S. Jaishankar Stands by Sikh Community Amid Canada’s Extremism Concerns

S. Jaishankar has voiced his support for the Sikh community and addressed concerns related to extremism in Canada. He emphasized that the extremist elements represent only a small minority within the Sikh community and do not reflect the views of the entire population.

During a press conference in Washington DC, Jaishankar responded to questions about the concerns of the Sikh community. He made it clear that the ongoing discussions and issues related to extremism and violence should not be seen as representative of the entire Sikh community.

“I do not believe that the discussions that are taking place right now are the representative issues of the entire community (Sikhs). Those who talk about terrorism, the separatist people, whose arguments include violence…this is a small minority, and the respective governments should take unbiased actions. We should not take this as a matter of the entire community.”

Issues with Canada’s Approach

Jaishankar also highlighted the strained relationship between India and Canada. It is due to the Canadian government’s permissive stance on terrorism, extremism, and violence. He noted that this permissiveness has been evident in Canada’s failure to respond to important extradition requests. These requests are related to individuals and organizations involved in violence and illegal activities in India.

The External Affairs Minister stated: “The fact is that we have had an ongoing problem with Canada and the Canadian government for some years now. And the ongoing problem really revolves around the permissiveness in regard to terrorism, extremism, and violence.”

Canada’s Unsubstantiated Claims

In recent developments, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged Indian government involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India promptly refuted these claims, labeling them as absurd and motivated. Canada has not provided any public evidence to support these allegations.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is considering extending the deadline for the return of ₹2000 notes beyond September 30, according to a senior official familiar with the matter. This potential extension comes as the RBI takes into account the need to accommodate non-resident Indians (NRIs) and individuals residing overseas.

On May 19, the RBI withdrew ₹2000 notes from circulation and provided a four-month window for the public to either deposit or exchange these notes. The original deadline set by the RBI for the exchange or deposit of ₹2000 notes was September 30.

The Possible Extension

As per the senior official’s statement, the RBI is contemplating extending the deadline by at least one month. This move aims to facilitate the exchange and deposit of ₹2000 notes by NRIs and individuals residing abroad. The RBI is considering this extension to ensure that individuals who are not currently in India have ample time to comply with the deadline.

The RBI had previously disclosed that approximately 93 percent of the ₹2000 banknotes in circulation on May 19 had already been returned to banks by September 2. Data collected from major banks indicated that out of the total ₹2000 denomination banknotes received back, approximately 87 percent were in the form of deposits, with the remaining 13 percent having been exchanged for banknotes of other denominations.

Remaining Currency in Circulation

A Bloomberg report highlighted that despite the significant return of ₹2000 notes, there is still an estimated 240 billion rupees or $2.9 billion worth of these notes in circulation. Although the majority of the 3.56 trillion rupees initially in circulation have been deposited in banks, approximately 7 percent of the notes remained in circulation as of September 1.

The vibrant and culturally significant festival of Ganesh Chaturthi in Mumbai reached its culmination with the immersion of thousands of Ganesh idols, marking the end of the ten-day celebration. However, amid the festivities, a tragic incident occurred during the idol immersion at Juhu Beach.

A Heartbreaking Incident

As the beats of drums and chants of ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya’ filled the air, various Ganesh mandals in Mumbai commenced processions for the idol immersions. By 6 pm, a staggering total of 7,950 idols had been immersed. This count included 7,513 household idols, 329 public idols, and 108 idols of the goddess Gauri, as reported by a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official.

However, amidst these celebrations, a heartbreaking incident unfolded at Juhu Beach. A 16-year-old boy named Hasan Yusuf Shaikh was found in distress in the sea during the immersion process. Swiftly, lifeguards came to his rescue, pulling him out of the water. Despite their efforts, the young boy could not be revived, and doctors at nearby Cooper Hospital declared him deceased upon arrival.

Safety Measures and Immersion Statistics

Thankfully, aside from this tragic incident, there were no reports of any other untoward events during the idol immersions across Mumbai. The BMC official reported that, in total, 2,199 of the 7,950 idols were immersed in artificial ponds set up by the civic body. These artificial ponds served as a safe and controlled environment for the immersion process.

The 2,199 idols immersed in these ponds included 2,096 household idols, 63 public idols, and 40 goddess Gauri idols.

A Grand Farewell to Lord Ganesh

The Ganesh Chaturthi festival, which commenced on September 19, culminated on ‘Anant Chaturdashi’ with the immersion of idols in the Arabian Sea and other water bodies in Mumbai. The event was marked by immense enthusiasm, as idols of Lord Ganesh in various forms and sizes were carried out of pandals for their final journey. These processions were accompanied by music, dance, and fervent prayers.

In the renowned Lalbaug area, famous for its grand Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, the procession of idols from Tejukaya and Ganesh Gully mandals commenced with traditional chants. The iconic Lalbaugcha Raja idol’s procession began at approximately 11:30 am, drawing thousands of devotees who eagerly awaited the final ‘darshan.’

A scientist from Hong Kong University’s Laboratory for Space Research, Quentin Parker, has refuted Ouyang’s unfounded assertions. Parker emphasized that successfully landing a rover near the South Pole, within the broadly defined South Pole region, represents a remarkable accomplishment. He asserted that India’s achievement should not be undermined or questioned based on the size of the defined polar region.

“The moment you land a rover close to the south pole and certainly within what’s defined as the south pole region is already a major achievement,” Quentin Parker, director of Hong Kong University’s Laboratory for Space Research, told the South China Morning Post.
“I think that nothing should be taken away from India because of that.”

A serious railway mishap occurred at Mathura railway station in Uttar Pradesh, where an Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train unexpectedly climbed onto platform number two. This incident led to the suspension of five railway staffers. While no casualties were reported, the investigation into the mishap has revealed startling details.

The incident, captured in a viral video on social media, shows a railway staffer, Sachin, engrossed in his mobile phone. In the video, Sachin enters the main coach and carelessly places his bag down. Within moments, the train starts moving towards the platform. Preliminary reports suggest that Sachin’s negligence, combined with mild intoxication, may have played a role in the mishap.

The Investigation

According to sources, the initial findings are based on the Crew Voice & Video Recording System (CVVRS). After the train arrived at the platform, Sachin entered the engine cabin while still engrossed in his phone. He placed his bag on the engine’s throttle, oblivious to the consequences. The pressure from the bag caused the throttle to move forward, propelling the EMU train towards the platform. The impact led to the train partially climbing onto platform number 2, damaging the overhead wires.

Further complicating the situation, a breath analyzer test conducted on Sachin showed a reading of 47 mg/100 ml, indicating mild alcohol consumption. Sachin has been sent for a medical test to determine his exact blood alcohol level.

Suspensions and Additional Details

Divisional Railway Manager Tej Prakash Agrawal suspended five individuals in connection with the incident. Besides Sachin, those suspended include Harbhajan Singh, Brajesh Kumar, Kuljeet (technical staff), and Govid Hari Sharma (loco pilot).

The report highlights an unusual practice: rather than technicians receiving the engine key, Sachin was tasked with this responsibility. After the train arrived at Mathura station, the loco pilot exited the cabin, and Sachin entered to retrieve the keys. Within moments, the train started moving, leading to the mishap. Sachin’s statement claims that he asked the loco pilot for the key, and upon entering the cabin, the train began moving unexpectedly. He attempted to apply the emergency brake, but the train had already entered the platform.

Karnataka Bandh: Two days after Bengaluru witnessed a partial shutdown due to the Cauvery River water dispute with Tamil Nadu, Karnataka experiences a state-wide bandh. The ‘Kannada Okkuta,’ an organization representing pro-Kannada groups, called for a 12-hour bandh from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Pro-Kannada groups and farmers’ organizations initiated a state-wide bandh in Karnataka to protest the release of Cauvery River water to Tamil Nadu. To manage the situation and prevent law and order issues, the Karnataka Police deployed additional forces across the state.

Massive Protest Procession in Bengaluru

Protesters planned a significant procession from Town Hall to Freedom Park in Bengaluru. Vatal Nagaraj’s ‘Kanadda Chaluvali’ group, which called for the bandh, also threatened to block national highways and airports, emphasizing their determination to protest.

In anticipation of the state-wide shutdown, Mandya district in Karnataka has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to maintain law and order.

Schools and Colleges Closed

In response to the bandh, educational institutions in Bengaluru city declared a holiday for students’ safety. This decision was made to ensure the well-being of students amid the bandh activities.
