The highly anticipated friendly match between Argentina’s national football team and India, originally scheduled for November 17 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi, has been officially postponed, with organizers citing delays in FIFA permission and unmet hosting requirements.

Official Announcement

Anto Augustine, managing director of Reporter Broadcasting Company—the match sponsor—announced the postponement on social media. Augustine, a Kerala businessman and Managing Director of Emaraj Group International, stated the game will be rescheduled for FIFA’s next international match window, with a new date to be announced shortly.

“Considering the delay in receiving FIFA’s permission, after discussions with the Argentine Football Association (AFA), it has been decided to postpone the match from the November window,” Augustine wrote on Facebook.

AFA’s Explanation

Spanish media outlet La Nacion, citing an AFA official, reported Kerala did not meet requirements to host the match due to “repeated breaches.”

“We did everything possible to make it happen in November; a delegation even travelled to India to see the field, the hotel… but ultimately, India couldn’t meet the requirements. Unfortunately, there were repeated breaches by India, and what we’re going to do is reorganise the contract to find a new date,” the AFA official stated.

Ongoing Uncertainty

Considerable confusion has surrounded the match since Kerala Sports Minister’s initial announcement. At one point, the Minister stated the match was cancelled, though the AFA confirmed in August that their team would play in Kochi.

Recent Argentine media reports suggested the India match might not occur in November, proposing March 2026 as a potential alternative date.

Logistical Challenges

The postponement reflects challenges in organizing international football matches involving world champions, requiring strict FIFA protocols, adequate facilities, and meeting international football standards for venues, accommodation, and logistics.

Fan Disappointment

The delay disappoints Indian football fans anticipating seeing Lionel Messi and the World Cup-winning Argentine squad. The match would have represented a major moment for Indian football, providing exposure to world-class talent while boosting the sport’s profile domestically.

Organizers must now coordinate with FIFA, AFA, and Indian football authorities to identify a suitable date meeting all requirements for the rescheduled friendly.

Air Pollution Deaths Remain Critical Global Health Threat, New Report Reveals

Air Pollution

Air pollution continues to claim millions of lives annually despite improvements in certain regions, according to the State of Global Air 2025 report. The study indicates that while some countries have reduced pollution-related death rates, absolute mortality numbers remain high due to population growth, aging demographics, and persistent exposure in heavily polluted areas.

Cardiovascular Disease Emerges as Primary Killer

The report reveals a significant shift in how air pollution affects human health. Nearly nine in ten pollution-related deaths now result from non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, chronic lung disease, and lung cancer. This data challenges the traditional perception of air pollution as primarily a respiratory issue, with cardiac events and strokes now representing the predominant causes of mortality.

Understanding the Deadly Mechanism

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) poses the greatest threat among air pollutants. These microscopic particles penetrate deep into lung tissue, triggering inflammation that spreads throughout the bloodstream. This systemic response destabilizes arterial plaques, increasing cardiovascular event risk while also affecting blood clotting and vessel function.

Long-term exposure accelerates chronic conditions including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and heart disease. Research from WHO attributes most pollution-related deaths to ischemic heart disease and stroke, followed by COPD, respiratory infections, and lung cancer.

Recommended Protection Measures

While comprehensive solutions require policy interventions such as cleaner energy adoption and industrial regulation, individuals can take immediate protective steps:

Households should utilize clean cooking fuels, ensure proper kitchen ventilation, and avoid burning waste indoors, as household pollution significantly contributes to premature deaths, particularly among children.

During high Air Quality Index (AQI) periods, vulnerable populations—including older adults and those with cardiac or respiratory conditions—should minimize outdoor physical activity. Properly fitted N95 or FFP2 masks can reduce PM2.5 inhalation in severely polluted environments.

HEPA-filtered air purifiers offer indoor protection in high-pollution areas, particularly benefiting vulnerable individuals. Medical experts advise those with existing health conditions to maintain current medications and seek immediate care for symptoms including chest pain, sudden breathlessness, or neurological changes.

The report emphasizes that reducing air pollution mortality requires combined efforts: systemic policy reform alongside household and individual protective measures.

Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu inaugurated the renovated Terminal 2 (T2) at Delhi Airport on Saturday, with operations set to commence Sunday following a six-month closure for renovation works.

Terminal Specifications

T2, originally built by the Airports Authority of India four decades ago, was shut for renovations in April this year. The facility has an annual capacity to handle 15 million passengers.

Vision for Aviation Growth

“India can become one of the world’s largest civil aviation ecosystems,” Naidu stated at the inaugural function. He emphasized that the entire transfer ecosystem should be made more efficient to establish the airport as an international hub.

The minister noted the airport could achieve annual passenger handling capacity of approximately 130 million with efficient space utilization.

Naidu highlighted Delhi airport’s sustainability initiatives, including concentration on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) usage, reflecting growing environmental priorities in aviation sector planning.

Airport Infrastructure

The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), India’s largest airport, operates three terminals—T1, T2, and T3—alongside four runways. The facility handles over 1,300 daily flight movements.

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar stated the airport currently has annual passenger handling capacity exceeding 100 million. DIAL operates IGIA.

Terminal Capacity Distribution

On March 20, DIAL announced the expanded T1 can accommodate 40 million passengers, while T3 can handle 45 million passengers annually. With T2’s 15 million capacity, the airport’s combined infrastructure positions it for significant growth in coming years.

Strategic Importance

The reopening comes as Indian aviation experiences rapid growth, with increasing domestic and international passenger traffic. Delhi airport serves as a critical hub connecting India to global destinations while managing substantial domestic traffic.

Operational Timeline

The six-month renovation period for T2 involved upgrading facilities to meet modern aviation standards and passenger expectations. The terminal’s reopening will distribute passenger loads more effectively across IGIA’s three terminals, potentially reducing congestion during peak travel periods.

The renovation reflects broader infrastructure modernization efforts across Indian airports as the country positions itself as a major global aviation market. The enhanced capacity supports government initiatives to expand connectivity and accommodate growing passenger volumes driven by economic development and increased travel demand.

The Delhi government will enforce a uniform admission age of 6+ years for Class 1 across all government, government-aided, and recognized unaided private schools under the Directorate of Education from academic session 2026-27, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Delhi School Revised Age Structure

According to a DoE circular, the foundational stage will be restructured in a phased manner. Currently comprising Nursery and KG followed by Class 1 with minimum admission ages of 3+, 4+, and 5+ respectively, the revised structure establishes minimum and maximum ages (as on March 31):

  • Nursery (Balvatika 1/Pre-School 1): 3-4 years
  • Lower KG (Balvatika 2/Pre-School 2): 4-5 years
  • Upper KG (Balvatika 3/Pre-School 3): 5-6 years
  • Class 1: 6-7 years

School heads may grant age relaxation up to one month in both minimum and maximum limits for Nursery through Class 1 admissions.

Implementation Timeline

The new age criteria will not apply to students in the current 2025-26 academic session. Lower KG and Upper KG will be introduced only from 2027-28. Students in Nursery, KG, and Class 1 during 2025-26 will be promoted according to the current structure in 2026-27.

New KG admissions in 2026-27 will be open to children aged 4+ years as of March 31, 2026.

Exemptions

Students possessing valid School Leaving Certificates and mark sheets from recognized schools will be exempted from age-appropriate criteria when seeking admission to the next higher class.

From academic session 2027-28, Lower KG (Balvatika 2/Pre-School 2) and Upper KG (Balvatika 3/Pre-School 3) will be formally introduced, with admissions following the specified age criteria.

Communication Requirements

The circular noted school heads were previously informed about foundational stage restructuring and uniform Class 1 admission age.

The Directorate has directed all school heads to clearly inform parents about these changes and ensure strict compliance with revised age criteria for admissions and student progression.

Policy Alignment

The changes align with NEP 2020’s emphasis on age-appropriate learning and structured foundational education, aiming to standardize admission practices across Delhi’s diverse school landscape while ensuring developmental readiness for formal academics.

Macron Pushes Brussels To Get Tough On China With Its Most Powerful Trade Option

French President Emmanuel Macron urged European Union leaders to consider activating the bloc’s most powerful trade mechanism against China if talks fail to resolve Beijing’s proposed export restrictions on critical raw materials. According to people familiar with the discussions, Macron told other heads of state that the EU should be ready to use every tool at its disposal, including the anti-coercion instrument, during a summit in Brussels. The French presidency did not issue a public response to the remarks.

Speaking to reporters after the summit, Macron described China’s new export measures as “economic coercion” and emphasized their potential impact on Europe’s industries. “We can see the impact it is having on us and we need to be able to respond,” he said.

Earlier this month, China announced stricter rules on the export of rare earths and other essential materials. The move would require exporters to obtain licenses if their products contain even trace amounts of Chinese-sourced rare earths. These elements are vital for electric vehicle batteries, renewable energy technology, and defense manufacturing, raising concerns about Europe’s supply security.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed that leaders discussed the possible use of the anti-coercion instrument but said no decision had been reached. The responsibility now lies with the European Commission, which manages trade policy for the EU, to assess whether to implement the measure.

The anti-coercion instrument, which has never been put into action, was originally designed as both a deterrent and a response mechanism against nations using trade pressure to influence EU policies. Potential countermeasures under the tool could include tariffs, taxes on technology companies, or restrictions on Chinese investments and access to European public contracts.

The policy emerged from Europe’s effort to strengthen its trade defenses following the tariffs imposed by the US during Donald Trump’s presidency and China’s earlier decision to limit Lithuanian imports after Taiwan opened a trade office in Vilnius.

While the use of such a tool remains unlikely for now, as it could heighten tensions with Beijing, France has previously advocated for it, including during negotiations with Washington. Still, the proposal has yet to gain broad support across the bloc.

Meanwhile, the European Commission is preparing alternative strategies in case diplomatic efforts with China fail. Reports suggest that a list of potential trade measures could be finalized by the end of the month to strengthen the EU’s negotiating stance. The commission is also drafting a plan to secure alternative sources of critical materials and protect short-term supply chains.

EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic recently held discussions with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao about the export curbs. After their conversation, Sefcovic told reporters, “We have no interest in escalation. However, this situation casts a shadow over our relationship, therefore a prompt resolution is essential.”

Cloud Seeding Vital For Delhi, Says Rekha Gupta Ahead Of Experiment With Artificial Rain

0

Amid rising air pollution levels after the Diwali festival, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday described cloud seeding as a “necessity” for the national capital. Her remarks came a day after she unveiled plans to induce artificial rain in the city.

“Cloud seeding is a necessity for Delhi and is the first experiment of its kind. We want to try it in Delhi to see if it can help us control this very serious environmental problem,” CM Gupta told ANI.

She added, “So the blessings of the people of Delhi are with the government, and we feel that this will be a successful experiment and in future, we will be able to overcome these environmental problems.”

Following a trial in the Burari area of New Delhi, CM Gupta announced that if weather conditions remain favourable, the capital could experience its first artificial rain next week.

“According to the weather department, cloudy conditions are expected on October 28, 29, and 30. If the weather remains favourable, Delhi is likely to witness its first artificial rain on October 29,” she wrote on X.

Gupta emphasized the significance of the initiative, saying, “This initiative is not only technologically historic but also establishes a scientific approach to combatting pollution in Delhi. The government aims to clean the capital’s air and balance its environment through this innovation.”

Air quality in Delhi-NCR has taken a significant hit following Diwali, with firecrackers across the city and surrounding regions pushing pollution levels into the ‘severe’ category.

Experts noted that the onset of winter typically worsens air quality. However, they highlighted that pollution in the capital shifted dramatically over the past month. During the first 19 days of October, photochemical pollutants like ozone and carbon monoxide dominated the air, while particulate matter, including PM10 and PM2.5, took over in the four days following Diwali.

Experts told HT that this pattern reflects a sharp increase in combustion-driven emissions, primarily from firecrackers, with additional contributions from vehicles, industries, and local burning. Starting October 20, the day of Diwali, ozone and carbon monoxide largely disappeared from the AQI charts, replaced by particulate matter.

India-EU FTA Discussions Gain Momentum As Piyush Goyal Meets Trade Commissioner

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held a constructive meeting with EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic, where both sides discussed ways to positively resolve the remaining issues surrounding the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Following the meeting, Goyal shared on X that “the shared commitment on both sides towards redefining the relationship is deeply encouraging.”

Sefcovic, in a post on X, expressed satisfaction over reconnecting with Minister Goyal ahead of his upcoming visit to Brussels. “Our goal remains the same – to keep making progress and elevate the trade and investment relationship to a new level,” he said.

Negotiations for the India-EU Free Trade Agreement were relaunched on June 17, 2022, after nearly a decade-long pause. The discussions aim to strengthen economic ties between two of the world’s largest markets.

The European Union continues to be India’s biggest trading partner, with trade in goods valued at EUR 124 billion in 2023, representing 12.2% of India’s total trade. India, in turn, stands as the EU’s ninth-largest trading partner, accounting for 2.2% of the EU’s total trade in goods. Trade in services between both sides also saw strong growth, rising to EUR 59.7 billion in 2023 from EUR 30.4 billion in 2020.

Both India and the EU have committed to concluding the Free Trade Agreement by the end of 2025. This goal follows the strategic roadmap set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the Commission’s landmark visit to New Delhi in February 2025.

In parallel, India has been accelerating its engagement on free trade agreements with several key global partners. The country is currently in advanced discussions with the United States, the European Union, Australia, and Sri Lanka, among others, as part of its broader strategy to expand trade networks and ensure long-term economic resilience.

Talks are also underway for bilateral trade agreements with nations such as New Zealand, Oman, Chile, South Korea, and Peru. The months ahead are expected to be pivotal, as the outcomes of these negotiations could significantly redefine India’s role in the global trade landscape and influence its economic direction for years to come.

Trump Kicks Off Asia Tour, Aims To Strike New Agreements With Xi Jinping

US President Donald Trump is preparing for a high-stakes trip to Asia this week, drawing international attention as he eyes a potential meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping that could reshape global economic dynamics.

Speaking on Wednesday, Trump described his upcoming visit to Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea as a “big trip,” marking his first journey to the region since returning to the White House amid renewed trade disputes and tense diplomacy. While the itinerary remains largely under wraps, Trump has suggested that his expected face-to-face with Xi in South Korea may still be uncertain, reflecting the volatile nature of US-China relations.

The White House has yet to release specific details about the trip, but Trump has been vocal about his goal to strike a “good” trade deal with China and bring an end to the tariff war that has disrupted markets across the world. Host nations, meanwhile, are preparing lavish receptions in an effort to maintain favor with the unpredictable American leader while securing better trade and security terms.

The first stop on Trump’s itinerary is Malaysia, where he will attend the ASEAN summit from October 26 to 28 — an event he notably skipped multiple times during his first term. Alongside discussions on regional trade, he is also expected to witness the signing of a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, a move his administration has promoted as part of broader diplomatic achievements. “President Trump is keen to see the more positive results of the peace negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia,” Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Wednesday.

Trump may also meet Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on the sidelines of the summit to reset relations after months of diplomatic friction, according to officials from both countries.

From there, Trump will head to Tokyo, where he is scheduled to meet Japan’s newly appointed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the first woman to hold the position. Japan has largely avoided the harshest of Trump’s tariff measures, but the US president is expected to push Tokyo to curb its imports of Russian energy and align with Western allies in expanding defense spending.

The final and most anticipated leg of Trump’s trip is South Korea, where he will attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit beginning October 29. The long-awaited meeting with Xi could be the first between the two leaders since Trump’s return to power, potentially offering a chance to ease trade tensions. However, Trump’s frustration with China’s restrictions on rare earth exports and his recent tariff escalations have cast doubt on the tone of the encounter.

“I hope to make a deal with Xi on everything,” Trump said Wednesday, adding that he believed the Chinese leader could play a significant role in convincing Russia’s Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine. Still, he admitted earlier in the week that the meeting “maybe won’t happen.”

Experts caution that expectations should remain modest. “The meeting will be a data point along an existing continuum rather than an inflection point in the relationship,” said Ryan Hass, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

South Korea, hoping to strengthen its economic partnership with Washington, is reportedly considering awarding Trump the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, the nation’s highest honor, during his visit.

Adding further complexity to the trip, North Korea launched several ballistic missiles on Wednesday, just days before Trump’s arrival. Although Trump has expressed interest in meeting Kim Jong Un again — following their historic summits during his first term — there has been no confirmation from the White House that another encounter is being planned.
