Andrew Garfield wants the world to know he will not appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ (2026)—but his track record of misleading the press has left fans deeply skeptical of his denials.
Andrew Garfield on appearing in Avengers Doomsday
During a recent GQ interview, the Oscar-nominated actor addressed speculation about whether he and Tobey Maguire would reprise their Spider-Man roles in the upcoming Marvel ensemble film. His response was unambiguous: “No, unequivocally f*****g no.”
The problem? Andrew Garfield spent the entirety of 2021 adamantly denying involvement in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ only to deliver one of cinema’s most anticipated surprises when he appeared alongside Tom Holland and Maguire. That multiverse team-up became a cultural phenomenon, propelling the film to $1.9 billion at the global box office.
Garfield first donned the Spider-Man suit in 2012’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man,’ but his tenure ended abruptly after ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ underperformed in 2014. Speaking to Esquire last year, he described feeling “left dangling” when the role concluded so suddenly, making his ‘No Way Home’ return particularly meaningful.
Here’s what he said:
Reflecting on that experience, AndrewGarfield revealed initial doubts about the reunion. “I thought Tobey is not going to want to do that. He’ll act every 10 years, much to my chagrin, and I’ve shared that to him,” he admitted. “When I heard that he was kind of leaning in I thought it was either going to be the greatest thing in the world or the worst thing in the world. I am so grateful because it was the most joyful thing ever. All the pressure was on Tom.”
The 42-year-old has expressed openness to future Spider-Man appearances under specific conditions. “I would 100% come back [as Spider-Man]” after ‘No Way Home,’ he said, “if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into. I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.”
With Holland currently filming ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ rumors of Garfield’s involvement have already surfaced. He denied those claims too, acknowledging the credibility problem: “I’m going to disappoint you. Yeah, no. But I know no one’s going to trust anything I say from now on.”
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled for release in 2026.
