BJP Stays Away From Kangana Ranaut’s Controversial Statements

0

On Monday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized its Lok Sabha MP and film actor Kangana Ranaut for her controversial remarks about the farmers’ protest. The party stated that it disagrees with her comments and emphasized that she is neither allowed nor authorized to speak on the party’s policy issues.

“The Bharatiya Janata Party has instructed Kangana Ranaut not to make such statements in the future,” the ruling party said in a statement, as her remarks threatened to reignite an issue that the party has worked hard to manage over the years.

Kangana, who represents Mandi in the Lok Sabha, had posted a video clip from her interview with Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar, in which she suggested that India could have faced a “Bangladesh-like situation” if not for its strong leadership. She also claimed that “bodies were hanging and rapes were taking place” during the farmers’ protest against the now-repealed three farm laws, and alleged that China and the United States were involved in a “conspiracy.”

The BJP responded, “The statement made by BJP MP Kangana Ranaut regarding the farmers’ agitation does not reflect the party’s views. The Bharatiya Janata Party expresses its disagreement with Kangana Ranaut’s statement.”

This is not the first time the actress has made controversial remarks about the farmers’ protest. Here are some of her previous statements that have sparked significant controversy:

On Punjab:
Kangana was reportedly slapped by a CISF woman constable at Chandigarh airport following her repeated statements on the farmers’ protest. After the incident, she claimed to be “concerned about the rising terrorism and extremism in Punjab.”

On Rihanna and Greta Thunberg:
Kangana has been outspoken in her criticism of the farmers’ protests, alleging that they were influenced by foreign entities. Between 2020 and 2021, several international figures, including singer Rihanna, expressed support for the protests. In response to Rihanna’s tweet, Kangana accused the Barbadian singer, whose net worth is estimated at $600 million (₹4300 crore, according to Forbes), of charging “at least ₹100 crore” for her tweet.

Kangana wrote, “She is a singer like Sunidhi Chauhan or Neha Kakkar. She can shake her bum cheeks and expose her a** crack right into the camera lens while singing. Yeah, that’s all. Nothing else.”

She also criticized Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg for supporting the farmers’ agitation, dismissing her as a “spoilt brat” and alleging she was being manipulated by the left-lobby to skip her education.

PM Modi Holds Conversations With Vladimir Putin

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, just days after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.

“Had a conversation with President Putin today. We discussed ways to further enhance our Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership and exchanged views on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, including my observations from the recent visit to Ukraine. Reaffirmed India’s commitment to support a swift, lasting, and peaceful resolution of the conflict,” Modi posted on X.

This phone call comes shortly after his meeting with Zelenskyy amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. During his meeting with the Ukrainian president, Modi emphasized that India is not “neutral” and consistently sides with peace.

“We (India) are not neutral. From the very beginning, we have taken a stand. We have chosen the side of peace. We come from the land of Buddha, where there is no room for war,” Modi stated.

“I want to assure you and the entire global community that India is committed to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, which is of utmost importance to us,” he added.

Last month, Modi visited Moscow and met with Putin, reiterating India’s position on the Ukraine conflict. He urged the Russian president to return to dialogue and diplomacy, emphasizing that “no solution can be found on the battlefield.”

The Russia-Ukraine war has now entered its second year, with no signs of resolution in sight. On Monday, Russia launched drone and missile attacks across Ukraine, resulting in two fatalities and causing fires on the outskirts of Kyiv, according to an AP report.

In Kryvyi Rih, a mining and industrial city in southern Ukraine, two people were killed in a strike on a residential building, reported Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the city’s military administration.

In the Kyiv region, which faced power outages following Monday’s assault, five air alerts were sounded overnight. The regional administration stated that air defenses successfully intercepted all drones and missiles fired by Russia, but debris caused forest fires.

Kerala Police Files FIR Against Ranjith

0

On Monday, the Kerala Police filed an FIR against filmmaker Ranjith, marking the first such case amid a series of recent sexual harassment allegations against male actors in the Malayalam film industry (Mollywood). This case was initiated after Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra lodged a complaint with the Kochi city police commissioner.

Mitra’s complaint, submitted via email, accused Ranjith of inappropriate and sexually motivated touching during a meeting for the film “Paleri Manikyam” in 2009. Kochi Police Commissioner S Syamsundar confirmed that a case under IPC Section 354 (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) has been filed, according to PTI.

Mitra alleged that Ranjith made advances and behaved inappropriately while they were discussing a script. She claimed that after the incident, she declined to participate in the project and returned to Kolkata. She suggested that Ranjith’s influence might have deterred other actresses from speaking out about similar experiences. Ranjith has denied the allegations, claiming he is the “real victim” and has since resigned as chairman of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy to protect the Left government’s reputation.

The fallout from the Justice K Hema Committee report on harassment in the Malayalam film industry has led to more female actors coming forward with troubling stories of abuse by their male colleagues. Actress Revathy Sampath accused veteran actor Siddique of mental and physical assault, alleging the abuse occurred when she was 21. She described severe trauma affecting her professional life and criticized Siddique’s behavior during the incident.

Following these allegations, Siddique resigned as general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) and filed a counter-complaint against Revathy with the Kerala police. Meanwhile, actress Minu Muneer accused several prominent actors, including M Mukesh, Jayasurya, Maniyanpilla Raju, and Idavela Babu, of sexual abuse in a Facebook post. She detailed incidents of physical and verbal abuse during a 2013 film project, claiming the situation became unbearable despite her attempts to continue working.

Additionally, another junior artist has accused actor Baburaj, known for his roles as a villain, of sexual assault. Baburaj, however, denied the claims, suggesting that these accusations were part of a plot by certain individuals in the film industry to block his appointment as the general secretary of AMMA, replacing Siddique.

Opposition parties have criticized the Kerala government for the numerous sexual assault allegations against actors, accusing it of “protecting the predators.” Several opposition leaders have also demanded the resignations of Ranjith and Siddique in protest. In response to mounting pressure, Kerala’s Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, announced the formation of a seven-member special investigation team on Sunday to investigate the sexual assault allegations against actors.

Government to Come up With New Rules to Clean up Contaminated Sites

0

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has proposed new rules to address the issue of land contamination by hazardous substances.

The proposed ‘Remediation of Contaminated Sites Rules, 2024’ aims to fill the existing gaps in the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the various schedules of the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management & Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016, and the Public Liability Insurance Act, 1991, according to a draft notification released on August 21.

These new rules were published in The Gazette of India on Thursday and are set to take effect after 60 days.

The National Environment Policy, 2006, identifies industrial and municipal waste as significant sources of pollution and highlights the challenges in implementing remediation measures for cleaning up toxic and hazardous waste, especially in industrial zones and abandoned mining sites.

The notification states that several probable and confirmed contaminated sites have already been identified, and there is a need for the remediation of all confirmed contaminated sites under the Environment (Protection) Rules, 1986.

If hazardous substances are found mixed with mining waste, bio-medical waste, or municipal solid waste at any location and the contamination levels exceed the specified thresholds, those sites will require remediation under the new rules.

However, these rules will not apply to sites contaminated by radioactive waste, as governed by the Atomic Energy Act, 1962, the rehabilitation of abandoned mines, contamination from mining waste, environmental damage from mining as per the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2015, and oil spills covered by the Merchant Shipping Act of 1958, the Marine Insurance Act of 1963, and the Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Pollution of the Sea by Oil) Rules, 1974, according to the notification.

Trump Threatens to Give Tariffs on Countries That Don’t Accept Migrants

0

Former President Donald Trump has threatened to impose hefty tariffs on countries that refuse to accept deported migrants, signaling a potential overlap between his immigration and trade policies if he returns to the White House.

“If the countries don’t accept them back, we stop trading with those countries and impose large tariffs,” Trump stated on Thursday during an event at Montezuma Pass, Arizona.

Immigration continues to be a central theme of Trump’s reelection campaign. He has vowed to complete the construction of a border wall and to initiate the largest deportation operation in U.S. history. Polls suggest that most Americans favor limiting immigration.

Additionally, Trump has made imposing substantial tariffs on both adversaries and allies a focal point of his economic strategy. He has even proposed raising sufficient revenue through import tariffs to significantly lower income taxes, a major shift in how the U.S. finances its government, which could lead to widespread increases in consumer prices.

Trump visited the U.S.-Mexico border on Thursday, intensifying his criticism of Vice President Kamala Harris’ management of illegal immigration. This visit is part of his effort to win back Arizona, a state he narrowly lost by just over 10,000 votes in 2020.

This marked his first trip to the border since February and coincided with Harris’ keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, a calculated move to divert attention from her as she prepares for a significant political speech.

Trump has been on a week-long tour of swing states, trying to regain momentum after losing ground in recent weeks following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race.

Anand Mahindra Praises Kamala Harris

Ahead of the U.S. Presidential election in November, Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, praised U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and her speech as she accepted her party’s nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Harris is the second woman to be nominated by the Democratic Party, following former First Lady Hillary Clinton.

Mahindra shared a photograph from The New York Times taken at Harris’s Chicago event, calling it an “amazing photograph” that captures the essence of Harris’s campaign—Hope, Aspiration, and Dreams. The image features a young girl looking up at Harris, symbolizing inspiration.

Mahindra remarked that the 75 days remaining until the election feel like an eternity in the context of a political campaign, noting the race is tight and the outcome uncertain. He highlighted that what we are witnessing is a remarkable transformation of perception and image in just a month—a phenomenon that will be studied and analyzed by psychologists, academics, and strategists for years, regardless of whether Harris wins or loses.

Reflecting on Harris’s acceptance speech in Chicago, Mahindra described it as a “tour de force,” showcasing her strength, skill, and ingenuity in terms of optics, content, and delivery. He emphasized that a powerful speech requires a clear, defining goal, which Harris achieved by both reiterating and boldly redefining the American Dream.

Mahindra encouraged students of public speaking and communication to watch Harris’s speech, describing it as a valuable learning experience. Discussing Harris’s unexpected rise to the top of the Democratic ticket following President Joe Biden’s decision to exit the race in July, Harris, 59, remarked, “America, the path that led me here in recent weeks was no doubt unexpected. But I’m no stranger to unlikely journeys.”

Modi Meets Ukraine’s President Weeks After Putin

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in war-torn Ukraine on Friday, just weeks after his visit to Russia for a bilateral summit. This visit takes place at a critical moment in the conflict and is particularly important for Western-backed Kyiv as it seeks to gain support from countries in the Global South. Modi had previously expressed his intention to discuss “perspectives on peaceful resolution of the ongoing Ukraine conflict” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

A recent Bloomberg report indicated that Modi has agreed to convey messages between Putin and Zelensky, although he will not serve as a formal mediator. India has consistently emphasized the need for peace through “dialogue and diplomacy” and advocates for a “human-centric” approach.

Modi’s visit comes shortly after his trip to Moscow for a bilateral summit with Vladimir Putin, which occurred even as Russian missiles were striking various locations in Ukraine, resulting in numerous casualties. Zelensky had described this interaction as “a huge disappointment and a devastating blow to peace efforts,” criticizing Modi for his warm embrace of Putin.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that “India has substantial and independent ties with both Russia and Ukraine, and these relationships stand on their own. This is not a zero-sum game. The Prime Minister has also visited Russia, where many ideas were discussed, and he has met President Zelensky on a few occasions over the past year. They are set to meet again in Ukraine,” the MEA stated earlier this week.

CBI Gets Approval for Polygraph Test Ex-Principal Sandip Ghosh

0

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday sought permission from the Kolkata High Court to conduct a polygraph test on Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, along with four other doctors. This request came after discrepancies were found in their statements during the ongoing investigation.

A senior CBI official confirmed that they have approached the court for approval, and the polygraph tests will be conducted once permission is granted.

“We plan to compare their statements with the results of the polygraph test to verify the accuracy of the information they provided,” the official added.

The official emphasized that the polygraph test would help in verifying the doctors’ statements and cross-checking the evidence gathered.

Dr. Ghosh was previously questioned about his actions in response to the incident, the timing of his notifications to the police and the victim’s parents, and other related aspects.

Meanwhile, following an appeal from the Supreme Court, healthcare professionals at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi called off their 11-day strike and resumed their duties on Thursday.

The Resident Doctors Association (RDA) released a statement announcing the decision: “In the interest of the nation and in the spirit of public service, the RDA, AIIMS, New Delhi, has decided to call off the 11-day strike. This decision follows the appeal and direction of the Supreme Court. We express our sincere gratitude to the Supreme Court for addressing the RG Kar Medical College incident and highlighting the broader issue of safety and security for healthcare workers across the country.”

Earlier, during the initial hearing of the Kolkata doctor rape-murder case, the Supreme Court urged health professionals to return to work and assured them that no adverse actions would be taken against them once they resumed their duties.

This development follows the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, which sparked nationwide protests. In response, the Supreme Court took up the case suo motu and directed a task force to submit an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months.

The court also instructed the CBI to submit a status report on the investigation into the rape case and requested the West Bengal government to file a status report on the mob attack incident at RG Kar Hospital on August 15.

The incident occurred on August 9, when a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, leading to widespread strikes and protests by the medical community. (ANI)

Sri Lanka Court Finds President Ramil Wickremesinghe Guilty

0

Sri Lanka’s top court on Thursday found President Ranil Wickremesinghe guilty of “unlawful conduct” for indefinitely postponing local elections, which were widely regarded as an unofficial referendum on his economic management.

Although Wickremesinghe enjoys immunity while in office, the ruling has no immediate legal implications. However, economic concerns are expected to dominate the upcoming presidential elections next month.

The local elections, originally scheduled for March 2023, were postponed, making the September 21 presidential election the first since Wickremesinghe assumed office two years ago. He stepped into the role after widespread protests, fueled by an unprecedented financial crisis, led to the ousting of former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa in July 2022.

Wickremesinghe, 75, is seeking re-election for a five-year term next month, facing stiff competition from rival candidates.

On Thursday, a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, unanimously ruled that Wickremesinghe had failed to allocate funds for the local elections in March 2023, despite a previous court order to do so.

Wickremesinghe’s government argued that the funds were needed to pay public servants and pensions, but the court found that his “arbitrary and unlawful conduct” in blocking the elections had violated constitutional rights.

Speaking to his supporters near Colombo on Thursday, Wickremesinghe defended his decision to delay the local council elections last year, stating that he was “not sorry” as the time was spent ensuring the right to life and committed to protecting both the right to vote and live, according to his campaign office.

Anand Mahindra Praises ‘Humble Tractors’ after Landslides

0

Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, highlighted the “underrated capabilities” of tractors, noting that they can navigate rough terrain and perform as well as SUVs. Both types of vehicles played a crucial role in rescuing people during the Wayanad landslides.

On Thursday, Anand Mahindra took to the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to express his thoughts: “Humble tractors don’t receive as much recognition as SUVs for the work they both do during disasters.”

He continued, “That’s why I’m pleased to see this news from the Wayanad floods. Our team works diligently to create products, knowing they might not only be used for plowing fields but also, at times, for saving lives.”

The Wayanad landslides, which occurred on July 30 this year due to relentless rainfall, resulted in the loss of over 400 lives and displaced many others. It was one of India’s most devastating natural disasters this year, severely affecting the areas of Chooralmala, Muthanga, and Mundakkai in Kerala’s Wayanad district.

Anand Mahindra’s post garnered strong reactions from netizens. One user praised the Mahindra team, saying, “Your tractors and the hard work of your team during the Wayanad floods have once again shown that their value extends beyond plowing fields—they’re also crucial in saving lives during emergencies.”

Another user commented, “Using those massive tractors for disaster management could be a game-changer. They’re built like tanks and can handle situations where regular vehicles fail.” A third user remarked, “Mahindra Tractors are the unsung heroes, stepping up when it matters most.”

A fourth user added, “People would have never thought that a small Mahindra tractor would play such a vital role in remote mobility.” He continued, “When we need to build houses and require building materials, these tractors are just a call away and can transport materials to places where larger vehicles can’t even enter.”

On August 14, the Kerala cabinet subcommittee announced that ₹10,000 in financial assistance had been provided to 379 families affected by the landslides, according to ANI. A study revealed that human-caused climate change contributed to the intense rainfall, which was approximately 10 percent heavier than usual. The World Weather Attribution (WWA) described the Wayanad landslides as a “once in a 50-year event.”
