Punjab Creates Record by Becoming the First State to Launch Bharat Net Scheme

Punjab has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the first state in India to fully roll out the revised BharatNet scheme, a project that promises to redefine its digital landscape. Chief Secretary K.A.P. Sinha received the award for this accomplishment from BSNL CGM Ajay Kumar Karara and called it a historic moment for the state’s 30 million residents. With high-speed internet already operational across 43 blocks, officials confirmed that by the end of November, every village in Punjab will be connected to the national Digital India network.

The success of this project represents far more than just an infrastructure upgrade. It is a symbol of effective governance and commitment. While many government schemes across India struggle to move beyond planning stages, Punjab has delivered tangible results. More than a thousand kilometers of fiber-optic cables have been laid so far, a distance that far exceeds the stretch between Delhi and Ludhiana. The government’s campaign to ensure every household and panchayat has access to the internet reflects the state’s vision of inclusive and sustainable growth.

The digital revolution is expected to bring sweeping changes to Punjab’s agricultural sector, which supports nearly 60 percent of its population. Farmers will now be able to check real-time market prices, receive weather forecasts, and apply for welfare programs such as MSP and PM-KISAN without leaving their homes. Direct access to buyers will cut out middlemen, helping farmers secure better earnings and make informed decisions about their crops.

For the younger generation, the project opens a world of opportunity. Many online professions ranging from digital marketing and content creation to design and data management have long been out of reach for rural youth due to poor internet connectivity. Now, students and professionals from districts like Amritsar, Muktsar, Jalandhar, and Fazilka can compete on equal footing with their urban counterparts. The need to migrate abroad in search of work may gradually decline as new career possibilities emerge right at home.

In education, this initiative could transform government schools across the state. More than three million children will gain access to online classes, lectures from top institutions like the IITs, and free educational resources available on digital platforms. This will help narrow the gap between rural and urban education standards and empower students from low-income families with quality learning tools.

Healthcare in Punjab’s rural areas is also set to improve dramatically. Telemedicine facilities will allow patients in distant villages to consult doctors from major hospitals such as PGI Chandigarh and Amritsar’s leading institutions via video calls. This means that medical expertise will no longer be confined to cities, and timely access to treatment could save countless lives.

The initiative also carries significant social implications for women. With the internet now at their fingertips, women will be able to start online businesses, enroll in virtual training programs, access government benefits, and handle digital banking independently. Such empowerment will promote economic independence and enhance their role in community development.

Chief Secretary Sinha described the achievement as a collective victory for the people of Punjab rather than a government milestone. He said that the project was not merely about connecting wires and signals but about connecting dreams and aspirations. He pointed to the newly installed Wi-Fi in Ramkalwan, a border village in Pathankot, as a powerful symbol of how deeply committed the state is to inclusivity. Calling the recognition a tribute to the spirit of every Punjabi, he concluded that this was the beginning of a new chapter where technology would help build a more progressive, connected, and empowered Punjab.

‘Pensioner Sewa Mela’ To Be Organized by Punjab Govt Across District Treasury Offices From Nov 13–15

Punjab Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema announced on Tuesday that a special three-day event titled Pensioner Sewa Mela will be held across all District Treasury Offices in the state from November 13 to November 15, 2025. The objective of this initiative is to help government pensioners complete their mandatory e-KYC process and register on the newly introduced Pensioner Sewa Portal.

Cheema explained that the Punjab government launched this digital platform on November 3, 2025, as a comprehensive one-stop solution for pension-related services. He invited all pensioners to visit their nearest District Treasury Office during the event to complete their registration and experience the benefits of digital governance firsthand. “This is part of our effort to ensure that pensioners can access their benefits and services in a simple, transparent, and efficient way,” he said.

The Pensioner Sewa Portal, available at https://pensionersewa.punjab.gov.in, offers six key online services to users. These include submitting digital life certificates via the Jeevan Pramaan mobile app, applying for conversion of pension into family pension, availing Leave Travel Concession (LTC), submitting grievances, and updating personal details. The Jeevan Pramaan app can be downloaded from both Android and iOS stores, making it easily accessible to all pensioners.

According to the Finance Minister, the registration process on the portal has been designed to be simple and user-friendly. Pensioners can authenticate their Aadhaar details online through the e-KYC feature on the portal and access services using their login credentials. These services can also be availed through multiple channels such as Sewa Kendras, Pension Disbursing Banks, District Treasury Offices, or even through home delivery options for those unable to travel.

To ensure smooth implementation and quick grievance resolution, the government has also set up a dedicated War Room at the Directorate of Treasuries & Accounts, Pension, and New Pension Scheme. The War Room will monitor issues faced by pensioners and coordinate solutions in real-time. Additionally, three helpline numbers — 18001802148, 01722996385, and 01722996386 — have been activated and will operate on all working days from 9 AM to 5 PM to address pension-related queries and technical difficulties.

Cheema emphasized that the initiative reflects the Punjab government’s commitment to transparency, digital empowerment, and senior citizen welfare. By bringing services online, the government hopes to eliminate unnecessary paperwork, reduce delays, and make pension management more efficient and accessible for every retired employee in the state.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann expressed deep gratitude as he flagged off the first group of devotees traveling to the holy city of Amritsar under the Chief Minister’s Pilgrimage Scheme. Mann said he felt blessed to be given the opportunity to serve the people through an initiative inspired by the teachings of the Sikh Gurus, especially Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, whose 350th martyrdom anniversary the pilgrimage commemorates. He explained that the program embodies the principles of harmony, unity, and brotherhood that the Gurus stood for, and it aims to help people connect spiritually with Punjab’s sacred heritage.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the scheme allows devotees from all walks of life—irrespective of caste, religion, or economic status—to visit revered religious and historical sites. The first group of travelers will tour Sri Harmandir Sahib, Durgiana Temple, the Bhagwan Valmiki pilgrimage site, Jallianwala Bagh, the Partition Museum, and other important locations in Amritsar. Mann noted that many senior citizens had long desired to visit such holy places, and this scheme fulfills that long-standing wish by making travel both accessible and comfortable.

Providing details of the arrangements, the Chief Minister shared that devotees aged 50 and above were eligible to register for the trip, with voter identification required for verification. The government has arranged free air-conditioned buses, hotel accommodation, and meals for a three-day and two-night stay. Each bus will have an assistant to assist travelers, and a medical team will accompany every group to ensure safety and immediate medical help in case of emergencies. At the end of the pilgrimage, prasad will be distributed to all participants as a token of blessings and gratitude.

Mann said the pilgrimage scheme, which officially began on October 29, 2025, from the village of Bardhwal, reflects the Punjab government’s dedication to promoting social and religious unity. Devotees for this round of travel were chosen transparently through a draw system, ensuring fairness and inclusivity. He described the initiative as a “humble yet heartfelt” step to strengthen Punjab’s cultural and spiritual bonds.

Calling Punjab the sacred land of saints, martyrs, and spiritual leaders, the Chief Minister urged citizens to participate actively in upcoming religious gatherings organized across various districts. He emphasized the significance of events commemorating the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, particularly at Sri Anandpur Sahib, where major programs are scheduled. Mann also announced that the state has prepared a full calendar of events to mark this historic anniversary.

He reiterated that the government’s goal is to make it easier for people to visit and experience the holy and historical sites across the country. “This is not just a journey of faith,” Mann said, “but a journey of unity and gratitude to those who shaped our moral and spiritual identity.”

Al Falah College Linked to Delhi Blast Probe, Regulator Actively Tracking the Case

The medical education regulator is closely monitoring the ongoing investigation into the recovery of ammonium nitrate, other explosive materials, and firearms in Faridabad, as well as the car blast in Delhi, after Al Falah Medical College emerged as a key focus of the probe, officials said on Wednesday.

Umar Un Nabi, a faculty member at the college, is believed to have been driving the car that exploded near the Red Fort. Investigators have identified Room 13 in Building 17 of Al Falah Medical College as a crucial location in their inquiry into both the Delhi blast and the seizure of explosives from Faridabad’s Dhauj and Fatehpur Taga villages.

According to officials, the room was occupied by Muzammil Ahmad Ganaia from Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir. Police suspect that the accused used the room to plan logistics and transport routes for ammonium nitrate that was intended for multiple attacks.

The National Medical Commission (NMC), which regulates medical education in India, has not yet sent any formal communication to the college. Officials said that further action would be taken once the investigation reports are received from the concerned agencies.

“The matter is currently under investigation. As the medical regulatory authority, the NMC will take appropriate action in accordance with statutory regulations once the findings of the investigating agencies are received,” an NMC official said on condition of anonymity.

Al Falah Medical College, which operates under Al Falah University, received NMC approval to admit its first batch of MBBS students in 2019.

Bhupinder Kaur, the vice chancellor of Al Falah University, stated that the institution has no involvement in the alleged terror module or the Delhi blast beyond the professional work of the doctors employed there. She also denied that any ammonium nitrate or related chemicals were ever stored on the university premises and said that the administration is fully cooperating with investigating authorities.

Meanwhile, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) officials raised questions about the university’s claims on its website that its engineering and education schools were accredited by NAAC. They clarified that the accreditation had expired years ago.

According to NAAC officials, the university itself has never been accredited. Its engineering college received an A grade in 2013 and its teacher education school in 2011, both of which have since lapsed, as accreditation is valid for only five years.

“We will write to the university asking them to correct the information on their website, as it violates our norms. Since we are not a statutory body, we cannot take direct action against them. However, we will inform the University Grants Commission (UGC) and request that they take suitable action for misrepresentation,” a NAAC official said.

Neither the UGC nor Al Falah University officials responded to requests for comment regarding the accreditation issue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Bhutan’s former king Jigme Singye Wangchuck and participated in the Kalachakra initiation ceremony as part of the Global Peace Prayer Festival in Thimphu on Wednesday.

As Modi wrapped up his two-day visit to Bhutan, India reaffirmed its strong support for Bhutan’s 13th five-year plan, which includes an economic stimulus package aimed at promoting sustainable growth and achieving key national development goals. India also expressed its continued backing for the Gelephu Mindfulness City, a major economic hub being developed near the Assam border.

Following his meeting with the former king, Modi praised Jigme Singye Wangchuck’s long-standing efforts to strengthen India-Bhutan relations. “Discussed cooperation in energy, trade, technology and connectivity. Lauded the progress in the Gelephu Mindfulness City Project, which aligns with our Act East Policy,” Modi said in a post on social media.

Modi also joined Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and former king Jigme Singye Wangchuck in inaugurating the “Kalachakra Wheel of Time Empowerment” at the Global Peace Prayer Festival. The ceremony was led by Bhutan’s chief abbot Je Khenpo.

“This is an important ritual with great cultural significance for Buddhists around the world. The Kalachakra Empowerment is a part of the ongoing Global Peace Prayer Festival which has brought together devotees and scholars of Buddhism to Bhutan,” Modi shared online. More than 30,000 people, including international visitors, attended the event.

During his meetings with Bhutan’s leadership, Modi reiterated India’s unwavering commitment to supporting the country’s 13th five-year plan, for which New Delhi has pledged ₹10,000 crore. He also assured full cooperation in the development of the Gelephu Mindfulness City, including the establishment of an immigration check post at Hatisar in Assam to make it easier for investors and visitors to reach the upcoming economic zone, according to a joint statement.

Following the inauguration of the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric project on Tuesday, India and Bhutan also agreed to resume work on the dam structure of the 1,200 MW Punatsangchhu-I project and ensure its early completion. Once finished, it will become the largest hydroelectric venture jointly developed by the two nations.

India is also working to involve Indian companies in new hydropower projects in Bhutan, which will benefit from a ₹4,000 crore concessional credit line for energy initiatives announced earlier this week.

The joint statement further highlighted both nations’ shared focus on enhancing cross-border connectivity and border infrastructure, including setting up more integrated check posts. Both sides welcomed the operationalisation of the Darranga immigration post in November 2024 and the inland waterways terminal and logistics park at Jogigopha in March.

India has also institutionalised mechanisms to ensure uninterrupted supplies of essential goods and fertilisers to Bhutan. The two countries noted the successful delivery of the first fertiliser consignment under this new arrangement.

As a gesture of friendship, Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck personally came to the airport to see off Prime Minister Modi at the end of his visit.

Red Fort Blast: Lal Quila Metro Station will remain closed Wednesday as a precautionary measure following Monday’s high-intensity blast near Red Fort that killed at least 10 people and injured 20 others.

Metro Closure

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation announced on X: “Due to security reasons, the Lal Quila Metro Station shall continue to remain closed on November 12. All other stations are functional as normal.”

The station remained shut for commuters Tuesday as well, following Monday evening’s explosion near the Red Fort. The closure extends security measures implemented immediately after the attack.

Business Impact amid Red Fort Blast

Nearby markets displayed a deserted appearance due to the tragedy and traffic restrictions, with shopkeepers expressing concern over significant business losses during the crucial festive season.

Bachoo Choudhury, a shopkeeper in Lajpat Rai Market, stated: “We work for two months. One day of work is equal to one month’s worth.”

He added: “We have enough stock to last two months. The rest of the year, we sit idle as there isn’t much work. How will tourists come now? Our business depends mostly on them. When tourists don’t come, we are already at a loss, and all our stock will go bad.”

Wholesale Market Concerns

Traders from Sadar Bazaar predicted business would remain affected for several weeks. A retailer explained: “For one month, traders will not come here. The wholesale market in Sadar Bazaar, which is India’s most famous market, along with Chandni Chowk, all come under the same umbrella. Traders come from faraway places to buy materials.”

Investigation Status

The blast investigation continues, with police examining CCTV footage and questioning 13 suspects. Four individuals were detained during overnight hotel raids in Central Delhi’s Paharganj and Daryaganj areas.

Dr. Umar Mohammad, member of a radical doctors group with links to Jaish-e-Mohammed, is at the investigation’s center. Authorities discovered he procured two additional cars beyond the Hyundai i20 used in the attack, believed to be part of the terror conspiracy.

Security Measures

The metro station closure reflects heightened security in the area as investigations progress. The incident has prompted extensive security reviews for public spaces near historical monuments and high-traffic areas across the capital.

The economic impact on traders coincides with the festive season, traditionally a crucial period for businesses in Old Delhi’s markets.

Red Fort Blast Probe Uncovers 2 Additional Cars Procured by Terror Module

Red Fort Blast: Investigators have discovered that the suspected suicide bomber and his associate procured two additional cars from Delhi beyond the Hyundai i20 used in Monday’s Red Fort blast that killed nine and injured two dozen, NDTV has learned.

Additional Vehicles

Limited information is currently available about these vehicles, but they are believed to be part of the terror conspiracy now being investigated. The high-intensity blast occurred Monday evening near Gate 1 of Red Fort Metro Station.

Key Suspects in Red Fort Blast

Umar Nabi, the suspected bomber, has been identified as a doctor with links to Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed. Aamir Rashid Mir, who worked in Kashmir’s power department, and his family are accused of assisting Umar.

The Jammu and Kashmir State Investigation Agency has assumed control of the investigation into the Jaish module.

Investigation Scope

Police are studying databases of all arrested and detained individuals, carefully examining Aadhaar cards and driving licenses while scanning call logs, WhatsApp, Telegram, and travel history. Aamir is being questioned alongside his plumber brother Umar Rashid, 30, and another suspect, Tariq Malik—none yet arrested.

Female JeM Operative

Dr. Shaheen Saaed, arrested with an assault rifle and ammunition in her car, is among those being probed. She worked at Al-Falah University in Faridabad, approximately 45 km from Delhi.

Sources indicate she headed the India branch of JeM’s women’s wing, Jamaat ul-Mominaat, led by JeM founder Masood Azhar’s sister Sadia Azhar in Pakistan.

University Connections

In Red Fort Blast, three other detained doctors who worked at the university are likely to be released as their connection to any terror module hasn’t been established.

Kashmiri doctor Muzammil Ganale alias Musaib, who also worked at the same university, remains in custody after arrest with 2,900 kg of bomb-making explosives. He maintained contact with Dr. Saeed.

White Collar Terror Network

The Red Fort Blast Probe has highlighted what authorities describe as a “white collar terror ecosystem” using professional networks for recruitment, funding, and logistics. The involvement of highly educated medical professionals signals a fundamental shift in how terrorist organizations identify recruits, according to security agencies.

The investigation continues expanding as authorities trace connections, vehicle procurement chains, and communication networks within the suspected terror module.
