Barrack Obama Expresses Concern Over Biden’s Bid

0

Former President Barack Obama has raised concerns about Joe Biden’s reportedly declining health, suggesting that the US President should seriously reconsider his re-election bid ahead of the Presidential elections. Although Obama has supported Biden’s candidacy as a Democrat, he has told allies that Biden’s chances of winning have significantly decreased, according to The Washington Post.

Obama’s concerns surfaced shortly after former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi advised Joe Biden that he cannot defeat Republican candidate Donald Trump. Pelosi warned that Biden’s continued campaign could jeopardize the Democrats’ chances of retaining the House in the upcoming November elections.

Despite these concerns, President Biden has assured Pelosi that polls indicate he can win the election.

Following Biden’s problematic debate with Donald Trump on June 27, where he appeared to struggle, many analysts have expressed doubts about Biden’s re-election prospects due to his “failing” health.

Last week, Obama and Pelosi reportedly discussed their concerns about Biden’s campaign and his declining popularity in a private conversation.

The 81-year-old Biden has rejected numerous calls from within his party to step aside, insisting that he remains the best-positioned Democrat to defeat Trump. He continues to rely on strong support from Black and Latino elected officials.

Some believe that an assassination attempt on Donald Trump may have bolstered the Republican candidate’s chances. The President and his campaign have refrained from criticizing Trump following the incident at a rally in Pennsylvania, where Trump was injured, one person was killed, and two others were injured. The suspected 20-year-old shooter was also killed by a Secret Service agent.

Millions Stolen From India’s Biggest Crypto Exchange WazirX

WazirX reported a significant security breach, causing the crypto exchange to temporarily halt INR and crypto withdrawals. This decision followed the suspicious transfer of $230 million worth of assets from one of its multisig wallets, which require two or more private keys to access.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), WazirX stated, “We’re aware that one of our multisig wallets has experienced a security breach. Our team is actively investigating the incident. To ensure the safety of your assets, INR and crypto withdrawals will be temporarily paused. Thank you for your patience and understanding. We’ll keep you posted with further updates.”

Third-party blockchain analytics tool Lookonchain reported that the stolen assets included $102 million in Shiba Inu, $52.5 million in Ethereum, $11.24 million in Matic, $7.6 million in Pepe coin, $135 million in Tether, and $3.5 million in Gala.

Responding to the incident, Ashish Singhal, co-founder of CoinSwitch, said, “We are aware of the recent security breach on the WazirX platform. We want to assure our users that their funds on CoinSwitch are secure and unaffected by this incident. We advise all our crypto investors to be mindful of potential market volatility during this time and exercise caution in their trading and investment activities.”

Sumit Gupta, co-founder of CoinDCX, added, “In light of the recent #WazirX breach, we want to reassure all CoinDCX users that your assets are safe and not impacted in any manner. Our wallet security remains robust.”

Edul Patel, CEO of Mudrex, commented, “We conduct regular audits to ensure a 1:1 ratio of funds. Additionally, our codebase goes through extensive scrutiny and review at many layers to ensure our tech infrastructure is immune to such exploits.”

Bengal Govt Makes New Committee to Review Criminal Laws

0

Kolkata: The West Bengal government has established a seven-member committee, led by a retired judge of the Calcutta High Court, to review three new criminal laws.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s administration issued a notification regarding this on Wednesday.

“The state government is pleased to constitute a committee for reviewing the said criminal laws: Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS); Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS); and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 (BSA),” the notification from the state home department stated.

The three new laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam—came into effect nationwide on July 1, replacing the British-era Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act.

According to the notification, the committee will be chaired by retired justice Ashim Kumar Roy and will include state law minister Malay Ghatak, state finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, the state advocate general, senior standing counsel of West Bengal in the Supreme Court Sanjay Basu, West Bengal police chief, and Kolkata police commissioner.

“The committee shall submit its findings in the form of a report within three months from the date of the notification,” the notification added.

The committee may engage academic experts, senior advocates, research assistants, and other legal experts and can also carry out public consultations.

West Bengal is the third state after Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to set up a committee to amend the three criminal laws.

Earlier this month, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin constituted a one-man commission to recommend amendments to the three new criminal laws at the state level, including a change of name.

In June, Banerjee sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting a deferment of the implementation of the three criminal laws and sought further discussions on them in Parliament.

ED Detains Ex Karnataka Minister Wife in Bengaluru

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has detained Manjula, the wife of former Karnataka Minister B Nagendra. She has been brought to the ED’s regional office in Bengaluru.

Earlier, a Bengaluru court granted judicial custody to former Karnataka Minister B Nagendra in connection with the alleged Valmiki Corporation Scam until July 18.

The ED arrested Nagendra in relation to the alleged multi-crore scam case. Following the arrest, he was presented before the court in Bengaluru.

The ED detained the former Karnataka Minister after conducting raids at various locations linked to him and MLA Basanagouda Daddal concerning the alleged embezzlement of funds in the Valmiki Development Corporation.

The state government has faced growing protests from the BJP, which has alleged a major scam within the corporation. However, the state government denied any wrongdoing earlier this week.

“There is no scam. All scams were created by the BJP during their tenure. BJP is the father of scams. Now we are trying to clean up everything, and they cannot digest it as their names will come out,” said Deputy CM DK Shivakumar on Monday.

The alleged corruption case involving the Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation came to light after an official of the corporation died by suicide, leaving a note alleging multi-crore corruption within the corporation.

The official, identified as Chandrasekaran (45), a resident of the Kenchappa colony in Vinobanagar, allegedly died by suicide on May 26, leaving a note alleging multi-crore corruption within the corporation. Chandrasekaran was a superintendent with the MVDC and was posted at its Bengaluru office.

In a six-page suicide note recovered by police, Chandrasekaran named three officials and alleged corruption worth crores within the corporation, demanding action against the named officials. On June 6, Nagendra announced that he had voluntarily decided to resign while an investigation was ongoing regarding the allegations of illegal money transfers from Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation Ltd. The former Karnataka Minister dismissed all allegations against him and expressed confidence that he would be cleared after the investigation.

Elon Musk All Set to Move X, SpaceX HQ to Texas

0

Elon Musk announced that the headquarters for both X and SpaceX will relocate to Texas, citing frustration over California’s laws, where the companies are currently based.

Musk made the announcement on his X social media site on Tuesday. He pointed to a new law in California, which became the first US state to ban school districts from requiring teachers to notify parents about changes to a student’s sexual orientation and gender identity.

SpaceX’s headquarters are currently in Hawthorne, California, but the company has been expanding a large facility in South Texas, known as Starbase, over the past few years. The Boca Chica site is the primary location for building and launching SpaceX’s massive Starship rocket system.

Recently, SpaceX added a massive warehouse factory at Starbase called the Starfactory, which has replaced many of the site’s production tents.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated in an X post that the move “cements Texas as the leader in space exploration.”

Musk’s announcement follows the company’s earlier decision this year to move its business incorporation to Texas from Delaware. Musk also shifted the incorporation of many of his companies out of frustration with a judge’s decision to void his pay package as CEO of Tesla Inc.

Musk also announced on Tuesday that X’s headquarters will move to Austin.

In December 2021, Musk moved Tesla’s headquarters from California to Austin due to frustration with pandemic lockdowns. However, Tesla still maintains a significant presence in California, with an engineering headquarters in Palo Alto.

Piyush Goyal Reveals Free Trade Agreements with UK and EU Ministers

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal discussed deeper economic ties and free trade agreements (FTA) with his counterparts from the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK) during the G7 Trade Ministers meeting in Italy on Wednesday, the commerce ministry said in a statement.

“The meeting served as a pivotal platform for discussions on enhancing global trade relations and economic cooperation,” the ministry stated. “Goyal engaged in several high-level bilateral meetings with international counterparts, reflecting India’s commitment to fostering stronger economic partnerships globally.”

During the two-day event in Reggio Calabria, Italy, Goyal met with Antonio Tajani, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister; Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission; Todd McClay, New Zealand’s Trade Minister; Jonathan Reynolds, the UK’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade; and Robert Habeck, Germany’s Federal Minister for Economic Affairs & Climate Action. According to the commerce ministry, these meetings highlighted India’s proactive approach to engaging with global economies to foster trade and economic cooperation.

Other initiatives discussed included the G20 Generic Framework for Mapping GVCs, the IPEF association, the trilateral Supply Chain Resilience Initiative (SCRI), and the India-European Union Trade and Technology Council (TTC).

India’s efforts with strategic partners such as the US, GCC countries, and the EU, including the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) to strengthen supply chains, and domestic measures to enhance multimodal connectivity were also addressed, the ministry added.

As it stands, India and the 27-nation EU have concluded eight rounds of talks on a proposed free trade agreement and are likely to meet for further discussions in September. India has previously raised concerns about issues such as the EU’s ‘carbon tax’ and the relaxation of the EU’s rules on the maximum pesticide residue allowed in agricultural goods. Meanwhile, the proposed India-UK free-trade agreement is nearly ready and could be signed as early as October.

“The minister proposed collaboration among trusted partners to reinforce global supply chains in critical areas such as minerals, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and green energy. He advocated public-private partnerships, investments in critical infrastructure, innovation, and consistent regulatory frameworks across G7 countries and partner nations,” the commerce ministry said. “He emphasised the need for resilient supply chains that endure beyond the current generation.”

Supreme Court Rejects The Plea to Hear Adani-Hidenburg Case

The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition seeking a review of its January 3 verdict, which refused to order a separate investigation into allegations of accounting fraud and stock manipulation against Adani Group companies. These allegations were initially raised in a report by US short-seller Hindenburg Research in January 2023.

A three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, found no merit in the plea moved by Anamika Jaiswal, one of the original writ petitioners in the case.

“Having perused the review petition, there is no error apparent on the face of the record. No case for review under Order XLVII Rule 1 of the Supreme Court Rules 2013. The review petition is, therefore, dismissed,” stated the bench, which also included Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. The review petition was dismissed on May 8, but the order was made public on Monday. Judges consider review petitions in their chambers without holding oral hearings.

Jaiswal’s petition, filed in February, claimed that the court’s judgment contained errors apparent on the face of the record and overlooked the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s (SEBI) regulatory failures, which contributed to alleged regulatory contraventions and statutory violations.

Arguing that the court should not have endorsed SEBI’s investigation without acknowledging the outcomes of the probe, Jaiswal pointed out that SEBI’s status report merely indicated the completion status of the 24 investigations without disclosing any findings or details on actions taken. She asserted that unless SEBI’s investigation findings are publicly reported, it cannot be concluded that there was no regulatory failure.

The review plea further argued that legislative amendments made by SEBI in 2018 and 2019, which modified the Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPI) regulations, diluted the requirements for disclosing beneficial owners (BOs) and listing disclosures by removing the prohibition against an FPI having an “opaque structure.” The petition contended that the apex court failed to notice the impact of these amendments.

In its January verdict, the top court concluded that there was no material to show “glaring, willful, or deliberate inaction” by SEBI in its investigation or any suggestion of regulatory failure by the market regulator. The court dismissed the reliance on the Hindenburg report or other unsubstantiated news reports as the basis for questioning SEBI’s comprehensive investigation. It rejected pleas, including one filed by Jaiswal, for the creation of a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate Hindenburg’s allegations, noting that newspaper articles or reports by third-party organizations cannot be treated as conclusive proof of SEBI’s probe inadequacy.

The judgment recorded that SEBI had completed investigations into 22 out of 24 allegations against the Adani group, giving the regulator three months to conclude the two pending investigations. It also directed investigative agencies of the Union government to probe whether the loss suffered by Indian investors due to the conduct of Hindenburg Research and other entities involved any infraction of law and to take suitable action if so.

Hindenburg’s report, published in January 2023, claimed “brazen accounting fraud” and “stock manipulation” by the Gautam Adani-led group. Though the conglomerate rejected the report as “unresearched” and “maliciously mischievous,” it triggered a massive rout of Adani group stocks, which lost over $140 billion in days and forced the cancellation of a planned ₹20,000 crore share sale.

A set of petitions filed separately by lawyers and activists demanded a court-monitored probe into the matter by setting up an SIT under the supervision of a retired judge. Some petitioners also questioned the validity of the 2018 and 2019 amendments in the FPI regulations. However, the court judgment rejected the petitioners’ contentions, ruling that the impugned amendments had tightened the norms on disclosure of BOs under the FPI and LODR (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements).

Donald Trump Gets A Major Legal Win as He Gets Ready to Accept Republican Nomination

0

Donald Trump achieved a significant legal victory on Monday when a federal judge dismissed one of the criminal prosecutions against him. This decision came just as he was preparing to accept the Republican Party’s presidential nomination, shortly after surviving an assassination attempt.

A U.S. judge in Florida, who was appointed by Trump, dismissed the case accusing the former president of illegally retaining classified documents after leaving office. The judge ruled that the prosecutor handling the case was unlawfully appointed.

This news broke at the outset of the 2024 Republican convention in Milwaukee, where Trump will announce his vice-presidential pick and formally accept the party’s nomination to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden in the November 5 election.

Trump, 78, and Biden, 81, are neck and neck in opinion polls. Trump continues to falsely claim that his 2020 loss to Biden was due to widespread fraud and has not committed to accepting the election results if he were to lose.

The campaign was dramatically altered on Saturday when Trump was shot in the ear at a rally in Pennsylvania by a 20-year-old gunman, whose motive remains unknown.

In response to the attempt on his life, Trump stated he is revising his acceptance speech to focus on national unity rather than highlighting differences with Biden. “This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago,” Trump told the Washington Examiner.

Following the judge’s decision to dismiss the documents case, Trump argued that his other pending prosecutions should also be dismissed. He is still awaiting trial in two cases: a federal prosecution in Washington and a Georgia state prosecution, both related to his attempts to overturn his 2020 election defeat.

The Supreme Court’s July 1 ruling that he has immunity for many actions taken as president could complicate these cases.

Trump is also scheduled to be sentenced in New York in September for attempting to cover up a hush-money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels during the weeks before his 2016 election victory.

“This dismissal of the Lawless Indictment in Florida should be just the first step, followed quickly by the dismissal of ALL the Witch Hunts,” Trump posted on his Truth Social site on Monday, also referencing the prosecutions of hundreds of his supporters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

NO PLACE FOR VIOLENCE

In a televised address from the White House on Sunday, Biden emphasized the need to reject violence. “There is no place in America for this kind of violence, for any violence ever. Period. No exceptions. We can’t allow this violence to be normalized,” he said regarding the assassination attempt.

The shooting has shifted the focus of the presidential campaign, which had previously centered on whether Biden should drop out following a lackluster debate performance on June 27. Nearly two dozen Democrats have urged Biden to end his reelection bid, but this debate has been postponed following Saturday’s incident.

This week, the focus will be on Trump. With consolidated party control, Trump has the opportunity to deliver a unifying message or continue painting a bleak picture of a nation under siege by a corrupt leftist elite, as he has done in previous campaign speeches.

Trump has frequently used violent rhetoric, referring to a “bloodbath” and labeling his perceived enemies as “vermin” and “fascists.” He has also accused Biden, without evidence, of conspiring to overthrow the United States by encouraging illegal immigration.

Biden has often warned that a Trump victory in November would undermine the United States’ democratic system. Some Republicans argue that such comments contributed to the conditions that led to the shooting.

Investigators have been unable to identify any ideology that may have motivated 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks to shoot at Trump from a rooftop outside a campaign event. Biden has ordered an independent review of how the gunman, who was shot dead by agents moments after opening fire, managed to get so close to Trump despite heavy Secret Service security at the event in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The FBI reported that Crooks’ social media profiles contained no threatening language, nor did they find any history of mental health issues. They confirmed he acted alone.

Crooks worked as a nursing home aide near his hometown of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, and graduated high school with a reputation as a bright but quiet student. His guidance counselor described him as “respectful” and noted he had never known Crooks to be political.

IAS Officer Puja Khedkar Speaks Out Amid Fake Disability, OBC Certificate Probe

0

On Monday, IAS trainee officer Puja Khedkar expressed confidence that the truth will prevail as she prepares to present her case to the central committee investigating allegations of misusing disability provisions and Other Backward Class (OBC) quotas to secure her civil service position.

Speaking to reporters, Puja Khedkar condemned what she viewed as a biased media trial, firmly denying any fraudulent actions in her exam process. “Our Indian Constitution is based on the principle ‘innocent until proven guilty,’ so being judged guilty by a media trial is wrong,” Khedkar stated in Washim.

The IAS probationer is accused of misrepresentation under physical disabilities and OBC categories in her civil services application.

“I will testify before the committee. I believe that whatever decision the committee makes should be acceptable to all,” Khedkar said in Washim.

Puja Khedkar recently sparked controversy when she reportedly requested a separate cabin and staff during her posting in Pune, followed by a sudden transfer to Washim district. Subsequently, she faced further allegations of securing her IAS position by applying under the OBC category with an annual income of less than ₹8 lakh, and under the visually impaired category, while submitting a certificate for mental illness.

Her father, Dilip Khedkar, a former Maharashtra government employee who contested the Lok Sabha elections and declared property worth ₹40 crore in his poll affidavit, told a Marathi news channel on Sunday that she indeed belongs to the non-creamy layer.

However, no mental illness certificate was submitted by Puja Khedkar during her MBBS tenure at a Pune college, confirmed the hospital’s director on Monday.

Puja Khedkar declined to comment on the controversy. “My role here as a probationer is to work and learn, and that is what I am focusing on. I cannot comment on that matter,” she said.

“The government committee experts will decide. Neither I, nor the media, nor the public can make that decision,” Khedkar said.

“Whenever the committee’s decision is made, it will be public and open to scrutiny. But at this moment, I do not have the right to disclose details about the ongoing investigation,” she added.

When asked if she is being targeted, Khedkar responded, “Everybody knows what is going on.” She reiterated that the Indian Constitution is based on the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

Rahul Gandhi Asks Supporters to Stop Being Hateful Towards Smriti Irani

0

Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday urged people to avoid using derogatory language and being nasty towards former Union minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani and other leaders.

Posting on the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter), the former Congress president wrote: “Winning and losing are part of life. I urge everyone to refrain from using derogatory language and being nasty towards Smt. Smriti Irani or any other leader.”

“Humiliating and insulting people is a sign of weakness, not strength,” he added.

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, former Union minister Irani lost the Amethi constituency in Uttar Pradesh to veteran Congress worker and Gandhi family confidant Kishori Lal Sharma by a margin of 1.5 lakh votes. In 2019, Irani had defeated Rahul Gandhi in his stronghold, Amethi, by a margin of over 55,000 votes.

After her defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, Irani expressed her gratitude to her supporters.

“I express my gratitude to all the BJP party workers and supporters, those who have worked in the service of the constituency and the party with utmost dedication and fidelity… I congratulate those who win. I will continue to be in the service of the people of Amethi.”

“Such is life… A decade of my life going from one village to another, building lives, nurturing hope & aspirations, working on infrastructure – roads, drains, paving, bypass, medical college, and more. To those who stood by me through loss and victory, I am forever grateful. To those celebrating today, congratulations. And to those asking, ‘How’s the josh?’ I say – it’s still high, Sir.”

In the 2024 general elections, Rahul Gandhi contested and won in the Rae Bareli and Wayanad constituencies, but later resigned from the Kerala constituency. The Congress has announced that party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will contest from Wayanad.
