Kamala Harris Challenges Donald Trump

0

U.S. Vice President and presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has challenged her Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump, to a debate, urging him to say whatever he has to directly to her.

Speaking at an election rally in Atlanta, Georgia, on Tuesday, Harris, 59, remarked that the dynamics of the presidential race shifted once she joined the contest.

Harris officially announced her candidacy after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race for a second term on July 20.

“The momentum in this race is shifting, and there are signs that Donald Trump is feeling it. You might have noticed that he recently pulled out of the September debate he had previously agreed to,” Harris said.

“Well Donald, I hope you’ll reconsider meeting me on the debate stage because, as the saying goes, if you’ve got something to say, say it to my face,” she continued, drawing cheers from the crowd.

“It’s interesting—he won’t debate, but he and his running mate sure seem to have a lot to say about me,” Harris added.

According to the campaign, around 10,000 people attended her rally in Atlanta, a crucial battleground state.

“The road to the White House runs right through this state. You helped us win in 2020, and we’re going to do it again in 2024. Yes, we will,” she declared.

Harris emphasized that the campaign is about more than just opposing Trump. “This campaign represents two very different visions for our nation: one focused on the future, and the other stuck in the past,” she said.

“We’re not going back because ours is a fight for the future—a fight for freedom,” she asserted.

“Across the country, we are seeing a full-on assault on hard-fought freedoms and rights: the freedom to vote, the freedom from gun violence, the freedom to live without fear of bigotry and hate, the freedom to love who you love openly and with pride, the freedom to learn and understand our true and full history, and the freedom of a woman to make decisions about her own body without government interference,” Harris stated.

“This is a fight for the future and for freedom. I don’t have to tell folks in Atlanta that generations of Americans before us led the fight for freedom. Now, the baton is in our hands—each and every one of us,” Harris concluded.

Cyber Attack On Service Provider Hits Payment Systems of 300 Banks

A ransomware attack on a technology service provider has temporarily halted payment services for around 300 small Indian banks.

The attack targeted C-Edge Technologies, which provides banking technology systems to small banks across the country, leading to a shutdown of their payment operations.

As a result, customers of these banks were unable to withdraw cash from ATMs or use UPI services. The impact was particularly felt by customers of cooperative banks and regional rural banks, which rely on C-Edge, a joint venture between SBI and TCS.

In response, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) issued a statement saying it had temporarily isolated C-Edge from accessing retail payment systems as a precautionary measure.

“C-Edge Technologies… has possibly been affected by a ransomware attack impacting a few of their systems,” NPCI stated.

Authorities are working urgently to restore the systems. According to PTI, a third-party audit was conducted after isolating the ransomware. If all goes according to plan, the system is expected to be operational by Thursday morning.

“During this period of isolation, customers of banks serviced by C-Edge will be unable to access payment systems,” NPCI noted.

A source added that most of the affected banks are small, and only about 0.5% of the country’s payment system volumes would be impacted.

National Cooperative Union of India chairman Dileep Sanghani reported that nearly 300 banks in India, including 17 district cooperative banks in Gujarat, have been experiencing issues for the past two to three days.

“All online transactions, such as RTGS and UPI payments, are affected. Money is deducted from the sender’s account but does not get credited to the receiver’s account,” said Sanghani, who is also the chairman of Amreli District Central Cooperative Bank.

Hamas Chief Shared Stage With Nitin Gadkari Hours Before He Got Killed

Indian Union Minister Nitin Gadkari shared the stage with Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh on Tuesday, less than 24 hours before Haniyeh was killed in a pre-dawn airstrike in Iran. Both leaders, along with other international dignitaries, were attending the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran.

Senior officials from several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, Iraq, Armenia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Cuba, and Brazil, were also present at the event. European Union envoy Enrique Mora was reportedly in attendance as well, according to AFP.

Haniyeh was joined at the ceremony by other Iran-backed regional allies, including Ziyad al-Nakhalah of Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah deputy secretary general Naim Qassem from Lebanon, and Mohammed Abdulsalam, spokesperson for Yemen’s Huthi rebels.

Following Haniyeh’s death, Hamas and Iran, who blamed Israel for the strike, vowed retaliation. Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also threatened “harsh punishment” for Haniyeh’s killing, stating, “We consider it our duty to seek revenge for his blood as he was martyred in the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Iran’s new President Masoud Pezeshkian echoed this sentiment, warning the Zionists of impending consequences. “The Zionists will soon see the consequences of their cowardly and terrorist act,” he said, adding that such actions indicate the “policies of the Zionist regime have reached a dead end.”

Israel has not commented on the Tehran strike, which came after it targeted a Hezbollah stronghold in south Beirut, aiming at a senior commander of the Lebanese militant group blamed for a deadly rocket strike on the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights over the weekend.

This event occurs in the context of heightened tensions, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu having pledged to destroy Hamas in response to its October 7 attacks on Israel, which led to the deaths of 1,197 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Amit Shah Claims Centre Warned Kerela Govt About Wayanad Landslides

“Wayanad landslides: Union Home Minister Amit Shah claimed in Parliament on Wednesday that the central government’s early warning system had alerted the Kerala government, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, about potential weather anomalies and natural disasters ‘seven days before’ the devastating landslides that claimed over 150 lives in Wayanad district.

Amit Shah stated, ‘On July 23, the government of India provided an early warning to the Kerala government, which was seven days before the incident.’

He further emphasized that the Centre had issued multiple early warnings to Kerala prior to the heavy rains that triggered a series of catastrophic landslides in the state.

‘On July 24 and 25, additional early warnings were issued. On July 26, a warning was given about the possibility of heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm, along with the risk of landslides, mudflow, and potential loss of life,’ Shah added.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Amit Shah criticized the Kerala government for not responding to the early warnings or the arrival of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams. He revealed that nine NDRF battalions were dispatched on July 23, with an additional three sent on July 30, yet the state failed to take sufficient action.

The senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader also criticized the Opposition for questioning the central government’s early warning systems and its response to the tragedy.

‘Questions are being raised about the government’s early warning system… The government has invested ₹2,000 crores since 2014 for the early warning system,’ Shah said, condemning the CPI(M) government in Kerala.

Amit Shah pointed out that several states, including Odisha and Gujarat, have effectively used early warnings provided by the Centre to mitigate the impact of natural disasters like cyclones.

The Home Minister suggested that had the Kerala government responded promptly to the early warning and acted quickly when the NDRF teams arrived, the extent of the losses could have been significantly reduced.

The series of catastrophic landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district has resulted in at least 158 fatalities and over 200 injuries, with the death toll expected to rise as rescue operations continue.

However, on Wednesday, MoS Home Nityanand Rai, while addressing the Rajya Sabha, stated that ‘133 bodies have been recovered so far.'”

“Delhi UPSC aspirants’ deaths: Rau’s IAS Study Circle announced on X on Wednesday, July 31, that they are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation into the tragic deaths of three UPSC aspirants on July 27.

In their statement, Rau’s IAS Study Circle expressed deep sorrow over the loss of students Tanya Soni, Nivin Dalwin, and Shreya Yadav, extending their heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.

On Saturday, three students, identified as Shreya Yadav, Tanya Soni, and Nevin Dalvin, lost their lives when water from a flooded drain surged into the basement library of Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar.

‘Rau’s IAS Study Circle is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation. We ask that everyone respects the privacy of the families during this difficult time. Their dreams and dedication will always be remembered,’ the tweet read.

On Sunday, Delhi Police arrested the owner and coordinator of Rau’s IAS Study Circle, charging them with culpable homicide.

Additionally, on Wednesday, a Delhi court denied bail to an SUV driver and four owners of the coaching centre basement in Old Rajinder Nagar, where the flooding led to the deaths of the three civil services aspirants.

Judicial Magistrate Vinod Kumar rejected the bail pleas of driver Manuj Kathuria and basement owners Tejinder Singh, Parvinder Singh, Harvinder Singh, and Sarabjeet Singh.

Earlier on Sunday, a magisterial court had remanded Rau’s IAS Study Circle owner Abhishek Gupta and coordinator Deshpal Singh to 14 days of judicial custody.”

Supreme Court Adjourns Bail Hearing of Manish Sisodia

Delhi Excise Policy Case: The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned the hearing of the bail plea filed by former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia to August 5, as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) requested more time to file a response in the excise policy money laundering case.

The apex court has granted the ED until Thursday, August 1, to file their reply. Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) informed the Supreme Court that it has already filed its response, which the court directed to be brought on record.

Sisodia is seeking bail, contending that he has been in custody for 16 months and that the trial against him has not progressed since October last year.

A bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan heard Sisodia’s pleas.

On July 16, the Supreme Court agreed to hear the pleas and requested responses from both the CBI and the ED.

The AAP leader was arrested by the CBI on February 26, 2023, in connection with alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy 2021-22. The ED arrested him in the money laundering case stemming from the CBI FIR on March 9 last year.

He resigned from the Delhi cabinet on February 28 last year.

Sisodia’s plea notes that the law officer representing the probe agencies had informed the top court on June 4 that the charge sheet and the prosecution complaint in the main excise policy case and the linked money laundering case, respectively, would be filed on or before July 3.

A prosecution complaint is the ED’s equivalent of a charge sheet.

On June 4, the apex court had refused to entertain Sisodia’s bail pleas in the two cases.

It had stated that Sisodia could revive his petitions for bail after the ED and the CBI filed the final prosecution complaint and the charge sheet, respectively, in these cases.

The top court added that any subsequent bail application would be considered on its own merits, as observed in its October 30, 2023 order.

Sisodia had previously moved the apex court challenging the Delhi High Court’s May 21 order dismissing his bail pleas. He had also challenged a trial court’s April 30 order rejecting his bail applications in the two cases.

On October 30 last year, the top court denied him bail in the two cases, citing the accusation of “windfall gains” of ₹338 crore to wholesale liquor dealers as “tentatively supported” by evidence.

While dismissing the regular bail plea, the top court granted Sisodia the liberty to approach the courts for relief if there was a change in circumstances or if the trial became protracted.

UP Assembly Passes Amended Anti-Conversion Bill

0

The Uttar Pradesh Assembly passed the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion (Amendment) Bill, 2024, on Tuesday, July 30. This bill enhances the punishment for forced conversions, increasing the penalty from 10 years with a fine of ₹50,000 to life imprisonment for deceiving a woman into marriage or converting her religion.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna introduced the bill in the House on Monday.

The amendment stipulates that if an individual threatens, attacks, marries, promises to marry, conspires, or traffics a woman, minor, or anyone with the intent to convert them, the offense will be considered among the most serious. Those found guilty could face up to 20 years imprisonment or life imprisonment.

Previously, the bill required the presence of the victim, her parents, or siblings to file a complaint about a conversion case. The amended provisions now allow any person to register an FIR in such cases.

All conversion cases will be heard by courts no lower than the Sessions Court, and bail pleas will not be considered without an opportunity for the public prosecutor to be heard. All crimes under the amended act have been made non-bailable.

The Opposition, including the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram), has accused the Yogi Adityanath-led government of diverting attention from main issues.

“What else do they have, they are not doing anything new,” said a spokesperson from the Samajwadi Party when asked about the bill outside Parliament.

Azad Samaj Party MP Chandrashekhar criticized the government, stating, “The government is unable to fulfill the basic needs of people. They are unable to provide food, shelter, housing, good health, and good education, but they are focused on such issues because it suits them. For us, employment and price rise are the real issues, and we are working on those.”

Meta Accepts $1.4 Billion Settlement with Texas

0

Meta Platforms has agreed to pay $1.4 billion to Texas to settle the state’s lawsuit accusing the Facebook parent of illegally using facial-recognition technology to collect biometric data of millions of Texans without their consent.

The terms of the settlement, disclosed on Tuesday, mark the largest accord ever by any single state, according to the lawyers for Texas, whose legal team included the plaintiffs firm Keller Postman.

The lawsuit, filed in 2022, was the first major case brought under Texas’ 2009 biometric privacy law, which allows for damages of up to $25,000 per violation.

Texas accused Facebook of capturing biometric information “billions of times” from photos and videos that users uploaded to the social media platform as part of a free, now-discontinued feature called “Tag Suggestions.”

A spokesperson for Meta said the company is pleased to resolve the matter and looks forward to “exploring future opportunities to deepen our business investments in Texas, including potentially developing data centers.” Meta has continued to deny any wrongdoing.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton stated that the settlement demonstrates the state’s “commitment to standing up to the world’s biggest technology companies and holding them accountable for breaking the law and violating Texans’ privacy rights.”

Texas and Meta reached an accord in May, weeks before the trial was scheduled to begin in state court.

In a separate case, Meta agreed to pay $650 million in 2020 to settle a biometric privacy class action under Illinois’ stringent privacy law, while also denying any wrongdoing.

Meanwhile, Alphabet’s Google is fighting a lawsuit by Texas accusing the company of violating the state’s biometric law.

EU Suggests India to Implement Own Carbon Tax System

0

New Delhi: Amid ongoing free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations, the European Union (EU) has proposed that India implement its own carbon tax system instead of contributing to the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), commerce and industries minister Piyush Goyal announced on Tuesday.

“They (EU) are very keen to pursue that and they have offered that India could, instead of paying CBAM tax to the EU, devise its own mechanism,” Goyal said. “We will consider their suggestion and come up with whatever is good for the Indian industry and for the people of India,” he added.

The CBAM is a tariff on carbon-intensive imports such as steel, cement, and certain electricity products entering the EU. It aims to promote cleaner industrial production practices in non-EU countries.

As part of the European Green Deal, CBAM will take effect in 2026, with reporting requirements beginning in 2023. A report by the economic think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) estimates that the CBAM could impose a 20-35% tax on specific imports into the EU starting January 1, 2026. This will impact companies in seven carbon-intensive sectors, including steel, cement, fertilizers, aluminum, and hydrocarbons. Notably, about 27% of India’s exports of iron ore pellets, iron, steel, and aluminum products are destined for the EU, with exports totaling $7.4 billion in 2023.

“My thinking is that the CBAM will hurt the EU very badly. Their infrastructure, their cost of living, their industrial products, their consumer products—will become expensive and their economy will face further distress,” Goyal added.

Meanwhile, the minister dismissed speculation about India supporting Chinese investments in the country, following suggestions in the latest Economic Survey to consider foreign direct investments (FDI) from China. The survey recommended leveraging the China-plus-one strategy to boost exports amidst global shifts.

“The chief economic adviser’s report (latest economic survey) speaks about new ideas. It is not at all binding on the government,” Goyal clarified. “There is no rethinking on supporting Chinese investments in the country.”

The domestic industry, particularly sectors using Chinese plants and equipment, has urged the government to relax FDI restrictions, citing technical and operational challenges due to visa restrictions for skilled Chinese workers. However, experts warn that allowing Chinese firms to establish a significant presence in India could pose risks.

“While Chinese companies investing in India and exporting to Western markets might seem beneficial in the short term, it risks undermining India’s long-term economic security and strategic autonomy,” said Ajay Srivastava, founder of GTRI. “Dependence on Chinese firms for key manufacturing capabilities could expose India to supply chain vulnerabilities and geopolitical risks,” he added.

Delhi High Court All Set to Hear Plea On Rajendra Nagar Coaching Centre Incident Tomorrow

0

The Delhi High Court is expected to hear a petition tomorrow requesting the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the Rajendra Nagar incident that led to the deaths of three UPSC aspirants. The petition was brought before a bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela by advocate Rudra Singh.

Shreya Yadav from Ambedkar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Navin Dalwin from Ernakulam in Kerala tragically lost their lives after the basement of the coaching institute building was inundated following heavy rainfall on July 27. On July 28, the police arrested the owner and coordinator of the coaching center, Rau’s IAS Study Circle, charging them with culpable homicide and other offenses.

The police investigation revealed that the flooding was primarily due to civic authorities’ failure to clear the roadside drains before the monsoon and the lack of proper drainage provisions in the basement, where an illegal library was operating, as reported by Mint on July 29.

The Delhi Police have formed multiple teams to investigate the underlying causes of the incident. Over 35 people, including students and staff, were trapped on July 28 when water began flooding the basement.

According to a Mint report, an MCD official stated that the building’s completion certificate specified that the basement was designated only for parking and storage, yet an illegal library was being operated there.

On July 29, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) established a committee to investigate the incident. This committee will examine the causes, assign responsibility, recommend measures, and propose policy changes to prevent such occurrences in the future.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena had previously announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh each for the families of the deceased civil services aspirants.
