Kerala Minister Criticizes Centre Over Approval of Foreign Aid to Maharashtra

Kerala Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal has strongly criticized the BJP-led Union government, accusing it of bias and undermining federal principles after it allowed Maharashtra to accept foreign contributions for the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF).

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Balagopal said Kerala welcomed assistance for states facing natural disasters but emphasized that the rules must be applied uniformly. He recalled that in 2018, during Kerala’s worst floods in a century, the Centre had denied the state permission to receive foreign aid, even though several countries, including the UAE, had expressed willingness to help.

“Helping disaster-hit states is a positive move, and allowing Maharashtra to receive aid is welcome. However, the Centre’s decision reveals political partiality. When Kerala was devastated by floods, Malayalis worldwide and other nations offered support, but the Centre refused. Now, Maharashtra is granted permission. Is it because both the Centre and Maharashtra are ruled by the same party?” Balagopal asked.

He alleged that such actions damage the perception of equal treatment for all states under the Indian Union.

“Can we blame people in Kerala or elsewhere for feeling the Centre discriminates between states, especially during crises? This attitude weakens the principles of federalism,” he added.

Balagopal also pointed out that the Centre had not yet announced a relief package for Wayanad, which was severely affected by landslides last year. Despite the Prime Minister’s visits—once to the landslide site and more recently for the Vizhinjam port inauguration—no aid was declared.

“There must be fairness in such matters. People expect rule of law and justice. Unfortunately, political affiliation seems to determine the Centre’s decisions, not the severity of disaster or human suffering,” the minister stated.

Last week, Maharashtra’s CM Relief Fund received a license under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010, enabling it to accept international donations after meeting all necessary criteria.

Bar Council Head Supports Influencer Sharmistha Panoli, Labels Arrest a ‘Complete Miscarriage of Justice’

Manan Kumar Mishra, Chairman of the Bar Council of India and senior advocate at the Supreme Court, has voiced strong support for social media influencer and law student Sharmistha Panoli following her recent arrest.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Mishra denounced the arrest as “an absolute failure of justice” and “a blatant assault on freedom of expression,” affirming that he “firmly stands with” Panoli.

Panoli was arrested by Kolkata Police late Friday night from Gurugram, Haryana, for allegedly making ‘communal’ remarks in now-deleted social media videos related to Operation Sindoor. She has been accused of hurting religious sentiments.

Criticizing both the West Bengal government and Kolkata Police, Mishra accused them of engaging in “excessive, selective, and politically motivated action,” targeting individuals from certain communities while disregarding more serious offenses by others.

He cited several incidents, including the Marichjhanpi massacre, the Nandigram violence, and the recent Murshidabad riots—allegedly “state-sponsored”—to argue that the administration repeatedly fails to protect innocent lives and obstructs the deployment of central forces.

Calling the situation “deeply troubling,” Mishra condemned the state government for opposing Operation Sindoor—a counter-terror mission in response to the killing of innocents—while simultaneously suppressing dissent from individuals like Panoli.

Referring to her deleted videos, Mishra argued that her choice of words does not amount to blasphemy and called her arrest an example of scapegoating and punitive overreach.

“True democracy demands impartiality, restraint, and the equal protection of rights—not selective outrage and political vendetta,” Mishra concluded.

Ajay Devgn Defends Deepika Padukone’s 8-Hour Shift Rule Amid Vanga Row: ‘Honest Directors Won’t Mind’

Actor Deepika Padukone’s reported departure from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s upcoming film Spirit has stirred widespread speculation and debate across social media in recent days. Anonymous sources have claimed that the exit was due to what they described as Deepika’s “unprofessional” demands—chief among them being a strict limit of eight working hours per day.

Now, actor Ajay Devgn has publicly supported Deepika’s stance. When asked about the matter at the trailer launch event of Maa, a horror thriller starring Kajol and co-produced by Ajay, he responded in her defense.

Addressing the controversy surrounding the 8-hour workday demand, Ajay stated, “It’s not that it’s being received negatively by everyone. Most honest filmmakers have no issue with it. And let’s be practical—whether someone is a mother or not, many professionals today prefer 8- to 9-hour work shifts.”

He further added, “It really depends on the individual, but I believe the majority of the industry understands and respects such boundaries.”

Background on the Controversy

Earlier this year, Deepika Padukone was confirmed to star opposite Prabhas in Spirit, which would have marked her second pan-India Telugu film after Kalki 2898 AD. However, reports last week indicated that she had opted out of the project after her demands—including the 8-hour workday—were not accepted. Deepika has not publicly commented on the situation.

Following her exit, it was officially announced that actress Triptii Dimri will now play the female lead in Spirit. Triptii recently worked with director Sandeep Reddy Vanga in Animal.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Vanga addressed the situation, alleging that confidential details about the film had been leaked. While he didn’t name anyone directly, his message appeared to take a swipe at the unfolding controversy. “When I narrate a story to an actor, I place 100% faith. There is an unsaid NDA between us. But by doing this, you’ve disclosed the person you really are,” he wrote. He also questioned the misuse of feminism, writing, “Putting down a younger actor and ousting my story? Is this what your feminism stands for?”

Spirit is being jointly produced by T-Series and Bhadrakali Pictures and will feature Prabhas as a fierce and intense police officer. The film is currently in pre-production and is scheduled to begin shooting in 2025.

Modi Slams Mamata Over NITI Aayog No-Show, Accuses TMC of Hindering Progress

Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a sharp rebuke against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during his visit to the state on Thursday, accusing the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of prioritizing politics over progress.

Criticizing Banerjee for her absence from the recent NITI Aayog meeting in New Delhi, Modi stated, “TMC is focused on playing politics round the clock. Development of West Bengal and the nation’s growth are not on their agenda. The Central Government’s welfare schemes are not being implemented effectively in the state.”

He further alleged that the TMC government has blocked 16 major infrastructure projects in the state, which were scheduled for completion last year.

Expanding his criticism, Modi accused the TMC of being indifferent—and even hostile—toward marginalized communities, including the poor, tribals, Dalits, women, and backward classes.

“The development of tribal communities is being deliberately obstructed. TMC has shown disregard for tribal dignity—remember, when the NDA nominated a tribal woman as a presidential candidate for the first time, TMC was the first to oppose it,” he said.

Modi also condemned the TMC for blocking central welfare schemes. “Why is TMC hostile towards the poor, Dalits, women, and the backward classes?” he asked. “The people of Bengal have been denied the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat scheme. The state government refused to distribute Ayushman cards. Many poor families still don’t have proper housing because TMC leaders demand cuts and commissions from them.”

Trump Tariffs Ruled Unlawful by US Court, Raising Hopes and Questions

A U.S. trade court ruling that invalidated most of former President Donald Trump’s tariffs and deemed he had exceeded his legal authority brought a mix of relief and lingering uncertainty to global financial markets on Thursday.

The verdict, which complicates ongoing trade talks, drew restrained responses from key U.S. trading partners. Both Germany and the European Commission declined to comment, citing the ongoing legal process.

“We ask for your understanding that we cannot comment on legal proceedings in the U.S., as they are still ongoing,” stated a spokesperson from Germany’s economy ministry. “We continue to hope for a mutually beneficial resolution between the EU Commission and the U.S. government.”

Markets responded positively in some sectors. Technology firms, banks, luxury goods companies, and auto manufacturers — all of which had previously been hit by tariff-related disruptions — saw gains. The U.S. dollar also strengthened, rising 0.2% against the yen and 0.3% against the Swiss franc, as safe-haven assets weakened. Meanwhile, Wall Street index futures rose by over 1.5%.

The trade court’s decision represents a significant blow to Trump’s tariff-based approach to trade negotiations. Although the administration announced plans to appeal, analysts cautioned that investor sentiment may remain guarded until the legal process plays out.

After an adverse market reaction to Trump’s major tariff announcement on April 2, the administration paused most import duties for 90 days and aimed to pursue bilateral trade deals. However, aside from a recent agreement with the UK, new deals have been slow to materialize. Analysts suggest the court ruling may further deter countries like Japan from entering into agreements too hastily.

The court’s intervention could offer relief to critics of Trump’s tariffs and traders who thrive on market swings. “Assuming the appeal doesn’t succeed in the near term, the key benefit is time to prepare and a limitation on tariff scope — which currently cannot exceed 15%,” said George Lagarias, chief economist at Forvis Mazars.

Trade Turmoil

Trump’s trade war has disrupted industries ranging from luxury fashion and footwear to consumer appliances and automobiles. Companies have struggled with rising raw material costs, broken supply chains, and revised business strategies.

Major corporations such as Diageo, General Motors, and Ford have already withdrawn their annual forecasts. International firms like Honda, Campari, Roche, and Novartis are considering shifting or expanding operations in the U.S. to offset tariff impacts.

As markets processed this latest development, export-heavy European sectors, particularly autos and luxury goods, saw notable gains. The STOXX 600 index rose 0.4%, while France’s CAC 40 — weighted heavily toward luxury and banking stocks — climbed 0.8%.

Investor sentiment was further buoyed by strong earnings from Nvidia, an AI sector leader, reported late Wednesday.

Meanwhile, spot gold fell for a fourth consecutive day, and U.S. Treasury yields rose — a sign of investors pivoting away from safe-haven assets.

Still, analysts warned that the recent rally in stocks could be fleeting. “I think we’re in a period of heightened volatility — more market spikes are likely,” said Kevin Barker, global head of active equities at UBS Asset Management. “But volatility is the friend of the active investor.”

Tata Starbucks Posts ₹135.7 Crore Loss in FY25 Despite 5% Rise in Revenue

Tata Starbucks reported a widened net loss of ₹135.7 crore for FY25, even as its revenue rose by 5% to ₹1,277 crore, according to the latest annual report released by Tata Consumer Products Ltd (TCPL).

The company, a 50:50 joint venture between TCPL and the US-based Starbucks Corporation, had posted a loss of ₹82.16 crore in FY24.

TCPL, which plans to expand its network to 1,000 Starbucks outlets by the end of FY28, attributed the revenue growth to continued store expansion. In FY25, Starbucks opened 58 net new stores and expanded into 19 new cities, bringing its total footprint to 479 stores across 80 cities.

“Revenue from operations reached ₹1,277 crore, marking a 5% increase, driven primarily by an increase in the number of stores,” TCPL noted. The company also highlighted that Tata Starbucks is now the largest organised café chain in India based on the number of outlets.

However, the QSR (Quick Service Restaurant) industry experienced overall demand softness during the year, which led to subdued sales growth and pressured margins.

Despite short-term challenges, Starbucks remains optimistic about its long-term prospects in India. The company noted that while store expansion may proceed at a moderate pace in the near term, it is committed to reaching 1,000 outlets by FY28.

The Indian café market remains significantly under-penetrated when compared to countries with similar GDP per capita, the report observed.

In FY25, TCPL invested ₹125 crore in Tata Starbucks. The company is also eyeing growth through its new vending business, Tata MyBistro, which offers a range of coffee, tea, and beverages tailored for institutional clients.

Lamine Yamal’s Barcelona Contract Until 2031 Could Make Him the Club’s Highest-Earning Player — Here’s Why

0

Barcelona’s teenage football prodigy, Lamine Yamal, has inked a major contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2031, marking the first significant deal of his professional career.

The club officially announced the extension on Tuesday, confirming that the 17-year-old winger signed the contract at Barcelona’s headquarters. Present at the signing were club president Joan Laporta, first vice president Rafa Yuste, and sporting director Anderson Luis de Souza “Deco,” among others.

According to Spanish media, securing Yamal’s future was one of Barcelona’s top priorities this summer. The player himself was eager to finalize the deal early, aiming to enjoy some rest following his UEFA Nations League commitments with Spain in June.

Record-Breaking Deal

Local reports suggest that Yamal’s new contract could make him Barcelona’s highest-paid player, contingent on meeting various performance-related incentives.

As per Goal.com, the agreement includes a base salary of €15 million (£12.5m/$17m) per season, with potential bonuses increasing the total to €20 million (£17m/$23m) annually—equivalent to around £325,000 per week. Interestingly, Barcelona has chosen not to disclose his current release clause, a departure from his previous clause, which was set at an astonishing $1.08 billion.

Yamal’s previous deal was set to expire in 2026. Over the past season, he emerged as a critical figure in Barcelona’s success, contributing 18 goals and 25 assists across 55 appearances, helping the team secure both LaLiga and the Copa del Rey titles.

Already regarded as one of the top talents in world football, Yamal has made 106 first-team appearances—an extraordinary achievement for someone his age. He holds records as the youngest goalscorer in La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa, and is also the youngest player ever to reach 100 appearances for Barcelona.

Following a standout season filled with dazzling performances, Yamal is now considered a strong contender for this year’s Ballon d’Or.

TMC Urges Special Parliament Session in June to Discuss Operation Sindoor

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Wednesday called for a special session of Parliament to be convened in June, prior to the Monsoon session.

The demand for a special session has been gaining traction among opposition parties following the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives. The issue was also raised during an all-party briefing on Operation Sindoor.

Speaking at a press conference, TMC’s Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha, Sagarika Ghose, emphasized the party’s continued support to the government in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack and during Operation Sindoor. She also noted the party’s backing of MP delegations dispatched to foreign nations.

“Having extended our full support to the government, we now endorse the call initially made by MP Kapil Sibal for a special session of Parliament,” Ghose stated. “We urge that this session be convened in June, ahead of the Monsoon session.”

TMC leaders stressed that opposition parties are united in their push for the session. “All parties opposing the BJP are coordinating efforts to press for a special Parliament session,” said Derek O’Brien, TMC’s Parliamentary Leader in the Rajya Sabha.

Operation Sindoor saw India conduct targeted strikes on nine terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7, as a direct response to the Pahalgam attack.

In retaliation, Pakistan launched attempted strikes on Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. India responded firmly to these provocations.

To reinforce its stance of zero tolerance against terrorism, India has since dispatched seven multi-party delegations to key global partners, including members of the UN Security Council. These delegations aim to present India’s position following both the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor.

The delegations are led by BJP’s Baijayant Panda and Ravi Shankar Prasad, JDU’s Sanjay Kumar Jha, Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, DMK’s Kanimozhi, and NCP-SP’s Supriya Sule. They are scheduled to visit 32 countries as well as the European Union headquarters in Brussels.

TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee is part of the delegation led by Sanjay Kumar Jha.

Zelenskiy: Over 50,000 Russian Troops Assembled for Northeastern Ukraine Offensive

Russia has deployed over 50,000 troops — including some of its elite units — near Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said, though he emphasized that Kyiv has taken steps to block a full-scale assault.

This military buildup suggests Moscow may be preparing for a summer offensive, as Ukraine awaits a memorandum from Russia outlining its conditions for resuming ceasefire negotiations.

Sumy lies opposite Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces previously held territory for several months before being largely driven out last month. Zelenskiy noted Ukraine still maintains a limited presence there.

“Their most powerful units are currently stationed on the Kursk front,” Zelenskiy told reporters on Tuesday. “Their goal is to expel our forces from that area and initiate offensive operations toward the Sumy region.”

President Putin has previously stated that Russia seeks a “buffer zone” along its border with Ukraine. Zelenskiy believes this could mean Russia aims to seize a strip of Ukrainian land extending approximately 10 kilometers inward.

In recent weeks, Russian forces have captured at least four border villages in the region and have been gradually advancing along parts of the eastern front near Kostiantynivka. However, Zelenskiy reported that Ukrainian forces recently managed to push Russian troops back by 4 kilometers in that area over a two-day period.

Zelenskiy reaffirmed Ukraine’s readiness to continue peace negotiations in any format. While the next round is expected to occur at a technical level, he expressed openness to a three-way summit involving U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He also stressed the importance of continued U.S. involvement in the peace process, warning against Washington’s potential withdrawal if talks stagnate.

Potential Negotiation Venues

After a recent prisoner exchange — with each side releasing 1,000 captives following a meeting in Istanbul — hopes for a ceasefire remain unfulfilled. Zelenskiy identified Turkey, the Vatican, and Switzerland as the most viable venues for further talks, with Malta and several unnamed African nations also expressing interest.

However, Zelenskiy dismissed Russia’s suggestion to hold negotiations in Belarus, citing its role as a staging ground for Russia’s 2022 invasion, and called the idea unserious.

Looking ahead, he confirmed his participation in the upcoming G7 summit, following an invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose country currently holds the rotating G7 presidency. Zelenskiy also expects to attend the next European Union summit.

On Ukraine’s defense industry, Zelenskiy said the country needs $30 billion this year to fully support the capabilities of its rapidly growing domestic arms sector.

India’s Request Leads Interpol to Issue First Silver Notice to Trace Ex-French Embassy Officer’s Global Assets

The Interpol has issued its first-ever Silver notice following a request from India to trace the global assets of Shubham Shokeen, a former Personnel Visas and Local Law Officer at the French Embassy in Delhi, wanted in a visa fraud case, officials confirmed.

The Silver notice, launched by Interpol in January this year, is part of a pilot initiative aimed at tracking illicit assets across borders. India is among 51 participating nations in this trial phase, during which each country can request up to nine notices. The first Silver notice was issued at Italy’s request.

Interpol’s colour-coded notices serve distinct purposes—Red for arrest, Blue for intelligence gathering, Yellow for missing persons, and now Silver for locating and identifying assets linked to criminal activity. The CBI, Interpol’s nodal agency in India, stated that such notices can help trace properties, vehicles, financial accounts, and businesses acquired through proceeds of crime.

India’s first request was made on May 23 against Shokeen, who, between September 2019 and May 2022, allegedly accepted bribes of ₹15 to ₹45 lakh per applicant to facilitate Schengen visas, using the illicit funds to purchase six properties worth over ₹15.73 crore in Dubai. A Blue notice had already been issued earlier to determine his location.

A second Silver notice was issued on May 26 against Amit Madanlal Lakhanpal, accused by the Enforcement Directorate of launching a fake cryptocurrency, MTC. Lakhanpal allegedly raised ₹113.10 crore from investors without regulatory approval, later misappropriating the funds while impersonating a Ministry of Finance official.

The CBI said the Silver notice would allow member states to exchange information, potentially leading to asset seizure or recovery through bilateral cooperation. Notices have also been requested by Indian agencies such as the ED and Narcotics Control Bureau in other ongoing cases.
