RBI Offers Respite to Households with Lowered FY26 Inflation Forecast at 3.7%

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revised its inflation forecast for the financial year 2025–26 (FY26), lowering it from the earlier estimate of 4% to 3.7%. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra announced the update on Friday, signaling potential relief for Indian households as price pressures continue to ease.

According to the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), the downward revision in inflation is largely attributed to improved food supply conditions. Governor Malhotra stated, “Food inflation is subdued, and core inflation is projected to decline further.”

Highlighting India’s economic resilience, he added, “The Indian economy showcases strength, stability, and opportunity. We are growing rapidly and aspire to accelerate further.”

Alongside this inflation update, the RBI shifted its policy stance from “accommodative” to “neutral,” indicating a more balanced monetary approach moving forward.

In a key policy move, the MPC slashed the benchmark repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.5%—the lowest level seen in three years. This marks the third consecutive rate cut since February, totaling a 100 basis points reduction over the period.

The repo rate, which determines the rate at which banks borrow from the RBI, was last lower than 5.5% in August 2022. The reduction is aimed at stimulating growth amid signs of an economic slowdown, as India’s GDP growth dipped to a four-year low of 6.5% in FY25.

Governor Malhotra stated, “After carefully reviewing the macroeconomic and financial outlook, the MPC decided to lower the repo rate by 50 basis points.”

However, he cautioned that future rate cuts may be limited, saying, “Having reduced the repo rate by 100 basis points in quick succession, the room for additional easing is now constrained.”

This sequence of rate cuts marks the first such trend since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Steady Growth Forecast

Despite the monetary easing, the RBI has maintained its real GDP growth forecast for FY26 at 6.5%, with quarterly estimates as follows: 6.5% in Q1, 6.7% in Q2, 6.6% in Q3, and 6.4% in Q4. “Risks remain evenly balanced,” Malhotra remarked.

The latest rate cut is expected to reduce borrowing costs for home, vehicle, and business loans—potentially boosting consumer spending and revitalizing demand across sectors.

Elon Musk Risks Losing Billions Amid Ongoing Feud with Donald Trump

The world’s wealthiest individual, Elon Musk, could be staring at major financial losses due to his escalating clash with former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Their growing feud may disrupt Tesla’s self-driving car rollout, limit NASA contracts for SpaceX, stall Starlink’s international expansion, and lead to further advertising losses for Musk’s social media platform, X.

That said, the actual impact hinges on how far Trump is willing to take the conflict.

“Trump’s not exactly known for letting things slide,” auto analyst Sam Abuelsamid joked. Turning serious, he warned, “For someone who rails against government spending, Musk’s ventures are deeply reliant on federal support—making him vulnerable.”

While the U.S. government also has stakes in Musk’s ventures, the potential fallout looms larger for the entrepreneur.

This spat comes just days before Tesla is set to unveil its robotaxi prototype in Austin, Texas—a crucial event for the EV maker, which is facing sluggish sales. Federal safety regulators could become a major hurdle for this launch if Trump pressures them to scrutinize the rollout.

Even prior to the dispute, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had requested performance data on Tesla’s autonomous vehicles under poor visibility. The agency is already investigating 2.4 million Teslas over crash incidents involving its self-driving software.

The Department of Justice is also reportedly examining Tesla’s safety record, though its current findings remain undisclosed.

Following the robotaxi announcement, Tesla’s stock surged 50%. But after the Trump-Musk rift emerged, it plummeted over 14% on Thursday before rebounding slightly on Friday.

“Tesla’s recent rally was driven almost entirely by excitement over autonomous taxis,” said Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein. “This political fallout could hurt that momentum.”

Another vulnerable area for Tesla is its lucrative carbon credit business. On the same day the feud escalated, Republican senators inserted language into Trump’s budget plan to eliminate penalties for fuel-inefficient cars—undermining the market for Tesla’s emissions credits.

While Musk has publicly minimized the significance of this revenue stream, it remains substantial. In Q1 alone, Tesla earned $595 million from credit sales, even as its overall revenue declined.

Musk’s political affiliations have already triggered backlash. His previous alignment with Trump alienated many eco-conscious customers, resulting in showroom boycotts. If Musk has distanced himself from Trump, some of those customers may return—but that remains uncertain.

Some analysts once speculated that Trump supporters in red states might become Tesla buyers. That now seems unlikely.

“There are more questions than answers after Thursday’s developments,” TD Cowen’s Itay Michaeli noted. His target price for Tesla has dropped from $388 to $330. On Friday, shares hovered around $300.

Tesla has not commented publicly on the situation.

Trump, for his part, has threatened to cut federal contracts with SpaceX—posing a significant risk to a company valued at $350 billion and heavily involved in U.S. space operations, including NASA launches and future moon missions.

SpaceX’s crew transport services are critical to the U.S. space program. Without it, NASA would have to rely on Russia’s Soyuz capsules—a politically sensitive alternative.

Musk hinted at retaliation, tweeting that SpaceX might decommission its Dragon spacecraft. Hours later, he reversed course, clarifying in a reply to another user that no such move would happen.

Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet arm, has also benefited from Musk’s ties with Trump, securing service approvals in countries like Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India—where the service recently received a crucial license. Still, it’s unclear how much influence politics had in those deals.

Meanwhile, X is seeing some advertisers return after leaving over concerns about misinformation and conspiracy content. Musk has called their exit an “illegal boycott” and sued several firms, while the Trump administration launched an FTC investigation into possible collusion among advertisers.

Now, brands may face a new risk: the possibility that Trump will turn against X.

“If Trump grows hostile toward the platform, it could once again become politically toxic for big advertisers,” said Cornell political scientist Sarah Kreps. She noted, however, that whether an advertiser exodus happens will depend on how intense and prolonged the feud becomes.

Rahul Gandhi calls Maharashtra elections a ‘blueprint for rigged democracy’; BJP responds sharply.

On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Maharashtra assembly elections held last year were “rigged” and warned that a similar strategy could be used in the upcoming Bihar polls.

In a post on X, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha shared an article he authored, stating: “How do you steal an election? The 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections served as a blueprint for undermining democracy. My article breaks down the process step by step.”

He outlined the alleged method: “Step 1: Manipulate the panel that appoints the Election Commission. Step 2: Insert fake names into the voter list. Step 3: Falsely boost voter turnout figures. Step 4: Focus bogus voting in BJP’s key constituencies. Step 5: Conceal the evidence.”

Gandhi argued that the BJP’s actions were driven by desperation and likened the process to match-fixing: “A rigged contest may secure a win, but it corrodes institutions and erodes public trust in democratic outcomes.”

Calling on citizens to examine the evidence for themselves, he urged them to demand accountability.

He concluded, “The match-fixing seen in Maharashtra is headed next to Bihar, and potentially to any state where the BJP faces defeat. Tampered elections are toxic for democracy.”

In the 2024 Maharashtra elections, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance secured a dominant win with 235 seats, while the Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) suffered heavy losses.

Election Commission and BJP respond to the accusations

The Election Commission of India (ECI) previously addressed concerns about alleged irregularities in voter turnout data and clarified issues related to the removal of voter names from electoral rolls.

Responding to Gandhi’s claims, BJP spokesperson Tuhin Sinha said, as quoted by NDTV, “Rahul Gandhi is once again resorting to disgraceful tactics to malign the nation’s institutions. The Election Commission has already responded to these allegations in full detail.”

Omar Abdullah Highlights J&K Statehood Demand, Says “L-G Got Promoted, I Got Demoted” During Event with PM Modi

During an official event on Friday, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah publicly raised the demand for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Abdullah made the statement while sharing the stage with the Prime Minister and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha at the inauguration of key infrastructure projects, including the Chenab Bridge and the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express.

Reflecting on his long-standing association with railway projects in the region, Abdullah said, “I’ve had the honour of being part of major railway inaugurations in Jammu and Kashmir alongside the Prime Minister — first at Anantnag Railway Station and then at the Banihal Tunnel.”

In a pointed yet humorous remark, Abdullah highlighted the shift in political status following the abrogation of Article 370. “The same four people were present during the inauguration of Katra Railway Station in 2014. Back then, Manoj Sinha was a junior minister in the Railways. Today, he’s the Lieutenant Governor — a promotion. Meanwhile, I went from being the Chief Minister of a state to the head of a Union Territory — a demotion,” he said, while expressing optimism about the future. “But things will return to normal, and Prime Minister Modi will restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the iconic Chenab Railway Bridge on Friday, hailing it as a landmark in India’s infrastructure development. The bridge, the tallest of its kind in the world, signifies a critical step in connecting Kashmir to the broader Indian railway network.

Upon arriving at the Air Force station in Udhampur, the Prime Minister flew to the bridge site to formally inaugurate the engineering marvel. This marked his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir following Operation Sindoor, the retaliatory military operation launched after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives.

During the ceremony, PM Modi engaged with engineers, workers, and officials involved in the bridge’s construction, commending their role in completing a project of national significance.

NATO Seeks to Finalize Spending Agreement Amid U.S. Pressure

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is expected on Thursday to push for a new NATO defense spending deal that would align with President Donald Trump’s demands ahead of the upcoming summit later this month.

Trump, known for his unpredictable leadership style, has called on alliance members to commit to spending 5% of their GDP on defense at the NATO summit scheduled for June 24–25 in The Netherlands.

In response, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has proposed a compromise: 3.5% of GDP for core military spending by 2032, along with an additional 1.5% dedicated to broader security needs like infrastructure and resilience.

Diplomatic sources suggest that Rutte is close to securing consensus on the proposal ahead of the summit in The Hague. However, some member states remain hesitant about the scale and pace of the financial commitments.

“I’m really, absolutely, positively convinced that at the summit with the 32 [members], we will come to an agreement on this significant increase in defense spending,” Rutte said on Wednesday.

Spain has emerged as the most resistant member, expected to meet NATO’s current 2% spending target only by the end of this year. Other countries have reportedly requested more flexibility—seeking to extend the timeline or eliminate the clause requiring a 0.2 percentage point annual increase in core defense spending.

Still, the compromise appears likely to satisfy Trump’s public demands while easing pressure on European allies struggling to keep up. It allows Trump to claim victory without imposing the full financial burden immediately.

Hegseth is expected to use Thursday’s meeting with NATO defense ministers in Brussels to press for formal agreement on the proposal.

While the United States has endorsed Rutte’s plan, its ambassador to NATO emphasized on Wednesday that Washington expects clear deliverables: “plans, budgets, timelines.”

In parallel, NATO ministers in Brussels will approve new capability targets designed to bolster military readiness against the threat from Russia. NATO estimates suggest that fulfilling these capability requirements would cost member nations an average of 3.5% to 3.7% of their GDP.

Hegseth, a former television host, stirred tensions at NATO during his previous visit in February by warning that the US could consider withdrawing troops from Europe to focus more on China. Though no formal announcements have followed, the remark left NATO allies uneasy.

As the alliance nears agreement on defense spending, another contentious issue looms over the upcoming summit: how to handle Ukraine’s role.

Trump’s return to office has reversed Washington’s previous firm support for Ukraine, complicating NATO’s united front in response to Russia’s ongoing war. Underscoring this shift, Hegseth skipped a key meeting of Ukraine’s international supporters in Brussels on Wednesday.

European allies are urging NATO to send a clear message of solidarity by inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the summit in The Hague. For now, NATO has only confirmed Ukraine’s participation but has not clarified whether Zelensky himself will attend.

Anand defends Carlsen’s emotional outburst after loss to Gukesh: ‘I’ve felt the same way after losing to Magnus

D Gukesh, now a defining name in Indian chess, made history as the youngest-ever World Champion after defeating Ding Liren last year. However, his achievement faced scrutiny, with critics like Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik questioning the championship’s quality—especially following Liren’s costly blunder in the decisive game.

Come June, Gukesh silenced doubters with a remarkable comeback win over Carlsen—the very man many believed he needed to beat to legitimize his title. Carlsen, who had opted out of the previous FIDE cycle and is not competing in the current one, remains widely considered the greatest of all time. For some fans and Grandmasters, Gukesh’s title was incomplete without a showdown—and victory—against the Norwegian legend.

Their first encounter in Norway Chess saw Gukesh falter. But in Round 6, he returned stronger, sticking to the fundamentals and battling fiercely. In a dramatic endgame, Carlsen blundered, allowing Gukesh to pull off a stunning victory. The loss clearly stung—Carlsen was visibly furious, slamming the table in frustration.

Anand Reacts to Carlsen’s Outburst

Reacting to Carlsen’s visible anger, Viswanathan Anand offered insight during an interview with PTI. He noted, “Beating Gukesh clearly meant a lot to Magnus. Even if he’s been going through the motions in other games, this one was different. He wanted to prove something—maybe send a message to the younger generation to wait their turn. A 2-0 scoreline against Gukesh here would’ve made him very, very happy.”

Anand sympathized with Carlsen’s frustration, saying, “Anyone would’ve been upset losing from such a strong position. Missing that the knight comes back—it’s painful. I’ve been there myself. I remember blowing a winning game against Magnus in 2022 in Norway. I felt exactly the same way.”

He suggested fatigue or the tournament’s unique format—classical games followed by Armageddon tie-breaks—may have also played a role in Carlsen’s slip-up.

Anand also reminded that such emotional reactions are not new to chess: “We’ve seen plenty of anger before. This has been around for a while—players screaming, cursing. I remember at the 2000 World Championship in Delhi, Ivanchuk once threw a chair after a game with Jaan Ehlvest. The only difference now is the presence of cameras.”

On the intensity of the Carlsen-Gukesh clash, Anand added, “Even if Magnus isn’t as passionate about classical chess anymore, he clearly took these games against Gukesh very seriously. Maybe not Gukesh personally, but the idea of proving himself against the current World Champion. There was clearly a lot going on in his mind, and it boiled over.”

When asked if FIDE might take disciplinary action, Anand reflected cautiously: “Rules depend on interpretation. It’s tricky. I’m sure it’ll be brought up for discussion. But someone like Hikaru Nakamura says incidents like this draw attention and maybe we need more of it. There’s a balance to be found. Either way, I expect FIDE will address it soon.”

In case you missed it, Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life has been banned in Karnataka following Kamal Haasan’s controversial remark that “Kannada is born from Tamil,” and his refusal to apologise, stating it was said “out of love.” Despite the controversy, the actor’s devoted fanbase is undeterred. Many are taking to social media to declare they’ll travel the 42-kilometre stretch from Bengaluru to Hosur just to watch his latest film.

As Thug Life hit theatres on Thursday, fans flooded social media with pictures and videos from outside cinema halls, celebrating the release and sharing early reviews. One user on X (formerly Twitter) shared clips of fans lighting firecrackers at a single-screen theatre in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, adding, “Thug Life is banned in Karnataka, but our love for Kamal Haasan knows no bounds. All the fans from Bangalore are here in Hosur!”

Even on Reddit, fans were actively discussing the journey. One Bengaluru-based Kamal fan posted, “Is it safe to ride to Hosur tomorrow to watch THUG LIFE? Please don’t take offense… I just don’t want my bike to get scratched or tyres punctured.” Another reassured them, noting that Hosur has many KA-registered vehicles, just as Bengaluru hosts several TN-registered ones. Many others chimed in to confirm that the trip should be safe.

Language Controversy Overshadows Big Comeback

Thug Life marks a long-awaited reunion between Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan—nearly four decades after their iconic 1987 film Nayakan. However, Kamal’s recent statement during a promotional event in Karnataka has sparked backlash, overshadowing the release. On Tuesday, the Karnataka High Court criticised Haasan for refusing to apologise. The judge remarked that a “single apology” might have resolved the matter, even questioning whether the actor was qualified to make such a linguistic assertion.

The film features an ensemble cast including Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, Rohit Saraf, and Baburaj.

Centre reduces the tenure of ED Special Director Satyabrata Kumar

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has shortened the tenure of Satyabrata Kumar, Special Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and ordered his immediate repatriation to his parent cadre—the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).

Kumar, a 2004-batch Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Indirect Taxes) officer, was posted as Special Director of Enforcement for ED’s eastern region in Kolkata in September 2024, after earlier serving in Mumbai.

According to the ACC order issued on May 30, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the Department of Revenue’s proposal to curtail the deputation tenure of Satyabrata Kumar, IRS (C&IT:2004), and repatriate him to his parent cadre with immediate effect.”

Kumar began his stint at the ED in 2013 as Joint Director in Mumbai, where he oversaw several high-profile investigations. His tenure was extended in 2022, allowing him to serve in the agency until October 2026.

Sources suggest that his return to CBIC may be tied to a significant assignment, given his expertise in probing complex financial crimes.

Among the major cases he supervised are the ₹12,500-crore Punjab National Bank scam involving Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi; the ₹9,200-crore loan fraud linked to Vijay Mallya’s defunct Kingfisher Airlines; alleged terror-financing charges against deceased drug trafficker Iqbal Mirchi; PMLA proceedings against Yes Bank founder Rana Kapoor; and the probe into the over USD 1 million Mahadev Online Book illegal betting platform.

Health Department Issues Covid-19 Advisory Amid Surge in Cases

Covid-19

In response to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases in the state—59 reported on Monday alone—the Maharashtra Health Department has issued an advisory to administrative heads, including district collectors and municipal commissioners. The directive urges adherence to existing Covid-19 guidelines and instructs local authorities to ensure the availability of isolation beds, medical oxygen, PPE kits, essential medicines, and other treatment facilities. Special caution has been advised for senior citizens and individuals with comorbidities, recommending they avoid poorly ventilated or crowded places and wear face masks when necessary.

Covid-19 infections have shown a steady increase since last month. Between January and May, the state reported 873 cases, with 483 recorded in Mumbai—477 of which emerged in May. As per the Health Department’s June 2 update, 59 new cases were detected: 20 in Mumbai, 4 in Thane, and 17 in Pune, bringing the total number of active cases in Maharashtra to 494.

Health secretaries Nipun Vinayak and Virendra Singh issued the advisory on Monday, urging all municipal commissioners, district collectors, and CEOs of zilla parishads to closely monitor the situation and comply with central government guidelines. The advisory emphasized that even though most current cases are mild, continued vigilance and data reporting are essential.

According to the department, the Omicron subvariants JN1, XFG, and LF 7.9 are currently in circulation. These typically result in mild symptoms such as fever, cough, and sore throat. Authorities are instructed to maintain proper data entry, especially concerning comorbidities, and to implement Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities to promote hygienic practices like handwashing, respiratory hygiene, and cough etiquette. Vulnerable populations are specifically advised to exercise caution in enclosed or crowded spaces.

The advisory also calls for symptomatic individuals to monitor their health and promptly seek medical attention if they experience breathing difficulties or chest pain. Additionally, the local administration has been directed to assess the readiness of all health facilities—from district hospitals to medical colleges. Emphasis has been placed on ensuring the availability of diagnostics, critical care infrastructure, and oxygen supply, including functioning PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) plants. Mock drills are to be conducted to evaluate emergency preparedness.

An Action Taken Report on these measures is to be submitted immediately.

As of May 28, 2025, India had a total of 1,621 active Covid-19 cases, with over 90% concentrated in six states: Kerala, Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.

Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy Says Elon Musk’s Tesla Has No Interest in Manufacturing in India

Elon Musk-owned Tesla is reportedly not interested in establishing manufacturing and production units in India. According to Union Minister for Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy, Tesla’s current focus is only on expanding its showroom presence in the country.

“Tesla is not expected to manufacture in India; they are only planning to open showrooms,” the minister told news agency ANI.

Despite Tesla’s lack of interest, Kumaraswamy highlighted that several global automakers—including Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Skoda, and Kia—have expressed willingness to invest in manufacturing in India under the new electric vehicle (EV) policy.

As per the policy, companies investing $500 million to set up EV manufacturing plants in India will benefit from a reduced import duty of 15%. They must also source 25% of their components locally within the first three years, increasing to 50% by the fifth year.

Kumaraswamy also noted that the application window for the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India (SPMEPCI) will open soon.

US Tariffs May Be a Factor

Some speculate that US President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff stance may have influenced Tesla’s hesitation. Trump recently commented that Tesla opening a factory in India would be “very unfair,” echoing similar concerns he raised with Apple CEO Tim Cook when the company considered relocating production from China to India.

Tesla has been evaluating the Indian market for several years, but Elon Musk has cited India’s high import duties as a major obstacle to launching full-scale operations in the country.
