Trump Chooses Tulsi Gabbard for Debate

0

Here’s a rephrased version of the text:

According to a New York Times report, former President Donald Trump is gearing up for his debate with US Vice President Kamala Harris by seeking assistance from former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard to sharpen his strategies and critiques. The report, which cites sources familiar with Trump’s schedule, notes that Gabbard participated in a practice session with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate. The debate between Trump and Harris is set to air on ABC News on September 10.

Gabbard, who left the Democratic Party after her 2020 presidential campaign and has since become a prominent figure among Trump’s supporters, has maintained a friendly relationship with him. At one point, she was even rumored to be considered as his potential running mate. Her involvement in Trump’s debate preparation is partly attributed to her notable performance during a 2019 Democratic presidential primary debate, where she delivered a sharp critique of Harris.

Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for Trump, confirmed Gabbard’s participation in an email, as reported by the New York Times. Leavitt stated that Trump has “proven to be one of the best debaters in political history, as shown by his decisive victory over Joe Biden. He doesn’t require traditional debate preparation but continues to meet with respected policy advisers and effective communicators like Tulsi Gabbard, who successfully dominated Kamala Harris on the debate stage in 2020.”

Despite claiming he doesn’t need to prepare for debates, Trump has reportedly spent more time this year practicing for debates than he did in 2016 or 2020, according to advisers who have worked with him. However, his preparation has not followed traditional methods, as no one played Biden in his sessions before their CNN debate on June 27.

Before his CNN debate with President Biden in June, Trump dedicated significant time to discussing potential topics and questions with his advisers, both in lengthy sessions and during informal discussions on plane trips. During formal practice sessions at Mar-a-Lago, his aides acted as moderators, asking challenging questions, with Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida and other lawmakers, including his eventual running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, engaging with Trump on policy issues.

Biden’s hesitant and disorganized performance during the June debate with Trump eventually led to his withdrawal from the race. Trump’s aides are expected to adopt a similar approach for his upcoming debate with Harris on September 10, according to the New York Times.

Gabbard’s role is particularly notable as she brings several key attributes to Trump’s preparation: she’s a woman, which is significant as Trump faces a female opponent in the general election for the second time; she has policy experience as a former House member; and most crucially for Trump, she has debated Harris before and delivered a scathing critique of her record as a prosecutor, as reported by the New York Times.

Internet Suspended in Rajasthan Amidst Communal Tensions

0

In Udaipur, Rajasthan, internet services were suspended for 24 hours on Friday following communal violence in the city, as reported by HT. Authorities also issued orders banning public gatherings in response to the unrest.

The violence erupted after a mob threw stones and set several cars on fire, according to police reports. To prevent further escalation, markets in areas such as Bapu Bazar, Hathipole, Ghanta Ghar, Chetak Circle, and nearby locations were shut down by evening.

The situation deteriorated when stones were thrown at a shopping mall, causing damage to the glass entrances of several shops, according to PTI. Additionally, hundreds of people gathered outside the government hospital, but police eventually dispersed the crowd.

The violence in Udaipur was triggered by an incident at a government school where a Class 10 student was reportedly attacked with a knife by a classmate. Members of some Hindu organizations gathered at Madhuban in the city to protest the assault, leading to further violence.

Udaipur district collector Arvind Poswal stated that the administration received a complaint about a fight between two students earlier that morning. “The incident occurred in the early hours today. We received information about a fight between two children, in which one child was attacked on his thighs with a knife. The wound was deep, and the child was immediately taken to the hospital,” Poswal was quoted as saying by ANI.

Poswal added, “I have met the child, and his condition is stable now… The person who attacked with a knife has been arrested, and his father has also been taken into custody,” reported ANI.

A meeting was held over the issue, attended by Rajya Sabha MP Chunnilal Garasia, Lok Sabha MP Mannalal Rawat, MLAs Tarachand Jain and Phool Singh Meena, Divisional Commissioner Rajendra Bhatt, Collector Arvind Poswal, SP Yogesh Goyal, and other public representatives.

The Congress party has appointed Tariq Hameed Karra as the President of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, just hours after the Election Commission of India announced the schedule for assembly elections in the Union Territory. Additionally, Tara Chand and Raman Bhalla have been named as the working presidents of the committee.

Karra, who was previously serving as a permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee, replaces Vikar Rasool Wani, the outgoing president of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee. Wani has now been appointed as a Special Invitee to the Congress Working Committee.

According to a statement from the Congress party, “The Congress President has appointed the President and Working Presidents of the Jammu & Kashmir PCC as follows, with immediate effect: PCC President – Tariq Hameed Karra, Working Presidents – Tara Chand and Raman Bhalla. The Congress President has also appointed Vikar Rasool Wani as Special Invitee to the Congress Working Committee, effective immediately. Tariq Hameed Karra has been relieved from his current position as a Permanent Invitee to the Congress Working Committee. The party appreciates the contributions of the outgoing PCC President, Vikar Rasool Wani.”

Karra, who served as the finance minister of the former state during the PDP-Congress coalition government, secured a significant victory in the Lok Sabha election from Srinagar, defeating National Conference’s Dr. Farooq Abdullah by over 40,000 votes, marking Abdullah’s first electoral loss in four decades.

A former leader of the PDP, Karra opposed the BJP-PDP alliance and resigned from both the Lok Sabha and the PDP in 2016. He joined the Congress party in February 2017.

The Assembly elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are scheduled to take place in three phases: the first phase on September 18, the second on September 25, and the third on October 1. The results will be announced on October 4.

The Union Territory has a total of 90 assembly constituencies, including 74 General, nine reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST), and seven for Scheduled Castes (SC).

PM Modi Makes a Call For Release of Hostages in West Asia

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged for the release of hostages and a de-escalation of tensions in West Asia during a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday.

Reaffirming India’s stance, PM Modi emphasized the need for the immediate release of all hostages and the continuation of humanitarian assistance to those affected. He also called for an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.

It’s been 10 months since the Gaza conflict began, with airstrikes, artillery shells, and severe shortages of medicine, food, and clean water devastating one of the world’s most densely populated areas.

On Tuesday, Hamas launched two rockets at Tel Aviv, Israel’s commercial hub, following Israeli airstrikes in Gaza that killed at least 19 Palestinians. This was the first instance since May that Hamas claimed responsibility for rocket attacks on Tel Aviv.

According to reports citing the Israeli military, there were no casualties in Israel from the rockets fired from Gaza; one fell into the sea, and the other failed to reach Israeli territory.

Israel has consistently stated that it takes extensive measures to avoid civilian casualties, accusing Hamas of using civilians as human shields.

Earlier on Monday, the US confirmed that the Gaza ceasefire talks scheduled for Thursday would proceed as planned, with an agreement still considered possible. A media report indicated that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was set to travel on Tuesday for discussions in Qatar, Egypt, and Israel.

The Israeli government announced it would send a delegation to Thursday’s talks to finalize the details of the proposed agreement.

However, Hamas is insisting on a practical plan to implement the proposal presented by US President Joe Biden in May, rather than engaging in further discussions.

Matthew Perry Wanted Desperate Assistance in Final Months

“Misplaced trust led to a tragic end for the vulnerable Matthew Perry, leaving fans devastated by the chilling details of the Friends star’s death, which was caused by a ketamine overdose.

According to recent reports, in the months leading up to his death, Perry was desperately seeking relief from his struggles with depression and addiction.

Initially, Perry was prescribed ketamine under ‘strict supervision’ by his regular doctors, but was later denied further access due to the drug’s risks.

Overwhelmed and hesitant to face his personal battles alone, Perry turned to individuals who were more interested in exploiting him than ensuring his well-being.

Among those implicated in the conspiracy against Perry were his personal assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, and two doctors, Dr. Salvador Plasencia and Dr. Mark Chavez.

Iwamasa, who was supposed to care for Perry, ultimately facilitated his access to the dangerous substance. Allegedly, on the day of Perry’s death, Iwamasa administered multiple, reportedly 27, ketamine injections, fully aware of the severe risks.

According to an AP report, Iwamasa obtained ketamine from Erik Fleming, who has pleaded guilty to sourcing the drug from ‘Ketamine Queen’ Jasveen Sangha and delivering it to Iwamasa. Fleming supplied 50 vials of ketamine, including 25, in the four days leading up to Perry’s death.

The Department of Justice revealed that Iwamasa, who had no medical training, admitted to administering multiple ketamine injections to Perry, including on the day of his death. The updated criminal complaint shows that Iwamasa, 59, conspired with Sangha, Fleming, and others to illegally obtain and distribute ketamine.

Perry’s doctors, Plasencia and Chavez, betrayed their roles as caregivers. Plasencia has been charged with multiple counts of distributing ketamine and even falsified records after Perry’s death.

In court, Assistant U.S. Attorney Ian V. Yanniello described Plasencia as ‘essentially acting as a street corner drug dealer.’

The doctor viewed Perry as a ‘cash cow’ rather than a patient in need. According to media reports, Plasencia even joked in a text message about how much Perry might pay for the drug, showing a blatant disregard for the star’s life.

Chavez, who acknowledged his involvement in supplying the drug, also played a significant role in this tragic series of events. Prosecutors allege that Chavez funneled ketamine to Plasencia, obtaining some of it from a wholesale distributor through fraudulent prescriptions.”

Calcutta HC Smashes Mamata Banerjee Govt Over RG Kar Vandalism

On Friday, the Calcutta High Court characterized the mob violence at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital as a total breakdown of state machinery in West Bengal. The court ordered both the police and hospital authorities to submit affidavits outlining the details of the incident.

Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, who led a division bench, expressed astonishment that police intelligence failed to detect the gathering of 7,000 people at the hospital early Thursday morning, as stated by the state’s lawyer.

“This is a complete failure of state machinery. There was a police force present at the location. They couldn’t even protect their own personnel? This is a dire situation. How are doctors supposed to work without fear?” the Chief Justice remarked, sharply criticizing the West Bengal government.

“You invoke section 144 of the CrPC at the drop of a hat. With so much chaos, you should have secured the area,” he added.

“7,000 people don’t just appear out of nowhere,” he noted.

The court ordered the police and hospital administration to file separate affidavits detailing the true state of affairs before the next hearing on August 21. The bench, which also included Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya, asked the police to document the events leading to the vandalism.

Additionally, the CBI’s investigating team was instructed to submit an interim report on their progress regarding the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor on August 9, which sparked a work stoppage by junior doctors in state-run hospitals.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused opposition parties of orchestrating the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. She stated, “The police are investigating the incident. I have no issues with students or protesting doctors, but certain political parties are attempting to create unrest. The videos will reveal what actually happened.”

Mamata Banerjee criticized political elements, particularly the Left and the BJP, accusing them of inciting trouble. She claimed that around midnight, approximately 40 individuals pretending to be protesters entered the hospital, vandalized the emergency department, nursing station, and medicine store, damaged CCTV cameras, and ransacked a stage where junior doctors had been protesting since August 9, following the alleged rape and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee and demanding workplace security.

India’s top wrestler, Vinesh Phogat, is scheduled to return home on August 17, according to her teammate Bajrang Punia. Following a disappointing campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympics, she will arrive at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport at 10:00 am on Saturday.

Bajrang Punia shared the news on X (formerly Twitter) in Hindi, stating, “Vinesh Phogat will arrive at the airport at 10:00 am on August 17.”

The 29-year-old wrestler was disqualified from her final bout in the 50 kg Freestyle Women Wrestling event for exceeding the weight limit by 100 grams. Additionally, she was denied a silver medal, prompting her to approach the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on August 7.

On Independence Day, Vinesh Phogat posted a cryptic message after the CAS confirmed the dismissal of her appeal for the Olympic silver medal.

The verdict, initially expected on Tuesday night, was postponed to August 16. However, the court issued a statement on Wednesday, declaring, “The application filed by Vinesh Phogat on August 7 has been dismissed.”

Following the court’s decision, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) expressed its intent to “explore further legal options.”

A day after the verdict, Vinesh Phogat shared an Instagram post showing her lying on a mat with her hands covering her eyes, hinting at emotional distress over the outcome.

The IOA also released a statement expressing disappointment with the Sole Arbitrator’s decision at the CAS to dismiss Phogat’s application. The statement reads, “In light of the CAS order, the IOA continues to stand in full support of Phogat and is exploring further legal options,” as reported by ANI.

The IOA emphasized its commitment to advocating for justice and fairness in sports, ensuring the rights and dignity of athletes are upheld. The statement concluded, “We appreciate the continued support and understanding of our stakeholders, athletes, and the public.”

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet confirmed Navin’s new role in a statement dated August 14. His appointment as Director of Enforcement will take effect from the date he assumes charge and will last for two years or until further notice.

According to the DoPT statement, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri Rahul Navin, IRS (IT:93074), Special Director, ED as Director of Enforcement in the Directorate of Enforcement for a period of two years with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the post, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

Prior to this, the 57-year-old served as the Special Director of ED since November 2019 and took on the role of acting Director following Sanjay Kumar Mishra’s departure on September 15, 2023.

Mishra, who was initially appointed as ED Director in 2018 for a two-year term, had his tenure extended multiple times through procedural changes. He resigned in September 2023 following a Supreme Court-mandated deadline.

Navin is recognized as an expert in international taxation. During his acting tenure, he oversaw high-profile cases, including the arrests of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren in separate money laundering investigations.

The Directorate of Enforcement is a multi-disciplinary agency responsible for investigating financial crimes under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act (FEOA), as well as civil provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

CBI All Set to Probe Kolkata Rape-Murder Case

0

Following the Kolkata High Court’s directive, the CBI assumed control of the investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at a state-run medical college in Kolkata on Tuesday. Here are the top ten updates:

Upon taking over the case, the CBI promptly completed all necessary formalities as per the High Court’s order, which mandated the state police to transfer the case documents to the central agency. In accordance with procedure, the CBI has re-registered the FIR initially filed by the Kolkata Police. When the CBI takes over a case from state police, it starts by registering the original FIR as its own case, PTI reported.”

“A team of CBI officials from Delhi, accompanied by forensic scientists and medical experts, is scheduled to visit Kolkata on Wednesday. The experts are expected to review the autopsy report and any associated videography, as well as visit the crime scene where the woman’s body was discovered. The agency may also inspect the doctor’s residence and seek court approval for custody of the accused arrested by Kolkata Police on Saturday.

On Tuesday, the West Bengal Doctors’ Forum wrote to the CBI, alleging that evidence tampering might be occurring due to ongoing construction work near the crime scene at a Kolkata hospital. The body of the post-graduate trainee doctor, who had severe injuries, was found on Friday in the seminar hall of the chest department at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The preliminary autopsy indicated she had been violently sexually assaulted.

The letter, signed by Dr. Koushik Chaki and Dr. Sanjoy Holme Chowdhury, expressed concerns about the impact of the construction work on the investigation: ‘We have come across reports of sudden civil reconstruction works in and around the scene of crime at the same institution. We are extremely apprehensive about the motive behind such an effort and we think that this might hamper the investigation by tampering with important evidence.’

On Tuesday, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose directed vice-chancellors of state universities to enhance campus security. During a virtual meeting with approximately 30 vice-chancellors, Bose expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of the case by the Kolkata Police and emphasized the need for increased protection for female students, as well as teaching and non-teaching staff. The governor’s instructions came after a critical review of the incident and the police’s response.”
