Indices Scale New Highs; Nifty Tops 21,700, Sensex Over 72,300 In Early Trade

Indian Markets Volatile Ahead Of Budget, Fed Decision

Indian equity benchmarks continued their record-setting spree in early deals on Thursday, with Nifty reclaiming 21,700 and Sensex crossing 72,300 levels.

The 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex rallied over 270 points to hit a new all-time high of 72,360 in initial trades. The broader NSE Nifty 50 index also climbed over 70 points, reaching a fresh peak at 21,745.

Strong gains led the rally in PSU banks, and auto and metal stocks, offsetting losses in IT and cement shares. Bajaj Finserv, M&M, NTPC, Nestle, and JSW Steel emerged as top Sensex gainers.

In the broader market, midcap and smallcap indices rose over 0.3% each, trading in tandem with benchmarks. Among sectors, the Nifty PSU Bank index surged over 1%.

The domestic currency rupee also appreciated, opening at 83.33 against the US dollar, tracking an upbeat investor sentiment.

Analysts attributed the ongoing rally to positive cues from global markets as lower bond yields boosted appetites for riskier assets globally. Buying by foreign investors has also bolstered domestic equities.

However, market experts warned that global recessionary fears persist, which could spark bouts of volatility going ahead. Though valuations remain expensive, quality stocks across sectors continue to be lapped up.

Technically, the Nifty can test 21,800 if the 21,700 level holds. But the upside may remain capped ahead of the monthly derivatives expiry, with 22,000 remaining a key hurdle.

Sustained FII inflows coupled with supportive global trends point to the bullish momentum continuing in the near term. However, investors have been advised to keep close tabs on global developments.

Markets Hit Record High; Sensex Tops 72K, Nifty Scales 21,650

Indian Markets Trade Flat Amid Volatility

Indian equity benchmark indices rode the bull run to breach key milestones on Wednesday, with Sensex reclaiming 72,000 and Nifty topping 21,650 levels for the first time.

The 30-share BSE Sensex rallied over 700 points to end above the 72,000 mark at 72,038. Both Sensex and Nifty notched up their highest closing levels, extending gains for the fourth straight session.

The NSE Nifty50 also surged over 200 points to settle at a record peak of 21,655, crossing the previous all-time highs registered in October 2021.

The day’s rally was led by robust gains in metal, banking, auto, and telecom stocks amid optimism over ongoing Q3 corporate earnings. UltraTech Cements, JSW Steel, SBI, L&T, Airtel, and Tata Motors were the top Sensex gainers.

However, the upside remained capped due to mild profit-taking observed in IT, oil & gas, and power stocks. Among other indices, midcap and smallcap gauges also logged modest gains of up to 0.4% each.

Analysts noted that positive sentiment in global equities aided the domestic market’s rally, though rising crude prices and dollar strength against the rupee kept gains in check.

With central banks globally sticking to their hawkish stance, uncertainty continues to hover over world markets. But investors back home seemed keen on cherry-picking quality names across beaten-down sectors ahead of the budget.

Technically, the Nifty remains in a strong uptrend and needs to hold the 21,550 level to inch towards the 21,800 mark next. Market appetite for equities remains strong despite premium valuations, point out experts.

BSF, Punjab Police Recover Chinese-Made Drone From Tarn Taran

A joint operation by the Border Security Force (BSF) and Punjab Police on Tuesday led to the recovery of a Chinese-origin drone from the Tarn Taran district along the India-Pakistan border.

Acting on specific inputs provided by the BSF about a drone presence, search teams were mobilized on the outskirts of Mari Kamboke village in Tarn Taran.

During the combing operation launched around 6:30 PM, a damaged quadcopter drone was discovered lying in agricultural fields around the village.

According to the BSF, the recovered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been identified as a DJI Mavic 3 Classic model manufactured in China.

The development comes just a day after four packets of heroin, likely airdropped via a drone from across the border, were seized from a farmhouse in Fazilka district in a separate BSF-police joint exercise.

Security agencies have enhanced monitoring and surveillance mechanisms in border districts of Punjab amid intensified drone activity from Pakistan.

BSF data shows that over 150 drone cross-border crossings have been recorded this year so far, highlighting the mounting challenge posed by UAVs sent by smugglers and hostile agencies.

While drones have emerged as an innovative modus operandi for smuggling arms, ammunition, and drugs into Indian territory, the ones shot down or recovered recently have mostly been of Chinese make.

Experts point out that the use of Beijing-manufactured drones by terror elements across the border exposes the duplicity of China’s ties with both India and Pakistan.

Security forces are now utilizing advanced counter-drone techniques involving sky fences and drone catchers to intercept illegal UAVs entering border areas. Coordination with local police is also being enhanced by border guarding troops.

OnePlus 12R Design Revealed; Launching In Europe & Americas For First Time

Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus offered the first official glimpse of its next flagship killer – the OnePlus 12R – on Wednesday. The company also revealed that the R-series model will be launching beyond India and China for the first time, in Europe and North America.

In media images, the OnePlus 12R can be seen flaunting a fresh new design in two color variants – a cool blue inspired by the sea and a sophisticated gray inspired by melted iron. Both feature a smooth matte-metallic frame and the trademark Alert Slider now relocated to the left edge.

According to OnePlus, shifting the position of the iconic slider allowed its engineers to incorporate an advanced integrated antenna system. This helps enhance network performance significantly during intensive tasks like multiplayer gaming.

By bringing a more affordable yet power-packed R-series phone to Western markets this year, OnePlus is responding to user demand for an optimized gaming device at a competitive price point.

Previous R-series models like the OnePlus 9R and OnePlus 10R have been limited to Asian markets so far. But with gaming becoming more graphic-intensive worldwide, the company sees an opportunity to take on rivals by expanding the 12R globally.

While OnePlus is expected to pack the 12R with top-notch internals like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, the focus remains on delivering a fast and smooth software experience. Leaked images point to a major design overhaul as well featuring a curved display and glass-metal sandwich build.

By taking a dig at brands launching multiple variants of their flagships, OnePlus reaffirmed its commitment to optimizing hardware and software in tandem. With an excellent price-performance proposition, the OnePlus 12R seems primed to shake up the premium smartphone landscape worldwide when it launches soon.

Salim Khan "Happy" About Son Arbaaz's Second Marriage, Says "No Need" To Interfere

Veteran scriptwriter Salim Khan opened up about his son Arbaaz Khan’s second marriage to girlfriend Giorgia Andriani on Sunday, saying he gave his blessings to the union without any interference.

In an interview, Salim expressed happiness over the surprise nikah ceremony held at Arpita Khan’s residence. Attendees included the Khan-daan – Salman, Sohail, Helen, and brother-in-law Sanjay Kapoor.

When asked if Arbaaz had consulted him before remarrying, Salim remarked, “He just mentioned he was getting married again and I said that’s fine. I felt there’s no need for my permission at this stage.”

The celebrated screenwriter said his 46-year-old son was perfectly capable of making personal decisions as an “educated, mature” individual. Interfering in anyone’s life often complicates matters, according to Salim Khan.

He stressed the wedding was “not a crime” and he gave his blessings wholeheartedly to the bride Giorgia Andriani and the groom. “If Arbaaz is happy, nothing else matters. They decided to marry based on their mutual understanding,” Salim added.

The veteran creative voice behind classics like Sholay and Deewar said he remains an advocate of personal freedom. His progressive stand marks a refreshing change from conservative reactions that second marriages often trigger in India.

After his separation from ex-wife Malaika Arora in 2016, rumors of Arbaaz’s closeness with Giorgia had been rife for several years. The two had made appearances together but never formally acknowledged a relationship until now.

Images of their intimate nikkah have since gone viral, with entertainment media reporting happily on the Khan family’s latest celeb wedding. Arbaaz’s teenage son Arhaan was also spotted at the ceremony, giving his father his blessing.

Citing Humiliation By WFI Chief, Vinesh Phogat To Return Her Khel Ratna Award

Star Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has announced her decision to return the prestigious Khel Ratna and Arjuna Awards, becoming the latest high-profile athlete to join the award wapsi protests against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

In a scathing letter to PM Modi, Phogat alleged that WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had spared no efforts to emotionally torment women wrestlers by making insulting statements.

“He compared us to prostitutes…I request you to spare 5 minutes from your busy schedule and listen to his speeches. That will make you understand how much he has humiliated us,” her letter read.

Phogat urged the PM to review clips of Singh’s offensive speeches to get a true grasp of the suffering caused to women wrestlers. Her sharp words come days after Sakshi Malik announced retirement from the sport while Bajrang Punia publicly surrendered his Padma Shri medal.

The intense award return spree stems from the controversial election of Singh’s close aide Sanjay Singh as WFI President last week. The wrestlers have alleged that Sanjay’s elevation will allow the sexual harassment-accused Singh to continue pulling strings.

Vinesh Phogat has been at the forefront of the anti-WFI movement along with Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik for weeks, staging high-profile dharnas. But with their key demand of Singh’s complete removal from wrestling remaining unmet, the grapplers have now turned to returning awards as gestures of protest.

While Sanjay Singh has defended his election as above-board and slammed the suspensions, pressure is increasing on authorities to remedy the situation. With the expanding award wapsi saga denting India’s sporting reputation, the ball seems to be in the government’s court to take stern action and deliver justice.

After Delhi Blast, Israel Issues Travel Advisory; Asks Citizens To Stay Alert

The Israeli National Security Council (NSC) has released a travel advisory for Israeli nationals visiting India following Tuesday’s low-intensity blast near the Israeli embassy in New Delhi.

While no injuries were reported in the explosion that occurred in a green belt area less than 2 km from the embassy, the NSC has recommended steps for Israelis in India to take precautions against potential dangers.

The advisory urges Israeli citizens here to remain vigilant in public spaces including hotels, restaurants, and malls. They have been asked to avoid openly displaying Israeli symbols or publicizing travel itineraries on social media to minimize risks.

Attending large gatherings without adequate security and revealing real-time visuals or information have also been discouraged given worries of recurring incidents.

The recommendations come from a place of abundant caution, NSC officials clarified, as memories remain fresh of the devastating 2008 Mumbai attacks that specifically targeted Jews at the Chabad House and other locations.

Delhi Police Special Cell teams and forensic experts thoroughly inspected the blast site near the embassy in the Chanakyapuri diplomatic enclave on Tuesday evening. Anti-terror agencies like the NIA have also been roped in to get to the bottom of the matter.

In a statement, the Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed there were no casualties due to the explosion and that a joint investigation with Indian agencies is underway. Examining CCTV footage and speaking to eyewitnesses form part of the probe.

While the cause behind the blast is unclear currently, Israeli authorities do not wish to take any risks regarding the safety of their citizens considering India’s global terrorism vulnerabilities. Ties between the two countries remain strong otherwise, officials underlined.

The public advisory puts Israelis here on alert without pressing the panic button for now. However, until the Delhi bomb planter is nabbed, apprehensions are likely to prevail among Israeli visitors and expats about potential repeat incidents.

Rahul Gandhi Makes Surprise Visit To Meet Protesting Wrestler Bajrang Punia

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday made a surprise visit to a wrestling arena in Haryana, where he met star grappler Bajrang Punia amid intensifying protests by wrestlers against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

Gandhi reached the Virendra Arya Akhara wrestling facility in the Jhajjar district early morning and engaged with the wrestlers in their training routines. This included doing some wrestling exercises himself guided by the coaches.

His unannounced visit came even as wrestlers like Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik have returned their prestigious awards including Padma Shri, Arjuna, and Khel Ratna to protest the recent WFI polls.

Bajrang and other wrestlers interacted with Gandhi for almost an hour, acquainting him about their ongoing agitation seeking systemic reforms in Indian wrestling.

Coach Virendra Arya said they were pleasantly surprised when the Congress MP landed up at 6:15 AM and mingled freely with the wrestlers like any other athlete. Gandhi displayed decent knowledge about sports in the conversations, he added.

However, the coach also remarked – “What could he (Gandhi) do, only the government can do something…Nationals will take place but what would be done with this issue at hand?”

The wrestlers have been demanding action over allegations of sexual harassment against WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and calling for his removal. Last month, his close aide Sanjay Singh won the WFI polls, triggering outrage and award wapsi by the aggrieved wrestlers.

Bajrang Punia had spearheaded the campaign against the WFI for several weeks at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar earlier this year. By meeting him, Gandhi has signaled his solidarity with the struggling athletes fighting injustice within the sports federations.

However, effecting real change can only be ensured by the central government stepping in, as per the coach’s comments. The drama surrounding Indian wrestling is far from over.

Sensex Rallies Over 450 Pts; Nifty Tops 21,550 On Bullish Global Trends

Indian indices extended their winning run on Wednesday, with benchmark Sensex rallying over 450 points to reclaim 71,800 levels. Bullish trends across global equities propelled the move on renewed optimism over China’s reopening. Buying across the board also lifted the Nifty50 index past the 21,550 mark.

The BSE Sensex jumped 458 points to hit an intra-day peak of 71,795. The NSE Nifty50 index climbed 139 points to touch 21,580 in morning deals.

UltraTech Cement, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, JSW Steel, Bajaj FinServ, and SBI led the Sensex pack with gains of 2-4%. Only NTPC and Asian Paints settled marginally lower.

Midcap and Smallcap indices rose over 0.5% each in the broader market, outpacing the benchmarks.

Sectorally, the upside was broad-based. Nifty IT index led the charge with 0.7% gains as IT stocks continued to attract buying interest from investors. Bank, realty, metal, and auto stocks also witnessed strong momentum.

Adani Green Energy shares rose over 2% after the company announced the sale of solar energy assets to the JV between AGEL and TotalEnergies.

Global stock markets also traded higher as China’s reopening from COVID curbs bolstered hopes of a revival in economic activity. Easing Omicron situations in parts of Europe and America also enthused investors.

Back home in India, earnings season, monthly auto sales data, and preparations for the Union Budget 2023 will dictate market direction going ahead. Technically, the Nifty has the potential to scale 21,700 levels if the up move sustains.
