Celebrities including Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan condemn Supreme Court’s order on stray dogs

A number of public figures, including Janhvi Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Chinmayi Sripaada, Varun Grover, Vir Das, and Siddharth Anand, have strongly criticized the Supreme Court’s recent directive requiring all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to be moved to shelters. The decision has triggered widespread concern, with several calling it a “death sentence” for the animals.

Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan both shared a message on Instagram urging people to understand the deeper implications of the order. The post questioned the move, arguing that although challenges exist, isolating an entire population of animals is not the answer. The message read, “They call it a menace. We call it a heartbeat. Today, the Supreme Court says take every stray dog off the streets and lock them away. No sun. No freedom. No familiar faces. These aren’t just dogs, they’re part of our everyday lives—guarding shops, waiting outside tea stalls, welcoming kids home. Erasing them isn’t a solution. It’s a failure of compassion.”

The post also called for humane alternatives, such as large-scale sterilisation, vaccination programs, designated feeding areas, and adoption initiatives. It warned that punishing stray dogs sets a dangerous precedent: “Today it’s the dogs. Tomorrow, who will it be?”

Singer Chinmayi Sripaada expressed her dismay on X, saying the ruling reads like a death sentence. She highlighted how many abandoned purebred dogs, once used for breeding, end up on the streets. In her words, “Shelters, really? Since dogs are considered sacred in many Indian traditions, may divine justice prevail.”

Director Siddharth Anand also condemned the move, saying it shows a complete lack of empathy. He questioned who would care for these animals once confined, arguing that many rely on kind-hearted citizens for food and water. “They will starve and suffer. This is nothing short of a death warrant,” he said, while calling for action and public petitions.

Writer and comedian Varun Grover stressed that the root of the stray dog crisis lies in human apathy, not the dogs themselves. He pointed out that individuals and groups trying to sterilise and feed street dogs have often faced resistance from resident associations. “Now, after blocking real solutions, they want to shove the problem into non-existent shelters. That’s not fixing anything,” he said, urging authorities to work with animal welfare groups on lasting, humane strategies.

Actor Vir Das took a more personal route, sharing pictures of the dogs he adopted from the streets. He encouraged Delhi residents to consider taking in local strays, describing them as affectionate, loyal, and low-maintenance. He also called on people to support animal NGOs and act immediately, while legal appeals are still in process. “Every small effort counts. Let humanity show up now,” he wrote.

A Supreme Court bench, led by Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan, ordered that all stray dogs be removed from public spaces across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurgaon. It instructed authorities to build shelters with enough capacity and staff to handle sterilisation and vaccination. The court also warned that any person or group interfering with the enforcement of this directive could face contempt charges. Furthermore, it stated that no stray dog removed from the streets would be returned to its original location.

India’s Tariffs Had Major Impact on Russia, Says Trump: ‘That was a big blow

Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Monday that the tariffs imposed on India due to its purchase of Russian oil have delivered a major economic setback to Russia. Referring to India as either the largest or second-largest buyer of Russian oil, Trump suggested that the trade penalties significantly disrupted Russia’s financial stability.

During a press conference at the White House, Trump argued that his administration’s tariffs, particularly those targeting nations engaged in energy trade with Russia, have intensified the economic strain on Moscow. According to him, Russia’s economy has taken a hit under the weight of these global measures.

Trump had recently approved a steep 50% tariff on Indian goods, implemented in two stages. The initial 25% duty was introduced on July 30, followed by an additional 25% hike on August 7. The tariff hike was formalized through an executive order titled Addressing Threats to the US by the Government of the Russian Federation.

Speaking about Russia’s economic state, Trump remarked, “Russia needs to focus on rebuilding its own country. It’s a massive nation with enormous potential—11 time zones, can you believe it? But their economy isn’t doing well right now. It’s been seriously disrupted by the current tariffs.”

Without directly naming India, Trump pointed out that pressuring one of Russia’s top oil clients through trade restrictions sent a clear message. “It doesn’t help Russia when the U.S. President tells one of their biggest oil buyers we’re slapping a 50% tariff on you. That was a big blow,” he said.

Trump is also scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, August 15, in an attempt to push for a ceasefire in Ukraine, more than three years into the conflict. The meeting will mark Putin’s first visit to the U.S. since 2015.

Commenting on the location, Trump said, “I think it’s very respectful that the Russian President is coming to us. We’re not going to a third country or to Moscow. I expect it to be a productive discussion.”

He also mentioned future plans to connect with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. “The next step will be a direct conversation between Zelensky and Putin—or the three of us, if needed. I’ll be involved if they want me there,” Trump added.

‘I mean D Gukesh had a bad Classical event’: Viswanathan Anand On Why Grandmasters Must Stay Open to All Format

Chess has come a long way from its traditional roots, branching out into various exciting formats beyond the classical setup. Formats like blitz and rapid are now gaining serious momentum, while even unconventional styles such as Chess960 have earned a spot on prestigious stages like the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour.

Recently, Viswanathan Anand encouraged players to keep an open mind toward all styles of the game. While speaking at the Chennai Grandmasters event, he pointed out the importance of being mentally prepared for every format, not just the one you’re most comfortable with.

“Players shouldn’t shut out any format mentally,” Anand said, using D Gukesh’s experience as a teaching moment. “Gukesh didn’t have a great classical outing in Romania, but that doesn’t mean he can’t shine elsewhere. When one format doesn’t go your way, you need to be able to step up in another. You might not always succeed, but the effort matters.”

He also reflected on how quickly the chess world is changing. With new competitions and formats constantly emerging, adaptability has become just as important as skill. “What I can do is share how I handled certain situations, but ultimately, it’s up to the next generation to figure out what works for them,” he added.

Gukesh, who has faced criticism in the past—especially from Magnus Carlsen—for being less effective in faster formats, recently silenced doubters by topping the rapid section of the SuperUnited Croatia Rapid and Blitz tournament. He even defeated Carlsen in their rapid clash. Similarly, R Praggnanandhaa also pulled off a win against Carlsen during the Las Vegas Freestyle Chess Grand Slam.

To top it off, chess recently made its first appearance at the Esports World Cup, played in a rapid 10-minute-per-player format without time increments—further proving that the game is evolving to meet modern demands.

Punjab Launches 12 Mobile Units to Offer Free Cancer Screenings, Initiated by CM Mann

In a major push to improve cancer awareness and diagnosis in rural Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday unveiled a fleet of 12 mobile cancer screening vans in Dhuri. These units are set to travel across the state, offering free diagnostic services and education to residents in remote villages.

The project, launched in partnership with the World Cancer Care Organisation, aims to combat the rising cancer burden by making early detection accessible to all. Each mobile unit is equipped to conduct a range of screenings, including mammograms for breast cancer, Pap smears, PSA tests for prostate cancer, oral exams for mouth and throat cancers, bone density checks, and various blood tests.

CM Mann emphasized that catching the disease early is key to survival. “There’s a fear and stigma around getting tested, but awareness and early diagnosis can be life-saving,” he said, underlining the program’s mission to break such barriers.

Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, chair of the World Cancer Care Organisation, said the initiative also honors Punjab’s freedom fighters. The campaign is targeting widespread awareness by the next martyrdom day of Shaheed Udham Singh, building on the 350 free cancer camps already conducted in memory of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib.

Mann also announced that the first round of 20 screening camps would begin in the villages of Sangrur, marking the starting point of this state-wide outreach.

Gadkari Dismisses Mileage Concerns Over Ethanol Blend, Points Finger at Powerful Lobby

Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday rejected claims that E20 petrol—fuel containing 20% ethanol—leads to lower mileage in vehicles. Responding to a question about growing concerns on social media, Gadkari said, “There’s no real issue here. I don’t know if I should say this politically, but it feels like the petroleum industry is behind this narrative.”

In an interview during a Business Today summit, he challenged critics to point out any vehicle globally that has faced issues due to E20 usage. “I openly challenge anyone—E20 causes no problems at all,” he said.

His comments come just days after the petroleum ministry also clarified that E20 poses no serious risk to engines or vehicle performance. While it admitted that mileage could dip slightly—up to 2% in newer vehicles and around 6% in older models—the ministry said these effects are manageable with regular servicing. Minor part replacements like gaskets or rubber seals might be required after 20,000–30,000 km, especially in older cars, but these are generally low-cost and part of routine maintenance.

Gadkari highlighted broader benefits of ethanol blending, pointing out its role in reducing oil imports and lowering pollution levels. He noted that ethanol production from maize has driven its price up from ₹1,200 to ₹2,600 per quintal, encouraging a threefold increase in cultivation in states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. “This is directly boosting farmer incomes,” he said.

He also argued that such moves could help push agriculture’s contribution to the national GDP from the current 12% to 22%, and called 100% ethanol “the fuel of the future.”

On Wednesday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann appointed 92 individuals to lead and support planning boards across various districts in the state.

In a post on X, the chief minister shared the official order, confirming the selection of 13 chairpersons and 79 members to district-level planning bodies. He explained that the move is intended to boost development efforts across Punjab and to ensure that government schemes are implemented more effectively based on the specific needs of each region.

Congratulating the appointees, Mann welcomed them as part of the Rangla Punjab team. He expressed confidence that they would approach their roles with commitment and work toward the growth and betterment of the state.

An official statement highlighted that the government’s focus remains on delivering public welfare initiatives to all eligible citizens in a fair and inclusive manner. Many of those appointed are known to have ties with the current ruling party.

Bihar to Reintroduce Local Residency Rule in Teacher Hiring Under Nitish Kumar

Nitish Kumar's new policy on education.

With state elections approaching, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a major shift in teacher recruitment policy that favors candidates who are permanent residents of the state. Speaking on Monday, he revealed that upcoming hiring rounds for government school teachers will prioritize applicants who can prove their Bihar domicile status.

He confirmed that instructions have been issued to the education department to revise the recruitment guidelines, with the updated rules set to apply starting from the upcoming Teachers’ Recruitment Examination round 4. The following round, TRE 5, is scheduled for 2026.

Although no specific quota for local candidates was mentioned, the move is expected to significantly influence the nearly 100000 teaching positions expected to be advertised in TRE 4. The official notification for this recruitment drive is anticipated within the coming days.

Historically, the state has conducted teacher hiring exams in 2011, 2019, 2020, and 2023. While the government had previously committed to holding the exam biannually from 2024 onward, that promise has yet to be fulfilled.

This new direction aligns with rising public pressure to secure government jobs for Bihar’s youth and appears aimed at countering opposition calls to implement a full-fledged domicile-based reservation system.

Interestingly, this announcement reverses a controversial decision made in June 2023 when the Bihar government eliminated the domicile requirement for teacher recruitment, triggering widespread protests. At the time, officials defended the removal, citing legal challenges tied to enforcing such a policy.

More recently, the state cabinet had also decided that only women who are permanent residents of Bihar would be eligible for positions under the 35 percent reservation for women introduced in 2016.

In related developments, Kumar last week promised increased honorariums for various support staff in schools including midday meal cooks, night watchmen at secondary and senior secondary institutions, and instructors for health and physical education.

To date, the government has filled 170000 posts through TRE 1 and 70000 through TRE 2. However, TRE 3 saw only 66603 appointments made against nearly 88000 available vacancies.

Gold Prices Stay Stable Amid Rising Trade Frictions and Chip Tariff Threats

Donald Trump's tariffs won't affect gold prices.

Gold prices held relatively stable as markets brushed off renewed trade uncertainty following US President Donald Trump’s latest announcements, including a proposed 100 percent tariff on semiconductor imports.

The precious metal hovered near $3,370 an ounce after slipping 0.3 percent in the previous session. Trump’s remarks, aimed at encouraging chip manufacturers to bring production back to the US, did little to shake bullion’s recent momentum.

Tensions with major trading partners also escalated. The US has raised tariffs on Indian imports to 50 percent in response to India’s continued energy trade with Russia. According to a Kyodo report, Japan may also face increased tariffs on certain goods, despite earlier agreements.

Investors are also watching for Trump’s upcoming nomination of a new temporary Federal Reserve governor. The candidate is expected to support a more dovish monetary stance, which could lead to lower interest rates—a favorable development for gold, which offers no yield.

Gold’s recent upward trend has been supported by growing anticipation of rate cuts, strong demand from central banks, and a global push to reduce reliance on dollar-based assets. Although most of this year’s nearly 30 percent gain occurred in the first four months, continued geopolitical and trade pressures have sustained market interest.

As of 8:42 a.m. in Singapore, gold was up 0.1 percent at $3,373.45 an ounce. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index remained flat, while silver, platinum, and palladium all posted gains.

Shashi Tharoor Demands Action as US Imposes Steep 50% Tariff on India

Shashi Tharoor on India's move.

Congress MP and former international diplomat Shashi Tharoor has raised concerns over what he described as a possible “underlying message” in the United States’ recent decision to sharply raise tariffs on Indian imports, particularly in light of India’s energy trade with Russia. In contrast, China, which imports even more oil from Russia, has been given more favorable treatment, he noted.

“China is buying nearly twice the amount of Russian oil compared to us, yet they’ve been granted 90 days. India has only been given three weeks,” Tharoor said. The first round of a 25 percent tariff took effect on Thursday, with the rate expected to rise to 50 percent later in the month.

Speaking to the press in Hindi outside Parliament, Tharoor suggested that India should consider mirroring the US action if there is no change in policy after the three-week window. “The United States mentioned ‘reciprocity,’ but India doesn’t operate through threats. We should observe the situation and be prepared to act if necessary.”

He argued that India’s average tariff on US imports stands at about 17 percent, raising questions about whether the current US measures truly reflect a reciprocal approach. “It seems there may be another motive behind Washington’s move. The Indian government should analyze the intent behind these decisions and respond wisely.”

Tharoor also appealed to the Indian diaspora in America to engage with US leadership and push for a balanced and fair approach. He pointed to Nikki Haley’s recent statement urging former President Trump to prioritize India over China as an example of the kind of advocacy needed.

Acknowledging the economic implications of the tariffs, Tharoor said that Indian exports to the US, valued at around 90 billion dollars, will inevitably take a hit if costs rise. “A 50 percent hike would make Indian products far less competitive. If countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, or China offer similar goods at cheaper prices, we could lose out,” he warned.

RBI Governor Responds to Trump’s Criticism, Highlights India’s Stronger Economic Growth

Days after former US President Donald Trump referred to India as a “dead economy,” Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra confidently responded by stating that India’s economic performance is strong and that the country is contributing more to global growth than the United States.

Speaking to reporters at the RBI headquarters in New Delhi, Malhotra said India is currently contributing about 18 percent to global growth, compared to the United States’ expected contribution of around 11 percent. He added that the Indian economy is doing well and is on track for further improvement.

India is projected to grow at a rate of 6.5 percent in the upcoming fiscal year, while the International Monetary Fund has estimated global growth at roughly 3 percent for the same period. Malhotra also pointed out that India has maintained an average annual growth rate of 7.8 percent in previous years. He emphasized that the aspirational growth rate should be even higher than the RBI’s 6.5 percent forecast for FY25.

On Wednesday, the RBI decided to keep the repo rate unchanged at 5.50 percent, taking into account the uncertainty brought about by increasing trade tensions with the United States following President Trump’s statements.

The Monetary Policy Committee of the RBI, consisting of six members, voted unanimously to maintain the current rate. This decision followed a surprise 50 basis point cut in June, which was the third such reduction since February.

Addressing Trump’s threats to impose higher tariffs on Indian imports, especially due to India’s continued purchase of Russian crude oil, Malhotra stated that the RBI does not anticipate a significant economic impact unless there is a retaliatory measure. He expressed optimism that a peaceful and practical solution could be reached.

Malhotra acknowledged the changing dynamics of global trade but remained confident in India’s prospects. He said that while global trade challenges continue, India remains well-positioned with sound economic fundamentals and has taken proactive steps to support growth.

He cited strong domestic demand, the possibility of above-average monsoon rainfall, and a steady recovery in rural consumption and agriculture as factors expected to support GDP growth in the coming months.

Despite this positive outlook, Trump’s aggressive trade policies have heightened tensions. On Tuesday, he announced plans to substantially raise tariffs on Indian goods, building on an earlier decision to hike import duties from 10 percent to 25 percent. He also warned of additional penalties over India’s defense and energy deals with Russia.

Trump’s “dead economy” comment sparked criticism from Indian political leaders and business circles alike.

Following the RBI’s decision to maintain interest rates, stocks in interest rate-sensitive sectors such as automobiles, real estate, and banking experienced notable declines.

Bosch fell 4.85 percent to trade at ₹38,617.75
Hyundai Motor India declined 1.95 percent to ₹2,146.15
HeroMoto Corp slipped 1.31 percent to ₹4,482.60
Apollo Tyres dropped 1.07 percent to ₹435.10
Mahindra and Mahindra edged down 0.83 percent to ₹3,183.50 on the BSE

These movements reflect investor concerns amid global trade uncertainties and domestic policy decisions.
