In ‘Animal’, Vanga’s Toxic Male Protagonist Seeks Vengeance Once Again

In 'Animal', Vanga's Toxic Male Protagonist Seeks Vengeance Once Again

New Delhi- Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga stays true to his promise of unbridled violence in ‘Animal’, though his toxic male protagonist treading the path of vengeance yet again may not sit well with many.

Much like Kabir Singh and Arjun Reddy, Ranbir Kapoor’s character Ranvijay’s entitlement crosses all moral boundaries as he sets out to shield his father, Balbir Singh, at any cost.

In his excessive drive to ‘protect’, Ranvijay turns into a reckless, gun-toting monster who fires at the slightest inconvenience, wearing his hypermasculinity like a badge of honor.

At its core, ‘Animal’ explores parental influence and upbringing shaping such unhinged behavior. As a child, Ranvijay only craves his father’s love and approval but faces indifference instead, turning his yearning into unrestrained rage.

So while the film tries to justify his grey shades through his backstory, the problem lies in still portraying abuse of power as an assertion of manhood. Such visual glorification of crime to satisfy the male ego is where Vanga faulters again.

For instance, a scene showing Ranbir Kapoor walking out naked as guns fire wildly to celebrate his homecoming seems needlessly excessive, even for an action film aiming to shock.

So while ‘Animal’ will undoubtedly find resonance among the director’s core fanbase, those criticizing the normalization of misogyny and violence against women in Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh will be left shaking their heads once more.

Electricity Crisis Looms Over India-Australia T20 In Raipur

An electricity crisis threatens to disrupt the fourth T20 match between India and Australia at Raipur’s Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium today, highlighting gross negligence by state authorities.

The international stadium has remained without power supply since 2018 owing to unpaid electricity bills accumulating to Rs 3.16 crore since 2009.

Despite hosting three international fixtures here over the last five years, the stalemate between the stadium’s overseers – the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Sports Department – has resulted in the crisis worsening.

As per officials, temporary electric connections have been set up in the galleries and corporate boxes as stopgap measures. But the playing area and floodlights will rely solely on generators for today’s match.

“I don’t know the exact bill amount. But the connection has been temporarily taken for spectators,” said a Chhattisgarh cricket official, expressing doubts about whether Raipur merits hosting international cricket given the persistent issue.

The electricity company has issued multiple warnings in the past asking the state departments to clear outstanding dues before restoring supply. But the lackadaisical attitude has led from disconnection to a complete blackout now.

Sports minister Umesh Patel has claimed arrangements are being made to pay dues worth Rs 1.8 crore. But with penalties rising daily, there seems to be no permanent resolution in sight.

The situation reflects poorly on the state government as international attention turns to Raipur today. Lack of electricity has previously affected a half-marathon event here too in 2018.

As Singh took to the glittering stage to accept the honor of actress Sharon Stone, he spontaneously acknowledged the presence of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean icon in the audience.

“Wow, one of my screen idols is in the house. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Johnny Depp,” exclaimed an awestruck Singh before the gathering of global cinema royalty.

He proceeded to praise Depp as his longtime inspiration and a “master of transformation” for his seemingly effortless ability to morph into intensely layered onscreen characters over the years, much like Singh himself.

From ‘Edward Scissorhands to ‘Sweeney Todd,’ Singh credited Depp’s filmography for teaching him the craft of acting and pushing his boundaries as a performer.

The heartfelt movie icon-to-icon interaction captivated the red carpet audience and underscored Singh’s meteoric rise as a global Indian superstar, evident in his Yusr Award win alongside Hollywood names like Stone.

The second edition of the high-profile Jeddah film festival saw several Indian and Arabic film personalities rub shoulders with Tinseltown bigwigs this past week in a grand celebration of international cinema.

WhatsApp Unveils 'Secret Code' To Hide Locked Chats

Expanding its privacy capabilities, WhatsApp has launched a new ‘Secret Code’ feature that allows users to conceal their locked chats behind a customizable digital password.

Announcing the feature’s rollout on Thursday, WhatsApp said the additional authentication method aims to boost privacy when others access a user’s phone.

The feature lets users set a unique personalized code, using numbers, letters, or emojis, to lock their secured chat folder. Entering this secret code in the search bar is the only way to reveal hidden chats.

Alternatively, users can choose to retain locked chats in their main chat list as well. But details of such chats will remain hidden from notifications if the phone is accessed by others.

WhatsApp has been consistently strengthening privacy over the years, introducing chat encryption in 2016 and encrypted backups last year. The chat-locking feature debuted in May 2022.

“We’ll keep building new ways to protect your messages and keep them as private and secure as face-to-face conversations,” WhatsApp affirmed in its announcement.

The Facebook-owned platform, used by over 2 billion globally, said the Secret Code functionality will be rolled out to all users in the coming months after its launch this week.

The move comes at a time when user security and data privacy have assumed prime significance for tech platforms like WhatsApp and Apple’s iMessage amid rising government scrutiny.

Sensex Rallies Over 300 Pts To Hit Record High; Nifty Tops 20,200

Indian shares opened sharply higher on Friday, with the BSE Sensex rallying over 300 points to hit fresh record highs and the NSE Nifty crossing the psychological 20,200 mark for the first time.

The early surge was powered by robust Q2 GDP data released yesterday, which showed the economy expanding 7.6% despite global headwinds. Auto, metal, and realty stocks saw robust buying while IT majors witnessed profit-taking.

By 9:33 am, the Sensex was trading 303 points higher at 67,299 levels with L&T, NTPC, Asian Paints, Powergrid, and Maruti leading the pack of gainers.

The 50-share Nifty also hit an all-time peak of 20,230 in initial deals, showing the positive sentiment around Indian equities after the strong growth figures.

Broader markets saw an even sharper uptick, with Nifty Midcap 50 and Nifty Midcap Select indices adding as much as 0.95% each in early trade.

“The GDP numbers display the resilience and strength of the Indian economy amid testing global times. This is a testimony to India’s growth story,” said Prime Minister Modi yesterday.

Market experts like Geojit Financial’s VK Vijaykumar noted the Q2 GDP data and exit polls predicting BJP’s good show in state elections were positive triggers that may sustain the market momentum going ahead.

Foreign investors have pumped in over Rs 8,100 crore this week on robust macros and INR has also appreciated about 10 paise against USD. Global cues however remain mixed amid recession fears in the West.

Government Hikes Commercial LPG Price, Cuts Jet Fuel Rates

In its monthly revision of fuel prices, the government on Friday increased the cost of 19-kg commercial LPG cylinders by Rs 21 while slashing jet fuel prices for the second consecutive month.

The ATF prices were slashed by 4.6 percent, effectively reducing the price from Rs 1,11,344.92 per kilolitre in New Delhi, to Rs 1,06,155.67 per kg.  ( Image Source: Getty )

The hike takes the price of the 19-kg commercial cylinder to Rs 1,775.50, from Rs 1,796.50 previously. However, the rates of 5-kg and 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinders remain unchanged at Rs 503 and Rs 903 respectively in Delhi.

This is the third upward revision in commercial LPG rates since October, further burdening restaurants, eateries, and other establishments. Rates were first cut by Rs 100 per cylinder in August and then by Rs 158 in September before the hike cycle began.

Simultaneously, Oil Marketing Companies reduced Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices by 4.6 percent, bringing them down from Rs 1,11,345 per kilolitre to Rs 1,06,156 in the national capital.

Commercial LPG and ATF do not fall under government regulation, so oil marketing firms Indian Oil, BPCL, and HPCL revise their rates on the 1st of every month based on global benchmarks.

The frequent revisions, highlighting the government’s loosening grip on fuel pricing, are being criticized by industry bodies for hampering their budgeting processes and hitting bottom lines.

Blanket Of White Covers Kashmir As Snow And Rain End Dry Spell

Kashmir awoke to a white wonderland on Thursday after heavy overnight snowfall covered higher reaches and plains saw light rains, ending a parching 3-week dry spell, officials said.

The snowfall brought delight to tourists in Gulmarg and Sonmarg, even as the meteorological department predicted more snowfall during the day. Heavy snowfall also suspended traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.

The wet weather came as a relief to Srinagar residents who had been reeling under cold, cough, and smog caused by the long dry spell. Children and the elderly were notably affected.

“The valley was desperately awaiting the rains to wash away the choking smog. Thankfully, it has snowed heavily in upper reaches and rained mildly in plains for now,” said Ridha Begum, a school teacher in Srinagar.

As per officials, while Gulmarg saw sub-zero temperatures after snowfall, overnight temperatures saw a marked rise across the valley. Srinagar recorded a minimum of 5.3 degrees Celsius on Wednesday night.

The haven of winter sports in Kashmir, Gulmarg was the coldest at minus 1 degree Celsius even after snowfall due to its higher altitude. Pahalgam saw 1.5 degrees at night.

Met officials said the wet spell is likely to continue on Thursday, after which Kashmir would again experience a dry week starting Friday.

The sudden rain and hailstorm in Chandigarh early morning is also attributed to western disturbance – extra-tropical storms originating in the Mediterranean and traveling thousands of miles to deliver winter rains to northwestern India. Senior Met department officials had been warning of the approaching western disturbance.

“Wishing you huge congratulations on your Emmy win! Such a well-deserved and wonderful accomplishment!” she wrote, signing off as “your friends at Purple Pebble Pictures” – referring to her production company.

Responding to her support, Vir tweeted his gratitude to Priyanka for “every door you’ve opened for the rest of us.” He acknowledged her towering impact as “the global Indian” who paved the way for others.

Vir won the International Emmy for Best Comedy with his Netflix special ‘Vir Das: Landing’ competing against the British hit ‘Derry Girls’. By taking his unique brand of socially-conscious humor to audiences worldwide, he has elevated Indian standup’s global stature.

Earlier this year, when comparisons were drawn to Priyanka’s epic run abroad, Vir candidly admitted he has miles to go to match her level. Yet his win reaffirms how Indian talent can successfully transcend geographical boundaries.

Beyond the Emmy glory, Vir counts films like ‘Delhi Belly’, ‘Go Goa Gone’ and more in his repertoire. But landing comedy specials on Netflix has enabled his international rise as brown comedy’s flagbearer.

And as Priyanka’s gesture showed, Vir’s win resonated with the Indian creative community as an inspirational milestone. In chasing their dreams, every artist hopes to one day pay it forward for future generations.

The white oil manufacturer debuted at ₹295 on BSE, up 75 percent over the issue price of ₹169 per share. On NSE, it opened at ₹298, surging 76 percent.

In early trade, Gandhar Oil prices skyrocketed further to hit the upper circuit limit of 20 percent at ₹344, doubling investor wealth within minutes.

The enthusiastic IPO response mirrors positive sentiment around the lubricants and petro product supplier. Its public offer last week got subscribed 64 times, led by huge interest from institutional buyers.

Gandhar Oil counts leading FMCG names like P&G, Dabur, and Marico among its customers. Its capacity expansions across units also garnered investor interest.

The company plans to use IPO proceeds for debt payment, plant equipment purchases, and working capital needs. Its revenue grew 15 percent in FY23 on widening margins.

Analysts say Gandhar Oil’s established B2B model provides stable growth visibility justifying premium valuations. Its niche positioning in an otherwise commoditized oil refining space also works in favor.

As market dynamics improve, the company aims to diversify further into allied specialty chemicals and downstream products. While competition is set to heighten, Gandhar Oil’s first-mover advantage and proven execution abilities could help maintain leadership.
