Foods

What we eat before bed can significantly impact our sleep quality. Certain foods and drinks can stimulate the digestive system, raise body temperature, or increase alertness, making it difficult to fall asleep. Heavy, spicy, or caffeinated foods can cause indigestion, and heartburn, or stimulate the nervous system, disrupting the sleep cycle. Eating too close to bedtime may also lead to disrupted sleep as the body focuses on digestion rather than rest. Choosing the wrong foods before bed can delay sleep onset, cause nighttime awakenings, and affect overall sleep quality.

Foods to Avoid Before Bed

Here’s a list of foods and drinks you should avoid consuming close to bedtime:

  1. Coffee and Other Caffeinated Beverages: Coffee, tea, and energy drinks contain caffeine, a stimulant that blocks sleep-inducing chemicals in the brain and increases adrenaline production. This leads to heightened alertness, making it difficult to fall asleep. Even decaffeinated coffee contains small amounts of caffeine that may disturb sensitive sleepers.
  2. Chocolate: Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, contains caffeine and theobromine, both of which can stimulate the nervous system and make it harder to relax and sleep. The sugar content can also lead to energy spikes that interfere with falling asleep.
  3. Spicy Foods: Spicy dishes can trigger indigestion and acid reflux, making it uncomfortable to lie down and sleep. They also raise body temperature, which can disrupt the body’s natural cooling process that promotes sleep.
  4. Alcohol: While alcohol may initially make you feel sleepy, it disrupts the deep stages of sleep and can lead to frequent awakenings throughout the night. Alcohol also increases the likelihood of snoring and sleep apnea, affecting sleep quality.
  5. Fatty Foods: High-fat foods like pizza, burgers, or fried snacks take longer to digest, keeping your digestive system active when it should be resting. This can cause discomfort, indigestion, and acid reflux, all of which disrupt sleep.
  6. Citrus Fruits: Acidic foods like oranges, lemons, and grapefruits can lead to acid reflux when eaten too close to bedtime. The acidity may irritate the esophagus and cause heartburn, making it harder to fall asleep.
  7. Soda and Sugary Drinks: Sugary drinks, especially those containing caffeine like soda, can lead to energy spikes and crashes, making it difficult to fall asleep. The carbonation can also cause bloating and discomfort, which interrupts sleep.
  8. Red Meat: Red meat is high in protein and fat, making it harder to digest. Consuming it late in the evening can lead to an active digestive system that interferes with your ability to relax and fall asleep.
  9. Ice Cream: Ice cream is high in sugar and fat, both of which can interfere with sleep. The sugar can cause energy spikes, while the fat slows down digestion, making it difficult for your body to rest.
  10. Aged Cheeses: Aged cheeses like Parmesan and blue cheese contain tyramine, an amino acid that can trigger the release of norepinephrine, a hormone that increases alertness and brain activity, making it harder to wind down for sleep.

What should be eaten before bed?

Avoiding these foods before bedtime can improve sleep quality and help you wake up feeling more rested. Opt for lighter, sleep-friendly snacks like bananas, almonds, or herbal teas to promote restful sleep. By making mindful choices about your pre-bedtime diet, you can create a more conducive environment for a good night’s sleep.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) announced Thursday the successful elimination of three high-ranking Hamas leaders, including their Hamas head Rawhi Mushtaha, in a precision strike on an underground compound in northern Gaza.

Israel claims killing of 3 Hamas leaders in airstrike

According to the IDF’s statement on X (formerly Twitter), the operation targeted and killed Mushtaha along with two other senior commanders: Sameh Siraj, who held the security portfolio on Hamas’ political bureau and Labor Committee, and Sameh Oudeh, Commander of Hamas’ General Security Mechanism.

“Approximately 3 months ago, in a joint IDF and ISA strike in Gaza, the following terrorists were eliminated,” the IDF stated, describing a sophisticated operation targeting a fortified underground facility. The military detailed that the compound served as a Hamas command and control center, designed to shelter senior operatives for extended periods.

Most significant killings in Gaza led by IDF

The significance of these eliminations is amplified by Mushtaha’s close association with Yahya Sinwar, a key Hamas leader who helped orchestrate the October 7 attack on Israel.

That attack, which killed over 1,200 people and saw more than 200 taken hostage, sparked the current conflict in Gaza.

“The IDF will continue to pursue all of the terrorists responsible for the October 7 massacre and will operate against anyone who threatens the State of Israel,” the military emphasized in their statement.

No comments from Hamas yet

As of this report, Hamas has not issued any comment confirming or denying the deaths of these leaders. The ongoing conflict, now in its sixth month, has resulted in significant casualties, with Palestinian health authorities reporting over 41,000 deaths in Gaza since the war’s inception.

This operation represents one of the IDF’s most significant strikes against Hamas’s leadership structure since the conflict began, potentially impacting the organization’s command capabilities in northern Gaza.

Telugu cinema icon Nagarjuna Akkineni has escalated his conflict with Telangana Congress Minister Konda Surekha to the legal arena, filing both criminal and civil defamation cases at Nampally court over her controversial remarks about his son’s divorce.

Nagarjuna Akkineni sues Telangana Minister Konda Surekha

Notably, the legal action comes in response to Surekha’s explosive allegations linking BRS leader KTR to the high-profile divorce of Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu.

The minister made sweeping claims about KTR’s alleged involvement with drug-related parties and suggested his interference in Telugu film industry actresses’ careers.

Most controversially, Surekha alleged that KTR had demanded sexual favours from the Akkineni family regarding their N-convention centre, claiming this controversy contributed to the celebrity couple’s divorce. These accusations have drawn sharp criticism from the film fraternity and beyond.

Here’s what Nagarjuna said on this controversy:

“I strongly condemn the comments of the honourable Minister, Mrs Konda Surekha. Don’t use the lives of film stars who stay away from politics to criticise your opponents,” Nagarjuna stated on social media in Telugu, urging the minister to “respect other people’s privacy” and avoid dragging film stars into political disputes.

The legal complaint, shared by Naga Chaitanya on X (formerly Twitter), accuses Surekha of deliberately damaging the Akkineni family’s reputation. The actor is pursuing both criminal defamation charges and financial compensation through a civil suit.

How did this row evoke?

The controversy has reignited public interest in Naga Chaitanya and Samantha’s 2021 divorce, which had largely settled from media attention following Chaitanya’s engagement to actor Sobhita Dhulipala in August this year.

This legal battle marks a rare instance of the typically apolitical Akkineni family taking strong action against political figures, highlighting the serious nature of the allegations and their determination to protect their family’s reputation.

Ahmedabad’s Unique Garba Tradition: Men Dress as Women in Navratri

In the labyrinthine streets of Ahmedabad’s old city, a remarkable tradition unfolds each year during Navratri that challenges conventional gender norms while preserving a poignant historical legacy. On the eighth night of the festival, known as Ashtami, men from the Barot community don colourful sarees and perform Garba in a ritual that spans two centuries, honouring an ancient curse and a woman’s tragic tale.

Why do Men wear sarees during Navratri?

The story centres around Sadu Mata Ni Pol, a historic neighbourhood where over 1,000 residents maintain a tradition born from a dark chapter in their community’s history. According to local lore, more than 200 years ago, a woman named Saduben sought protection from the men of the Barot community when faced with a Mughal nobleman’s unwanted advances. Their failure to defend her led to devastating consequences – the loss of her child and, ultimately, her own life through the practice of sati.

Before her death, Saduben laid a powerful curse on the men who had failed to protect her, declaring that future generations would be marked by cowardice. This curse became the foundation of a tradition that continues to draw thousands of spectators to the narrow lanes of this heritage neighbourhood.

What is history of Barot community of Gujarat?

The Barot community, historically known as genealogists and storytellers for Gujarat’s prominent families, responded to this curse by establishing a temple dedicated to Sadu Mata. The annual ritual of men performing Garba in sarees serves as both an act of penance and a celebration of devotion, transforming the pol into a vibrant spectacle of faith and tradition.

For many participants, the ritual transcends its origins as merely an act of atonement. One devotee, who has participated for five years, shares his connection to the tradition: after praying for business success and the blessing of a son, he believes Sadu Mata answered his prayers.

His participation now represents gratitude rather than obligation, highlighting how the tradition has evolved to become a celebration of thanksgiving.

What does this custom – Sadu Mata Ni Pol signify?

The significance of this custom extends beyond its religious aspects. For the Barot community, traditionally entrusted with preserving family histories and oral traditions, particularly for Rajput and Kshatriya families, this ritual represents a living link to their cultural heritage.

While their traditional roles as genealogists have evolved with time, their commitment to preserving these unique customs remains unwavering.

Is this custom recognised by UNESCO?

The setting itself adds to the ritual’s profound impact. Ahmedabad, India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City, provides a fitting backdrop for this centuries-old tradition. Sadu Mata Ni Pol, one of the city’s 184 historic neighbourhoods, transforms during the festival into a sacred space where past and present converge in a spectacular display of devotion.

The ritual challenges modern perspectives on gender expression while remaining deeply rooted in traditional values. While contemporary observers might view men wearing sarees as a statement on gender norms, for the Barot community, it represents something far more profound – a symbol of humility, respect, and spiritual devotion.

About Navratri & Sadu Mata Ni Pol:

As Navratri brings millions of Indians together in celebration, this unique tradition in Ahmedabad’s old city stands as a testament to the enduring power of cultural memory and communal faith. The sight of men performing Sheri Garba in flowing sarees, their movements echoing centuries of devotion, serves as a reminder of how historical events can shape and sustain cultural practices across generations.

The tradition at Sadu Mata Ni Pol demonstrates how communities can transform historical tragedy into meaningful rituals, keeping their heritage alive while providing future generations with a tangible connection to their past. As the old city’s narrow lanes fill with spectators each year, the boundary between curse and blessing, penance and celebration, continues to blur, creating a unique cultural phenomenon that defies easy categorization.

Navratri 2024: As the vibrant hues of autumn paint the sky, India is gearing up for the annual celebration of Navratri, a nine-night festival honouring the divine feminine in all its forms. This year, Navratri is set to commence on October 17, 2024, and will culminate on October 25, 2024.

India celebrates Navratri 2024 – Why Navratri is celebrated?

Navratri, literally meaning “nine nights,” is a significant festival observed by Hindus across the country. It is dedicated to the worship of nine different manifestations of the Goddess Durga, each representing a distinct aspect of divine power and energy. The nine nights are divided into three sets of three, each representing a different aspect of the Goddess.

  • The first three nights are dedicated to the Goddess in her form of Durga, the destroyer of evil.
  • The second three nights are dedicated to the Goddess in her form of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
  • The final three nights are dedicated to the Goddess in her form of Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and wisdom.

How Navratri is celebrated?

The festival is marked by a series of rituals, including fasting, prayer, and offerings to the Goddess. One of the most popular traditions during Navratri is the Garba, a folk dance that originated in Gujarat. This energetic and vibrant dance is performed in groups, with participants moving to the rhythm of traditional music.

Another significant aspect of Navratri is the Dandiya Ras, a similar folk dance that is popular in North India. This dance involves using sticks known as “dandiya” to create intricate patterns and rhythms.

Navratri is also a time for feasting and celebration. People indulge in a variety of traditional delicacies, including sweets, savouries, and regional specialities. The festival is a joyous occasion that brings families and communities together to celebrate their faith and heritage.

How does Navratri blend into the culture of India?

In addition to its religious significance, Navratri is also a major cultural event in India. It attracts tourists from all over the world, who come to witness the vibrant festivities and experience the rich traditions of the country.

As Navratri approaches, the streets of India are adorned with colourful decorations, and the air is filled with the sounds of music and laughter. It is a time for spiritual reflection, cultural celebration, and the joyous worship of the divine feminine.

“Country don’t have Fathers”: Kangana Ranaut Sparks Row over Gandhi Remarks

Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut is known for her irrelevant, outrageous comments on the sensitive topic which gradually sparks conversation. Now, she has ignited a new political firestorm with controversial social media comments about Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary, drawing sharp criticism from both opposition leaders and members of her own party.

Kangana Ranaut’s remarks on Mahatma Gandhi sparks row

The BJP MP from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, posted a contentious message on Instagram Stories that appeared to challenge Mahatma Gandhi’s status as ‘Father of the Nation.’

Desh ke pita nahi, desh ke to lal hote hai. Dhanye hai Bharat ma ke ye lal (‘The country does not have fathers; it has sons. Blessed are these sons of Mother India),” wrote Ranaut while paying tribute to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his 120th birth anniversary.

Immediate backlash from Opposition

The remarks prompted immediate backlash, with Congress leader Supriya Shrinate condemning what she called a “lewd jibe” at Gandhi. “Godse worshippers draw distinctions between Bapu and Shastri ji. Will Narendra Modi wholeheartedly forgive his party’s new Godse devotee?” Shrinate questioned on X (formerly Twitter).

Even the BJP draws criticism

More significantly, the controversy has drawn criticism from within BJP ranks. Senior party leader Manoranjan Kalia from Punjab publicly rebuked Ranaut, stating, “Politics is not her field. Politics is a serious affair. One must think before speaking… Her controversial remarks cause trouble for the party.”

Kangana in Soup again!

This latest incident follows a pattern of controversial statements from the newly elected MP. Just last month, Ranaut faced public outcry for her comments on the farmers’ protest, where she claimed the agitation was creating a “Bangladesh-type situation in India” with allegations of “dead bodies hanging, and rapes taking place” at protest sites.

Following that backlash, Ranaut had retreated from her position, acknowledging her dual responsibility as both an artist and BJP representative. In an apparent attempt to soften her latest controversial stance, she followed up with a post crediting Prime Minister Modi for advancing Gandhi’s legacy of cleanliness in India.

The incident highlights the continuing challenges faced by political parties when celebrities-turned-politicians make controversial statements, particularly regarding historically revered figures like Mahatma Gandhi.

Naga Chaitanya, Samantha 'Hit Back' at Telangana Minister’s Divorce Dig

In an unprecedented intersection of entertainment and politics, Telugu film stars Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu have forcefully refuted claims made by Telangana Minister Konda Surekha linking their divorce to prominent political figure KT Rama Rao (KTR).

The controversy has sparked a heated debate about the boundaries between public figures’ private lives and political discourse.

How did Naga-Samantha’s divorce turn into controversy?

The situation escalated when Minister Surekha publicly alleged, “KTR was the reason behind the divorce of Naga Chaitanya and Samantha…” This statement prompted swift and strong responses from both actors, who separated two years ago.

Naga Chaitanya to Telangana Minister Konda Surekha

Naga Chaitanya, who recently became engaged to actor Sobhita Dhulipala in August, issued a stern statement on X (formerly Twitter), calling the minister’s claims “not only false but absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable.”

He emphasized the personal nature of their separation, stating, “After a lot of thought, a mutual decision was made by me and my former spouse to part ways. It was a decision made in peace, owing to our different life goals.”

Samantha opens up on this controversy

That’s not it, even Naga’s ex-wife, Samantha Ruth Prabhu took to Instagram to address the controversy directly, demanding that politicians keep her personal life out of their political battles.

“My divorce is a personal matter and I request that you refrain from speculating about it… To clarify: my divorce was mutual consent and amicable, with no political conspiracy involved,” she wrote, criticizing the minister’s “speculation, misrepresentation of facts, and trivialisation of her journey as a woman.”

The controversy drew in veteran actor Nagarjuna Akkineni, Chaitanya’s father, who demanded a retraction of the minister’s statements, calling them “completely irrelevant and false.” He urged politicians to “respect other people’s privacy” and avoid using movie stars’ personal lives for political gain.

Telangana Minister Surekha’s Clarification:

Facing mounting criticism, Minister Surekha issued a clarification, stating her comments were meant to address a broader issue of “belittling of women” rather than to hurt Samantha’s sentiments. She offered an unconditional retraction, saying, “The way you have grown up with self-power is not only an admiration for me… but also an ideal. If you or your fans are offended by my comments, I unconditionally retract my comments.”

The incident has sparked broader discussions about the intersection of celebrity privacy and political rhetoric, highlighting the challenges public figures face in maintaining personal boundaries while living in the spotlight. Both actors have received widespread support for their stance on keeping personal matters separate from political discourse.

In a charming new advertisement that’s taking social media by storm, cricket legend Virat Kohli found himself playing by some very unusual rules – courtesy of his wife, acclaimed actress Anushka Sharma. The power couple’s latest commercial has captured audiences with its authentic glimpse into their playful relationship dynamics.

Have a look at Anushka and Virat’s viral video:

The advertisement for Puma shows Sharma challenging Kohli to a cricket match but with a creative twist. “I believe I can defeat you in a cricket match, but on my terms,” she declares confidently. What follows is a delightful display of Sharma’s unconventional cricket “regulations,” including the memorable “Rule one – If you miss a ball three times, you’re out. Rule two – If you lose your temper, you’re out.”

What does Puma’s advertisement highlight?

The commercial’s highlight comes when Sharma introduces perhaps the most unorthodox rule in cricket history: the batsman must retrieve their hits. Even more amusing is her quick-thinking declaration that “The first ball was a practice ball” after being bowled out by her husband, showcasing the actress’s natural comedic timing.

Celebrities and netizens respond!!

Titled “Lulu balling, lassi shots & a lot more,” the advertisement has garnered widespread attention on social media platforms. Celebrity responses have been enthusiastic, with filmmaker Zoya Akhtar sharing laughing emojis and actress Samyuktha Hegde commenting, “What an amazing start to the day.”

A Glimpse of Happy Marriage

The commercial offers a rare glimpse into the couple’s chemistry, five years after their 2017 wedding. Now parents to two children, Vamika and Akaay Kohli, the couple currently resides in London. Their latest collaboration proves that even with Kohli’s status as one of cricket’s greatest players, he’s not exempt from following his wife’s creative rule-making – at least in front of the cameras.

The advertisement’s success lies in its ability to blend the couple’s natural rapport with gentle humour, offering fans a relatable moment between two of India’s most prominent celebrities.

A shocking incident happened in Delhi last night when a 55-year-old doctor was shot dead at a private hospital in the Jaitpur area, just less than two months after the rape-murder case in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

What happened in Delhi’s Jaitpur area?

Briefing about this shooting incident, the staff at Nima Hospital told the media that two teenagers reached the hospital late at night on October 2. One of them asked for a change of dressing for his injury in his toe. The night before, the teenager was treated at the hospital. After the dressing was done, the two teens said they wanted a prescription and went to Dr Javid Akhtar’s cabin, a practitioner of Unani Medicine.

Just minutes later, the nursing staff, Gajala Parveen and Md Kamil, heard a gunshot. They rushed to the doctor’s cabin and found him drenched in blood coming out of his head.

Are the suspect teenagers, who shot the doctor dead?

The hospital staff said the suspects could be 16 to 17 years old.

The police said that it appears to be a case of targeted killing and the assailants’ visit the previous night could have been for a recce.

Another doctor was killed on duty

Notably, this doctor-killing incident comes less than two months after Kolkata’s horrific rape-murder case, in which a trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered at a state-run hospital, leading to a massive outrage nationwide by the doctors demanding the safety of healthcare staff on duty.

As per the aftermath of the Kolkata horror and the doctors’ protest, the Supreme Court has set up a National Task Force to recommend steps to ensure the safety of the doctors on duty.

Coldplay Sets a Final Countdown: ‘Two Albums to Go’, Says Chris Martin

Coldplay fans, prepare for some bittersweet news. The iconic British band has revealed that they will release only two more albums before taking a break from making new music.

2 more albums of Coldplay before Retirement

Vocalist and pianist Chris Martin shared this revelation during an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “We are only going to do 12 proper albums, and that’s real,” he said, as quoted by People.

Coldplay has already released nine studio albums, including their latest, Music of the Spheres. Their upcoming album, Moon Music, is set to be released on October 4.

When asked if he would like to release more albums, Martin replied, “You don’t, because less is more. And for some of our critics, even less would be even more.” He emphasized the importance of knowing when to stop, drawing a comparison to the Harry Potter series, which consists of seven books.

“There’s only 12 and a half Beatles albums. There’s about the same Bob Marley, so all of our heroes. And also having that limit means that the quality control is so high right now, and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great,” Martin added.

‘Band Trying to Improve’: Chris Martin

The Coldplay frontman explained that instead of “coasting” at this stage of their career, the band is “trying to improve.” He also revealed that one of the main reasons for his decision to retire from album-making is the “a lot of wrangling of people” involved in creating a “great” project. “I want to give the others some of their life for themselves,” he said.

Coldplay consists of Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland (guitarist), Guy Berryman (bassist), Will Champion (drummer and percussionist), and Phil Harvey (manager). They are scheduled to perform in India in January 2025 as part of their Music of the Spheres World Tour.
