Salaar Review: Prabhas Delivers Thrilling Action But Weak Storytelling Hampers Experience

Director Prashant Neel’s much-hyped action spectacle ‘Salaar’ hit screens today, riding high on the reliable shoulders of superstar Prabhas. Also featuring Shruti Haasan, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and Jagapati Babu, the film serves Prabhas fans their favored dish – high-octane fight sequences and mass heroism. But does Salaar manage to balance its aggression with an engaging story? Let’s analyze.

On the positive side, Salaar scores big through Prabhas’s towering screen presence and Prashant Neel’s vision for gargantuan, beautifully choreographed action set pieces. Right from the gritty opening portion to the climatic face-off, Salaar packs a visual wallop whenever bones break or blood spills. If you’re a die-hard Prabhas devotee enamored by his machismo, you’ll find plenty to cheer for.

However, once the initial thrill wears off, Salaar starts exposing its narrative weaknesses. The premise follows a generic template – two friends turned enemies battling for control of a lawless, gangster haven. Neither Prabhas’s Deva nor Prithviraj’s Vardha brings anything fresh to the table; their one-note aggressive acts are too familiar. The bloated screenplay nudges the film from one loud, bombastic scene to another without backing it with layered writing or innovation.

Making matters worse is the abrupt ending, which seems to have been deliberately kept open for a sequel. But the climax arrives sans an emotional payoff, leaving viewers slightly shortchanged.

The supporting cast including Shruti Haasan tries their best but the script doesn’t give them enough meat. Technically, Salaar hits the right notes with excellent camerawork and background score. But at nearly three hours, tighter editing could have enhanced its impact.

In conclusion, Salaar maxes out its action spectacle but doesn’t quite pass muster as a complete theatrical package. Die-hard Prabhas fans might overlook its writing issues but neutral viewers are likely to feel worn out and disengaged by the end. It’s a mixed bag that had the potential to be so much more. Here’s hoping the inevitable sequel raises the bar.

Dunki Fails To Recreate Shah Rukh Khan's Magic, Has Lukewarm Opening

Shah Rukh Khan’s highly-anticipated film ‘Dunki’ hit theaters today, but failed to match the incredible openings of his previous 2023 blockbusters ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Jawan’.

Expectations were high with Shah Rukh Khan’s third release of the year ‘Dunki’ ( Image Source: IMDb )

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, Dunki was expected to post big numbers on its first day, but middling reviews and tough competition seem to have hampered its box office prospects.

According to early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk, Dunki has collected an underwhelming Rs. 30 crores net domestically. In comparison, SRK’s ‘Jawan’ had smashed opening day records with Rs. 75 crores, while ‘Pathaan’ rode high on unprecedented hype to earn over Rs. 50 crores. Dunki’s day one numbers are dwarfed even by non-SRK films like Adipurush (Rs. 36 crores) and Animal (Rs. 35 crores).

Analysts attribute Dunki’s dull start to average word-of-mouth and the release of the much-awaited Prabhas-starrer ‘Salaar’ today. Salazar is projected to open at around Rs. 60 crores domestically, posing stiff competition to Dunki. The salt-and-pepper drama has received mixed reactions so far, with critics labeling it as sincere but lacking the magic of Hirani and SRK’s previous collaborations.

As the lucrative Christmas weekend kicks in, Dunki will be looking to stabilize its collections and leverage SRK’s enduring star power. But a lot depends on how Salaar fares and if Dunki manages to find appreciation over the weekend. The film will need strong word-of-mouth to emerge as a hit. For now, it seems unlikely that it will reach the blockbuster levels of Pathaan and Jawan.

Prague University Attack: Gunman Kills 14, Wounds 30 Before Being Shot Dead

A mass shooting at a university in downtown Prague on Thursday left at least 14 people dead and 30 wounded before the gunman was shot dead by police, authorities said.

The 24-year-old assailant opened fire inside a building at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, leading the school to urgently email students and staff to lock themselves in rooms.

Police confirmed multiple fatalities before later announcing that the lone attacker had been “eliminated”. However, evacuation of the building was still ongoing with several dead and dozens injured at the scene.

The exact death toll remains unclear as authorities continue securing the area near the university premises situated in a busy tourist hub leading to Prague’s Old Town Square.

Police have revealed the gunman also likely shot his father before the campus attack. Earlier reports linked him to two other deaths recently as well.

The entire country has been left stunned by the tragic incident. Prime Minister Petr Fiala canceled his scheduled trips to head to Prague as authorities investigate Central Europe’s deadliest shooting in decades.

Saturday has been declared a national day of mourning in the Czech Republic in the wake of the horrific attack at the university that has sent shockwaves across the nation.

COVID-19: India Logs 640 New Cases, Active Tally Rises To 2,997

India Logs 692 New Covid Cases, 6 Deaths; Active Tally Stands At 4,097

India on Friday reported 640 fresh COVID-19 cases taking its active caseload to 2,997, amid growing concerns over the spread of a new Omicron sub-variant.

This includes Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar district detecting its first case after months in a 54-year-old man.

The Noida resident, who works at a Gurugram MNC, had traveled to Nepal recently and is presently asymptomatic, officials said. His sample has been sent for genome sequencing.

The development comes as authorities remain vigilant over the highly transmissible BF 7 Omicron sub-variant that is behind the surge in China and parts of the US.

India’s COVID tally now stands at 4.5 crore, including 5.3 lakh deaths, of which one fatality was reported from Kerala on Friday. The recovery rate remains over 98%.

Officials said COVID testing has dipped considerably in recent months with only 640 out of over 3 lakh tests turning positive on Friday. They have appealed to people to follow safety protocols again amid the emerging threat.

Elderly citizens with co-morbidities have been specifically advised by the Centre to take precautions, avoid travel, and continue wearing masks as India aims to avert another COVID wave.

Minister of State for Electronics & IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated this in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

This comes after Foxconn recently withdrew from a joint venture with Vedanta to manufacture chip fabs in India, citing global economic conditions.

The development aligns with Taiwanese electronics giants like Foxconn seeking production diversification beyond China amid geopolitical tensions affecting supply chains.

Earlier, Foxconn received approval to raise investment in its upcoming iPhone manufacturing facility in Karnataka from $1.6 billion to over $2.5 billion. The additional funds will increase production capacity for Apple devices.

While most of the new capital is for Apple, Foxconn may allocate some to produce devices and components for other clients, including electric vehicle parts.

This signifies major expansion plans beyond just iPhones as the company establishes India as its manufacturing hub outside China.

The Parliament response confirms Foxconn’s semiconductor ambitions in India will now move ahead independently after exiting the JV with Vedanta.

The company’s domestic application to set up a chip fab unit comes as India aggressively positions itself as an alternative electronics hub amid changing global supply chains.

EC Tells Parties to Not Use Derogatory Words for People with Disabilities in Political Discourse

The Election Commission has asked political parties not to use derogatory words for people with disabilities in public discourse, saying the usage of such words in a speech by politicians and candidates can be interpreted as an afford to such people.

In an advisory issued to parties on Wednesday, the poll panel stated that the very foundation of democracy lies in the representation of all communities in the electoral process.
The EC said parties and their representatives shouldn’t use disability or terms referring to disability of PwDs in the context of “human incapacity” and should avoid comments that may be offensive to certain stereotypes. It added that any use of such language would attract punishments under the RPD Act.

Parities were also asked to ensure that all campaign materials, including speeches by leaders and social media posts, undergo an internal review process to find and correct any ableist, offensive, or discriminatory language.

The guideline says “All political parties should ensure and should declare on their website that they will use disability and gender sensitive language and etiquette as well as respect inherent human equality, equity, dignity and autonomy…All political parties shall make their public speeches/campaigns/ activities/ events accessible for all citizens,”

Political parties were also asked to give proper training to their workers and appoint a nodal authority to receive complaints from PwD regarding the use of ableist language. EC Said, “Political parties may endeavor to include more PwDs at levels such as members and party workers to shed the attitudinal barrier of the party and public and provide equal opportunities,”

The EC’s guidelines come after some activists raised concerns over the use of references to disability by political leaders to attack opponents during campaigns. A collective of disability rights groups had written to ECI on October 26 this year, asking DC to take action on the matter.

Sensex Gains 359 Pts, Nifty Settles Above 21,250 Backed By Financials

Indian shares rebounded on Thursday to close over 1% higher in a volatile session, aided by broad-based buying in financial, metal, and power stocks.

The Sensex ended 359 points higher at 70,865 after hitting a day’s low of 69,920 earlier. The broader Nifty 50 settled at 21,255, up 105 points after slipping below 21,000 intraday.

HDFC Bank, Kotak Bank, SBI, and Reliance Industries aided the Sensex’s rise, while Bajaj twins, Axis Bank, Maruti and ICICI Bank closed lower.

All sectoral indices closed in the green, led by media, metal, and PSU bank stocks. The midcap and smallcap gauges outperformed to climb 1.6% and 1.7% respectively.

The market recovery comes a day after a sharp slide on Wednesday when Sensex had plunged 931 points to 70,506 and Nifty 50 shed 303 points to settle at 21,150 amid across-the-board selling pressure.

Analysts said the intermittent volatility is likely to persist in the near term amid the year-end holiday season and concerns around stretched valuations.

They expect the ongoing consolidation phase to continue for a while before the market regains confidence and resumes its upward trajectory based on improving macros.

Egypt Brokers Talks Seeking Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Deal

Egypt and the U.S. have undertaken intense negotiations to broker a new Gaza ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad, although a deal remains uncertain.

Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh visited Cairo Wednesday to hold talks with Egyptian mediators seeking a truce. Discussions covered potential prisoner swaps and humanitarian relief to Gaza civilians.

However, a Hamas spokesperson asserted they won’t consider freeing more Israeli hostages until Israel ends its military strikes on Gaza and increases aid. They rejected further temporary pauses, demanding only permanent ceasefire terms.

Islamic Jihad’s leader is also set to visit Egypt soon for ceasefire deliberations. “These are very serious discussions, and we hope they lead somewhere,” the White House said.

But Israel insists that all remaining women and infirm male prisoners be released first. In turn, Palestinians convicted of severe crimes could be freed by Israel.

Over 200 Palestinians have died since violence escalated earlier this month prompted by an Israeli raid in the occupied West Bank. Gaza militants have launched over 1,000 rockets into Israel during the flare-up.

Egypt often plays mediator between Israel and Gaza groups given its ties with both sides. But securing a durable peace remains challenging with either reluctant to budge on key demands.

Intense diplomatic efforts continue seeking an end to recurring bloodshed even as both sides’ uncompromising stances persist. The mediation focus is on initial prisoner releases and aid measures preceding talks on the comprehensive truce.
