How to Store Raw Meat in Freezer Correctly

Storing raw meat in your freezer can be a lifesaver, providing you with a ready supply of ingredients for meals. However, improper storage can lead to foodborne illnesses or simply wasted food. By following these simple guidelines, you can ensure your meat stays safe and delicious for months to come.

1. Airtight Packaging is Key

To prevent freezer burn, which can dry out and discolour meat, it’s essential to wrap it tightly in airtight packaging. Freezer-safe bags or containers are ideal, as they can be sealed to minimize air exposure. For extra protection, consider using a vacuum sealer to remove all air before sealing.

2. Label and Date

Keep track of your frozen meat by labelling packages with the date you stored them. This helps you rotate your stock and ensures you use older meat first. While meat can generally stay fresh in the freezer for up to six months, it’s always a good idea to check its quality before cooking.

3. Cut Raw Meat Before Freezing

If you’re not planning to use the entire piece of meat at once, cut it into smaller portions before freezing. This allows you to thaw only what you need, reducing waste and maintaining freshness. It’s also convenient for meal-prepping or preparing dishes like kebabs or stir-fries.

4. Maintain Proper Freezer Temperature

A consistently cold freezer is crucial for preserving meat. Set your freezer to -18°C or lower to ensure bacteria and germs don’t grow. A higher temperature can compromise the quality and safety of your meat.

5. Avoid Refreezing

Once meat has been thawed, it should not be refrozen. Thawing can cause moisture loss, and refreezing can lead to a loss of texture, flavour, and safety. If you need to refreeze meat, cook it first and then freeze the cooked product.

6. Use Freezer-Safe Containers

For added protection, store meat in freezer-safe containers. Avoid using cheap plastic bags, as they may not be as durable or airtight. Containers specifically designed for freezing are thicker and better at preventing air from entering.

By following these tips, you can confidently store raw meat in your freezer and enjoy delicious, safe meals for months to come. Remember, proper storage is essential for preserving the quality and safety of your food.
