Bomb Threat Sent To RBI & Banks In Mumbai, Demands Resignation Of FM & Governor

The Reserve Bank of India’s Mumbai office received a threatening email on Tuesday conveying bomb threats targeted at a total of 11 locations across the financial capital, including prominent banks.

The email, purportedly sent by a sender identifying himself as ‘Khilafat India’, warned of bomb blasts by 1:30 pm on Tuesday while demanding the immediate resignation of RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Apart from the central bank headquarters, bomb threats were also received by leading private lenders HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, prompting a swift response from authorities. Preliminary investigations revealed the email accused the Finance Minister and RBI of being involved in the “biggest scam in the history of India.”

After being alerted, Mumbai Police launched exhaustive search operations covering all the 11 places mentioned as targets in the email. Bomb detection squads scoured the sites but did not find any explosive materials till the deadline passed. An FIR has been registered at the MRA Marg Police Station and cyber teams are tracing the email’s origin.

While the possibility of planted bombs has been ruled out for now, police officials said the threats are being taken very seriously, particularly due to the traumatic memory of the deadly 1993 Mumbai blasts orchestrated by fugitive mafia don Dawood Ibrahim.

The blasts had targeted 12 locations and claimed 257 lives while grievously wounding over 700 in the first-ever serial bombings of such nature. Police sources assured that all critical financial institutions are under heightened monitoring and surveillance systems have been activated to pre-empt any mischief.

Forensic experts pointed out that the email seems to have been drafted to cause alarm and make an impact rather than an actual bomb threat. But investigators are probing all angles given the grave implications and the iconic status of the targeted institutions. Officials expressed confidence that the culprits behind the threats would be caught soon.

Sensex Rallies Over 450 Pts; Nifty Tops 21,550 On Bullish Global Trends

Indian equity indices staged a smart recovery on Tuesday to close over 200 points higher, boosted by robust buying interest in metal, pharma, and auto stocks. However, the upside remained capped due to mild profit-taking in IT counters.

The BSE Sensex rebounded from the day’s lows to end 230 points higher at 71,337 levels. The NSE Nifty50 settled with gains of 92 points at 21,441.

NTPC, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), Wipro, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Tata Steel, and Asian Paints emerged as the top Sensex gainers. On the flipside, Bajaj Twins, Infosys, TCS, Tata Motors, and HCL Tech closed with losses.

Broader markets outperformed the benchmarks, with BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices rising 0.7% and 0.5% respectively.

Sectorally, metals led the charge with the Nifty Metal index surging 1.2% on an improved outlook for China demand. Healthcare, pharma, and PSU bank stocks also attracted healthy buying, while IT and media settled marginally lower.

Markets recovered smartly from intra-day lows led by stock-specific buying in quality names across sectors. However, trading volumes remain muted ahead of the monthly derivatives expiry, capping the overall upside.

Globally, optimism over reopening in China lifted Asian indices including Hang Seng, Nikkei, and Kospi by 1-3%. This also supported domestic metal and energy stocks. However, European indices were trading mixed as markets awaited cues from upcoming economic data.

Going ahead, the monthly F&O expiry on Thursday, the last leg of the Q3 earning season, and Union Budget 2023 will remain the major market drivers. Technically, the Nifty seems to have found support at 21,150 and is placed to hit 21,700 in the near term.

Manoj Bajpayee & His Daughter Finds 'The Archies' Underwhelming

Veteran actor Manoj Bajpayee recently revealed that he did not quite enjoy watching Zoya Akhtar’s coming-of-age Netflix film ‘The Archies’. However, his critique was met with both disagreement and scolding from an unexpected corner – his daughter!

In an interview, Bajpayee shared that he sat down to watch ‘The Archies’ which stars Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter Suhana Khan along with Amitabh Bachchan’s grandson Agastya Nanda on his daughter Ava’s recommendation. But about 50 minutes in, he frankly told Ava that he was not liking the film so far.

Ava concurred with her father’s assessment. “She was also not liking it,” Bajpayee said, surprised at the rare alignment in their opinions.

He added jokingly that Archie comics were not a major part of his childhood and he only remembers characters like Veronica and Betty in passing. However, his commentary did not go down well with Ava who scolded her father for interrupting her viewing experience.

“Every time I start scolding her, she scolds me in return,” laughed Bajpayee, who was amused and impressed by his daughter’s confidence. Ava also underlined that Bajpayee should be spending more family time instead of only critiquing her choice of entertainment.

The witty banter provides a heartwarming glimpse into the easy-going and progressive equation between Bajpayee and his teenage daughter Ava. It also highlights that forthcoming generations of viewers may not share the same pop culture touchpoints as previous ones.

While the father-daughter disagreed on ‘The Archies’, they found common ground in their outspokenness. Ava gave as good as she got from her famously plain-speaking dad – proving that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree in terms of candor!

Bajpayee himself is gearing up for the second season of his hit web series ‘Family Man’ while also juggling an array of film projects. Balancing professional success, public image, and personal time is a challenge he shares with many modern parents like himself.

Ranbir Kapoor Adds Humor To Kapoor Family's Christmas Celebrations

Actor Ranbir Kapoor brought his trademark humor to the annual Kapoor family Christmas lunch, as seen in a viral video shared by his cousin Aadar Jain.

The video shows Ranbir lighting up a Christmas cake as family members including Alia Bhatt, Agastya and Navya Nanda, Armaan and Aadar Jain gather around excitedly.

As Ranbir applies a lighter to set the rum-soaked cake ablaze, he jokingly exclaims “Jai Mata Di!” instead of the more customary ‘Merry Christmas’ greeting. His Indian twist on the tradition prompts laughter from the Kapoors and lightens up the festive mood.

Dressed in a casual black t-shirt and grey blazer, Ranbir was seen catching up with his family including his wife Alia and the newest member – his daughter Raha. Alia glowed in a black floral dress while Raha looked adorable in ponytails and a red plaid dress.

This was Raha’s first appearance at the annual Christmas celebrations that hold a special place in Kapoor family lore. Every year, several generations of the prominent film clan come together to celebrate Christmas with food, drinks, and banter.

Ranbir has been attending these reunions since childhood and is known to keep the atmosphere cheerful with his humor and spirited antics. The video of him shouting a Hindu greeting while kindling the Christmas cake perfectly encapsulates this lighter side.

Shared widely by Ranbir’s fans, the clip spread much joy online and was seen as a glimpse into the Kapoors’ warm family bonding. Most fans were delighted at little Raha’s unveiling and praised Ranbir for balancing stardom gracefully with his family values.

Hafiz Saeed’s Son Among Terror-Linked Candidates Fielded By PMML In Pak Polls

Hafiz Saeed's Son Among Terror-Linked Candidates Fielded By PMML In Pak Polls

The Pakistan Markazi Muslim League, a political front with alleged links to Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed, has announced its decision to contest the 2023 general elections across constituencies in Pakistan.

Notable candidates fielded by the PMML include Saeed’s son Talha Saeed who will be running from Lahore’s NA-127 seat. The party’s President Khalid Masood Sindhu will also take on former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif in a direct electoral face-off.

In a video message, Sindhu claimed the PMML aims to come to power to serve people and build an “Islamic welfare state” rather than indulge in corruption. However, critics have raised concerns over the party’s hardline religious ideology and apparent links with banned terror outfits.

The PMML’s electoral symbol is ‘chair’ and the party has pitched candidates for nearly all national and provincial assembly seats in the upcoming polls slated for February 2023. Earlier attempts to enter mainstream politics by Saeed’s supporters under the banner of the Milli Muslim League had failed to make any impact.

Hafiz Saeed, chief of the UN-designated terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has been in jail since 2019 serving multiple sentences related to terror financing cases. However, experts fear that the political legitimization of his ideological followers could still enhance radicalization in Pakistan.

Rising to prominence after the 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed 166 people, Saeed still carries a US bounty of $10 million on his head. India has repeatedly asked Pakistan to bring him and other perpetrators of the 26/11 attacks to justice. But critics say the Pakistani state’s enduring links with such groups remain an obstacle.

While the PMML currently insists it has no backing from Saeed, the entry of his son Talha Saeed into electoral politics points to attempts to keep his radical legacy alive. With a history of terror-tainted groups like LeT regaining strength after periods of dormancy, the latest political maneuvering merits scrutiny according to analysts.

Flight Operations Hit As Dense Fog Envelops Delhi, North India Reels Under Cold Wave

A blinding blanket of dense fog enveloped Delhi and several parts of north India on Monday, severely disrupting flight schedules and normal life while amplifying the ongoing cold wave.

Visibility dropped to dangerously low levels as a thick layer of fog engulfed Punjab, Haryana, Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and north Madhya Pradesh since early morning hours. Satellite imagery from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) showed the fog cover spreading through the Indo-Gangetic plains.

In Delhi, visibility at the airport fell below 100 meters in the early hours, resulting in delayed departure and arrival of as many as 56 flights. This included scheduled services of major domestic and international carriers which were delayed by around 30 minutes on average.

Officials said very poor visibility prevailed over other airports in the region as well, including Amritsar which saw visibility drop to 50 meters, and Lucknow with 800 meter visibility. The fog cover is expected to intensify further across the northwest, with visibility levels likely falling below 500 meters in the next six hours.

The scenario was similar in other parts of north India, where dense fog disrupted road, rail, and air connectivity. Places like Sirsa, Bhiwani, Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Patiala reported severely reduced visibility, amplifying hardships for daily commuters.

Meanwhile, the ongoing cold wave saw minimum temperatures dip further in Kashmir and other hilly areas. Srinagar recorded a bone-chilling minus 2.3 degrees Celsius Monday morning. Weather officials said the chilly conditions are likely to continue this week, even leading to cold wave situations in isolated pockets of north India.

Authorities have advised people to remain indoors as much as possible during early morning and late evening hours. Fog-related accidents are also common during such weather, necessitating extra precautions by citizens.

Twin Earthquakes Hit Leh And J&K's Kishtwar; No Damage Reported

Two mild-intensity earthquakes struck the union territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir in the early hours of Tuesday, December 27th. While the tremors awakened locals, no immediate damage or casualties have been reported so far.

According to India’s National Center for Seismology (NCS), a 4.5 magnitude earthquake hit Leh district in Ladakh at around 4:33 AM at a depth of 5 km below the surface. The epicenter was located at 34.73 degrees North latitude and 77.07 degrees East longitude.

Around an hour later at 1:10 AM, Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district experienced a milder 3.7 magnitude quake. This temblor occurred at a depth of 5 km below the ground at coordinates 33.36 degrees North latitude and 76.67 degrees East longitude.

In both cases, fears of casualties or property damage were quickly alleviated as local authorities and police confirmed that the earthquakes did not trigger any adverse on-ground impact. Residents of Leh and Kargil districts in Ladakh along with those in Kishtwar felt strong shaking sensations but suffered no harm.

Experts pointed out that the Himalayan belt frequently experiences low-intensity quakes measuring under 5 magnitude on the Richter scale. While such tremors momentarily create panic among citizens, they normally subside without requiring disaster mitigation efforts. However, scientists have advised locals to take precautionary measures and not ignore earthquake safety protocols.

The twin temblors on Tuesday are the latest in a series of at least 15 small quakes that have hit the mountainous regions of northern India over the past month. With the area prone to high seismic activity, experts have urged the administration to enforce construction norms so that loss of life and infrastructure can be minimized during stronger earthquakes.

Stock Markets Inch Higher As Metal, Auto Stocks Gain; Infosys Drags

Indian stock markets increased in early trade on Tuesday, lifted by consistent buying interest in metal, automobile, and public sector banking stocks. However, the upside remained capped amid caution ahead of the expiry of December derivative contracts this week.

In the broader markets, the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices gained 0.42 percent and 0.38 percent, respectively. ( Image Source: Getty )

The benchmark BSE Sensex climbed 94 points to hit 71,201 levels in morning deals. The broader NSE Nifty50 index also added 55 points to trade at 21,405.

Gains were broad-based with NTPC, PowerGrid, Tata Steel, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), Larsen & Toubro (L&T), and ITC trading as the top index gainers. The Nifty Metal index surged nearly 1% as investors snapped up metal counters following China’s reopening cues.

Top carmakers like Maruti Suzuki, M&M, and Tata Motors drove the Nifty Auto index 0.8% higher on renewed hopes of a demand revival. State-run banking stocks like SBI, PNB, and BoB attracted buying interest after the government infused Rs 6,000 crore capital into six public sector lenders.

However, software exporters remained under pressure for the second straight day, dragging Nifty IT index 1% down. Infosys shares plunged 2% to emerge as the biggest Sensex loser after reports stated that global major Daimler AG has decided to cancel the IT transformation projects contract it had awarded to Infosys. This development may dent Infosys’ future growth prospects.

Besides Infosys, other technology names like Wipro, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, and TCS also traded lower, capping the markets’ upside. Still, overall market breadth remained positive amid the ongoing holiday season, hinting at some year-end buying by investors.

Traders will keep an eye on the monthly F&O expiry for cues. Key levels to track would be Nifty’s psychological 22,000 mark on the upside and 21,200 on the lower end.

Massive Seach Ops Beings in Pooch a Day After Ambush.

Security Forces on Friday began a massive cordon-and-massive search operation in the forest area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Pooch district, right after five army personnel were killed and two others were injured in an attack by terrorists.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC), XVI Crops, and Lt Genn Sandeep Vain gave a visit to the area and reviewed the situation with the top Army and police officers, according to officials.

XVI Corps wrote on X, “Indian Army and White Knight Corps salutes the bravery and supreme sacrifice of four soldiers in Surankote yesterday while fighting the scourge of terrorism,”
An official stated that area monitoring with the help of Helicopters was also being conducted, and sniffer dogs have been pressed into service to track down the terrorist who ambushed the Army’s two vehicles in the area on Thursday afternoon.

An officer told PTI, “A massive cordon-and-search operation has begun this morning after a night cordon in the area,”

He also added additional troops have been deployed into the area to track down the terrorists who were involved in the firing.

On Thursday, around 3:35 PM, two army vehicles that were carrying personnel to the site of a cordon-and-search operation came under a heavy attack at a blind curve at Dhatyar Morh between Dhera Ki Gali and Bufiaz under the jurisdiction of the Surankote police station.

The officer quoted above said the Dhera ki Gali has been closed for traffic. Top officials of the Army and police are continuing to monitor the situation on the ground. It is believed that two or three heavily armed terrorists took position on hilltops and chose a blind curve to attack the army vehicles. After the attack, terrorists mutilated the bodies of at least two soldiers and took some weapons from them. According to security officials, an investigation of the area is being carried out to understand the pattern and use of weapons, including steel core bullets, in the ambush.

Bajrang Punia To Return Padma Shri After Ally Of WFI President Wins Federation Elections, Prompting Sakshi Malik To Retire

Bajrang Punia To Return Padma Shri After Ally Of WFI President Wins Federation Elections, Prompting Sakshi Malik To Retire

In a shocking development, star Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia has announced his decision to return his Padma Shri award to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This comes a day after BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s close associate Sanjay Singh was elected President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

Bajrang’s announcement closely follows the news of fellow wrestler Sakshi Malik deciding to retire from the sport altogether out of protest and dismay. Sakshi, Bajrang, and Vinesh Phogat had earlier in January launched a massive agitation demanding the ouster of WFI President Brij Bhushan over allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation.

However, the WFI elections saw Brij Bhushan’s loyalist Sanjay Singh convincingly defeat opponent Anita Sheoran by 40 votes to 7. The clean sweep by Singh’s panel, winning 13 out of 15 posts, triggered outrage among the protesting wrestlers.

An emotional Sakshi Malik announced her retirement, saying she had lost hope of getting justice and reform in the WFI under the new dispensation. Echoing her sentiments, an aggrieved Bajrang has now conveyed his decision to return his Padma Shri award to PM Modi.

The outcome of the WFI polls has left most wrestlers stunned and delivered a huge blow to hopes of the movement launched by Bajrang, Sakshi, and Vinesh earlier this year. With Brij Bhushan managing to get his close friend elected as President, wrestlers fear the culture of misogyny, corruption, and malpractice in the WFI will continue unchecked.

The dramatic developments have plunged Indian wrestling into chaos and disarray. The possibility of more wrestlers protesting or retiring out of anger cannot be ruled out. The newly elected WFI President Sanjay Singh will have his task cut out to regain the trust of the wrestling fraternity.
