IAS Puja Khedkar Breaks Silence After Centre Gets a Probe Panel

0

IAS Puja Khedkar controversy: IAS officer Puja Khedkar, currently embroiled in allegations of power misuse, stated on Friday that she is not authorized to comment on the controversies involving her and her family. The probationary assistant collector said she would present her submissions before the committee and adhere to the proper procedures.

“I am not authorized to say anything to the media. I will give my submissions before the committee. I will follow the procedure,” Khedkar told the media.

The 2023-batch IAS officer, still on probation, became the center of controversy after pictures of an Audi car with a ‘Maharashtra government’ board and a red-blue beacon went viral on social media. She allegedly demanded separate house and car privileges not available to junior officers and is also accused of illegally occupying the chamber of an additional collector.

Additionally, Khedkar faces severe charges that question her selection process in the civil services. She allegedly misused benefits under the physical disabilities category and the Other Backward Class (OBC) certificate.

Vijay Kumbhar, a Pune-based RTI activist, raised concerns about Khedkar’s appointment, alleging that the trainee IAS officer did not qualify for the OBC non-creamy layer as claimed during the recruitment process. Kumbhar asserted that her father has assets worth ₹40 crore.

The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions stated that a committee chaired by a senior officer of the rank of Additional Secretary to the Government of India will verify her candidature claims. The committee is expected to submit its report in two weeks.

Following a request from Pune District Collector Suhas Diwse, Khedkar has been transferred to Washim. Diwse had requested her posting to another district and sought action against her, reportedly writing in a report to the General Administration Department that Khedkar demanded a separate cabin, car, and residential quarters.

Ex-Andhra Pradesh CM Jagan Mohan Reddy Gets Booked For Attempt to Murder Case

0

Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was booked in connection with an attempted murder case on Friday, following a complaint by ruling party Undi MLA K Raghurama Krishna Raju. The state police have also booked two senior IPS officers and two retired officials based on the complaint.

“Raju sent his police complaint through mail one month ago, and after taking legal opinion, I registered a case at 7 pm on Thursday against the former CM and others,” an official told PTI.

The police also booked senior IPS officers PV Sunil Kumar and PSR Sitaramanjaneyulu, retired police officer R Vijay Paul, and former Guntur Government General Hospital superintendent G Prabhavati.

Sunil Kumar headed the CID in 2021, while Sitaramanjaneyulu led the Intelligence wing, and Vijay Paul served as ASP CID.

Raju, a TDP lawmaker, was arrested during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and allegedly faced “custodial torture.”

In his complaint filed on June 10, Raju claimed he was arrested without due process and “unlawfully physically pulled inside the police vehicle.”

“A false case was registered against me by the CB-CID of the Andhra Pradesh government. I was arrested without due process on May 14, including the absence of a medical examination or adherence to proper legal procedures. I was bullied, unlawfully physically pulled inside the police vehicle, and forcibly taken to Guntur the same night. I was kept in the CB-CID office, Guntur, from 9:30 pm onwards. I was not given my medicine despite having had an open-heart bypass surgery,” wrote the former YSRCP Lok Sabha MP Krishna Raju in the complaint.

He also stated that he faced death threats for “criticising the chief minister.”

This development comes just weeks after Reddy clashed with newly elected Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu following the demolition of the under-construction YSRCP central office in Tadepalli.

“Chandrababu took vendetta politics to the next level. Like a dictator, he got YSRCP’s central office demolished with excavators and bulldozers, which was almost complete,” Reddy accused in a social media post. He claimed that the demolition was carried out in complete disregard of High Court orders.

Why Is Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Still In Jail Despite Interim Bail by SC

On July 12, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case related to the alleged Delhi Liquor Policy Case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

However, Kejriwal will not be released from jail as he is currently in custody with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for the same Delhi Liquor Policy matter.

The Supreme Court bench, consisting of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, referred Kejriwal’s petition to a larger bench to determine if the necessity of arrest should be considered a condition under Section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The bench granted Kejriwal interim bail, taking into account his time in custody so far. The larger bench retains the authority to modify the interim bail, according to a report by legal news website Live Law.

Despite this, Kejriwal remains in Tihar Jail after being arrested by the CBI on June 25 under the Prevention of Corruption Act in connection with the liquor policy case.

Kejriwal was initially arrested by the ED on March 21 following the Delhi High Court’s refusal to grant interim protection. He remained in custody until the Supreme Court granted him interim release on May 10, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with the bail expiring on June 2.

Kejriwal first challenged his arrest by the ED in the Delhi High Court, which dismissed his plea on April 9. He then approached the Supreme Court, which issued a notice on his plea on April 15.

On June 20, a Delhi court granted bail to Kejriwal, who had been arrested by the ED on March 21, ordering his release on a personal bond of ₹1 lakh. However, the Delhi High Court stayed this order on June 25, the same day the CBI arrested him under the Prevention of Corruption Act in connection with the Liquor Policy case.

Kejriwal has also challenged his CBI arrest in the Delhi High Court and filed a bail plea in the CBI case. Both matters are set to be heard on July 17.

NATO-Russia Tensions Heat up As US Deploy Missiles in Germany

0

A day after the United States and Germany announced at a NATO summit in Washington that they would deploy long-range missiles in Germany in 2026 to demonstrate their commitment to European defense, Russia declared on Thursday that it would plan “response measures” to counter the “very serious threat” from the Western military alliance.

According to Russian news agency Tass, Sergei Ryabkov, Russia’s deputy foreign minister responsible for US relations, non-proliferation, and arms control, issued the warning, stating, “We will develop a military response to the new threat calmly, with a cool head.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that NATO is now “fully involved in the conflict over Ukraine,” as reported by Russian news agencies.

Peskov commented, “The North Atlantic alliance has once again very clearly confirmed its essence. It is an alliance created in an era of confrontation with the aim of maintaining confrontation.”

He added, “Tensions on the European continent are escalating” as a result.

Peskov further stated, “This obliges us to analyze very deeply the decisions taken in the discussion that took place. This is a very serious threat to the national security of our country. All of this will require us to take thoughtful, coordinated, effective responses to deter NATO, to counteract NATO.”

NATO announced on Wednesday that the “episodic deployments” were in preparation for longer-term stationing, which would include SM-6, Tomahawk cruise missiles, and hypersonic weapons with a longer range than current capabilities in Europe.

The Western military alliance also revealed that a new US air defense base in northern Poland, designed to detect and intercept ballistic missile attacks as part of a broader NATO missile shield, is now mission-ready.

China, criticizing NATO, accused it of seeking security at the expense of others and warned the alliance not to bring the same “chaos” to Asia.

In a statement issued at its summit, NATO said that China has become an enabler of the war through its “no-limits partnership” with Russia and its substantial support for Russia’s defense industrial base.

“NATO hyping up China’s responsibility on the Ukraine issue is unreasonable and has sinister motives,” said China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian at a daily briefing. He insisted that China maintains a fair and objective stance on the Ukraine issue.

Meghan Markle is Happy Seeing How People Are Enjoying her American Riviera Orchard

Meghan Markle is “pleased” with the strong start of her new brand, American Riviera Orchard, which is progressing exactly as planned.

The Duchess quietly launched her brand in March through an official Instagram account, having previously closed her personal social media accounts before marrying Prince Harry in 2018.

In March, Meghan filed trademarks for American Riviera Orchard to market items such as cutlery, cookbooks, and jarred foods, according to The United States Patent and Trademark Office.

A source told Us Weekly, “The rollout for American Riviera Orchard is already off to a strong start.”

“The website has over 100,000 people signed up to hear about the first product launches. Meghan is very pleased with the early interest it has gained.”

The insider added, “[Meghan] is so excited to see how people enjoy her products and use them in their everyday lives.”

The first product from American Riviera Orchard was a strawberry jam, which Meghan sent to her celebrity friends, including Victoria Beckham, Kris Jenner, and former Suits co-star and close friend Abigail Spencer.

Kris Jenner shared an Instagram story featuring the jam, saying, “Thank you @AmericanRivieraOrchard.” Spencer posted on Instagram, “This jam is my jam. A delicious taste of what’s to come indeed. Love you so M.”

In June, polo player Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Figueras revealed via his Instagram Story that the brand also offers raspberry jam. Figueras, a close friend of Prince Harry, shared a photo of the raspberry preserves with a heart emoji.

Each jar of jam features the brand’s official label, showcasing the name American Riviera Orchard in cursive below a gilded logo. Meghan has added a personal touch by handwriting the flavor on the label using her calligraphy skills.

Since stepping down from their roles as senior working royals in 2020, Meghan and Prince Harry have embarked on new ventures in California with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Among their initiatives, they signed a multi-year deal with Netflix to create various new projects.

Harry and Meghan’s Archewell Productions has already released several projects, including the six-part docuseries ‘Harry & Meghan’ in December 2022, which chronicles their departure from royal duties.

The Sussexes also produced the “Heart of Invictus” documentary about Harry’s Invictus Games, which premiered in August 2023.

Centre Forms a Panel to Probe Into IAS Puja Khedkar Case

0

In a new development involving probationary IAS officer Puja Khedkar, the Central government has formed a one-member panel to investigate allegations regarding her UPSC exam candidature. Khedkar is accused of improperly benefiting from disability and Other Backward Class quotas during the exam. The panel is expected to submit its report within two weeks.

“The Central Government has constituted a single-member Committee, chaired by a senior officer of the rank of Additional Secretary to the Government of India, to verify the candidature claims and other details of Ms. Puja Manorma Dilip Khedkar, a candidate of the Civil Services Examination-2022 and earlier CSEs. The Committee will submit its report in 2 weeks,” the government’s statement reads.

On Thursday, Puja Khedkar, 34, began her new role as assistant collector at the Washim District Collectorate following a transfer from Pune. She is accused of violating service rules by placing a red beacon and the label ‘Maharashtra government’ on her private Audi car. However, she arrived in a Bolero car and declined to comment on the controversy, citing service rules.

“I am not authorized to speak on the issue. Government rules don’t allow me to speak on this,” she said.

Meanwhile, police visited her residence to investigate the alleged misuse of the red beacon light and VIP number on her Audi car.

Puja Khedkar, a 2023-batch IAS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 841 in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam.

According to a report by Pune collector Suhas Diwse to the General Administration Department, Khedkar demanded a separate cabin, car, residential quarters, and a peon before even joining duty as a trainee on June 3. She allegedly removed a senior official’s nameplate at the Pune collector’s office to use his ante-chamber as her office.

Additionally, Khedkar is accused of submitting fake disability and Other Backward Class (OBC) certificates to clear the 2022 civil services exam and of presenting a fake mental illness certificate.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday due to back pain, as reported by PTI citing hospital officials.

Officials confirmed that Singh is stable and under observation. Dr. Rima Dada, in charge of AIIMS’ media cell, stated that he is undergoing tests. The 73-year-old was admitted early in the morning and is in the Old Private Ward.

Singh, who represents Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow in Parliament, first became the Defence Minister on June 1, 2019. On June 13, 2024, he assumed the position of Raksha Mantri for a second consecutive term.

Hardik Pandya All Set to Captain in T20I Series vs Sri Lanka

0

Completing his redemption on the grandest stage, Hardik Pandya is set to return to the Indian camp after a successful campaign for Team India in the T20 World Cup 2024. Hardik will headline India’s squad for the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka and is reportedly set to lead India in the shortest format following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from T20I cricket after the ICC World Cup.

Veteran Indian opener Rohit masterminded India’s second T20 World Cup triumph in the Caribbean last month. After ending India’s World Cup drought with a final-over win against South Africa, Rohit confirmed that he has played his last T20I for the Men in Blue. Former skipper Rohit, batting icon Virat Kohli, and veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirements after India were crowned champions in the Caribbean.

With Rohit, Kohli, and Jadeja making way for the next generation in T20Is, Hardik will take over the captaincy reins starting with the Sri Lanka series. “Hardik Pandya is all set to lead the Indian team in T20s after Rohit Sharma’s retirement. Hardik is also unlikely to be rested for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka,” Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sources told ANI.

Pandya served as Rohit’s deputy at the T20 World Cup. The Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper scored 144 runs in six innings at an average of 48.00 and a strike rate of 151.57. Pandya also took 11 wickets in eight games at an average of 17.36 and an economy rate of 7.64, with best figures of 3/20 in the ICC event.

KL Rahul will replace Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain. While Rohit will continue to lead India in the traditional formats, he will be rested for the Sri Lanka series. Premier batter KL Rahul will lead the Rohit-less side in the One Day International (ODI) series between India and Sri Lanka. “KL Rahul will lead the Indian team in the absence of Rohit Sharma as the board believes he excels in the longer format,” the sources added.

NATO All Set to Boost Ukraine’s Air Defenses and Send Aircrafts

0

NATO countries will provide Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets and new air defenses to counter an intensified Russian missile strike campaign, despite new assessments suggesting the conflict is headed for an indefinite stalemate.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan announced the plan but did not specify the details of the air defenses, although Ukraine has been requesting more Patriot systems to intercept Russian missiles. He also did not elaborate on the F-16s, over a year after President Joe Biden overcame his reluctance to send the jets to Ukraine.

This offer is part of a new package of commitments to Ukraine that NATO leaders will present during a three-day summit starting later Tuesday. The 32 leaders meeting in Washington aim to demonstrate renewed support, even as they resist giving Ukraine a definite timeline or concrete path toward membership.

“I think what we’ve seen over the last days demonstrates the need to step up our support for Ukraine,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters Tuesday.

Stoltenberg’s comments follow assessments that the conflict in Ukraine could continue indefinitely without an agreement to end the fighting. The latest battlefield analysis suggests neither side is poised to make significant gains, potentially leading to a prolonged stalemate. Ukraine has the resources to maintain its position but not to advance significantly.

The leaders gather amidst uncertainty for the alliance. President Joe Biden, scheduled to deliver a speech to fellow leaders Tuesday night, faces questions about his age and fitness for office. Other leaders, including France’s Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, are dealing with political challenges at home.

Meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin is less isolated than the West would prefer. Earlier Tuesday, he welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Moscow and continues to strengthen ties with China, which has increased its support for Russia with dual-use items for weapons.

The Biden administration aims to portray the summit as a success for the US president, highlighting his efforts to repair relations with allies over the past four years since replacing Donald Trump. They seek to contrast this with the potential chaos if Trump is re-elected in November.

Embattled Biden, Weakened Allies Fuel Doubts at NATO’s 75th

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has pushed for a concrete, time-bound plan for Ukraine to join NATO, which President Putin strongly opposes and NATO nations have been reluctant to offer. A summit statement expected this week is anticipated to provide Ukraine an “irreversible” path to membership, contingent on necessary anti-corruption reforms.

A person familiar with Ukraine’s position stated that Zelenskiy’s team is dissatisfied with this approach, arguing that what the country truly wants is a formal invitation to join the alliance.

NATO nations are also grappling with the reality that the conflict, now in its third year, seems further from resolution than ever. A senior NATO official, speaking anonymously, said Putin believes time is on his side and that the war will extend beyond 2025.

Emphasizing the urgency for air defenses, Russia launched a missile barrage on the eve of the summit Monday, killing at least 40 people, including in a strike on a children’s hospital. Zelenskiy, who was scheduled to speak in Washington later Tuesday, has become increasingly frustrated with NATO’s slow pace in providing additional air defenses.

The US and its allies have struggled to find more Patriot batteries to send, as most systems are already allocated globally. The push to deliver F-16s and train pilots has also been slow, hampered by protracted training times and a lack of pilots.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal is Accused Number 37 in ED’s Chargesheet

0

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has named Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as accused number 37 and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as accused number 38 in its supplementary chargesheet for the Delhi Excise Policy Case.

As reported by India TV, the chargesheet identifies Kejriwal as the kingpin and main conspirator in money laundering activities related to the excise case. It alleges that Kejriwal was aware of and involved in using bribe money for the Goa elections, citing WhatsApp chats between him and accused Vinod Chauhan as evidence.

The chargesheet also claims that K Kavitha’s PA funneled over ₹25 crore to AAP through Vinod during the Goa elections. An India Today report mentions that AAP allegedly received ₹45 crore of the ₹100 crore kickback, which was routed for the Goa Assembly campaign through hawala channels. Vinod Chauhan, a close aide of Kejriwal, is said to have directly interacted with hawala traders and managed the transfer of ₹25 crore for the Goa polls.

Meanwhile, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court has approved Kejriwal’s request to appear virtually on July 12. AAP has accused the BJP-led Centre of orchestrating a “big conspiracy” against them, claiming that the ED is acting as a “political wing” of the BJP and that there is no money trail in the case.

The Delhi High Court has scheduled a hearing for the ED’s plea challenging Kejriwal’s bail for July 15. Previously, the high court stayed the trial court’s June 20 order granting bail to Kejriwal. Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21 and by the CBI on June 26. According to the CBI and ED, irregularities and undue favours were involved in modifying the excise policy and extending licences.
