Chickenpox Virus

Amid a backdrop of multiple health crises in India, including concerns over the Nipah virus, a resurgence of COVID-19 cases, and a surge in mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue and malaria, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune have identified a new variant of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) that causes chickenpox. Termed the Clade 9 VZV, this variant has raised questions about its characteristics, origins, and potential impact on vulnerable populations.

Termed the Clade 9 VZV, this variant has raised questions about its characteristics, origins, and potential impact on vulnerable populations. In this article, we provide answers to frequently asked questions about this newly detected chickenpox variant.

Chickenpox and the Clade 9 VZV

The varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is responsible for chickenpox, which leads to shingles in adults as well. The Clade 9 strain of VZV was previously prevalent in countries like Germany, the UK, and the US. However, a recent study identified Clade 9 VZV in India alongside the known Clade 1 and Clade 5 variants. Clades represent subtypes originating from a common ancestor.

Symptoms of Clade 9 VZV

Symptoms of Clade 9 VZV infection resemble typical chickenpox and include itchy rashes that evolve into blisters and scabs, along with fever, tiredness, loss of appetite, headache, and fatigue. Unlike regular chickenpox, this variant exhibits a faster progression of rashes.

While Clade 9 VZV is newly identified in India, there is no evidence of increased disease severity compared to regular chickenpox. The treatment remains the same, focusing on symptom relief through over-the-counter medications, soothing baths, and hydration. Severe cases or complications, such as central nervous system involvement, necessitate immediate medical attention.

Preventing Varicella-Zoster Infection

Vaccination for children, following medical advice and immunization guidelines, is the primary defense against chickenpox. Although breakthrough infections can occur post-vaccination with milder symptoms, practicing good hygiene, including regular handwashing, can reduce the risk of infection. Chickenpox is contagious from 1 to 2 days before rash onset until scabs form, emphasizing the importance of avoiding close contact with infected individuals during this period.

As a result of the emergence of the Clade 9 VZW variant in India, monitoring and genomic surveillance of infections is increasingly relevant throughout the country. Even though the variant does not pose a higher risk, it is essential to know potential threats. Till then, everyone is asked to follow proper hygiene measures as India goes through major health challenges.

Cash-Crunched Dunzo to Relinquish Bengaluru Office Space in Cost-Cutting Move

Dunzo’s Cash Crunch Condition

Dunzo, the quick-commerce company, is set to vacate its office space in Bengaluru as part of cost-cutting measures aimed at addressing its ongoing financial challenges. Co-founder and CEO Kabeer Biswas informed employees of this decision during a town hall meeting held on September 15. The move comes at a time when Dunzo has been grappling with cash flow issues, leading to delayed salary payments to its staff.

Dunzo has been struggling to manage its cash flow, a situation exacerbated by the financial strain it faces. The company was initially expected to clear all outstanding dues by July 20. However, due to multiple delays, Biswas has now extended the deadline to November. This means that portions of salaries withheld from June and July will be disbursed to employees in November.

The Vacant Office Space

The decision to vacate its headquarters located on Wind Tunnel Road in Bengaluru reflects Dunzo’s efforts to optimize its cash flow and reduce operational costs. The office space has seen a significant reduction in occupancy due to remote work arrangements, making it a logical choice for cost-saving.

While no immediate update has been provided regarding new office space, it is likely that Dunzo will encourage employees to work from home (WFH) as the company continues to explore solutions to bolster its financial situation. The flexibility of WFH aligns with Dunzo’s cost-saving strategy.

Cost-Cutting Measures

Dunzo has previously implemented several cost-cutting measures, including multiple rounds of employee layoffs. These steps have been undertaken to mitigate the financial pressures facing the company.

Dunzo’s cash flow situation has continued to deteriorate as funding discussions progress slowly. To address its working capital needs, the company has sought partnerships with external entities. Recently, Dunzo collaborated with OneTap, an RBI-registered NBFC, to ensure timely payment of August salaries to its current employees.

Challenges

Even if Dunzo begins clearing its outstanding dues promptly, it still faces other financial obligations and must secure additional funding to meet working capital requirements. The company is also contending with legal notices from over seven firms and vendors, totaling over Rs 11 crore.

Dunzo has raised nearly $500 million since its inception in 2015, with support from notable investors such as Reliance Retail, Google, Lightrock, Lightbox, Blume Ventures, among others. Reliance holds the largest stake in the company at 25.8 percent, followed by Google at approximately 19 percent ownership.

Wrap Up

Thus, Dunzo’s decision to relinquish its office space in Bengaluru underscores the company’s commitment to addressing its financial challenges through prudent cost-cutting measures. As it navigates these difficulties, Dunzo continues to explore avenues for securing working capital and stabilizing its cash flow to ensure the sustainability of its operations.

Mumbai’s Iconic Double-Decker Buses

Mumbai’s iconic double-decker buses, a cherished part of the city’s public transport and a Bollywood staple for over eight decades have made their final journey on September 15. These memorable red double-decker buses have been a symbol of Mumbai’s urban landscape and have been featured in numerous films, etching themselves into the city’s cultural history.

The End of an Era

The decision to retire these beloved vehicles is due to the completion of their 15-year codal life. According to an official statement from the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST), the open-deck buses, similar to those in London and known for sightseeing tours, will continue to operate until October 5. In contrast, the red double-decker buses made their final run on September 15.

The first double-decker bus graced Mumbai’s streets on December 8, 1937, initially covering routes in South Bombay. In the 1960s, a double-decker trailer bus was introduced, expanding their reach. By the early 1990s, BEST boasted nearly 900 double-decker buses in its fleet. Presently, the fleet consists of only seven double-decker buses, including three open-deck buses.

A Farewell to the Red Double Deckers

Old-timers and Mumbai residents alike hold a deep nostalgia for the red double-decker buses, which have been immortalized on the silver screen, transporting movie characters and stars through the city’s bustling streets. The buses have become synonymous with Mumbai’s charm and charisma, leaving an indelible mark on the city’s cultural memory.

The Transition to Electric

While the classic red double-deckers bid farewell, BEST has initiated the transition to modern electric double-decker buses, featuring a sleek and contemporary design. These battery-run buses have been gradually introduced since February, with 25 of them currently in operation.

Commuter groups and bus enthusiasts have appealed to BEST to preserve at least two of the retiring double-decker buses at its Anik depot-based museum. Additionally, they have reached out to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the state’s tourism minister, urging them to consider this request. These efforts underscore the sentimental value these iconic buses hold in the hearts of Mumbaikars.

Wrap Up

Thus, the retirement of Mumbai’s red double-decker buses marks the end of an era in the city’s public transport system. As these beloved buses ride into the sunset, they leave behind a legacy of nostalgia, cherished memories, and a unique connection to Mumbai’s cinematic history.

Indian Railways | Vande Bharat

Indian Railway is rolling up its sleeves for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train and Vande Metro for long-distance and short-distance travel respectively. It is meant to enhance the rail network along with more transportation options for people.  BG Mallya, General Manager of the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), shared details of these upcoming trains.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains & Vande Metro

The Vande Bharat sleeper trains are a notable expansion of the Indian Railways’ fleet. Designed for long-distance travel, these high-speed sleeper trains will enable passengers to cover significant distances comfortably overnight. Production of the first Vande Bharat sleeper train has commenced and is scheduled for rollout in March 2024, marking a significant development in rail travel.

In addition to the sleeper trains, the ICF is also working on the Vande Metro, a 12-coach train designed for short-distance travel. This efficient mode of transportation is expected to be introduced by January 2024. The Vande Metro will cater to passengers seeking swift and convenient urban transit options.

Non-AC Push-Pull Train

Another exciting addition to the rail network is the non-AC push-pull train, consisting of 22 coaches and a locomotive. This train is designed to accommodate non-air-conditioned passengers and is scheduled for launch before October 31. Its introduction signifies Indian Railways’ commitment to providing a diverse range of travel choices to cater to passengers’ preferences.

The journey of the Vande Bharat Express began on February 15, 2019, when the Prime Minister inaugurated the first route between New Delhi and Varanasi. These trains are proudly manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.

More about the Train

The initiative to create indigenous semi-high-speed train sets commenced in mid-2017, and within just 18 months, the ICF Chennai successfully completed Train-18. To emphasize its Indian origin, the train was renamed Vande Bharat Express in January 2019. Notably, the Vande Bharat Express achieved a remarkable top speed of 180 kmph during trials on the Kota-Sawai Madhopur section.

Thus, the Indian Railways’ introduction of the Vande Bharat sleeper trains and Vande Metro showcases its commitment to enhancing rail travel across the country. For long-distance and short-distance journeys, these are great additions for the passengers. We hope the Vande Bharat continues its legacy to shape the future and provide speed, innovation, and convenience to the users.

Day 4 of Ongoing Kashmir Encounter

The ongoing encounter in Jammu and Kashmir has entered Day 4. The prolonged encounter has included all security forces in the challenge against the terrorists. They are holed up in a hilltop cave owing to the difficult terrain providing limited access. On the other hand, there are encounters going on in the Baramulla district as well.

The Anantnag Encounter

The encounter in Anantnag began during a joint operation by the Army and the police to locate and eliminate terrorists hiding in the dense Gadul forest of Kokernag. Tragically, the operation resulted in a soldier going missing, and three officers losing their lives while attempting to approach the terrorists’ hideout atop a hill.

Challenging Terrain and Standoff

The terrorists are well-acquainted with the local terrain and have strategically positioned themselves in a cave on the hilltop. Access to this cave is only possible via a narrow route with a deep ditch on one side. This route, initially used by the officers to approach the cave, exposed them to enemy fire with nowhere to seek cover.

Currently, the standoff continues, with security forces having the hill surrounded. They have employed rocket launchers and drones acquired from Israel to drop explosives. However, the rugged landscape has prevented the Army from establishing dominance over the area.

The terrorists, believed to be well-trained, have access to ample food and ammunition. It is suggested that their numbers could exceed the two to three initially reported.

Tribute to the Fallen Heroes

During the operation, three officers displayed immense bravery but tragically lost their lives. Colonel Manpreet Singh, Sena Medal (Gallantry), served as the Commanding Officer of the 19 Rashtriya Rifles Unit (19 RR). Major Aashish Dhonchak, Sena Medal (Gallantry), held the position of company commander within 19 RR. Himanyun Muzamil Bhat served as a Deputy Superintendent (DySP) in the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Colonel Singh’s body was brought to his hometown in Punjab, where a large gathering assembled to pay their final respects to this heroic figure.

Thus, the ongoing encounter in Kashmir has entered a critical phase as security forces strive to neutralize terrorists entrenched in a hilltop cave within challenging terrain. Despite the loss of brave officers, the operation continues, emphasizing the determination to safeguard the region’s security. The situation underscores the persistent threat posed by terrorism in the region and the sacrifices made by the security forces to counter it.

Canada Postpones Trade Mission to India

A trade mission between India and Canada was planned in October. However, Canada has decided to postpone it maybe because of the tense diplomatic relations. This might be during the encounter of PM Modi with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau at the G20 Summit in New Delhi.

G20 Summit Meeting | Sikh Population

During the G20 summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held formal bilateral meetings with several world leaders but offered only a brief, informal meeting to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This perceived snub signaled strained relations between the two nations.

For a lot of Sikhs outside their state of Punjab in India, Canada is their home to a large population. Also, several protests have irked India. After the leaders met, the Indian government said:

“They are promoting secessionism and inciting violence against Indian diplomats, damaging diplomatic premises and threatening the Indian community in Canada and their places of worship.”

Indian Government

Trade Talks on Pause

In response to the deteriorating diplomatic relations, both India and Canada have paused trade talks. Earlier in the month, Canada announced the need to “take stock” by temporarily halting trade negotiations with India. India, in a reciprocal move, has also suspended trade talks.

Canadian Trade Minister Mary Ng has decided to postpone the upcoming trade mission to India, scheduled for October. However, no specific reasons were provided for the postponement. This decision reflects the challenging diplomatic climate between the two nations.

Conclusion

Thus, the postponement of the trade decision shows the growing tensions in the relations between India and Canada. It is coupled with both activities during the G20 Summit and Sikh community as mentioned above. Both of these countries need to find common ground in order to stabilize their relations. As of now, all we can do is watch the diplomatic relations between India and China.

The AirFiber is supposed to deliver speeds of 1.5Gbps, allowing all users to stream high-quality videos, video conferences, online gaming, and much more without any lag. Mukesh Ambani announced that Jio AirFiber would be available on Ganesh Chaturthi during the AGM meeting of Reliance Industries.

About Jio AirFiber

The upcoming Jio AirFiber includes features like Wi-Fi 6 support, parental controls, security firewall. The device is compact and easy to set up as well. In order to set up your new Jio AirFiber device, Jio says one needs to do only this:

-says Jio

Alternative Options

There is a similar offering from Airtel as well. It is called Airtel Xstream AirFiber. All these AirFibers are based on connecting to existing towers just like the phone. We hope it will help you make a better purchase decision. This plug-and-play solution is going to be very useful for some users who require that use case. But it is not for all, so decide it well. As of now, the pricing has not been released yet. However, the price is expected to be around Rs. 6000.

UP Bar Council Ends Strike Following Government’s Agreement to Suspend FIRs Against Lawyers

In a significant development, the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh has decided to conclude the ongoing strike by lawyers protesting the recent police lathi-charge on lawyers in the Hapur district. The strike’s resolution came after the State government agreed to meet several demands put forth by the bar body. Here’s a breakdown of the key events and outcomes:

Genesis of the Issue

The issue began with a protest organized by lawyers in response to a police case filed against advocate Priyanka Tyagi. The protest led to an alleged lathi-charge by the police against advocates in Hapur.

The protesting lawyers had several demands, including the quashing of FIRs against them, the suspension or transfer of police officials involved in the lathi-charge, compensation for injured advocates, and the implementation of the Advocates Protection Act in the State.

Government’s Response

The Uttar Pradesh government responded positively to the demands made by the lawyers. They agreed to quash the FIRs against the protesting lawyers and committed to suspending or transferring the police officials responsible for the lathi charge. Additionally, the government assured compensation for the injured advocates and the implementation of the Advocates Protection Act.

Conclusion of Strike

Upon receiving confirmation of the government’s acceptance of their demands, lawyers across the State received messages directing them to resume work from September 16. The Allahabad High Court played an important role with regard to addressing the issue. High Court formed a committee headed by sitting judge Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta to examine the situation.

The strike, which had disrupted judicial work in the State, was ultimately called off as the government acceded to the lawyers’ demands. While the committee led by Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta was set to convene on September 16, the strike concluded before the scheduled meeting.

This development signifies a resolution to a contentious issue that had impacted the legal community in Uttar Pradesh. The willingness of the government to address the concerns of the lawyers and their subsequent return to work marks a positive step towards maintaining the rule of law and ensuring justice for all parties involved.
