Kerela Assembly Seeks to Change the State’s Name

0

The Kerala Assembly unanimously passed a second resolution on Monday, requesting the Centre to officially change the state’s name to ‘Keralam’. This comes nearly a year after a similar resolution was unanimously passed and subsequently returned by the Centre for corrections.

The resolution will be sent to the Union government for approval. In August last year, the Union Home Ministry reviewed the previous resolution and suggested some technical changes after the Kerala government sought “immediate steps” to change the state’s name.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan proposed the resolution, asking the union government to change the state’s name in all the languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

While presenting the resolution, Vijayan noted that the state has traditionally been called ‘Keralam’ in Malayalam, and the demand for a united Kerala for Malayalam speakers has been strong since the national freedom struggle.

“But the name of our state is written as Kerala in the First Schedule of the Constitution. This Assembly requests the Centre to take immediate steps to amend it to ‘Keralam’ under Article 3 of the Constitution and have it renamed as ‘Keralam’ in all the languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution,” PTI quoted Vijayan as saying.

Members of both the ruling LDF and the opposition UDF supported the resolution. UDF legislator N Shamsudeen suggested some changes, but the government rejected them. Speaker A N Shamseer announced that the assembly then unanimously adopted the resolution.

Since India’s independence, over a hundred cities and several states have changed their names. Uttaranchal became Uttarakhand in 2007, honouring the Uttarakhand Andolan movement that led to the state’s separation from Uttar Pradesh in 2000. Orissa was renamed Odisha in 2011, following the Orissa (Alteration of Name) Act. In 2006, the Union Territory of Pondicherry became Puducherry. Some capital cities that have undergone name changes include Bombay, now Mumbai, and Madras, now Chennai.

West Bengal has also been seeking a name change to Bangla, which would move it up in the alphabetical listing of Indian states.

India All Set to Auction ₹96,318 crore Telecom Spectrum Soon

0

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will commence the auction of ₹96,317.65 crore worth of spectrum on Tuesday.

On February 8, the Union Cabinet approved the auction of 10,523.15 megahertz (MHz) of spectrum across various bands at a reserve price of ₹96,317.65 crore, according to Business Standard.

All unsold spectrum from the previous sale will be available for bidding again, including airwaves in the 800, 900, 1800, 2100, 2300, 2500, 3300 MHz, and 26 GHz bands, covering a substantial portion of voice and data spectrum.

Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea have collectively deposited ₹4,350 crore for the bidding, as announced by the DoT.

This auction is significantly smaller—five times less—than the last 5G spectrum auction in 2022, Business Standard reported.

Companies earn points based on the earnest money deposit (EMD) they have made, which allows them to bid for the number of circles and the amount of spectrum they desire. Higher points indicate a greater capability to place bids. Telcos can bid for spectrum worth up to 12 times their EMD. Due to much lower demand for spectrum and a cautious approach by market leader Reliance Jio, the auctions are expected to be more subdued, according to a recent note by IIFL Securities.

Although all unsold spectrum from the last sale is up for bidding again, the amount of spectrum available has decreased by more than seven times since 2022, Business Standard noted.

Jio (108 million) and Airtel (72 million) have seen their 5G penetration rise to about 20-22% of their subscriber bases.

Airtel plans to add at least 25,000 5G sites in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, and West Bengal to enhance rural coverage, for which it has sufficient spectrum, as reported by Mint.

Vodafone Idea has decided not to renew some of its spectrum in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh West, where renewals for 12 MHz in the 1800 MHz and 900 MHz bands were due. This decision will reduce its renewal expenditure from ₹1,500 crore to ₹200 crore for just the 900 MHz band, according to Mint.

While the government had expected to generate about ₹10,000 crore from the sale, various brokerage reports leading up to the auction on June 25 suggest that the auctions may bring in anywhere between ₹4,000 crore and ₹16,600 crore.

Karan Johar All Set to Return with Koffee With Karan Season 9

0

Karan Johar’s chat show Koffee with Karan remains a fan favorite, and the filmmaker has confirmed the return of the show with a fresh new season. In a recent interview, he announced that the show will be back with more fun and candid conversations in 2025.

The eighth season of the chat show premiered last year, featuring actors Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone as the first guests.

In an interview with Sucharita Tyagi, Karan Johar was asked about his plans for the next season. He responded that they plan to take a year off and return in 2025. He also mentioned his intention to revamp the show’s format, especially considering feedback that last year’s rapid fire round was the most “boring” ever.

“I was like, ‘why am I even doing this?’ You’re not giving me questions. Should we just drop the rapid fire, and I will take the hamper because no one really deserves to win it. Now, I am like let’s change the world of Koffee with Karan with the ninth season. And it will be back with all the fun and the chattiness,” he shared.

Karan also noted that sometimes celebrities are too scared to open up, unlike in the past when guests like Mahesh Bhatt were more forthcoming. “With the way Bhatt sahab is, he will still give me such answers. But I think I would get into trouble. Like, you called him, and you got these answers. Why didn’t you edit?” Karan joked.

Last year, Koffee With Karan season 8 started with Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone as the first guests on the couch. Other notable guests included Alia Bhatt and Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Sharmila Tagore, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, Rani Mukerji and Kajol, Sara Ali Khan and Ananya Panday, and Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor.

Delhi HC All Set to Give Verdict on ED’s Plea Challenging Bail Granted to Arvind Kejriwal

The Delhi High Court is set to pass an order tomorrow, June 25, regarding the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) plea challenging the bail granted to Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal in the money laundering case related to the now-scrapped Delhi excise scam.

The order is scheduled to be pronounced at 2:30 p.m.

On Monday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) submitted written arguments to the Delhi High Court, opposing any relief for Arvind Kejriwal in the Excise Policy money laundering case.

The ED has argued that the trial court’s order was “perverse,” “one-sided,” and “wrong-sided,” with findings based on irrelevant facts. The agency is seeking to overturn the trial court’s decision, contending that the vacation judge made erroneous findings in nearly every paragraph of the order and neglected crucial prosecution evidence.

According to the ED, the judge failed to review new evidence gathered after 2023, including statements from 13 Angariyas, Goa AAP workers, and AAP office bearers, which the ED considers significant in the case against Kejriwal.

Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP national convenor, was arrested on March 21 by the ED. He could have been released from Tihar jail had the high court not granted interim relief to the central anti-money laundering agency.

The trial court granted bail to Kejriwal on June 20, ordering his release on a personal bond of ₹1 lakh and imposing conditions that he must not hamper the investigation or influence witnesses.

The excise policy was scrapped in 2022 after the Delhi lieutenant governor ordered a CBI probe into alleged irregularities and corruption in its formulation and execution.

Ayodhya Ram Mandir Roof Leaking Within 6 Months

0

The Ayodhya Ram Mandir’s roof is reportedly leaking with the arrival of the monsoon season in 2024. The temple’s chief priest, Acharya Satyendra Das, expressed surprise at the incident, stating, “So many engineers are here, and the Pran Pratishtha was held on January 22, but water is leaking from the roof. Nobody would’ve thought this.”

According to news reports, the chief priest mentioned that the temple’s roof started leaking immediately after the first rains, particularly near the location of the Ram Lalla idol. He pointed out that the newly constructed temple lacks proper drainage, leading to water leakage and accumulation near the idol.

Acharya Das also discussed the ongoing construction of the Ram Mandir, expressing skepticism about meeting the July 2025 completion deadline, though he acknowledged claims to the contrary. He called for an investigation and action, highlighting concerns over the construction process.

The chief priest’s remarks emphasize doubts about the July 2025 construction deadline and the need for scrutiny regarding the recent water leakage issues near the Ram Lalla idol. He warned that if the issue is not promptly addressed, it could complicate prayer rituals, especially with the anticipated increase in rainfall.

The Pran Pratishtha ceremony of Ram Lalla in the Ayodhya Ram Mandir was held on January 22 this year, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attended by senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders such as Amit Shah, Yogi Adityanath, and JP Nadda.

Notably, the opposition managed to take the BJP’s seat in Ayodhya City, marking a symbolic loss for Modi’s party after the prime minister inaugurated the controversial grand Hindu temple on the site of a demolished mosque in January.

Centre Assures Students After UGC-NET 2024 Gets Cancelled

0

The day after announcing the cancellation of the UGC-NET 2024 examination, the Centre reassured students that their best interests would be prioritized regarding the National Eligibility Test. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also announced that a CBI investigation had been initiated following reports of the exam being compromised.

Speaking on the cancellation, Dharmendra Pradhan told ANI, “I want to assure the students, this is your government. Have faith; the interests of students are paramount to us. Yesterday evening, IC4 informed us that there was a possibility the UGC-NET exam was compromised. After our own research confirmed this, we decided to cancel the exam and initiate a CBI inquiry.”

During a Thursday press conference, the education minister addressed the cancellation, stating, “We take responsibility and must rectify the system.” He assured students that the government would not tolerate any irregularities or malpractice.

Pradhan revealed that the UGC-NET examination was canceled because the paper had been leaked on the Darknet. The National Testing Agency had previously stated the cancellation was due to the “integrity of the examination being compromised.”

The education minister also announced that the Centre would form a high-level committee to review the functioning of the NTA amid the cancellation of the UGC-NET and ongoing issues with the NEET-UG medical entrance exam.

“The government will form a high-level committee to recommend improvements for the NTA, focusing on its structure, functioning, examination processes, transparency, and data security protocols. Our commitment is to zero-error testing,” Pradhan said at the press conference.

Regarding the NEET issue, Pradhan stated, “We are in contact with the Bihar government concerning the NEET exam. We are receiving information from Patna, and the police are investigating. A detailed report will be submitted, and strict action will be taken against those found guilty.”

Following reports of the ‘paper leak’ from Patna, the minister reiterated, “We are in contact with the Bihar government and receiving information from Patna. Police are investigating, and a detailed report will be provided. Credible information will lead to strict action against the guilty.”

Protests erupted nationwide after the UGC-NET 2024 examination was canceled by the Education Ministry on Wednesday. Approximately 50 students from various universities were detained following nationwide protests by student organizations such as SFI, AISA, and NSUI against the Education Ministry.

Over 1,000 Hajj Pilgrims Dead Due to Harsh Weather

0

As sweltering heat continues to grip parts of Asia, an AFP tally indicates that over 1,000 people have died during this year’s hajj in Saudi Arabia. The report revealed that more than half of the deceased were unregistered worshippers who undertook the pilgrimage in extreme heat.

New deaths reported on Thursday included 58 from Egypt. An Arab diplomat provided a breakdown showing that out of 658 total deaths from Egypt, 630 were unregistered.

Approximately 10 countries have reported a total of 1,081 deaths during the annual pilgrimage, which is one of the five pillars of Islam and must be completed by all Muslims with the means at least once. These figures were obtained through official statements or from diplomats handling their countries’ responses, according to AFP.

The timing of the hajj is determined by the lunar Islamic calendar, and this year it coincided once again with the sweltering summer in Saudi Arabia. Earlier this week, weather agencies recorded temperatures exceeding 51 degrees Celsius at the Grand Mosque in Mecca.

A Saudi study published last month indicated that temperatures in the area are increasing by 0.4 degrees Celsius each decade.

Despite Saudi authorities clearing hundreds of thousands of unregistered pilgrims for hajj this year, many still participated without proper permits. Unregistered pilgrims did not have access to air-conditioned areas and other facilities, making them particularly vulnerable to the heatwave.

“People were tired after being chased by security forces before Arafat day. They were exhausted,” one Arab diplomat told AFP on Thursday, referring to the day-long outdoor prayers on Saturday that marked the climax of the hajj.

The primary cause of death for the majority of the pilgrims was the extreme heat, which led to complications such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular issues, and other health problems.

In addition to Egypt, fatalities have been confirmed by Malaysia, Pakistan, India, Jordan, Indonesia, Iran, Senegal, Tunisia, and Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region, although in many cases, authorities have not specified the causes of death.

Seoul Slams Russian-North Korea Deal and Might Reconsider Ukraine Policy

0

South Korea’s Presidential office condemned a recent agreement between Russia and North Korea that pledged mutual defense assistance in the event of war, and indicated it may reconsider its policy of limiting support to Ukraine to non-lethal supplies.

A senior presidential official made these comments on Thursday, following a statement from the office condemning the agreement reached by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during their summit in Pyongyang on Wednesday. The office stated that the agreement threatens South Korea’s security and could negatively impact Seoul’s relations with Moscow.

The anonymous official, speaking during a background briefing per office rules, said that Seoul will reconsider providing arms to Ukraine to help counter Russia’s invasion.

South Korea, a growing arms exporter with a well-equipped military backed by the United States, has provided humanitarian aid and other support to Ukraine while joining U.S.-led economic sanctions against Moscow. However, it has not directly supplied arms to Ukraine, citing a longstanding policy of not providing weapons to countries actively engaged in conflict.

The new agreement between Russia and North Korea, announced by North Korean state media on Thursday, requires both countries to provide immediate military assistance in the event of war using all available means.

Both Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin described the deal as a significant upgrade of bilateral relations, encompassing security, trade, investment, cultural, and humanitarian ties. Observers noted that this could mark the strongest connection between Moscow and Pyongyang since the end of the Cold War.

The North’s official Korean Central News Agency reported that the comprehensive strategic partnership agreement includes Article 4, which states that if one country is invaded and enters a state of war, the other must provide “military and other assistance” using all means at its disposal. This must be in accordance with both countries’ laws and Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, which recognizes the right to self-defense for U.N. member states.

The summit between Kim and Putin raised concerns among the U.S. and its allies about a potential arms deal where Pyongyang would supply Moscow with munitions for its war in Ukraine in exchange for economic assistance and technology transfers that could enhance North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missile programs.

Following the summit, Kim described the two countries’ relationship as a “fiery friendship” and the deal as their “strongest-ever treaty,” likening it to an alliance. Putin called it a “breakthrough document” that reflects a shared desire to elevate relations.

North Korea and the former Soviet Union had a 1961 treaty requiring Moscow’s military intervention if the North was attacked. This treaty was replaced in 2000 by a weaker agreement after the USSR collapsed.

South Korean officials said they were still analyzing the summit’s outcomes, including Russia’s potential response if North Korea is attacked. Analysts were divided on whether the agreement mandates Russia’s automatic military intervention on behalf of North Korea or if it was worded to avoid such a commitment. The inclusion of the U.N. Charter in the article was also unclear.

“We are currently reviewing the specifics of the treaty signed between Russia and North Korea during President Putin’s visit to North Korea. We will announce our government’s position after we are done,” Lim Soosuk, South Korea’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said during a briefing.

Lim also expressed regret that Moscow and Pyongyang signed the agreement while openly discussing military and technology cooperation, which would violate U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Vande Bharat Passenger Claims Finding Cockroach in Meal

0

Vidit Varshney, a user on X, shared a picture of a dead cockroach found in the food served to passengers on the Vande Bharat Express. He mentioned that the incident involved his uncle and aunt, who were traveling from Bhopal to Agra on June 18. Varshney urged the authorities to take “strict action” against the vendor. The Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC) responded to his post, “apologizing” for the inconvenience and stating that a “suitable” penalty had been imposed on the service providers.

“Today, on 18-06-24, my uncle and aunt were traveling from Bhopal to Agra on Vande Bharat. They got a ‘cockroach’ in their food from IRCTC. Please take strict action against the vendor and make sure this does not happen again,” wrote Vidit Varshney on X, sharing a picture of the food with a dead cockroach in it.

RailwaySeva, the official support handle on X for train passengers, requested Varshney to share his “PNR number and mobile number” and expressed regret for the experience his aunt and uncle endured.

Two days later, the official IRCTC handle responded. They wrote, “Sir, we apologize for your travel experience. The matter has been viewed seriously, and a suitable penalty has been imposed on the concerned service provider. We have also intensified the production and logistics monitoring.”

“If people just see the condition of the canteen where food is prepared, most would never order. I prefer to bring home-cooked meals whenever possible,” expressed Nitish Kumar, another X user.

Another user added, “Whenever a person raises a complaint, the railway asks for details only and after that, no action is taken. Not only is the food quality poor, but there is also overcharging in the pantry. Authorities are well aware of this but do not act due to some ‘other reason’.”

“I don’t eat railway food. Take your homemade food with you,” said yet another user, Feroz Ahmad.

“Thoughts are with those who ate the rest of the food from this batch,” wrote a fourth user.

Home Ministry Refuses To Renew Visa of French Journalist

0

French journalist Sebastien Farcis claimed on Thursday that he had to leave India because the Ministry of Home Affairs refused to renew his journalist permit, ending his 13-year tenure as a correspondent in the country.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Farcis wrote, “After 13 years working as a correspondent in India, the authorities have denied me a permit to work as a journalist. I have thus been forced to leave the country.”

“On 17th June, I was forced to leave India, a country where I had lived and worked as a journalist for 13 years, as a South Asia correspondent for Radio France Internationale, Radio France, Liberation and the Swiss and Belgian public radios,” he stated on the microblogging site.

Farcis mentioned that on March 7, the Ministry of Home Affairs denied renewing his journalist permit without providing a reason, despite his formal requests. He described this as “incomprehensible censorship.”

Having worked as a journalist in India since 2011, Farcis said he had always obtained the necessary visas and accreditations. “I have respected the regulations imposed in India for foreign journalists and never worked in restricted or protected areas without a permit. On several occasions, the MHA even granted me permits to report from border areas.”

“This work ban comes as a big shock: it was communicated to me on the eve of the Indian general elections, the largest democratic elections in the world, which I was hence forbidden to cover. This appeared to me as an incomprehensible censorship,” his statement read. Farcis further stated that his family was also pushed out of India “without explanation” and “uprooted overnight” for no apparent reason. “I am married to an Indian woman, and I have the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status. I am therefore deeply attached to India, which has become my second homeland,” he said.

He added that he is the second French journalist, after Vanessa Dougnac, forced to leave India under similar conditions in the past four months. Additionally, five OCI foreign correspondents have been banned from working as journalists in less than two years.
