Israel’s Massive Airstrike on Hezbollah

Israel-Lebanon Clashes: Nearly 500 Killed in Southern Lebanon Amid Intensified Israeli Airstrikes on Hezbollah

Nearly 500 people have been killed across southern Lebanon after Israel launched its largest aerial offensive against the Iran-backed Shiite militant group Hezbollah since the war in Gaza began on October 7. According to Lebanon’s health ministry, around 1,650 people have been wounded, including about 100 women and children among the fatalities.

Skirmishes along Israel’s northern border with Lebanon had become a daily occurrence as Hezbollah continued to fire hundreds of rockets into Israel, asserting its actions were in solidarity with Palestinians enduring Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

Tensions escalated in August after Hezbollah launched rockets and drones in response to the killing of its senior commander Faud Shukr by Israel in July. On Sunday, the militant group fired over 100 rockets, declaring an “open-ended battle of reckoning” with Israel after a series of explosions targeted pagers and radios across Lebanon. Lebanon blamed Israel and its spy agency Mossad for the attacks, which were aimed at Hezbollah members.

Israel has stated that diplomatic efforts to halt Hezbollah’s attacks are failing, suggesting that a full-scale war may be the only way to stop assaults on its northern border and allow citizens to return to their homes.

Latest Updates on the Israel-Lebanon Conflict:

  • The Israeli military has announced plans to intensify its aerial campaign targeting Hezbollah’s weapon sites in southern and eastern Lebanon. An Israeli official emphasized that the focus is on weakening Hezbollah’s military capabilities, indicating that a ground invasion is not imminent.
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of “complicated days” ahead, stating, “I want to clarify Israel’s policy: we do not wait for the threat, we stay ahead of it.”
  • In a video address to the Lebanese people, Netanyahu reassured them that Israel’s campaign is not aimed at civilians, urging them to “get out of harm’s way now.” He added, “For years, Hezbollah has used you as human shields, placing rockets in your homes and missiles in your garages aimed directly at our cities. To protect our people, we must neutralize those weapons.”
  • Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian cautioned that the conflict could have “irreversible consequences,” accusing Israel of trying to drag the entire Middle East into a full-scale war. “We do not seek instability in the region, as the consequences would be catastrophic,” he said.
  • United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in Lebanon, condemning both Israel’s bombing campaign and Hezbollah’s continued strikes into Israel. “All efforts must be focused on finding a diplomatic solution,” Guterres urged.
  • EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell warned that the situation risks plunging the region into an “all-out war.” “We are on the brink of a full-fledged conflict. More military strikes, more destruction, more victims—this is what we are witnessing,” Borrell said ahead of a UN summit.

Right after Biden-Modi Meet; US Pushes for Ban on Chinese Technology

0

After a meeting between President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the President’s residence in Delaware, the U.S. Commerce Department announced on Monday that it is pursuing a ban on the sale of autonomous and connected vehicles in the U.S. that contain Chinese and Russian software or hardware. The move aims to safeguard national security and protect American drivers.

PM Modi called the discussions with Biden “fruitful,” highlighting that they addressed both global and regional issues. Notably, Biden expressed U.S. support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council and congratulated Modi on his historic visits to Poland and the UK.

The restrictions on software will be enforced starting with the 2027 model year, while the hardware prohibitions will take effect in 2030, or January 1, 2029, for vehicles without a specific model year. The Commerce Department emphasized the urgency of this action due to the risks posed by modern vehicle technologies—such as microphones, cameras, GPS, and Bluetooth—which could be exploited by foreign adversaries to access sensitive personal information, like home addresses or school locations.

In extreme cases, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo warned, foreign actors could gain control of multiple vehicles, causing crashes or road blockages. “This is purely a national security measure,” Raimondo stated, noting that there are currently few Chinese or Russian cars in the U.S. but referencing Europe’s experience as a cautionary tale, where Chinese electric vehicles have quickly captured market share.

Janka Oertel, Director of the Asia Program at the European Council on Foreign Relations, pointed out that the issue of who controls data and software updates is deeply intertwined with national security, cybersecurity, and privacy. Some vehicle contracts have already shown that data ends up in China.

The proposed rule would ban the import and sale of vehicles equipped with Chinese or Russian-made software or hardware that enables external communication, including via Bluetooth, cellular, satellite, or Wi-Fi. It would also prohibit autonomous vehicles using such technologies, even if manufactured in the U.S., but would exclude non-road vehicles like those used for agriculture or mining.

Commerce officials have consulted with major global automakers and industry associations to understand the complexities of supply chains, and they are now inviting public comments on the rule, which will be finalized within 30 days of publication. This effort follows other recent moves by the Biden administration to reduce U.S. dependence on Chinese products, including electric vehicles, and bolster domestic industries.

Indian Origin Billionaire Slams Elon Musk Over Controversial Post; “You Owe Me Apology”

0

Indian-American venture capitalist and Kamala Harris supporter, Vinod Khosla, has responded to tech billionaire Elon Musk after Musk accused him of putting a “no plebs allowed” sign on a public beach near his California home.

On Sunday, Musk shared an image of a sign that read, “No plebs allowed,” on a beach with the name “Vinay Khosla” written underneath. However, the authenticity of the sign could not be independently verified by HT.

In a follow-up post, the Tesla CEO claimed, “Vinod says we should send tens of thousands of unvetted migrants to small towns across America, but he didn’t want to let the public walk on his beach.” Musk referenced a Bloomberg report about Khosla’s failed legal battle to restrict access to Martins Beach, a popular surfing destination near his residence.

“I’m throwing a party on Vinod’s beach! For cuisine, I’m thinking BBQ,” Musk added, taking a jab at the businessman.

‘Fraudulent Photo’

In response, Khosla, co-founder of Sun Microsystems and founder of Khosla Ventures, accused Musk of spreading misinformation, stating the photo was “AI-generated” and demanded an apology.

“You owe me an apology for spreading falsehoods. This post should have a community comment as it’s a fraudulent photo. I believe it’s AI-generated, but you can verify that. It’s important we have rational debates without personal attacks,” Khosla replied, asserting that he had never erected such a sign or anything similar.

In his extended post, Khosla also criticized Musk’s recent support for Republican candidate and former president Donald Trump ahead of the November elections.

“(I can throw personal truths at you, unlike your false photo). While we agree on many things—like illegal immigration, climate change, and meritocracy (with compassion)—we disagree on major issues like who is best suited to save democracy and the importance of values in selecting a President,” Khosla wrote.

The Martins Beach Dispute

Khosla, 69, continued by clarifying the legal details of the Martins Beach controversy. In 2008, after purchasing property near the beach, he installed a gate blocking public access. While his legal team argued the gate was lawful since it was on private property, critics and local groups filed lawsuits, demanding the gate’s removal.

“Every court ruling regarding public access through my property has affirmed my right to consider it private, with no public access through it to the beach. The only case I lost was about closing the gate for a prior paid parking business, with the state preventing me from applying for a permit while still requiring one to shut it down. Very typical of the California Coastal Commission,” Khosla explained.

Sirsa MP Kumari Selja Opens Up About Leaving Congress Rumours

0

Senior Congress leader Kumari Selja on Monday declined Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s invitation to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), amid speculation about internal party discord ahead of the Haryana elections.

The 61-year-old, a key Dalit leader in the Congress, urged BJP leaders to avoid giving her unsolicited advice.

“Congress is in my veins. Just as my father was draped in the party flag, so will I be when I depart,” Selja declared at an AajTak event. She emphasized that there is no unrest within Congress, but acknowledged that the party is addressing some internal matters as part of its ongoing development.

“There are always internal discussions that aren’t for public consumption. The party is progressing, and these are normal decision-making processes,” she explained.

Following reports that Selja had distanced herself from the election campaign, former Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar invited her to join the BJP, suggesting that the party was open to her joining.

“There is our Dalit sister… staying at home. Many people, including those who were once upset with us, have joined our party. We are open to bringing her into our fold if she chooses to join,” Khattar said.

After securing a victory in the Sirsa Lok Sabha constituency, Selja had earlier expressed her interest in contesting the upcoming assembly elections, but was not selected by the party’s high command.

Supreme Court Pushes Delhi Govt to Decide on Remission Plea

0

The Supreme Court on Monday instructed the Delhi government, now led by newly appointed Chief Minister Atishi, to decide on the remission of a life convict within three weeks. This directive comes after the court expressed dissatisfaction over delays caused by former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s inability to sign documents while in jail due to the excise policy case.

A bench comprising Justices AS Oka and Pankaj Mithal noted that this issue should no longer persist, as the new chief minister has assumed office. “You can take directions from the chief minister,” the bench remarked, scheduling the next hearing for October 18.

Additional Solicitor General Archana Pathak Dave, representing the Delhi government, assured the court that a decision would be reached within three weeks.

At the last hearing on September 6, the court had expressed frustration over the delays in deciding remission cases, which impact personal liberty, due to the absence of the chief minister’s signature. The court questioned whether any legal restraint prevented the chief minister from performing his duties while in jail, noting that the matter could affect numerous individuals.

The case involves convict Harpreet Singh, who is serving a life sentence and filed for premature release earlier this year. In May, the Supreme Court granted Delhi two months to decide on his petition and released Singh on furlough. By July, the remission board was still considering his plea, prompting the court to give the government another month to finalize the decision.

The Delhi government had informed the court that Singh’s file was delayed, pending Kejriwal’s signature, before it could be forwarded to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena for approval.

The court also asked the government to clarify if the chief minister was legally prohibited from handling remission cases while in custody. It further warned that it might invoke its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution, which allows the court to pass any order necessary to deliver complete justice, to release Singh.

Indians Win Chess Olympiad Gold Medals

India made history on Sunday as both its men’s and women’s teams won their first-ever gold medals at the 45th Chess Olympiad, triumphing in the final round against their respective opponents.

The men’s team defeated Slovenia, with D Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, and Rameshbabu Praggnanadhaa securing wins in the 11th and final round.

Meanwhile, the women’s team claimed victory over Azerbaijan with a dominant 3.5-0.5 score, sealing the championship title.

Previously, the Indian men’s team had won bronze medals in 2014 and 2022, while the women’s team earned a bronze at the 2022 Olympiad held in Chennai.

World Championship contender Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi were once again instrumental in India’s success in the open category. Gukesh, playing with the black pieces, delivered a tactical masterclass against Slovenia’s Vladimir Fedoseev, securing a hard-fought win. Erigaisi also triumphed with the black pieces on board three, defeating Jan Subeli in a Centre Counter defense match.

Adding to the team’s dominance, Praggnanadhaa delivered a crushing victory against Anton Demchenko, giving India a decisive 3-0 lead over Slovenia with one game still left.

The Indian men finished the tournament with an impressive 21 points out of a possible 22, conceding only one 2-2 draw against Uzbekistan while defeating all other opponents.

The Indian women then added to the celebration by defeating Azerbaijan 3.5-0.5. D Harika displayed her technical prowess on the top board, while Divya Deshmukh once again shined, securing her individual gold on the third board.

After Rameshbabu Vaishali’s draw, Vantika Agrawal’s victory confirmed India’s triumph in the women’s category.
