New Krishna Bhavan to Close its Doors After Dishing Out Signature Items for Nearly 70 Years

Nestled in the heart of Malleswaram, the New Krishna Bhavan stirred quite the buzz on Tuesday, drawing in hordes of loyal patrons. Shockingly, the restaurant will permanently shut its doors on December 6.

The restaurant was established in 1954 by Ramakrishna Prabhu and then passed on to his son Sundar R. Prabhu. It is currently owned by his son Sunil. S Prabhu. Just like the previous ownership, which had traveled through generations, the workers at the restaurant also have been around for just as long.

Mr.Prabhu stated, “We have been in business for almost 70 years now, and we want to venture into different paths. We love this place, but honestly, we are a bit tired and exhausted. Our employees, who have served us for years, feel the same way. One of them is Ramamurthy, our 72-year-old cook who worked here for 40 years.”

The restaurant management has yet to make a decision on what they plan to do next, but they’re ready to keep all options up. Right now, they’re trying to find their current staff members new jobs at other restaurants.

Located on Sampige Road, the restaurant maintained its popularity among other iconic restaurants in the region, like Janatha Hotel and CTR. The owner said the success of the restaurant was due to the menu, which featured items that were common in every household, like idli with sambar, akki roti, neer dosa, and ragi mudde with salary. It has a loyal customer base that has always kept coming back for more, with even more people trying the delicacies offered by New Krishina Bhavan. Actor Rajkumar, his son Raghavendra Rajkumar, and a few other politicians also visited the restaurant frequently, according to management.

Mr. Prabhu thanked loyal customers and dedicated employees. He even said, “I spent my entire day here, going home only for dinner. I will miss those days once we shut shop. “

Israel-Hamas Truce in Gaza Extended by a Day Amid Hostage Swap Talks

The temporary ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza has been extended by one more day till Friday, buying critical time for hostage negotiations.

The truce, originally meant to end Thursday night after a week, was prolonged by both sides just 10 minutes before expiry as Egypt and Qatar mediated talks.

This followed the successful sixth round of hostage exchanges on Thursday under the framework deal. So far, Israel has released 58 prisoners while Hamas freed 41 Israelis, including 2 soldiers held for nearly 40 years.

In its statement, Israel Defense Forces said the extra 24 hours would facilitate further hostage releases by mediators. Hamas also confirmed the extension under existing humanitarian access terms.

The fragile truce has witnessed over a dozen breaches by both sides but managed to hold on. Secure pauses enable aid access into Israeli-blockaded Gaza after months of bombardment.

However, the tiny stretches focused on limited goals reflect the long road ahead for sustainable de-escalation and political solutions to deep conflicts.

For now, the immediate priority remains to free all civilians held by Hamas to rebuild confidence before winter freezes conflict lines. Every additional day without rockets or airstrikes comes as a relief.

With critics accusing hardliners in Israel’s ruling coalition of stonewalling concessions, the coming weeks hang on a delicate balance as talks inch forward.

Sensex Sinks Over 200 Points After Flat Start; Nifty Holds 20K

Indian equity benchmarks exhibited volatility on Thursday, sharply reversing early gains amid weak global signals. The BSE Sensex plunged over 200 points after a muted start to trade at 66,694. Meanwhile, the Nifty50 hovered around the psychological 20,000 level.

On the Sensex pack, HDFC Bank, Tata Steel, Asian Paints, NTPC, and IndusInd Bank bled the most. However, ITC, Axis Bank, Hindustan Unilever, Sun Pharma, and M&M bucked the trend with modest gains.

Broader indices saw the midcap index rise 0.1% while the smallcap gauge climbed 0.3% as investors cherry-picked mispriced stocks. Among sectors, banks, auto, FMCG, and pharma traded in the green while IT and metal dragged.

The initial uptick on the weekly F&O expiry day got pared as underlying sentiment remained cautious amid recession fears globally. Analysts expect the tug-of-war between bulls and bears to persist at higher levels due to mixed cues.

That said, the Nifty holding the psychologically important 20,000 mark despite volatility remains a positive sign for the bulls. Strong domestic flows through systematic investment plans are also lending support.

In the IPO corner, Tata Technologies continued its dream run with shares listing at a gigantic 140% premium over the issue price. This takes the tally of successful startup and technology listings to seven this year.

On Wednesday, the Sensex had vaulted over 350 points to end at a record closing high of 66,919. The Nifty too had settled above the 20,000 milestone for the first time since September 22. But the rally remains narrowly focused on select heavyweights as broader markets play catchup.

Cyclone Threat Looms As Depression Likely To Form Over Bay of Bengal

A cyclonic storm could be brewing over the Bay of Bengal by Friday, with a depression expected to develop from a well-marked low-pressure area over the region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the system currently lying over the South Andaman Sea is likely to intensify into a depression by Thursday.

Thereafter, it would continue northwestwards over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, gradually strengthening into Cyclone Michaung around December 2nd.

With the impending cyclogenesis, Odisha authorities have sounded alert in 7 coastal districts. The state disaster management agency has advised fishermen against venturing into seas from December 1st given the anticipated rough conditions.

IMD regional head HR Biswas said several south Odisha districts could experience light to moderate rains and thunderstorms on December 3rd once the cyclone nears land.

The projected path remains dynamic as forecast models update. But early warnings have allowed the administration to safeguard lives and livelihoods.

As year-end storms can be unpredictable, authorities are preparing for all contingencies from flooding to structural damages. Cyclone Jawad in 2021 too had emerged around this period, illustrating the Arabian Sea’s tendency for late-season storms.

The developing system marks the first cyclonic circulation in the aftermath of severe cyclonic storms Sitrang and Mandous in October and December respectively. As climate change accelerates, the Indian Ocean has witnessed increased instances of catastrophic weather events.

With the memory of Cyclone Fani’s trail of destruction still fresh, Odisha will hope fortunes favor them this time around. But nonetheless, these are testing times for disaster management agencies to stay vigilant around the clock.

According to Sri Lanka Cricket’s 2024 itinerary, India will visit the island nation following their home assignments against Zimbabwe, and Afghanistan, and a tour of Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka had a largely disappointing 2023 across formats, crashing out early from the ODI World Cup and Asia Cup besides losing the Test series to Pakistan at home.

Hence next year will be crucial for rebuilding, with the team scheduled to play a substantial 52 international matches before their World Cup title defense in 2024.

SLC CEO Ashley De Silva expressed confidence that the action-packed calendar will reinvigorate Sri Lankan cricket through competitive exposure. He singled out the high-profile Indian sojourn as a key highlight.

While the team struggled on recent tours of New Zealand and Australia, they managed to defeat Ireland in a Test series at home.

Fans would be hoping the familiar home conditions would help them fare better against India next year. This would serve as ideal preparation before the ICC global tournament where Sri Lanka is grouped with Australia and South Africa.

For India, the white-ball engagement will mark the first under new limited-overs captain Hardik Pandya post the World Cup. It presents an opportunity to test India’s next-gen talent like Shubman Gill in national colors.

With both teams starting afresh in the 2024-25 season, the six matches could spearhead Asian cricket’s resurgence. Securing the island’s cricketing health is imperative for regional balance.

Hamas Releases 13 More Hostages as Israel Frees 30 Palestinian Prisoners

Hamas Releases 13 More Hostages as Israel Frees 30 Palestinian Prisoners

Hamas has decided to release twelve more hostages in captivity in exchange for Palestinian prisoners under an extended truce, as meditators have been trying to work towards a lasting half to the seven-week Israel-Hamas war.

Among the hostages released from Gaza, two were Thais, and ten were Israelis, and the army said that they were handed over to the Red Cross and were inside Israel’s territory. Later, Israel’s Prison Services commented that 30 Palestinian detainees had been released under a truce deal with Gaza.

An AFP journalist witnessed masked and armed fighters, some from Islamic Jihad and some from Hamas, hand over the hostages to Red Cross officials in Rafah, which is next to the border with Egypt.

International figures from all across the world have hailed the pause in hostilities and release of the hostages as a hope to end the conflict, which was sparked by deadly Hamas attacks that forced Israeli military forces to go on an offensive attack in the Gaza Strip.

As the two-day extension to the truce showed up to be held Tuesday, Israeli and US intelligence chiefs were present in Doha, the capital of Qatar, to talk about the “next phase” of the deal.
Israel and Hamas have been under heavy international pressure not to return to all-out fighting when the truce ends on Tuesday between both sides. The truce paused the fight, which started on 7th November 2023, when Hamas militants went over to Israel’s border killed 1,200 people, were mostly civilians, and kidnapped at least 240.

However, Israel’s retaliatory air and ground operation in Gaza has wiped out almost 15,000 people, who are mostly civilians, according to the Hamas government. Israel views the truce as a temporary measure to complete hostage releases and plans to continue its offensive against Hamas.

41 Workers Trapped in Uttarakhand Tunnel Rescued After 17 Days

Rescue workers have finally managed to pull out all 41 workers who were trapped in Uttarakhand’s Silkyara tunnel in a rescue operation that was hanging on hope and despair for almost 17 days.
After the workers were rescued, Union Minister V K Singh and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami welcomed the workers as the National Disaster Response Force brought them out with the help of a steel chute that lined an almost 60-metre passage.

An ambulance with a few workers left the mouth of the tunnel around 8 pm, almost an hour after a group of rat-hole mining experts took out the last stretch of rubble. As the operation ended, there were hugging, and cheers, and some people outside the tunnel chanted “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Har Har Mahadev”. Ambulances took the workers to a nearby community health center where a special ward for the rescued workers had been set up.

Before they were taken to the community health center, they were given a quick medical checkup as they came out of the steel pipe. CM Dhami commented that there was no worker in critical condition. However, laborers will be under medical observation for some time before being sent to their homes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi appreciated the efforts of the workers on X. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said he saluted the trapped workers for facing such a difficult situation for such a long duration.

The only remaining challenge in the rescue operation was tackled by a group of rat-hole mining experts, which involved extracting small amounts of coal by going down narrow burrows. They were brought in to carry out manual digging after a huge Auger boring machine got stuck in the passage, which had been dug to about 47 meters.
