw to boost their batting after releasing Englishman Harry Brook who failed to find consistency despite being given opportunities both opening the innings and in the middle-order last season.

With the World Cup still fresh in memory, Head’s big-hitting abilities coupled with his handy off-spin make him a valuable addition for the Hyderabad outfit aiming to lift their second IPL trophy.
