Robert De Niro Calls Out Donald Trump and The US

0

Just across the street from the Manhattan courthouse where Donald Trump’s hush money trial is taking place, the Biden campaign held a press conference featuring Hollywood legend Robert De Niro.

“I grew up here and feel at home in the streets … I love the city,” De Niro said. Reflecting on the tragic events of September 11, he solemnly noted, “The Twin Towers fell just over there,” expressing his profound connection to downtown New York City.

De Niro didn’t hold back when discussing Trump, accusing him of seeking “to sow total chaos” and calling him a “tyrant.”

“Donald Trump wants to destroy not only the city but the country, and eventually he could destroy the world,” De Niro asserted. He emphasized that Trump “does not belong in my city. I don’t know where he belongs, but he certainly doesn’t belong here,” dismissing him as a “grubby real estate hustler masquerading as a big shot.”

The Taxi Driver star claimed that the former president would “use violence against anyone who stands in the way of his megalomania and greed,” and that’s why he joined the Biden campaign: “because the only way to preserve our freedoms and hold on to our humanity is to vote for Joe Biden for president.”

“Yesterday was Memorial Day. It’s a good time to reflect on how Americans fought and died so that we may enjoy the freedoms guaranteed to us by a democratic government … Under Trump, this kind of government will perish from the earth,” De Niro said. He warned, “If Trump returns to the White House, you can kiss these freedoms goodbye.”

“We don’t want to wake up after the election saying ‘What again? My God, what the hell have we done?’” he quipped. “If Trump gets into the White House, he will never leave.”

The 80-year-old actor questioned, “Is that the country we want to live in? Do we want him running this country and saying ‘I’m not leaving, I’m dictator for life’?”

“This is not a threat. This is a reality,” De Niro emphasized.

His words were bolstered by the presence of law enforcement officers Harry Dunn and Michael Fanone, who bravely defended the US Capitol on January 6th. De Niro praised them as “true heroes” and expressed gratitude, saying, “They stood and put their lives on the line to defend this country and our democracy.”

MotoGP 2024 Gets Cancelled in India

0

The India leg of MotoGP, scheduled for September 20-22, has been cancelled this year. However, the event is expected to be included in the next season, with the race rescheduled for March 2025 to avoid the harsh summer conditions.

The inaugural Indian Grand Prix, held at Greater Noida’s Buddh International Circuit in September 2023, was shortened by three laps due to riders’ complaints about the heat and humidity. Many race marshals fainted in the extreme heat, and Spain’s current championship leader, Jorge Martin, caused last-lap drama by unzipping his suit due to dehydration.

Pushkar Nath Srivastava, COO of promoters Fairstreet Sports, stated on Tuesday that the decision to cancel the September race was made jointly by Dorna (MotoGP’s commercial rights holder), the Uttar Pradesh government, and the promoters.

The decision, made on Monday, anticipates the MotoGP race returning to India in March next year, when the weather will be cooler in Delhi NCR.

There were discussions about pushing this season’s race to November and returning to India in March, but it was deemed unfeasible to hold two races within four months.

The provisional calendar for 2025 will be released in June-July.

The Indian GP was previously in the news due to reports of a delay by the promoters in fulfilling the financial obligations for the 2023 race. The Uttar Pradesh government recently intervened, with its investment wing, Invest UP, becoming a partner.

Srivastava clarified, “The rights fee has been fully sorted. Change of dates and fees are not connected at all.”

The current season, originally set to have 22 races starting in Qatar on March 10 and ending in Valencia on November 17, has been shortened by two races. The Argentina leg has also been cancelled, and the Kazakhstan race has been postponed. India was supposed to be the 14th round.

Fairstreet Sports and Dorna have a seven-year contract for the India race. Last year, only 58,000 spectators attended the main race, which is half the capacity of the BIC.

Nawaz Sharif Reveals Pakistan Violated Peace Agreement With India in 1999

On Tuesday, Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif admitted that Islamabad had “violated” an agreement with India in 1999, referring to the Kargil War. Sharif made these remarks during a meeting of the PML-N general council, where he was elected president of the ruling party, six years after his disqualification by the country’s Supreme Court.

“On May 28, 1998, Pakistan conducted five nuclear tests. Following this, Vajpayee Saheb visited and made an agreement with us. However, we violated that agreement…it was our fault,” Sharif said, as quoted by news agency PTI.

The agreement Sharif referred to was the “Lahore Declaration,” signed between him and then Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on February 21, 1999. This agreement aimed to foster peace and stability between the two countries. However, just a few months later, Pakistani troops intruded into the Kargil district in Jammu and Kashmir, leading to the Kargil War.

During the PML-N general council meeting, Sharif also recounted how he conducted nuclear tests despite pressure from the United States and criticized former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

“President Bill Clinton had offered Pakistan USD 5 billion to refrain from conducting nuclear tests, but I refused. Had someone like (former prime minister) Imran Khan been in my position, he would have accepted Clinton’s offer,” Sharif said, on the day Pakistan marked the 26th anniversary of its first nuclear tests.

Sharif further claimed that former ISI chief Gen Zahirul Islam played a role in toppling his government in 2017 to bring Imran Khan to power.

“I ask Imran not to accuse us of being supported by the army and to admit whether Gen Islam talked about bringing the PTI into power,” Sharif said, adding that Khan would sit at the feet of the military establishment.

Sharif also accused the then Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar of removing him from the office of Prime Minister in 2017 based on a false case.

Indian Climber Passes Away After Mount Everest Attempt

A climber from India who was rescued from Mount Everest has died in the hospital, Nepalese authorities announced on Tuesday. The 46-year-old, Banshi Lal, was rescued last week while attempting to summit the world’s highest peak. Despite being admitted to a local hospital, doctors were unable to save him. “He died at the hospital yesterday,” Rakesh Gurung of the tourism department told AFP.

This marks the eighth recorded fatality of the year on Everest, a lower figure compared to recent years as the mountaineering season nears its end. Last year was particularly deadly, with 18 fatalities recorded in 2023.

Among this year’s deceased are a British climber and two Nepali guides, who are presumed dead after a severe fall, though their bodies have yet to be located. All fatalities on Mount Everest occurred above 8,000 meters, where thin air and low oxygen levels increase the risk of altitude sickness.

Fatalities were also reported on other Nepalese peaks. A Romanian climber died while summiting Lhotse, and a French and a Nepali climber lost their lives on Makalu, the world’s fifth-highest mountain. This year, Nepal issued 900 mountain permits, including 419 for Mount Everest.

Several records were broken this year, including Nepali climber Phunjo Lama’s fastest female ascent of Mount Everest, reaching the summit in just 14 hours and 31 minutes. Typically, climbers spend several days ascending the 8,849-meter peak, with rest and acclimatization stops at various camps.

Additionally, 54-year-old Nepali climber Kami Rita Sherpa, known as “Everest Man,” made his record-breaking 30th ascent of Everest, three decades after his first summit.

Delhi Court Sends Summons to Atishi Over Defamation Case

0

On Tuesday, May 28, the Delhi Rouse Avenue Court summoned Delhi Education Minister Atishi in a defamation case filed by Delhi BJP Media head Praveen Shankar Kapoor. The case concerns Atishi’s allegations that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was attempting to poach Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs. Atishi has been summoned to appear in court on June 29.

Kapoor’s defamation complaint claims that Atishi made “false, fabricated, and manipulated statements” with the intent to damage the reputation of the BJP and its members. The complaint asserts, “By such kind of malicious/scandalous statements, you and your colleagues defame BJP and its members and try to gain political mileage by using the platform of press conferences to make such false statements, knowing fully well that all social media platforms would carry such news as you are not only an MLA but a Minister in the government of NCT of Delhi.”

Atishi had previously been served a notice by the Election Commission of India (ECI) following her claims that she was approached and bribed by a BJP leader to join the party. This occurred after the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case related to the excise policy case.

Atishi stated, “I have been told that soon there will be ED raids at our residence and then we will be taken into custody. The BJP is now targeting the next line of leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party.” She also claimed that she would be arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) if she refused to join the BJP.

The ECI notice addressed to Atishi read, “You are a minister in the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi and leader of a national party. The electors tend to believe whatever is being said from a public forum by their leaders, and in that sense, the statements made by them affect the campaign discourse… it is expected that there must be a factual foundation to the above-quoted statements made by you, and when the veracity of the statements made by you is contested, then you must be able to back your statements by a factual basis. Whereas the matter is being examined by the Commission in light of the provisions of the Model Code of Conduct and relevant electoral laws.”

The BJP has demanded a public apology for Atishi’s allegations. Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva stated, “The AAP is facing a crisis in Delhi, which is why they are making such baseless allegations out of frustration. But we will not let her get away with this.”

BJP leader RP Singh added, “I too can make such baseless allegations. I too can say that Saurabh Bharadwaj called me up and requested me to protect them from Arvind Kejriwal, who wants to put them behind bars and make Sunita Kejriwal the CM.”

Shashi Tharoor Asks PM Modi to Withdraw Case Against Payal Kapadia

0

Shashi Tharoor, the articulate Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP, responded on Tuesday to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s praise of filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s triumph at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Tharoor urged the BJP-led central government to drop the case against Kapadia and other FTII students who protested against the government’s appointment of an unqualified Chairman.

On the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Tharoor wrote, “Modi ji, if India is proud of her, should your government not immediately #WithdrawTheCases against her and fellow FTII students protesting against your government’s arbitrary appointment of an unqualified Chairman?”

PM Modi had earlier taken to X to celebrate Payal Kapadia’s achievement, marking the first Indian entry in the festival’s main competition in 30 years. She was awarded the prestigious Grand Prix for her debut feature film ‘All We Imagine as Light.’ In his May 26 post, Modi stated, “India is proud of Payal Kapadia for her historic feat of winning the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for her work ‘All We Imagine as Light’.”

He further noted, “An alumnus of FTII, her remarkable talent continues to shine on the global stage, showcasing the rich creativity of India. This prestigious accolade not only honours her exceptional skills but also inspires a new generation of Indian filmmakers.”

Payal Kapadia, the first Indian filmmaker to win the Grand Prix, studied film direction at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) from 2015 to 2018. She and other students face legal challenges following their 2015 protests against the appointment of actor-turned-politician Gajendra Chauhan as FTII president.

This protest at FTII’s Law College Road campus in Pune was one of the longest in the institute’s history, lasting 139 days. Thirty-five students, including Kapadia, boycotted classes and academic activities. Their next court hearing is on June 26 in Pune Sessions court. The students are charged with rioting and the wrongful confinement of the institute’s then-director, Prashant Pathrabe, in his office.

‘All We Imagine as Light,’ a drama film written and directed by Payal Kapadia, features Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhu Haroon in lead roles. The film was co-produced by international companies from France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Italy, as well as India.

PM Modi Believes Love Jihad Started From Jharkhand

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at a rally in Dumka, Jharkhand on Tuesday, May 28, asserted that “’Love Jihad’ started from Jharkhand,” as reported by PTI.

Accusing the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) of engaging in “communal politics,” Modi highlighted that in one district, the traditional Sunday holiday was changed to Friday. He pointed out, “Sunday is not linked to Hindus but to the Christian community. It has been a holiday for 200-300 years. Now, they are fighting with Christians also.”

At the election rally, Modi accused the JMM and Congress of rampant corruption, claiming, “Jharkhand is now known for ‘mountains of cash’ due to JMM-Congress looting.” He promised intensified action against corruption after June 4.

Modi further stated that scams were commonplace before 2014 when Congress was in power, but his administration has since curtailed such activities.

Modi also raised concerns about the declining tribal population in the Santhal Parganas region, attributing it to “infiltration.” He accused the ruling JMM-led alliance of supporting infiltrators who are allegedly seizing land and endangering women.

“A big crisis looms over Jharkhand, and that is infiltration. The Santhal Parganas is facing the challenge of infiltration. In many areas, the population of tribals is declining fast and the number of infiltrators is on the rise. The infiltrators are grabbing tribal lands. Tribal daughters are the target of infiltrators. Their security and safety are at risk. Their lives are also at risk,” he stated.

Citing incidents from 2022, Modi remarked, “Tribal daughters are being chopped into 50 pieces… Being burnt alive… Someone’s tongue was pulled out. Who are these people who are targeting tribal daughters? Why is the JMM government patronising them?”

Modi concluded by promising that the country would witness more development in the next five years than it had in the previous decade.

Netanyahu Labels Israel’s Strike in Rafha a ‘Tragic Mistake’

0

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged on Monday that a “tragic mistake” occurred in an Israeli strike on the southern Gaza city of Rafah. This strike set fire to a camp housing displaced Palestinians, resulting in at least 45 deaths, according to local officials.

The incident has intensified international criticism of Israel over its conflict with Hamas, with even its closest allies condemning the civilian casualties. Despite this, Israel maintains that it follows international law, even as it faces scrutiny from top global courts, one of which recently demanded a halt to the offensive in Rafah.

Netanyahu did not provide details about the error. Initially, the Israeli military claimed to have conducted a precise airstrike on a Hamas compound, killing two senior militants. However, as the situation unfolded, the military announced an investigation into the civilian deaths.

The attack, which occurred on Sunday night, is among the deadliest in the ongoing conflict, pushing the Palestinian death toll above 36,000, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between fighters and noncombatants.

“Despite our utmost efforts not to harm innocent civilians, last night there was a tragic mistake,” Netanyahu stated in an address to Israel’s parliament. “We are investigating the incident and will obtain a conclusion because this is our policy.”

Mohammed Abuassa, a rescuer at the scene, described the horrific conditions, saying they pulled out people in unbearable states, including children in pieces and other victims charred by the fire.

The Gaza Health Ministry and the Palestinian Red Crescent rescue service reported at least 45 deaths, including 12 women, eight children, and three older adults. Three bodies were burned beyond recognition.

In a related incident, Egypt’s military reported that one of its soldiers was killed during an exchange of fire in Rafah. Both Israel and Egypt are investigating the incident, with initial findings indicating the soldier responded to a clash between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants.

The U.N. Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting to discuss the situation in Rafah, requested by Algeria, the Arab representative on the council.

Rafah, located on the border with Egypt, has become a refuge for over a million displaced people from other parts of Gaza. However, the recent Israeli incursion has caused many to flee again, with hundreds of thousands now living in overcrowded tent camps.

Elsewhere in Rafah, the Kuwait Hospital, one of the few operational medical centers, is shutting down after a strike killed two health workers. Dr. Suhaib al-Hamas announced the staff’s relocation to a field hospital.

Netanyahu insists that Israel must destroy the remaining Hamas battalions in Rafah, following a rocket barrage launched by the militant group towards central Israel, which caused no injuries.

The Rafah strike has drawn sharp condemnation globally. The U.S. National Security Council described the images from Rafah as “heartbreaking,” while French President Emmanuel Macron called for an immediate ceasefire and respect for international law. Germany’s Foreign Office demanded a swift investigation into the circumstances of the strike.

Qatar, a key mediator for a cease-fire and the release of hostages held by Hamas, warned that the Rafah strike could hinder negotiations. Israel’s top legal official, Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, confirmed that authorities are investigating the strike and other possible violations of international law, including civilian deaths and conditions in detention facilities.

Supreme Court Declines Urgent Hearing For Arvind Kejriwal’s Bail Extension Plea

On Tuesday, May 28, the Supreme Court’s vacation bench, comprising Justices JK Maheshwari and KV Viswanathan, refused an urgent hearing for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea seeking a seven-day extension of his interim bail in connection with the Delhi Liquor Policy money laundering case.

The bench questioned Senior Advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, about why the plea was not mentioned when Justice Dipankar Datta, the judge of the main bench, was hearing the case last week.

“The matter is already heard, and the judgment is reserved,” the vacation bench stated, according to Live Law. The Supreme Court then directed that the matter be listed before the Chief Justice of India for an appropriate order.

Kejriwal, who is under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate, sought an urgent listing of his plea in the Supreme Court on Tuesday. He requested a seven-day extension of his interim bail on health grounds, citing a need for various medical tests, including a PET-CT scan, due to “sudden and unexplained weight loss along with elevated ketone levels,” which could indicate kidney issues, severe cardiac conditions, or even cancer. Kejriwal stated that he would surrender to jail authorities on June 9 instead of June 2 in his plea filed on May 26.

The Supreme Court had granted Kejriwal a 21-day interim bail on May 10 to allow him to campaign for the Lok Sabha polls, directing him to surrender on June 2, a day after the last phase of the seven-phase election concluded.

Kejriwal faces corruption and money laundering charges related to the formulation and execution of the Delhi government’s now-scrapped excise policy for 2021-22.

Rafael Nadal Gets Knocked Out From French Open 2024

In what might be his final French Open, record-holder Rafael Nadal faced an early exit from Roland Garros on Monday. World No. 4 Alexander Zverev secured a straight-set victory over Nadal in the first round at the iconic Philippe-Chatrier court. With this memorable win, Zverev became only the third player in men’s singles to defeat the 14-time French Open champion, joining Swedes Robin Soderling and Novak Djokovic in this elite group.

Zverev started strong, breaking Nadal to love in the first game and quieting the chants of “Rafa Rafa.” He hit 15 winners compared to Nadal’s five, taking the first set 6-3. Nadal, eager to make a comeback, thrilled fans with his breakpoints and celebrated his winning forehands with shouts of “Vamos.” Despite his efforts, Nadal lost a tense tie-break in the second set 7-6 (7/5).

In the third set, Zverev, the 2020 US Open runner-up, sealed his victory by winning 6-3. Nadal struggled to save four break points in the marathon 13-minute fifth game, but ultimately, a long forehand from Nadal gave Zverev the win. Zverev converted six of 18 break points against Nadal.

Nadal, who has been battling hip and abdominal injuries since January 2023, hinted that 2024 might be his final season. The 37-year-old former World No. 1, who has dominated the Grand Slam event in Paris for two decades, last won the French Open in 2022.

“I’m not 100% sure if it’s the last time but I enjoyed it. The crowd was amazing during the whole week of preparation and today. The feelings today are difficult to describe with words but it’s special to feel the love in the place I love the most. I enjoy playing a lot and traveling with the family. The body is feeling better than two months ago. Maybe in two months I say it’s enough. But it’s something I don’t feel yet,” Nadal said following his early exit.
