Sitaare Zameen Par Tracking Below Laal Singh Chaddha: Is Aamir Khan at Risk of Another Flop

Aamir Khan is set to return to cinemas this weekend with Sitaare Zameen Par, directed by RS Prasanna. Marking his first release in three years, expectations are high both critically and commercially. However, early trends suggest that audience anticipation isn’t quite reflecting in pre-release box office figures.

Once the undisputed king of the Bollywood box office, Aamir has struggled to reclaim his former glory after the underwhelming performances of Thugs of Hindostan and Laal Singh Chaddha. Hopes now rest on Sitaare Zameen Par to reconnect him with the masses.

While some reports predicted an opening in the ₹10–11 crore range, trade insiders suggest a more modest estimate of ₹5–6 crore net on Day 1 in India. If true, this would be nearly half of Laal Singh Chaddha’s opening of ₹11.70 crore in 2022, which itself was considered a disappointment.

Advance bookings support this outlook. As of 9 AM on Thursday—just a day before release—Sitaare Zameen Par had only managed around ₹1 crore in advance sales, far behind Laal Singh Chaddha’s ₹5.65 crore and Housefull 5’s ₹10.05 crore.

With an estimated budget of ₹80 crore, industry estimates suggest Sitaare Zameen Par needs to earn at least ₹100 crore net in India to be considered a hit. But such a target appears daunting after a slow start. Even recent releases like Jaat and Bhool Chuk Maaf, despite stronger openings, failed to reach the ₹100 crore benchmark.

Still, there remains a glimmer of hope. Aamir’s past successes like Dangal and 3 Idiots gained momentum through strong word of mouth. Dangal, for example, earned ₹32 crore on its second Sunday—outperforming its opening day of ₹29 crore.

What’s Not Working This Time?

Aamir Khan has long been known for his sharp marketing instincts, often turning unconventional films into box office giants. But that same edge seems dulled of late. Trade analyst Atul Mohan notes, “Aamir, once considered a marketing genius, appears let down by his PR strategy this time. He’s giving many interviews, but the message isn’t resonating.”

Directed by RS Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par features Aamir as a basketball coach mentoring a team of children with special needs. The film also stars Genelia D’Souza and introduces 10 debutant actors with special needs, adding a unique emotional core to its narrative.

Stranded Indian Tourist Reaches Iran-Azerbaijan Border, But Struggles Continue

After an arduous 500-km road journey from conflict-hit Tehran, Indian tourist Falguni Dey reached the Astara border between Iran and Azerbaijan on Tuesday evening. However, his troubles are far from over.

Dey now finds himself entangled in bureaucratic hurdles. In order to cross into Azerbaijan and reach Baku — from where he plans to fly back to India — he needs a special migration code issued by Azerbaijani authorities. His valid e-visa is not being accepted at the land border.

“I may have escaped the bombs in Tehran, but I’m now stuck at the Astara border. Without this migration code, they won’t let me enter Azerbaijan, and I’ve been told it could take up to two weeks to process,” Dey shared in a voice message to PTI.

A college professor from Kolkata and an amateur mountaineer, Dey had arrived in Tehran on June 5 for an expedition to Mount Damavand. However, escalating conflict and missile attacks forced him to flee the city by road on June 17.

He now faces immense physical, emotional, and financial strain. “I’m exhausted and running out of funds. My family and friends put in so much effort and money to help me, but it all feels in vain right now,” he said, visibly distressed.

His hotel reservation in Baku had to be cancelled, and his Mumbai-bound flight ticket was voided due to border issues. “No one in Tehran told me I would need a migration pass in addition to my e-visa. I applied immediately, but the authorities say it’ll take at least 15 days to process,” he explained.

Dey added that while many foreigners at the Astara checkpoint were allowed to cross, Indian nationals like him were specifically asked for the migration code.

Amid this crisis, Dey expressed gratitude for the support he’s receiving. Calcutta University Vice-Chancellor Santa Dutta, noted mountaineer Debasish Biswas, and Balaram Shukla, a senior official from the Indian Embassy’s cultural division in Tehran, have all stepped in to assist. Both the Indian embassies in Tehran and Baku are coordinating to resolve his situation.

He described the journey to Astara as difficult, with frequent stops due to fuel rationing in Iran. Still, he was thankful to the driver couple from his local travel agency, who accompanied him all the way, ensuring his safety, offering emotional support, and even bringing him refreshments.

Now, facing continued uncertainty at Astara, Dey is considering a new option — traveling another eight hours to reach the Armenia border, in hopes of securing an alternative route home.

For now, he places his hope in the prayers of his loved ones and the continued efforts of officials working behind the scenes.

On Tuesday, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia confirmed that the central government has officially granted a license to Starlink, the satellite internet venture founded by Elon Musk, to operate within India.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Scindia shared details of a meeting with Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, where they explored potential collaborations in satellite communications. “We discussed ways to leverage satellite technology in advancing Digital India’s goals and expanding connectivity across the country. Ms. Shotwell welcomed the licensing approval, calling it a promising beginning,” he noted.

Starlink delivers high-speed internet to underserved and remote regions through a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Its entry into the Indian market has triggered intense discussions around issues such as spectrum policy and competitive pricing.

Earlier in March, telecom giants Jio and Airtel—who collectively command over 70% of the Indian telecom market—announced strategic partnerships with SpaceX to facilitate Starlink-based services in the country.

Starlink is now the third company to secure a license from the Department of Telecommunications for satellite broadband services, following Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications. Amazon’s Project Kuiper remains under review.

Developed by SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk in 2002, Starlink uses thousands of LEO satellites positioned about 550 km above Earth. This low-latency network enables broadband connectivity suitable

Several international Air India flights, primarily operated by Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, were cancelled on Tuesday, just days after a London-bound Dreamliner tragically crashed into a hostel complex shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on June 12. The accident claimed the lives of all 241 passengers and crew on board.

Ahmedabad to Gatwick Flight Cancelled

Air India confirmed that its scheduled flight from Ahmedabad to Gatwick, London, was cancelled due to aircraft unavailability, attributed to airspace restrictions and precautionary inspections. The airline dismissed reports suggesting a technical malfunction was behind the cancellation.

To mitigate passenger inconvenience, Air India stated that alternate travel arrangements have been made. The airline is providing hotel accommodations and offering full refunds or free rescheduling options for affected passengers.

Delhi-Paris Flight AI143 Also Cancelled

The Paris-bound AI143 flight from Delhi was also grounded on Tuesday following an issue discovered during pre-flight checks. According to an Air India spokesperson, the cancellation was partly due to operational restrictions at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport related to night flights.

The return flight, AI142 from Paris to Delhi, scheduled for June 17, has also been cancelled, according to ANI.

Passengers impacted by these cancellations are being offered hotel stays and the choice of full refunds or complimentary rescheduling.

San Francisco-Mumbai Flight Grounded in Kolkata

In a separate incident, Air India’s San Francisco–Mumbai flight, which included a stopover in Kolkata, was grounded due to a suspected technical issue found during post-landing inspection. All 228 individuals on board, including 211 passengers, were safely deplaned, and some were accommodated at local hotels.

The flight was originally scheduled to depart Kolkata for Mumbai at 2 a.m. on Tuesday. Air India has been rerouting this service through Kolkata due to ongoing geopolitical disruptions, including the closure of Pakistani airspace.

Flight AI180 landed in Kolkata at 12:45 a.m., close to schedule despite a one-hour delay in departure from San Francisco.

IndiGo Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Nagpur

Earlier the same day, IndiGo flight 6E 2706, en route from Muscat to Delhi via Kochi, made an emergency landing in Nagpur after a bomb threat was reported. According to DCP Lohit Matani, all passengers were safely evacuated. Initial investigations have not uncovered any suspicious items.

Juror Dismissed in Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Case Despite Defense Objections Over Race

A juror in Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ ongoing sex trafficking trial has been removed from the panel due to discrepancies in his stated residency. As reported by the BBC, Judge Arun Subramanian dismissed the juror—identified as juror no. 6—after uncovering “several inconsistencies” regarding where he lived. During jury selection, the juror claimed he resided in the Bronx, New York. However, he later informed a court staff member that he had recently moved to New Jersey with his girlfriend.

Defense attorneys for Combs strongly opposed the juror’s dismissal, arguing that removing one of only two Black male jurors would result in substantial prejudice and compromise the racial diversity of the jury.

The issue surrounding the juror’s eligibility first arose last week, when lead prosecutor Maurene Comey called for his dismissal, citing a “lack of candor,” according to the Mirror. Judge Subramanian shared these concerns after further investigation. For this trial, jurors must reside within the Southern District of New York, which includes the Bronx, Manhattan, and parts of the Hudson Valley. Juror no. 6 has since been replaced by a 57-year-old man from Westchester.

Defense lawyer Xavier Donaldson emphasized that the juror’s removal diminishes the representational balance of the jury.

Sean Combs faces multiple serious charges, including sex trafficking, racketeering, and transporting individuals for the purpose of prostitution. If convicted on all counts, he could receive a life sentence. He has pleaded not guilty.

Possible Dismissal of Another Juror Raises Additional Concerns

In a new development, another juror may also face dismissal. TMZ reported that this juror received a suspicious text message from an unknown number asking if he was juror no. 6. The message came shortly after news of the original juror’s removal began circulating.

The juror stated he did not recognize the number. Judge Subramanian, after being informed, expressed concern about potential misconduct, as the communication could imply that jury rules were violated by discussing trial matters with unauthorized individuals. The judge noted that this matter would be addressed after resolving the dismissal of juror no. 6.

PM Modi Lands in Calgary to Join G7 Outreach Session

PM Modi has arrived in Calgary.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Calgary on Monday to attend the outreach session of the G7 Leaders’ Summit, taking place in Kananaskis, a scenic resort nestled in the Canadian Rockies. He is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday afternoon at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge. The meeting was officially confirmed by the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office on Monday evening.

Upon his arrival, Modi shared a message on X, stating, “Landed in Calgary, Canada, to take part in the G7 Summit. Will be meeting various leaders at the Summit and sharing my thoughts on important global issues. Will also be emphasising the priorities of the Global South.”

He was welcomed with a ceremonial reception at Calgary airport, where India’s acting High Commissioner Chinmoy Naik was among the dignitaries present to receive him.

Modi’s Tuesday schedule is expected to be tightly packed with a series of bilateral meetings and informal interactions before the outreach session officially begins. Prime Minister Carney will welcome global leaders and representatives of international organisations, followed by the traditional family photograph.

Later in the day, Carney is set to host a working luncheon focused on energy security, which Modi will also attend. The meeting is drawing significant attention, especially in the context of India-Canada relations.

Ties between the two nations deteriorated in September 2023 after then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged a possible connection between Indian agents and the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia. India dismissed the claims as “absurd” and “motivated.”

Tensions escalated in October when Canada requested the waiver of diplomatic immunity for six Indian officials linked to investigations into alleged “violent criminal activity.” In response, India withdrew the officials—including High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma—and expelled six Canadian diplomats.

Since Mark Carney assumed office earlier this year, signs of a diplomatic thaw have emerged. His invitation to Modi for the G7 summit, despite pushback from pro-Khalistan groups, has paved the way for renewed engagement. The leaders are expected to discuss matters such as enhanced intelligence cooperation and expanding trade ties during their meeting.

Rising Fears of Israel-Iran Conflict as US and China Urge Evacuation from Tehran

Amid intensifying hostilities between Iran and Israel, global powers—including the United States, China, and Israel—have issued urgent advisories for civilians to evacuate Tehran, warning that the conflict could escalate into a full-scale war.

On Monday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) delivered a stark warning via social media, calling on residents in parts of Tehran to evacuate immediately. The message, shared by IDF Arabic spokesperson Col. Avichay Adraee, cited imminent strikes on “military infrastructure” and echoed the tone of previous IDF alerts in Gaza.

The evacuation appeal follows Israel’s military campaign inside Iran, which began Friday with airstrikes targeting nuclear and military installations. Israeli forces claim to have secured air superiority over major regions of Iran, including Tehran, and have launched attacks on critical oil, gas, and missile sites.

Former US President Donald Trump, currently attending the G7 summit in Italy, added to concerns with a dire message on Truth Social: “Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!” Emphasizing his continued opposition to Iran’s nuclear program, he declared, “IRAN CANNOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON.” While stopping short of confirming direct US involvement, Trump hinted at upcoming actions, stating, “As soon as I leave here, we’re going to be doing something.”

Meanwhile, the Chinese embassy in Tel Aviv advised Chinese nationals to leave Israel and the surrounding region via land crossings into Jordan, citing closed airspace, mounting civilian casualties, and a deteriorating security situation.

In response, Iranian officials warned of severe repercussions should the conflict persist. On Monday, Tehran threatened to exit the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), a key agreement curbing the spread of nuclear arms. A government representative stated that “all options” were being considered in light of the Israeli offensive.

Since the onset of hostilities on Friday, Iranian officials report at least 224 fatalities—mostly civilians—while Israeli sources cite 24 dead and over 590 wounded.

The ongoing clash marks the most dangerous escalation between Iran and Israel to date. Though long-standing adversaries engaged in cyberwarfare, covert operations, and proxy battles, the current crisis has heightened significantly since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led assault on Israel. That attack triggered a wave of regional confrontations involving Hezbollah, Iranian-aligned militias, and now, direct military engagement between Iran and Israel.

The possibility of a broader war—with nuclear consequences—now looms large over the Middle East.

Indian Nationals and Students Relocated from Iran Following Israeli Strikes in Tehran Region

India has initiated the relocation of its citizens, including students, from high-risk areas in Iran as hostilities intensify between Iran and Israel. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed on Monday that the Indian Embassy in Tehran is actively working to ensure the safety and well-being of Indian nationals in the region.

“The Indian Embassy in Tehran is closely monitoring the security situation and maintaining engagement with Indian students in Iran to guarantee their safety,” the ministry stated.

“In certain instances, students are being moved to safer locations within Iran with the facilitation of the Embassy,” it added.

The evacuation efforts follow a series of Israeli airstrikes on Iran that began on Friday, which prompted retaliatory attacks from Tehran, significantly escalating tensions across the Middle East.

The Indian mission is also coordinating with local community leaders to support the safety and welfare of Indian nationals, according to the ministry’s update.

Iran’s temporary closure of its airspace during the exchange of strikes further complicated intra-country movement.

As per 2022 figures cited by AFP, approximately 10,000 Indian nationals—including over 2,000 students—reside in Iran.

Maintaining diplomatic relations with both Iran and Israel, India has appealed for restraint and de-escalation. “Existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy should be utilised,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

Previously, New Delhi expressed its readiness “to extend all possible support” to both nations and advised against further escalation.

Iran’s health ministry reported at least 224 fatalities resulting from Israeli strikes, while Israel has confirmed more than a dozen deaths following Iran’s retaliatory attacks since Friday.

Embassy Advisories and Communication Channels

The Indian Embassy had earlier issued a public advisory urging Indian nationals and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) in Iran to remain vigilant and avoid all non-essential travel. The advisory emphasized the importance of staying calm, following safety protocols issued by local authorities, and maintaining contact with the Indian Embassy in Tehran.

To enhance coordination and assistance efforts, the embassy launched a Google form via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, encouraging Indian citizens in Iran to register their details. A dedicated Telegram channel has also been created to provide timely and verified updates on the situation.

“This Telegram link is strictly for Indian nationals currently in Iran,” the embassy clarified in a post, which also included emergency contact numbers for those needing urgent support.

Missing Paris Was Tough’: Sift Kaur Samra on Beating U.S. Shooter for ISSF World Cup Bronze

Sift Kaur Samra showcased impressive form on Thursday, securing a bronze medal in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions event at the ISSF World Cup. The 23-year-old also holds the world record in this event, a feat she achieved while clinching the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games.

Sift Kaur Samra secured the bronze medal with a score of 453.1 in the eight-player final. Norway’s Jeanette Hegg Duestad clinched the gold with 466.9, while Switzerland’s Emely Jaeggi earned silver with a score of 464.8.

Samra had initially been tied for third place with American shooter Sagen Maddalena, both recording 411.6 points at one stage.

In an interview with The Indian Express, Samra shared, “Yes, I was aware that both Maddalena and I were tied after the first elimination series. Up until that point, I had been in fourth place, with the top three remaining unchanged. I knew a medal was within reach. At the time, I didn’t know Maddalena was the Paris Olympics silver medallist.”

“Although we’ve competed in several finals before, missing out on the Paris final made me indifferent to who won the medal. Regardless, the responsibility was on me to perform. I’m happy to have taken a medal at the Munich World Cup, just like last year.”

Commenting on Samra’s technique, national rifle coach Deepali Deshpande noted, “Since kneeling is the first position, many shooters feel nervous or take time to adjust to the wind. Early in her career, Sift took time to master this position, but she has worked hard on it. Despite today’s final being held in a closed range, she demonstrated excellent form.”

Deshpande added, “We’ve focused on reducing unnecessary movement between shots and minimizing head motion during loading and unloading while kneeling. We’re also refining her sling balance. While finals will focus solely on the standing position from 2026 onwards, kneeling will still play a key role in the qualification stage.”

A doctor took to X to share the personal tragedy of losing his cousin in the catastrophic Air India crash in Ahmedabad. The flight, carrying 242 people, crashed into a residential area just minutes after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday. Only one person survived.

Dr. Rishi Bose wrote, “I’m still in shock. My fingers are trembling, my heart is shattered—my cousin is gone. He was in the hostel mess, sharing dreams with friends when the Air India crash took him away. He was meant to return home last week but stayed back. Now he never will.”

Air India Issues Statement

In an official post on X, Air India confirmed: “Flight AI171, bound for London Gatwick from Ahmedabad on 12 June 2025, met with an accident. The Boeing 787-8, 12 years old, departed at 13:38 hrs with 230 passengers and 12 crew. Sadly, 241 lives were lost. The lone survivor is receiving medical care.”

College dean Dr. Minakshi Parikh reported, “Four MBBS students in the hostel were killed, and 19 others were injured—five critically. Two third-year students remain missing.”

She added, “A doctor’s wife also died, and two relatives of other doctors were injured. Three members of a doctor’s family are still unaccounted for. Fortunately, all other doctors and their relatives are safe.”
