Subrata Roy, Founder of Sahara India Pariwar Conglomerate, Passes Away at 75

Mumbai, Nov 15: Subrata Roy, founder and chairman of the Sahara India Pariwar conglomerate, passed away late Tuesday night in Mumbai. He was 75.

According to the company statement, he passed away at 10.30 pm due to cardiorespiratory arrest following an extended battle with complications arising from metastatic malignancy, hypertension, and diabetes.

Born in 1948 in Araria, Bihar, Roy started his career as a clerk before taking over the struggling Sahara Finance chit fund company in 1978. He transformed it into the mammoth Sahara India Pariwar conglomerate over the next few decades.

Under Roy’s stewardship, Sahara expanded into an empire encompassing diverse sectors including finance, real estate, media, manufacturing, and hospitality. The group’s assets included flagship newspaper Rashtriya Sahara, TV channel Sahara One, and iconic overseas hotels such as London’s Grosvenor House.

At its peak, Sahara India Pariwar was considered the second largest employer in India after the railways, with over 1 million staff. It claimed to have over 9 crore investors, reflecting Roy’s success in tapping the country’s small savings market.

However, Roy faced legal troubles in his later years over regulatory disputes regarding Sahara’s financial dealings. In 2014, the Supreme Court jailed him for failing to appear in a case involving dues payable to investors as demanded by market regulator SEBI.

Roy spent time in Tihar Jail before being granted parole. The case over alleged non-repayment to investors dented his image.

Still, Roy won praise as a visionary entrepreneur who built one of India’s largest business empires from humble beginnings. He received several honors including an honorary doctorate from the University of East London.

Of late, Roy has focused on new ventures such as electric vehicle company Sahara Evols and Edunguru online education targeting rural youth. His death leaves behind a legacy as one of independent India’s iconic self-made business tycoons.

Instagram Threads Adds Profile Deletion Without Removing Main Account

Popular intimate messaging app Instagram Threads has introduced new features providing users more control over their accounts based on feedback.

As announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, Threads now allows deleting profiles separately without affecting the connected Instagram account.

View on Threads

Previously, removing a Threads account would automatically delete the associated Instagram profile too. But users can now choose to only wipe their presence on Threads while keeping their main Instagram intact.

How To Delete Threads Profile:

  • Go to Threads settings and tap on Account
  • Select the ‘Delete or Deactivate Profile’ option
  • Uncheck the box to avoid deleting your Instagram account

This change gives flexibility to manage one’s Threads presence without permanent removal.

Opting Out of Auto Sharing

Additionally, users can now turn off the automatic sharing of Threads posts to Instagram, Facebook, etc.

Before, Threads content was directly shared to a user’s Instagram Story and Facebook Story without explicit consent. However, due to privacy concerns, this cross-posting is now optional.

In Threads settings, users can disable automated publishing of their posts across different apps. This allows greater control over where intimate Threads updates are broadcasted.

Expanded Reach Within Instagram

While bolstering privacy, Threads also introduced a feature to directly share posts on Instagram feed and Facebook. This helps users increase their audience within the Instagram ecosystem.

Acknowledging the demand for more exposure, Mosseri said they are rolling out an opt-out for featuring Threads content externally.

Future Roadmap

Instagram is reportedly developing a Threads API to help third-party developers build innovative Threads experiences.

The updates reflect Instagram’s balancing act between privacy and reach for the intimate messaging app.

Launched in 2019, Threads now has over 100 million monthly active users as revealed by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The changes empower users to tailor their distinct Threads presence.

Aadar Jain Makes Relationship With Alekha Advani Instagram Official Post Breakup With Tara Sutaria

Mumbai: Actor Aadar Jain has made his relationship with Alekha Advani’s Instagram official, nearly a year after splitting from his former girlfriend, actress Tara Sutaria.

On Monday, Aadar shared a photo with Alekha on Instagram where they are seen holding hands, tagging her in the post. “Light of my life,” he captioned it, adding a red heart emoji.

This comes barely a week after Aadar and Alekha made their first public appearance together at a Diwali party hosted by Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan.

Meanwhile, an old photo has surfaced on social media where Alekha is seen referring to herself as the “third wheel” between Aadar and Tara when they were dating.

In the throwback selfie shared by Alekha on her Instagram stories, she is clicking the picture while positioned between Aadar and Tara, who were then a couple. “Always the third wheel,” her caption humorously read.

Aadar and Tara, after years of dating, officially confirmed their breakup earlier this year. Tara mentioned being single currently in a recent interview while talking about linkup rumors.

On the work front, Aadar made his Bollywood debut with ‘Qaidi Band’ in 2017. Alekha Advani is the founder of a Mumbai-based wellness community.

Gaza Hospital Struggle To Keep Premature Babies Alive Amid Crisis

Gaza City: Doctors at Gaza’s largest hospital Al-Shifa are making desperate efforts to keep premature babies alive as the facility runs out of power, water, and other critical resources due to the ongoing conflict.

With the neonatal unit not functioning, the premature infants have been moved out of incubators into other wards and are being wrapped in foil and kept near hot water bottles to maintain body warmth.

Director Dr Muhammad Abu Salmiya said: “I was with them a while ago. They are now exposed because we have taken them out of the incubators. We wrap them in foil and put hot water next to them so we can warm them.

The head of pediatrics Dr. Mohamed Tabasha said the number of babies in his care has dropped from 39 to 36 in a day, highlighting the grim mortality situation.

Doctors say without incubators and stable conditions, the newborns’ survival remains under severe threat. Generators, water supply, and oxygen cylinders are also fast depleting.

The Gaza health ministry said six premature babies and nine patients have died since electrical shortages began last week. The World Health Organisation said al-Shifa was no longer functioning as a hospital. There is constant gunfire and bombing in the area, it added.

Doctors have defied the Israeli Defense Force’s orders to evacuate, fearing the lives of hundreds of critical patients could be endangered if shifted amid heavy shelling.

The acute deprivation of resources due to the blockade and the latest conflict has pushed Gaza’s health system into a state of deep crisis, making the survival of vulnerable newborns extremely precarious.

WhatsApp Introduces New Voice Chat Feature for Seamless Group Calling Experience

WhatsApp introduces new feature

Popular messaging platform WhatsApp has rolled out a new voice chat feature for improved group calling. This update allows group members to have free-flowing conversations without the disruptiveness of traditional group calls that ring all users.

The feature is currently available to users who have updated their WhatsApp applications to the latest versions on both Android and iOS through the Google Play Store and the App Store, respectively. Once activated for a group, members will notice an option to initiate a voice chat, replacing the traditional group call button.

How It Works:

Once enabled for a group, members will see a ‘Start Voice Chat’ option instead of the standard group call button when they open the group. Tapping this will initiate a voice chat.

Importantly, unlike a regular group call, not all members are alerted when a voice chat begins. Only those who are actively part of the voice chat will be notified. Other members can continue texting normally without interruption.

Participants can join and leave the voice chat multiple times as per their convenience. The chat window shows profiles of members currently speaking on the call. Users can simultaneously text other group members not on the voice chat.

This allows members the flexibility to multitask within WhatsApp while the conversation is happening. The voice chat concludes when no participant has been active for an hour or when all users exit the chat.

Rollout Details

As per WhatsApp’s announcement, voice chats are being rolled out first to groups larger than 32 members. The company’s FAQ page mentions that currently, groups between 33 to 128 participants can use the feature.

Voice chats are restricted to a user’s primary device as linked devices do not support the functionality yet.

Intent Behind Feature

Voice chats make group calling seamless by reducing disruptiveness and enabling users to multitask. This brings WhatsApp on par with professional platforms like Slack and Discord which already offer similar capabilities.

The feature provides more flexibility and control to users during group calls compared to WhatsApp’s existing video and voice calling options.

As group sizes on WhatsApp can be large, voice chats allow smooth conversations between interested members without forcing participation on others. This makes large group calling much easier and user-friendly.

The voice chat update shows WhatsApp’s focus on enhancing engagement and utility for group interactions on its platform amid rising competition.

Tiger3 Box office collection

Mumbai: Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif-starrer ‘Tiger 3’ got off to a roaring start at the box office, minting Rs 44.5 crore on day 1, as per early estimates.

The high-octane spy thriller released during Diwali, considered a comparatively dull period but still posted the biggest-ever opening for a Bollywood film on the festival day.

With its day 1 collection, ‘Tiger 3’ surpassed Salman’s previous top Diwali opener, ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’, and recorded his highest festive day 1 figure so far.

The Yash Raj Films project, made on a budget of Rs 300 crore, gained positive word-of-mouth and critic reviews, which translated into bumper box office earnings.

The film’s opening day numbers have exceeded trade analyst expectations of around Rs 35-40 crore. However, it falls short of the massive day 1 collection of Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Pathaan’ (Rs 57 crore) and ‘Jawan’ (Rs 75 crore).

One of ‘Tiger 3’s highlights is Salman and SRK’s camaraderie during the climax sequence. Their bromance on screen led to thunderous cheers and applause in theatres.

With its successful start, ‘Tiger 3’ will look to notch up big numbers over the extended Diwali weekend. The film will face no major Bollywood clash and has a free run.

If ‘Tiger 3’ continues its momentum, it can potentially emerge as one of the highest-grossing films in the action entertainer category this year.

Delhi’s Air Quality Turns ‘Poor’ Post Diwali As Crackers Defy Ban

Delhi Air Pollution

New Delhi: Delhi’s air quality dipped to ‘poor’ levels a day after Diwali celebrations, as residents burst firecrackers in violation of the complete ban imposed by the AAP government.

The morning after Diwali, a thick blanket of smoke lingered over Delhi, indicating rampant flouting of the cracker ban. Burnt remains of fireworks littered streets in areas like Lodhi Road, RK Puram, Punjabi Bagh, etc.

Despite the Arvind Kejriwal-led government’s awareness campaigns and strict directives, the night sky was lit up with firecrackers across the city. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai had appealed to citizens to celebrate a ‘green’ Diwali with diyas over crackers.

According to IQAir, Delhi ranked as the most polluted city globally on Monday with an AQI of 434. At some locations like Anand Vihar, the AQI exceeded 900, as per reports.

The Central Pollution Control Board’s data showed Delhi’s air quality falling into the ‘poor’ category after the Diwali celebrations, undoing recent gains made through steps like thermal plant closures.

While the ban on firecrackers, if followed, was expected to aid air quality this year, violations have again spotlighted issues in monitoring and enforcement. The spike in pollution levels post-Diwali follows the familiar script of previous years.

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai had said all eyes would be on Delhi’s air after Diwali. True to his word, the capital awoke to yet another smoggy morning, proving firecracker bans ineffective against public defiance.

Housing Crisis Insights by Nikhil Kamath

Zerodha’s co-founder, Nikhil Kamath, recently delved into the ongoing housing crisis, shedding light on the impact of rising EMIs, stagnant salaries, and soaring house prices. Through a series of posts on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Kamath offered valuable insights into the current state of the real estate market.

In a post dated November 2, Nikhil Kamath pointed out that interest rates are on the rise, resulting in significantly higher EMIs, while salaries have remained relatively stagnant.

Meanwhile, house prices have seen substantial increases, creating a challenging scenario for potential homebuyers. Kamath pondered the inevitable question of “What’s next?” and suggested that if interest rates remain high, a slowdown in property sales could be a precursor to a necessary price correction. He emphasized the global correlation of the cost of capital, asserting that Indian interest rates can’t decrease if US rates remain elevated.

Global and Indian Housing Market Perspectives

Kamath’s commentary extended beyond the Indian real estate market, touching on the global housing crisis. His observations are based on the context of the US. Getting a homeownership is unattainable for lots of young individuals because of the soaring high prices. It is further exacerbated by increasing rates for mortgages. Some reports from the Wall Street Journal state that it is 52% more expensive to buy a home than to rent one in the US.

In an earlier post from April, Kamath referred to the spike in house rents in India as a short-term phenomenon. He stressed that for a balance between buying and renting trends to be achieved, housing loan rates needed to align with rental rates.

Factors Affecting the Indian Housing Market

Nikhil Kamath shared his perspective on the Indian housing market, highlighting the impact of rising interest rates and an aging population with fertility rates below replenishment levels in most states. This demographic shift leads to an older population that requires less living space.

Furthermore, the residential rental yield is approximately 3 percent, which falls far short of beating inflation. Kamath also discussed the potential impact of resolving black money issues on the Indian real estate market and questioned why real estate prices in cities like Mumbai remained high, especially when renting at 3 percent seemed more financially favorable.

Expert Insights and Market Data

Market data and expert insights further reinforced the challenges and dynamics of the real estate sector. Anarock’s report indicated a surge in housing sales across seven Indian cities in the January to September period, with transactions surpassing the entire pre-COVID year of 2019. Additionally, Magicbricks reported a decline in rental housing demand during Q3 2022, despite year-over-year growth.

Thus, Nikhil Kamath’s insights shed light on the complexities of the housing crisis, both in India and on a global scale, emphasizing the interplay between interest rates, demographic shifts, and the financial implications of buying versus renting. These observations underscore the challenges faced by those seeking to enter the real estate market in these turbulent times.
