Donald Trump Fails to Secure Peace Prize After Relentless Campaign

The Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, describing her as a “brave woman” recognized for her work promoting democratic rights and advocating for peaceful transition from authoritarian rule in Venezuela.

The announcement comes after months of speculation about whether US President Donald Trump would receive the honor, following his repeated assertions that he deserved the prize for his role in international diplomacy.

Donald Trump’s Peace Prize Campaign

Donald Trump has consistently claimed credit for facilitating peace negotiations globally, including efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict and Israel-Hamas war, though neither conflict has been resolved. The White House supported these claims, recently sharing an image of Trump with the caption “The Peace President.”

Trump also asserted he prevented an India-Pakistan war in May 2025, claims India has disputed. New Delhi maintains that hostilities ceased after Pakistani military commanders requested a ceasefire due to mounting losses, not through third-party mediation.

Pakistan, facing severe economic challenges, has publicly supported Trump’s Nobel candidacy.

Historical Context

Four former US presidents have received the Nobel Peace Prize: Theodore Roosevelt (1906), Woodrow Wilson (1919), Jimmy Carter (2002), and Barack Obama (2009). Obama received the award within his first year in office for nuclear disarmament advocacy and strengthening international diplomacy.

Hours before this year’s announcement, Trump criticized Obama’s prize. “He got it for doing nothing,” Trump said. “Obama got a prize – he didn’t even know what – he got elected, and they gave it to Obama for doing absolutely nothing but destroying our country.”

This Year’s Winner

The Nobel Committee cited Machado’s persistent efforts advocating for democratic governance in Venezuela under challenging circumstances. Her selection recognizes ongoing opposition work against the authoritarian government in Caracas.

Trump has not yet commented publicly on the Nobel Committee’s decision. The White House had engaged in what observers described as an extensive campaign promoting Trump’s diplomatic achievements in the months leading to the announcement.

The Nobel Peace Prize includes a monetary award and is presented annually in Oslo, Norway. Machado’s win highlights the Committee’s focus on grassroots democratic movements and opposition leaders working under repressive conditions.
