Wikipedia’s Jimmy Wales Dismisses ChatGPT As ‘Pretty Bad’, Says AI Far From Rivaling Humans

Wikipedia Founder Takes A Swipe At ChatGPT, Calls It 'Pretty Bad'

At the Web Summit In Lisbon, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales downplayed the capabilities of viral AI chatbot ChatGPT, terming it “pretty bad” due to frequent errors.

Despite AI dominating discussions at the tech event, Wales exhibited less enthusiasm about large language models like ChatGPT. He stated such AI is still three decades away from rivaling human abilities.

This comes amid the meteoric rise and growing debate around ChatGPT, launched by OpenAI last year. Tech giants like Microsoft and Google are betting big on conversational AI.

However, Wales feels Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI could become problematic for Google. He told the audience that for many serious purposes, ChatGPT falls short and makes a lot of mistakes.

Wales took a dig at Twitter, now rebranded as X, saying it is not a credible source for factual information. This references Elon Musk’s rocky takeover of the platform.

On Wikipedia’s potential AI integration, Wales clarified the technology won’t be used to write articles outright. Instead, it could help enhance existing articles by identifying gaps and suggesting new sources.

He noted AI tends to be more accurate on popular topics already well-documented by humans. But Wikipedia needs help on more obscure subjects where AI struggles.

“The problem with AI is that the stuff it is good at and gets correct includes content already widely written about on Wikipedia and by humans,” Wales explained.

A recent study showed ChatGPT follows clinical guidelines for depression better than doctors, sparking job loss fears. However, Wales’ comments indicate generative AI still faces limitations in matching human skills.

While AI collaboration could boost Wikipedia’s productivity, Wales remains cognizant of the technology’s current shortcomings.

Jimmy Kimmel Set To Host Oscars For Fourth Time in 2024

Comedian and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel has been announced as the host for the 96th Academy Awards slated for March 2024, marking his fourth time helming the prestigious ceremony.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed Kimmel’s return to the Oscars stage, two decades after his hosting debut in 2017.

Reacting to the announcement, Kimmel jokingly stated he had “always dreamed of hosting the Oscars four times!” The show will air live on ABC from Los Angeles.

Kimmel last hosted back-to-back in 2017 and 2018. The ceremony went hostless from 2019 to 2021 due to the pandemic. Oscars 2022 had three hosts – Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes.

The 2021 edition without a host saw the lowest viewership ever at 10.4 million. Kimmel’s return indicates the Academy’s emphasis on having an anchor host to boost engagement.

Kimmel’s wife Molly McNearney will executive produce the 2024 Oscars, their second straight year in that role. Academy top brass expressed excitement over the Kimmels’ passion for cinema and promised an entertaining global showcase.

Having an experienced host like Kimmel provides stability for the Academy as it looks to recover ratings and restore the grandeur of Hollywood’s biggest night. His wit and spontaneity as a host are expected to deliver memorable moments for audiences.

Microsoft and Nvidia Join Forces to Unlock the Potential of Generative AI

At their annual Ignite conference, Microsoft announced an ambitious partnership with Nvidia to collaborate on groundbreaking projects in the field of generative artificial intelligence.

In his keynote address, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the monumental possibilities of generative AI, claiming it could surpass even personal computing, mobile devices, and the internet in scope and impact.

Generative AI involves creating novel, human-like content using machine learning – across text, images, audio, and video. Huang described it as potentially “the single most significant platform transition in computing history.”

With Nvidia earning $6 billion from its AI chips and models, the company is aggressively focused on spearheading innovation in this nascent technology. A new generative AI chip slated for 2024 will further boost Nvidia’s soaring AI revenues.

But the Microsoft-Nvidia partnership extends beyond hardware to building next-gen AI services. The companies are developing an AI foundry platform to enable businesses to build customized generative models tailored to their needs.

This could unlock the application of generative AI across healthcare, retail, education, entertainment, and more. The foundry intends to make the technology accessible to all.

Nvidia brings its proven success in developing performant AI chips and models while Microsoft contributes its vast cloud infrastructure and developer ecosystem.

Together, they now have an opportunity to shape the trajectory of generative AI and drive mainstream adoption. Given the technology’s nascence, Microsoft and Nvidia are positioned to set the pace for others to follow.

Their collaboration reflects the digital transformation potential of generative AI, which remains largely untapped. It could emerge as the next frontier of computing once barriers like computing costs and regulation are overcome.

Merry Christmas Release Postponed to January 2024 Amid Crowded Year-End Slate

Mumbai: The makers of the Vijay Sethupathi-Katrina Kaif starrer ‘Merry Christmas’ have announced a new release date for the film, shifting it from December 8, 2022, to January 12, 2024.

In a joint statement, the producers said the decision to push the release was taken due to the packed slate of movies over the last two months of 2022.

The Sriram Raghavan directorial was earlier set to hit theaters alongside films like ‘Avatar 2’, ‘Cirkus’ and ‘Ganapath’ on December 8.

However, the official statement conveyed the team’s commitment to deliver an exceptional cinematic experience. Hence, they have moved ‘Merry Christmas’ to January 12, 2024, to avoid a clash with other major titles.

The production banner Tips Films confirmed the new date on Instagram, promising to make the winter of 2024 more joyful for fans.

Earlier, Raghavan had revealed plans to release Hindi and Tamil versions of the thriller. While the core story remains the same, the Tamil film will have a partially different cast to avoid seeming dubbed.

The director had shared his excitement about making the bilingual in an interview with News18 earlier this year.

Headlined by Sethupathi and Kaif, ‘Merry Christmas marks Raghavan’s return to the thriller genre after acclaimed films like ‘Ek Hasina Thi’ and ‘Badlapur’.

The new release date gives the makers more breathing room amid the cavalcade of year-end Bollywood releases.

During the show with Kareena Kapoor, Alia asserted that her words were taken out of context. She was hurt that Ranbir faced criticism over her candid remark made jokingly in an old interview.

When Karan Johar asked about the ‘wipe off’ lipstick comment that sparked toxicity debate, Alia explained she has a blunt way of speaking and was simply imitating Ranbir in a lighthearted manner.

But she realized later that her words were misinterpreted, leading to articles portraying Ranbir as ‘toxic’ and problematic.

“There are so many real issues to highlight rather than focus on something I said harmlessly in a different context,” Alia remarked.

She added that although the uncalled-for backlash upset her initially, she chose not to react publicly.

Previously, Ranbir had also addressed the controversy saying that while he felt bad, the larger goal of eliminating toxicity in society was more important.

On Koffee with Karan, Alia emphasized that her off-the-cuff remark wasn’t intended to portray Ranbir as toxic. She decried the unnecessary negativity around what was an innocuous comment.
