Pakistan Situation Tense as Imran Khan’s PTI Defies Rally Ban

0

Tensions rose in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital, on Thursday, August 22, as the party of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan vowed to proceed with its planned rally despite government opposition. On Wednesday, Islamabad Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa revoked the NOC (No Objection Certificate) granted to the party, citing security concerns.

“The agencies highlighted the past conduct and track record of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), indicating that a serious law and order situation could arise,” reported news agency PTI, referencing the official order.

Earlier, on July 31, the deputy commissioner had issued the NOC allowing Imran Khan’s PTI to hold the rally. However, the order was withdrawn due to the current tense situation, with authorities deeming it unsafe to proceed. Despite the government’s refusal, PTI’s insistence on holding a power show has heightened widespread apprehension. According to Omar Ayub Khan, the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, a “peaceful” rally is set to take place today in the Tarnol area at around 4:00 pm.

The rally will be led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, who stated, “I am sending a clear message that the people of KP must arrive by 3 pm… We will hold the rally regardless. This will be PTI’s first rally in the city since the February 8 general elections.”

In response to fears of potential violence, Islamabad authorities ordered the closure of all private and government schools within the federal region’s jurisdiction.

Following months of political turmoil involving cases against its leader and other members, PTI decided to move forward with its rally plans after the government abruptly revoked its NOC.

Simultaneously, the Punjab Home Department imposed Section 144 across the province, citing the “prevailing law and order situation and security threats.” This order, effective from Thursday to Saturday, bans gatherings, sit-ins, rallies, demonstrations, protests, and similar activities across the state.

The Home Department’s notice further stated, “The ban has been implemented due to the threat of terrorism and to protect human lives and property. Authorities throughout Punjab will ensure strict enforcement of this directive.”

Madhya Pradesh School Faces Criticism After Using Pakistan Flag

A pre-school in Madhya Pradesh faced criticism after allegedly using Pakistan’s national flag during an Independence Day performance on August 15. The controversy erupted when the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) protested, demanding action against the private school in Ratlam after a video of the performance went viral on social media, according to PTI.

On Wednesday, an official informed PTI that an investigation had been launched into the incident. ABVP members staged protests, blocked a road, and submitted a memorandum to the district collector, urging action against the school, as reported by PTI.

District Collector Rajesh Batham told PTI that the ABVP’s memorandum would be forwarded to the police for further investigation, and legal action would be taken based on the findings.

The viral video drew the attention of ABVP activists, who opposed the pre-school’s Independence Day program. ABVP’s Ratlam district convenor, Satyam Dave, stated that the members protested and blocked a road in response to the video, which purportedly showed the waving of the Pakistani flag.

In response to the controversy, Deepak Pant, Director of Time Kids Pre-School, explained that the act was part of a drama on the freedom struggle, which included a depiction of the Partition. He clarified that the video circulating on social media showed a scene from the drama where both Indian and Pakistani flags were used to represent the Partition and freedom struggle. Pant emphasized that the video was shared out of context.

Sitharaman Asks Tax Department to Simplify Tax for Citizens

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman urged the Income Tax Department on Wednesday to simplify the tax process, improve taxpayer services, ensure certainty, and reduce litigation. Speaking at the department’s 165th anniversary, Sitharaman highlighted the importance of adopting a more taxpayer-friendly approach.

“We should genuinely strive for simpler ways of communicating with our taxpayers. Grievance redressal remains a significant issue,” Sitharaman stated.

She emphasized that taxpayer compliance is closely linked to the system’s ease and clarity. “Taxpayers are more likely to comply when they experience the ease, flexibility, and simplicity offered, as seen in the new tax regime,” she noted.

Sitharaman also called for a substantial simplification of the language used in tax notices and correspondence, stressing, “The language in tax notices and letters should not be overly technical or convoluted.”

She further emphasized that enforcement actions by the Income Tax Department should be a last resort and proportionate to the situation.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to tax simplification, enhanced taxpayer services, tax certainty, and reduced litigation, Sitharaman announced, “Within six months, parts of the tax code or the Income Tax Act will be clearly written in simple, easy-to-understand language.”

She added that a committee within the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is actively working on this initiative, in line with the prime minister’s vision of a seamless and faceless tax administration.

European Traveler in Thailand Suspected With Clade 1 Mpox

Thailand reported its first suspected case of the new, more dangerous strain of mpox on Wednesday, which the World Health Organization has identified as a global public health emergency.

The patient, a European who recently traveled to Thailand from an African country, was confirmed to have mpox, according to Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, head of Thailand’s Department of Disease Control, in a statement to AFP.

Laboratory tests are currently being conducted to confirm the specific strain, with officials suspecting it to be from Clade 1. The patient has been quarantined in a hospital.

“We’ve confirmed that the patient has mpox, and it’s definitely not Clade 2,” Thongchai told AFP. “We strongly believe it is the Clade 1 variant, but we need to wait for the final lab results, which will take two more days.”

Mpox cases and fatalities have surged across Africa, with outbreaks reported since July in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda.

The disease, caused by a virus transmitted from infected animals and spread through close physical contact among humans, leads to symptoms like fever, muscle aches, and large, boil-like skin lesions.

While mpox has been known for decades, a newly identified, more lethal, and more transmissible strain known as Clade 1b has been driving the recent spike in cases. Clade 1b has a mortality rate of about 3.6 percent, with children being particularly vulnerable, according to WHO data.

Previously known as monkeypox, the virus was first discovered in 1958 in monkeys used for research in Denmark.

This year, the Democratic Republic of Congo has reported over 16,000 cases and 500 deaths from mpox.

Health Ministry Calls For Enhanced Security in Central Hospitals After Kolkata Tragedy

0

Following the rape and murder of a doctor at a Kolkata hospital where she worked, the Union Health Ministry has instructed all central government hospitals and medical colleges to strengthen security measures to ensure a safe environment for healthcare professionals.

The ministry has directed hospitals to display boards highlighting the legal penalties under relevant state laws, install high-resolution CCTV cameras, set up a control room for quick emergency responses, and closely monitor entry and exit points to prevent violence against doctors.

‘Hospitals must deploy an adequate number of trained security guards for proper monitoring, patrolling, and surveillance of the premises. Only one or two attendants should be allowed with a patient at any time, including during visiting hours, managed through an attendant pass system,’ the ministry stated.

To further enhance safety, the ministry stressed the importance of well-lit areas within hospital campuses, especially in places where female healthcare staff are on duty, as well as in parking lots and entryways. Hospitals are also encouraged to develop comprehensive emergency response plans, conduct regular mock drills, and train staff to identify and respond to security threats.

The ministry also directed hospital administrations to coordinate closely with local police and emergency services to ensure a unified response to incidents.

‘Hospitals should provide well-secured duty rooms with basic amenities for female healthcare professionals. Night shifts should involve more than one female staff member, who should be escorted within the premises and provided with secure transport when needed,’ the statement added.

The Kolkata incident, which has triggered a nationwide outcry, is being compared to the 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder that led to stricter laws against sexual assault in India.

Last week, citing recent incidents of violence, B. Srinivas, Secretary of the National Medical Commission (NMC), urged all medical colleges to develop policies ensuring a safe workplace environment for their staff, including faculty, students, and resident doctors.”

Rajkumar Rao Saw Ghosts While Shooting For Stree

Rajkumar Rao may have encountered supernatural forces while filming Stree and its sequel. In a recent interview, the actor shared a peculiar experience involving a photograph taken during a night shoot for the 2018 film when asked about any ghostly encounters.

Reports suggest that the cast and crew had been cautioned against using a certain abandoned street in the town of Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh, where filming was taking place. Despite the warnings from locals, the team chose to shoot at the ‘haunted’ location as it was ideal for the scene.

‘We were shooting a night scene where I had to walk down the lane… and someone was randomly taking photos. After the shoot, he showed me one of the pictures. I was puzzled by it until he zoomed in. There was an old wall with a small balcony, and within it, you could clearly see a shadowy figure sitting there at 2:45 am, with no face,’ Rajkumar recalled.

Director Amar Kaushik had previously mentioned the numerous challenges faced during that particular shoot. According to earlier reports, the crew experienced unexpected technical issues throughout the night, such as flickering lights and light bulbs suddenly shattering.

Since its release on August 15, the Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao-starrer has remained a favorite among audiences, earning ₹204 crore in its first four days. Stree 2 achieved an impressive global gross of ₹283 crore during its opening weekend.

Stree 2—a direct sequel to the 2018 film—is part of the ambitious horror-comedy universe created by producer Dinesh Vijan, which also includes films like Bhediya and Munjya. The movie follows Rao and his friends, along with the mysterious woman played by Kapoor, as they confront a new terror: a ghost with only a head, fittingly named Sarkata.”

Centre Requests UPSC Chairperson to Cancel Advertisement For Lateral Entries

0

Union Minister Jitendra Singh announced on Tuesday that the advertisement for lateral entry positions, issued by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), has been cancelled following directives from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The UPSC had recently advertised 45 positions—10 for joint secretaries and 35 for directors/deputy secretaries—to be filled through lateral entry on a contractual basis. This initiative aims to recruit specialists, including those from the private sector, into government roles.

‘While most lateral entries prior to 2014 were made on an ad-hoc basis, often leading to accusations of favoritism, our government has strived to ensure the process is institutionally driven, transparent, and open,’ the letter stated.

The letter further emphasized that the Prime Minister believes the lateral entry process must adhere to the principles of equity and social justice outlined in the Constitution, especially regarding reservation provisions.

This decision follows concerns raised by BJP ally and Union Minister Chirag Paswan, who, on Monday, expressed worries about appointments to government positions being made without reservation. The controversy over lateral entry escalated with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accusing the move of being an ‘attack’ on Dalits, OBCs, and Adivasis.

In response, the Centre accused the Congress of spreading misinformation about the largest lateral recruitment in the bureaucracy, asserting that the initiative would not affect SC/ST recruitment in the all-India services.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw pointed out that lateral entry has been in practice since the 1970s during Congress-led governments, citing former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Montek Singh Ahluwalia as prominent examples of past initiatives.

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal criticized Rahul Gandhi’s claims that the government was bypassing the reservation system, reminding him that Manmohan Singh was appointed finance secretary in 1976 through lateral entry. ‘You initiated lateral entry; Prime Minister Modi has made it methodical,’ he told PTI.

Lateral entry in bureaucracy refers to the recruitment of individuals from outside the traditional government service cadres, such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), for mid and senior-level positions in government departments.”

Donald Trump Hints at Cabinet Position for Elon Musk

0

Former US President Donald Trump has shown interest in involving Tesla CEO Elon Musk in a possible cabinet or advisory role if he wins the upcoming US Presidential Elections.

During a recent interview after a campaign event in York, Pennsylvania, Trump, who is now a Republican presidential candidate, discussed his views on electric vehicle (EV) tax credits and potential cabinet selections.

When questioned about the current $7,500 tax credit for EV purchases, Trump voiced skepticism, saying, “Tax credits and tax incentives are not generally a very good thing.” He suggested that he might reevaluate this policy if he were to be elected.

Trump also spoke highly of Elon Musk, who recently endorsed him. When asked whether he would consider Musk for an advisory or cabinet position, Trump responded positively: “He’s a very smart guy. I certainly would, if he would do it. He’s a brilliant guy.”

The former president also touched on possible changes to auto industry policies, including strategies to limit vehicle exports from Mexico and prevent Chinese automakers from setting up plants there for the U.S. market. He explained, “If you put tariffs on those cars, they’re going to make them here. It’s very simple. It’s not complicated. If you tell Mexico, ‘Look, you’re stealing our car industry,’ which they’re doing now.”

Trump also expressed support for foreign automakers building vehicles in the United States, stating, “We’re going to offer incentives, and if China and other countries want to come here and sell cars, they’ll need to build plants here and hire our workers. We will produce our own cars. I want us to make our own cars.”

Regarding TikTok, Trump acknowledged the challenges of banning the app, saying, “It’s very hard to ban something like that because you’re talking about free speech. There are many different factors involved in that equation, but TikTok has treated me very well.”

ODP Services See 90% Decline at AIIMS Delhi

0

Amid a strike organized by doctors to protest the rape and murder of a female postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, AIIMS Delhi has reported a significant decrease in patient services. Admissions, outpatient departments (OPDs), and operation theatres (OTs) have seen more than a 90% reduction in activity.

Despite the strike, emergency services and intensive care units (ICUs) are functioning normally, according to an official report from the medical superintendent of AIIMS Delhi.

However, the strike has severely impacted OPDs, admissions, operation theatres, radiological investigations, and nuclear medicine services, with a reduction of over 90%. Laboratory services have also been affected by more than 80%.

Following the nationwide strike called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in response to the RG Kar Medical College incident, doctors at AIIMS in Delhi staged a protest march on Saturday, carrying posters and chanting slogans of “We want justice.”

IMA’s national president, Dr. Asokan, stated on Saturday that it is time for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the case of the trainee doctor’s rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. He also mentioned that the association would be writing to the prime minister regarding the issue.

While emergency services and casualty departments will continue to operate, the IMA announced that OPDs and elective surgeries would be suspended from 6 a.m. on Saturday until 6 a.m. on Sunday, August 18, 2024.

The work stoppage has affected thousands of patients across India, with protests — primarily led by women — intensifying in recent days to demand a safer working environment for medical professionals.

The rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9 sparked nationwide protests within the medical community. A police volunteer working at the hospital has been detained in connection with the crime, but the victim’s family alleges it was a gang rape involving multiple individuals.

NCW Discovers Big Breakthrough in Kolkata Rape Case

0

Kolkata Doctor Rape Case: The National Commission for Women (NCW), in its preliminary investigation report, has highlighted serious lapses in security, infrastructure, and the handling of the investigation surrounding the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. According to the NCW’s statement, unexpected renovations at the alleged crime scene could have potentially compromised evidence.

These findings were released after a two-member NCW inquiry committee conducted an investigation into the incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

In their statement, the NCW reported that no security guards were present during the incident, and security measures for on-call interns, doctors, and nurses during night shifts were found to be inadequate.

The NCW further revealed that the hospital lacks basic facilities for female doctors and nurses, such as well-maintained washrooms, proper security measures, and adequate lighting. They also noted that the former Principal, who resigned following the incident, has not been fully questioned. The Inquiry Committee is calling for a thorough and swift investigation.

The statement continued, “There is insufficient protection for female interns, nurses, and doctors on duty. The ongoing renovations at the location where the trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered raise concerns about possible evidence tampering.”

Additionally, the NCW emphasized that “The crime scene should have been immediately sealed by the police.”

The trainee doctor, aged 31, was discovered dead, reportedly half-naked, in the seminar hall of Kolkata’s RG Kar College and Hospital on August 9. Autopsy reports and police findings suggest that she was raped and murdered.

Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has initiated a nationwide strike. The 24-hour strike, which began at 6 a.m. today, is a protest with five demands presented to the government. As part of the strike, non-emergency and OPD services will be suspended until August 18.
