NEET Controversy: Education Ministry Seeks Answers From Bihar Police

0

Amid public outrage over this year’s NEET examination, the Union Education Ministry on Wednesday requested a report from the Bihar Police’s Economic Offenses Unit regarding the alleged paper leak.

The Bihar Police have been asked to provide a detailed report on alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (UG) 2024 conducted in Patna, officials informed PTI on Wednesday.

This request follows the Bihar Police’s recent recovery of post-dated cheques, suspected to have been issued to a mafia demanding over ₹30 lakh from each candidate for the alleged leaked question paper ahead of the NEET examination.

Allegations of question paper leaks and other irregularities in Bihar have led to protests in several cities and the filing of petitions in various high courts and the Supreme Court.

A senior education ministry official stated, “A detailed report on the alleged irregularities in the Patna examination has been requested from the Economic Offences Unit, Bihar Police. The government will take further action upon receiving this report.”

“The government is committed to maintaining the integrity of examinations and protecting students’ interests. Any individual or organization found involved in this matter will face the strictest action,” he added.

A massive outcry erupted after the National Testing Agency (NTA) awarded grace marks to hundreds of students in the NEET-UG 2024 exam at selected centers. Approximately 67 students reportedly topped the exam, compared to just two last year.

Following criticism from the opposition and public backlash, the Centre and the NTA informed the Supreme Court on June 13 that they had revoked the grace marks given to 1,563 candidates who took the exam for admission to MBBS and similar courses.

The candidates will have the option to either retake the test or forgo the compensatory marks awarded for the loss of time, according to the Centre.

The NEET-UG 2024 examination was conducted nationwide on May 5 across 4,750 centers. The results were announced 10 days before the scheduled date, as the paper evaluation was completed ahead of time.

Delhi Government Takes Emergency Measures As Heatwaves Continue

0

Amid a sweltering heatwave that has claimed five lives in Delhi and at least ten in Noida, Delhi Health Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bharadwaj held a meeting with the heads of all major hospitals in the capital. He instructed them to increase the number of patient beds.

In Uttar Pradesh, state authorities reported that at least 44 people have died from heatstroke since May.

Northern India is enduring the longest heatwave in its history, with the southwest monsoon’s advancement stalling despite an early onset in Kerala.

Delhi, the national capital, is also facing a severe water crisis and power outages as the city experiences record-high electricity demand.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that conditions are now favorable for further monsoon advancement, which had stalled between June 12 and 18, prolonging the wait for rains in North India, which is suffering from the extreme heat.

The Delhi Police’s beat officers and patrol teams have been instructed to help move homeless people to shelter homes if they are found on footpaths under the open sky. The Delhi Police Commissioner has directed patrol teams to call ambulances for any sick homeless individuals they encounter.

Hospitals have been told to increase beds for patients suffering from heat-related illnesses. Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj stated that the Delhi government has instructed all healthcare centers to ensure their emergency rooms remain operational 24/7.

A senior doctor must always be present in the emergency ward to handle patients affected by the prolonged heat. Additionally, all necessary medicines for treating such patients must be available in hospitals.

CDMOs are also instructed to ensure that if a patient arrives at a dispensary, they receive immediate treatment and are then transferred to the nearest hospital by ambulance. Healthcare workers must promptly respond to calls for patient admissions and ensure that patients are quickly transferred to the nearest hospitals.

All CATS Department ambulances must remain on high alert around the clock, with some stationed near the most affected areas and shelter homes.

On the second day of rescue operations, the Sikkim administration evacuated 1,225 tourists from Lachung and the surrounding areas in Mangan district. Multiple landslides and heavy rain struck the region last week, resulting in at least six fatalities according to an official statement.

The evacuation of over 1,200 tourists stranded in North Sikkim since June 12 and 13 began on June 17. The Trishakti Corps troops are significantly aiding the civil authorities in expediting relief operations. Due to numerous landslides, tourists are being transported on foot or by vehicle where roads are accessible, as reported by the PRO Defence.

On Tuesday, the Sikkim administration evacuated 1,225 tourists from Lachung and nearby areas of Mangan district. If weather conditions permit, the remaining tourists, a few hundred, will be evacuated on Wednesday. “We have evacuated 1,225 tourists from Lachung and surrounding regions and brought them to Mangan town by road today,” said Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Vishnu Lama, as reported by PTI.

In addition to the District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police (SP) Sonam Detchu Bhutia, other senior civil and police officials, BRO, NDRF, SDRF, local panchayats, and volunteers are coordinating the rescue of the stranded tourists.

The rescue operation commenced after the BRO restored connectivity between Chungthang and Mangan via the newly constructed bridge at Toong over the Teesta River.

Uddhav Thackeray Speaks Out Against Partnering With BJP

0

During the Shiv Sena’s 58th foundation day celebration at Shanmukhanand Hall in Sion on Wednesday, Uddhav Thackeray took a strong stance against the BJP and the Shinde faction of Shiv Sena. Thackeray, leading the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction, firmly stated that he would never ally with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which he accused of attempting to “finish off” his Shiv Sena. His comments dispelled rumors of a potential alliance with the BJP ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly Elections later this year.

BJP leaders had previously criticized the INDIA bloc’s performance in the Maharashtra Lok Sabha elections, suggesting that its partners were benefitting from Thackeray’s efforts. This criticism sparked speculation that the BJP, facing a poor showing in the Maharashtra elections, was considering partnering with Thackeray’s faction of Shiv Sena. Currently, the BJP is allied with the Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena in Maharashtra.

Thackeray reinforced the INDIA bloc’s position, predicting the collapse of the Narendra Modi-led government and the establishment of an INDIA bloc-led administration. He challenged Prime Minister Modi to begin campaigning for the Assembly elections immediately and to fulfill the promises made by Chandrababu Naidu’s manifesto in Andhra Pradesh.

The BJP’s inability to secure a simple majority in the Lok Sabha, winning only 240 seats, has bolstered the confidence of INDIA bloc partners. Thackeray accused the BJP of forsaking Hindutva and questioned its alliances with regional parties like the TDP and JDU.

Pune Civic Body Takes Action To Prevent Waterlogging

0

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated measures to tackle waterlogging issues in the city.

Following visits to rain-affected areas after pre-monsoon showers, the drainage department provided recommendations for improvement. Areas impacted included Yerawada, Vimannagar, Sinhagad Road, Koregaon Park, Mhalunge, Timber Market, Lohegaon, Aundh, Market Yard, Dhanori, Baner Road, JM Road, Ganeshkhind Road, Karve Road, and NDA Road.

The PMC road department has elevated drainage chambers to road level on VR Shinde Road in Bibvewadi and constructed a drainage chamber in Pulachiwadi at Deccan Gymkhana. Additionally, work has begun on connecting a stormwater line to the culvert near Commerce Zone in Yerawada.

To facilitate water flow to nearby nullahs, the road department has broken part of the footpath at Shivaji Chowk on Satara Road.

Sahebrao Dandge, superintendent engineer of the road department, stated, “Rainwater accumulates at this spot as it is a low-lying area. On Saturday, the PMC commissioner and additional commissioner visited various waterlogging spots across the city.”

NATO Chief Warns China For Supporting Russia in Ukraine War

0

NATO’s chief warned on Monday that the Western alliance must impose consequences on China for its support of Russia, and emphasized that a continuous supply of weapons to Ukraine is essential to ending the war.

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was in Washington to prepare for NATO’s 75th anniversary summit next month.

The July summit aims to convey a strong, long-term message of support for Ukraine as President Joe Biden faces a challenging reelection campaign against Donald Trump, who is skeptical of Western support for Kyiv.

Speaking before a meeting with Biden, Stoltenberg accused China of exacerbating the conflict by aiding Russia’s defense industry through significant exports, according to US officials.

President Xi Jinping “has tried to create the impression that he is taking a back seat in this conflict, to avoid sanctions and keep trade flowing,” Stoltenberg said at the Wilson Center. “But the reality is that China is fueling the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II, and at the same time, it wants to maintain good relations with the West,” he added.

“Beijing cannot have it both ways. At some point—and unless China changes course—allies need to impose a cost. There should be consequences.”

China denies sending lethal assistance to either side, unlike the United States and other Western nations. Beijing also avoided a weekend summit in Switzerland, promoted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, that reaffirmed Kyiv’s demands for Russia to withdraw from Ukrainian territory for any peace.

Russia has expressed interest in talks but insists Ukrainian forces withdraw from territories seized by Moscow.

Trump, who has previously expressed admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin, has claimed he could quickly end the war, likely by pressuring Ukraine to accept demands.

In an unstated effort to “Trump-proof” future actions, Stoltenberg aims for the Washington summit to position NATO as the leader in coordinating support for Ukraine and to establish long-term military assistance.

“The more credible our long-term support, the quicker Moscow will realize it cannot wait us out,” Stoltenberg said. “It may seem like a paradox, but the path to peace is more weapons for Ukraine.”

The US Congress approved $60 billion in new military funding for Ukraine in April, though it was delayed for months due to political disputes and opposition from some of Trump’s Republican allies.

Priyanka Gandhi All Set to Make Electoral Debut

0

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi will retain Raebareli, the long-held constituency of the Gandhi family, and vacate his Wayanad seat, where the party will field Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, announced party president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday. Both Rahul and Priyanka—who is set to make her electoral debut—assured that they will manage responsibilities in both Raebareli and Wayanad.

If Priyanka wins the by-election in Wayanad, it would mark the first time that the Nehru-Gandhi family has three members—mother, son, and daughter—as Parliamentarians. Like other family members, Priyanka has worked within the organization before her electoral debut.

The party did not specify if Rahul will become the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, but Rahul hinted at the possibility by mentioning that Kharge had “threatened” him with action if he did not accept the CWC’s resolution to be LoP. Priyanka also added that she had given her advice on the matter to him.

“Our leader Rahul Gandhi has won from two seats. By law, he must vacate one. Tomorrow is the last date to vacate. That’s why we decided that Rahul Gandhi should retain Raebareli due to its long association with his family. Raebareli has a deep connection with the Gandhis, and for generations, they have represented it. Therefore, both the people and the party feel he should keep Raebareli,” said Kharge, alongside Rahul, Priyanka, and party general secretary KC Venugopal.

“The people of Wayanad also want Rahul Gandhi to retain his seat. However, the law does not allow this. After much deliberation, we decided that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra should contest from Wayanad. Both have agreed,” Kharge added, following a meeting at his residence attended by Sonia Gandhi, Rahul, Priyanka, and Venugopal.

Rahul acknowledged that it was “not an easy” decision, as he has attachments to both places. “I have an old relationship with Raebareli. I am happy to represent it again,” he said. “I have been the Wayanad MP for the past five years. It was a fantastic experience. The people of Wayanad, across party lines, showed me love and affection. I want to thank them and will always remember them.”

Rahul, who began his political career in 2004 from Amethi, contested Wayanad in 2019 to boost the party’s prospects in Kerala. That year, he lost to Union minister Smriti Irani in Amethi but won in Wayanad.

A senior Congress strategist explained, “Rahul could not leave Raebareli for political reasons. He is the party’s face and must represent the most politically important state, UP. His presence will strengthen Congress’ ties with the Samajwadi Party.”

Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was a Raebareli MP from 1967 to 1977. Feroze Gandhi served two terms from there in 1952 and 1957. After Rahul contested Amethi, Sonia Gandhi shifted to Raebareli and was its MP from 2004 to 2024 before moving to the Rajya Sabha earlier this year.

Interestingly, in 1980, when Indira won both Raebareli and Medak, she chose Medak in Andhra Pradesh. Forty-four years later, her grandson has chosen to retain Raebareli and vacate his southern India seat.

Priyanka, who will contest from Wayanad in an upcoming by-poll, expressed confidence. “I am very happy. I will work hard to make everyone happy and help him in Raebareli. I have an old connection with Raebareli and have worked in both Amethi and Raebareli. I will support my brother in Raebareli,” she said.

Rahul expressed confidence in her victory and her ability to represent Wayanad well. He also mentioned that he will frequently visit Wayanad, ensuring both constituencies have two active Members of Parliament.

Prince William Warned Harry About Meghan Markle

0

Prince William was right to “warn” Harry about rushing into his relationship with Meghan Markle, according to Royal Family expert Jennie Bond. She believes Meghan needed more time to determine if she could handle Royal life, contrasting their quick relationship with William and Kate’s slower one.

“Kate had ten years to observe the demands and scrutiny of Royal life. This lengthy courtship allowed her to assess whether she could manage it, and William could see that too,” Bond said on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive show.

“This is why William was correct to guide or warn Harry, ‘Are you sure you’re not going a bit fast in this relationship with Meghan?’ It offended Harry to be questioned like that, but I think it came from a good place,” she added.

Bond previously described Harry as a “great asset” to the palace but expressed doubt about his return to the Royal Family. She emphasized that Harry brought a natural common touch and relatability to the Royals but doesn’t believe he will return.

“They would have been a great asset had he stayed, but I don’t think he will return. If I did pray, I would pray that he has a happy life now with all that he wanted,” she said.

Bond noted that the Duke of Sussex is enjoying the “domestic bliss” he lacked as a child.

“He now has the freedom he craved, the wife he loves, and the children he adores—the model of domestic bliss he didn’t have in his own adolescence. I wish him all the best,” she added.

Harry and Meghan stepped down from their roles as working royals in 2020, just two years after their wedding at Windsor Castle. They now reside in Montecito with their two children, Archie and Lilibet.

IndiGo Flight Delayed Due to High Temperatures

0

An IndiGo flight from Delhi to Bagdogra was delayed for about four hours at Delhi airport due to a technical issue caused by high ground temperatures.

IndiGo flight 6E 2521 was scheduled to depart from Indira Gandhi International Airport at 2:10 pm and arrive at Bagdogra Airport near Siliguri, West Bengal, at 4:10 pm.

The aircraft encountered the technical snag while parked on the tarmac, affecting the refueling process.

“Delhi and Bagdogra flights were delayed due to high ground temperatures impeding operations. IndiGo prioritizes passenger safety above all else and is taking steps to enable a prompt departure. Passengers are being provided with regular updates, and we regret the inconvenience caused due to factors beyond the airline’s control,” IndiGo stated.

The airline operates Airbus A20N, A32N, and A21N aircraft on the Delhi-Bagdogra route.

On June 9, a major accident was averted at Mumbai airport when an Air India aircraft took off while an IndiGo aircraft landed on the same runway within a minute. The incident is being investigated by the aviation watchdog DGCA and the two airlines.

According to PTI, the two A320 aircraft had around 300 passengers on board.

Both airlines stated that they were cleared for landing and takeoff by Air Traffic Control (ATC).

“On June 8, IndiGo flight 6E 6053 from Indore was given landing clearance by ATC at Mumbai Airport. The pilot in command continued the approach and landing and followed ATC instructions,” IndiGo said in a statement.
