Yogi Adityanath Praises Rule of Law; Made UP Second-Largest Economy in the Country

0

On Thursday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that the U.P. Police had not only established a new identity within the country but also played a crucial role in reshaping the state’s image over the past seven years.

“Adherence to the rule of law has made the police a symbol of respect and trust, ushering in an era of development and employment in the state by opening up new possibilities for investment and business,” said Yogi Adityanath.

He made these remarks while flagging off the upgraded Police Response Vehicles (PRVs) in the second phase of UP-112, the state integrated emergency response centre, from his official residence in Lucknow. The Uttar Pradesh chief minister also distributed air-conditioned helmets to a team from the Kanpur Police Commissionerate, led by Police Commissioner Akhil Kumar.

“With the establishment of the rule of law in the state, U.P. has risen to become the second-largest economy in the country and is now rapidly positioning itself to become the nation’s largest economy,” Yogi Adityanath added.

“The state bears the responsibility for maintaining security, and our police force excels in this duty,” Yogi Adityanath said. “The rule of law is fundamental to good governance, and ensuring a secure and safe environment in the state is very important,” he added.

He also mentioned that the demand for modernizing the police force to meet contemporary needs had been longstanding.

Efforts have been made to reduce the response time of UP-112 and increase the number of PRV-112 vehicles over the past seven years, he said. Two-wheelers have been added alongside four-wheelers, enabling PRVs to reach streets and localities to better serve the public, he added.

The government has initiated an ambitious three-year program to add 6,278 new four-wheelers and two-wheelers to the fleet. This year alone, 1,778 vehicles will be integrated into the fleet, he said.

“During the Covid-19 lockdown, UP Police’s PRV 112 garnered significant attention. People witnessed the dedication of the police force, with two-wheelers accessing areas where four-wheelers couldn’t reach,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier outlined a new vision for the directors general of police across the country, emphasizing changes in the law and the concept of smart policing, the chief minister said. He noted that the PM advocated being strict yet sensitive, modern and mobile, alert and accountable, reliable and responsive, techno-savvy and trend-oriented.

The UP Police have endeavored to fully implement these principles, he said.

The chief minister stated that neglecting modernization efforts, especially considering societal needs, would cause the police force to lag. “The most severe consequence of this would be jeopardizing the safety of the common man,” he remarked.

Bihar Has Cancelled ₹800 crore tenders Awarded During RJD Minister’s Tenure

0

The Nitish Kumar-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in Bihar announced on Wednesday that it is canceling 350 tenders awarded by the Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED) during the period when Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) was allied with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary stated that the canceled tenders, worth ₹826 crore, were issued while RJD lawmaker Lalit Kumar Yadav served as the state’s PHED minister in the Nitish Kumar-led Grand Alliance government between August 2022 and January 2024. These contracts were for the supply of drinking water in rural areas.

Chaudhary, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, announced upon his appointment as Deputy Chief Minister that the government would review the projects undertaken by the Grand Alliance in departments overseen by the RJD and Congress.

Officials noted that 1,100 contracts worth ₹4,600 crore were signed during Yadav’s tenure as PHED minister. A senior official stated that the 350 contracts related to rural water supply were scrapped by current PHED minister Niraj Kumar Bablu following an inquiry that indicated due process was not followed. Most of these projects involved the installation of hand pumps and mini water supply systems in rural areas.

The Deputy Chief Minister also warned that officials who did not adhere to the stipulated norms would face consequences.

Of the 350 canceled projects, the largest number (106) were in Banka district, followed by Jamui (73), Lakhisarai (20), Aurangabad (18), and Ara (11).

RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwary criticized the cancellation of the contracts, describing it as a vindictive move by the Nitish Kumar-led government against RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav. He claimed that leaders of the JD(U) and BJP were intimidated by Yadav’s growing popularity and that the Grand Alliance government had implemented many people-friendly initiatives that created employment for about 7-8 lakh youths. Tiwary added that the RJD would not be intimidated by such tactics.

In February, Bihar’s cabinet secretariat instructed officials to review the activities of the health, road construction, urban development, and rural works departments, which were headed by RJD ministers during the Grand Alliance government.

Ariana Grande Gets Slammed For Saying She Wanted to Have Dinner with Jeffrey Dahmer

0

Ariana Grande is facing criticism for discussing her “infatuation” with serial killers and expressing that her dream dinner guest would be Jeffrey Dahmer. She made these comments on the Podcrushed podcast with hosts Penn Badgley, Sophie Ansari, and Nava Kavelin.

“I was infatuated with serial killers when I was younger,” Grande said. “It was between my time on [Sam & Cat] and my pop career. I was with a younger group and their parents, and someone asked, ‘If you could have dinner with anyone living or dead, who would it be?’”

Grande recounted her response: “‘Oh, you’re so cute,’ I said, then asked the parents if I could give an honest answer. They said, ‘Sure, what’s the answer?’ and I replied, ‘I mean, Jeffrey Dahmer is pretty fascinating.’”

She even mentioned that she would still like to meet Dahmer, who was killed in prison in 1994 after being convicted of murdering 17 boys and men from 1978 to 1991, involving necrophilia and cannibalism.

“I think I would have loved to have met him,” Grande said. “Maybe with a third party present. But I have questions.”

Many are outraged by her comments. On social media, one user commented, “I don’t think she knows what she’s doing.” Another noted, “This is a surprisingly common stance. All these guys were getting fanmail in prison.” Others criticized her, saying, “I swear they want to get kidnapped…” and “She sounds like most other people who are serial killer obsessed,” while another added, “I don’t think she wants to be famous anymore.”

On Reddit, users also condemned Grande’s remarks. One user wrote, “This is so vile… I have a great interest in crime cases, but the LAST thing I’d want to do is have dinner with a serial killer. Jeffrey Dahmer was a pedophile who murdered innocent people, mainly people of color because he knew police wouldn’t take their disappearances seriously. Joking about wanting to have dinner with him is sick and horribly offensive to the victims’ families, who are still alive and affected by the tragedy. Let’s stop glorifying these psychos and pretending they are fascinating people – they’re not, and if you met them in real life, you would quickly realize why.” Another user commented, “That’s such a disgusting thing to say,” while another added, “Not the funny/cute/edgy anecdote you think it is, Ariana.”

Centre Denies Clean Chit For Byju’s Case

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) clarified that the proceedings initiated against edtech company Byju’s under the companies law are “still ongoing,” and a final conclusion cannot be drawn at this stage.

This statement followed media reports suggesting that a year-long probe by the ministry found no evidence of financial misconduct, such as fund diversion or financial manipulation, at Byju’s.

“There have been recent reports claiming that Byju’s has been cleared of financial fraud in an ongoing investigation by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA),” the statement read, adding that the investigation is still ongoing, and definitive statements on the matter are premature.

The reports indicated that the investigation did reveal governance shortcomings that contributed to the startup’s increasing losses.

“It is categorically clarified that such reports are factually incorrect and misleading. The proceedings initiated by MCA under the Companies Act, 2013, are still ongoing, and no final conclusion should be drawn in this matter at this stage,” the MCA added.

Last year, the ministry began inspecting Byju’s books due to various concerns, including delays in finalizing financial statements and the resignation of an auditor.

Byju’s, once a celebrated edtech startup, reached great heights before encountering several challenges. The return of students to physical classrooms after the pandemic and the acquisition of Aakash strained Byju’s finances. Over the past year, the company faced additional setbacks: its auditor resigned, lenders initiated bankruptcy proceedings against a holding company, and a US lawsuit contested loan terms and repayment conditions.

Raveendran Byju, founder of Think & Learn, the company behind the Byju’s brand, attributed delays in the company’s revival to certain foreign investors. These delays included restructuring the board, postponing financial results, and resolving a liquidity crisis, reportedly hindered by opposition to a USD 200 million rights issue.

US Supreme Court Decides to Stand With Biden in GOP-Led Social Media Case

0

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court supported the Biden administration in a conflict with Republican-led states over the extent of federal authority in addressing controversial social media posts on subjects like COVID-19 and election security.

In a 6-3 decision, the justices nullified lower-court rulings that favored Louisiana, Missouri, and other parties. These parties claimed that Democratic administration officials pressured social media platforms to unlawfully suppress conservative viewpoints.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett, writing for the court, stated that the states and other parties lacked the legal right, or standing, to sue. Justices Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Clarence Thomas dissented.

This decision is not expected to impact regular social media users or their posts.

This case is one of several before the court this term affecting social media companies in the context of free speech. In February, the court heard arguments about Republican-enacted laws in Florida and Texas that prevent large social media companies from removing posts based on their expressed views. In March, the court set standards for when public officials can block their social media followers.

Both the state law cases and the one decided Wednesday revolve around the theme of complaints that platforms are censoring conservative viewpoints.

The states argued that officials from the White House, the surgeon general, the FBI, and the U.S. cybersecurity agency exerted “unrelenting pressure” to force changes in online content on social media platforms.

During arguments in March, the justices seemed broadly skeptical of these claims and several expressed concern that common interactions between government officials and the platforms might be affected by a ruling in favor of the states.

The Biden administration highlighted these concerns, noting that a ruling for the states could hinder the government’s ability to communicate with social media companies about antisemitic and anti-Muslim posts, as well as national security, public health, and election integrity issues.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the court made the right decision as it allows the Biden Administration to continue its crucial work with technology companies to protect the safety and security of Americans.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill called the decision “unfortunate and disappointing,” arguing that it allows the federal government to coerce tech platforms into censoring speech protected by the First Amendment. She criticized the majority for dismissing what she called the worst government coercion scheme in history.

The justices did not address the substance of the states’ claims or the administration’s response in their decision.

“We begin — and end — with standing,” Barrett wrote. “At this stage, neither the individual nor the state plaintiffs have established standing to seek an injunction against any defendant. We therefore lack jurisdiction to reach the merits of the dispute.”

In dissent, Alito argued that the states had sufficiently demonstrated their right to sue, stating that high-ranking government officials had placed unrelenting pressure on Facebook to suppress free speech.

Some free speech advocates praised the decision but were disappointed by the lack of guidance from the court. Alex Abdo, litigation director of the Knight First Amendment Institute, emphasized the importance of the Supreme Court clarifying the line between permissible attempts to persuade and impermissible attempts to coerce, especially in the months leading up to an election.

Reports Suggest Pakistan’s New Anti-Terror Efforts Focus on Protecting Chinese Projects

0

China’s reluctance to invest in new projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is primarily driven by concerns about the safety of its citizens and assets in Pakistan.

In response, the Pakistani government has recently approved a revitalized national counter-terrorism campaign, ‘Operation Azm-e-Istehkam’. According to a recent editorial in Dawn, this move highlights Pakistan’s acknowledgment of the need to address China’s security concerns, particularly at a time when attracting foreign investment is crucial for its economic development.

At a press conference in Lahore, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif stated that the primary focus of ‘Azm-e-Istehkam’ operations will be in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and Balochistan. He added that a detailed plan outlining the framework for these operations will be announced soon. Chinese citizens, workers, and projects have been targets of violence or security threats within Pakistan, raising serious concerns about their safety and security under CPEC projects.

Such incidents have significant implications for the bilateral relations between China and Pakistan, as well as for regional stability and economic cooperation.

However, Pakistan’s military operations often face allegations of human rights violations, including excessive use of force, arbitrary arrests, disappearances, and mistreatment of civilians in conflict zones like Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and insurgency-affected areas. These allegations, frequently reported by human rights organizations and international observers, raise concerns about the protection of civil liberties and adherence to international humanitarian law.

Such reports can strain Pakistan’s relations with the international community and prompt calls for accountability and reforms within its military and security forces.

Princess Anne Suffers Memory Loss Due to Head Injuries

0

Reports have indicated that Princess Anne has experienced memory loss following head injuries sustained in a horse-related incident over the weekend. On Monday, June 24, Anne spent her second night in the hospital, where doctors conducted tests after diagnosing her with a concussion.

According to the Telegraph, the memory loss is directly linked to the incident but is expected to be temporary.

When asked about Anne’s condition, her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, told reporters, “She’s fine. Slow but sure,” as seen in a video shared on X. Laurence was also reported to have brought snacks from home for Anne.

Princess Anne, King Charles’ only sister, was reportedly injured by a horse while walking on the grounds of her Gatcombe Park estate on Sunday evening, June 23. At the time of the incident, Laurence, Anne’s daughter Zara Tindall, and son Peter Phillips were present on the estate.

Anne has cancelled all her official duties for the week, including a state visit and a trip to Canada. “On doctors’ advice, Her Royal Highness’s engagements for the week ahead will be postponed. Her Royal Highness sends her apologies to any who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result,” her spokesperson said, according to the New York Post.

Anne is expected to remain in the hospital for the rest of the week as she recovers. Buckingham Palace stated that Anne “remains in Southmead Hospital as a precautionary measure for observation” and is anticipated to “make a full and swift recovery.” It was also reported that King Charles and the royal family have been informed of Anne’s condition.

AAP Alleges Centre and CBI is Conspiring to Arrest Kejriwal

On Tuesday, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accused the BJP-led Union government and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of plotting to file a false case against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal ahead of an upcoming court hearing. The Supreme Court is set to hear Kejriwal’s plea on June 26, challenging the Delhi High Court’s interim stay on his bail in a money laundering case.

AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh alleged that the Centre’s actions are motivated by the possibility that the Supreme Court might grant Kejriwal bail, as he is currently held in Tihar Jail regarding the excise policy case.

“Sources have informed me that the Centre is conspiring to register a fake CBI case against the Delhi CM and have him arrested by the CBI, especially now when there’s a strong chance that he will be granted bail by the Supreme Court,” Singh said in a video shared by AAP on X. He added, “The entire nation can see this and is standing in solidarity with Arvind Kejriwal.”

These allegations came just hours after the Delhi High Court halted Kejriwal’s release in the excise policy case by staying a trial court’s order that had granted him bail. Justice Sudhir Kumar Jain criticized the trial court for not properly considering the “voluminous material” presented by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), calling the court’s dismissal of this evidence “totally unjustified.” Kejriwal was arrested by the ED in March in connection with the Delhi excise policy case. The Supreme Court had granted him interim bail on May 10 for election campaigning, requiring him to surrender by June 2. Subsequently, on June 20, the trial court granted him regular bail, which the High Court stayed on June 21, even before the bail order was officially issued.

Pune Porsche Case: Bombay HC Orders Immediate Release of Accused Teen

Pune Porsche Car Accident: Bombay High Court Orders Release of 17-Year-Old

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday ordered the immediate release of a 17-year-old boy from an observation home. The teen was involved in a recent Porsche car accident in Pune, where he was accused of driving the car illegally and in an inebriated state, resulting in a collision with a two-wheeler that killed two techies from Madhya Pradesh.

Justices Bharati Dangre and Manjusha Deshpande of the Bombay High Court quashed the Juvenile Justice Board’s (JJB) orders that had remanded the minor to the observation home.

“We allow the petition and order his release. The Child in Conflict with Law (CCL) shall be in the care and custody of the petitioner (paternal aunt),” stated the court.

The bench noted that the JJB’s remand orders were illegal and lacked jurisdiction. The court remarked that in the immediate reaction to the accident, the minor’s age was overlooked amid the public outcry and kneejerk reactions.

“The CCL is under 18 years old. His age needs to be considered,” the bench emphasized.

The court underscored that it was bound by the law and the aims of the Juvenile Justice Act, which mandates treating minors in conflict with the law differently from adults, regardless of the crime’s severity.

The order came in response to a plea from the 17-year-old’s paternal aunt, who argued that he was illegally detained due to public and political pressure, which led the police to deviate from proper investigative procedures, undermining the Juvenile Justice Act’s purpose.

Prashant Patil, the lawyer for the minor, said, “Today we challenged the three remands of the Juvenile Justice Board before the high court… We argued for his immediate release. Today, the court has directed his release. Custody has to be granted to the paternal aunt…”

The teenager, accused of driving drunk and causing a fatal collision on May 19, had been placed in an observation home in Pune. Initially granted bail on flimsy grounds after the accident, he was remanded to the observation home by the JJB on May 22, following a police request to amend the bail order. The boy’s family claimed the investigation was unduly influenced.
