'Animal' Set To Trump Rs 250 Crore Mark In India By Day 5

Continuing its rampage at the box office, Ranbir Kapoor’s crime action drama ‘Animal’ is all set to surpass ₹250 crore net collections from Indian theatricals alone by the end of day 5.

As per early estimates, the Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial minted around ₹39.9 crore on day 4, propelling the total domestic total to a mammoth ₹241 crore so far.

After denting 100 crore globally on opening day itself, the film raked in over ₹63 crore, ₹66 crore, and ₹71 crore on subsequent days in India.

Despite unfavorable reviews over its problematic premise, ‘Animal’ has struck a chord with the masses, especially Ranbir Kapoor fans. Night and evening occupancy remains remarkably high in major cities showing the film’s manic craze.

‘Animal’ sees Ranbir play an intense, vengeance-driven protagonist whose moral compass goes for a toss after he loses a parent. Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, and Rashmika Mandanna also star in key roles.

Some critics have called out the film for glorifying crime and normalizing ‘toxic masculinity’ – an allegation director Vanga has constantly battled after ‘Arjun Reddy’ and its remake ‘Kabir Singh’ as well.

Spotify To Lay Off 17% Staff Despite Posting First Profitable Quarter

Audio streaming giant Spotify has decided to trim its global workforce by 17% amid a slowdown in advertising spending, a move that will impact over 1,500 employees.

This move comes as a cost-cutting measure amid significantly slower economic growth. ( Image Source: Getty )

In a message to staff, CEO Daniel Ek cited the gap between costs and “our current operational costs” as the key factor behind the restructuring, despite the company earning its first quarterly operating profit of €32 million in Q3 2022.

“I realize that for many, a reduction of this size will feel surprisingly large given the recent positive earnings report and our performance,” Ek wrote.

Over the past two years, Spotify invested heavily in content and podcasts to transform into an audio company, now reaching 456 million users globally.

But Ek admitted they have more work to do on building sustainable profits. Hence efficiency has become an urgent priority along with maintaining growth.

Impacted staff will receive invites for one-on-one conversations and formal layoff notifications starting Tuesday. The average severance being offered is approximately five months, based on tenure.

The Swedish company has nearly 10,000 employees currently, indicating over 1,500 job cuts in the process.

The restructuring comes amid a pullback in digital advertising spending by brands given the murky economic outlook. However, Spotify is better insulated compared to peers reliant majorly on ads.

Chennai airport has been shut for arrival and departure services till 11 PM owing to severe weather conditions, prompting the diversion of incoming flights to Bengaluru.

Sources at KIA operator BIAL said flights by Indigo, SpiceJet, Etihad, Lufthansa, Gulf Air, and more had to be redirected from Chennai where over 70 flights were canceled altogether.

Officials said other airports like Tirupati and Visakhapatnam were also facing disruptions with delays and cancellations due to the inclement weather triggered by cyclone Mandous.

The storm has battered Chennai and nearby districts with heavy rains, uprooting trees and flooding low-lying areas. A public holiday has been announced in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts on Tuesday.

All educational institutions, government offices, and banks will remain shut here as the cyclone is expected to become a severe storm soon. Parts of Odisha have also reported light to moderate rainfall.

The Met Department has forecast very heavy rainfall in TN and Puducherry over the next 24 hours with winds touching 85-95 kmph.

Google Delays Chatbot Launch Over Non-English Queries Handling Issues

Google Delays Chatbot Launch Over Non-English Queries Handling Issues

Google has postponed the public release of its much-touted AI chatbot ‘Gemini’ to January over reported issues in responding to non-English queries reliably.

Earlier in November, Pichai emphasized that the company’s primary focus is expediting the release of Gemini 1.0. ( Image Source: Getty )

CEO Sundar Pichai decided to push back this week’s scheduled launch to allow more fine-tuning of the system, as per an internal email revealed by The Information.

This comes barely a month after Pichai asked teams to fast-track Gemini’s release to compete with chatbots like OpenAI’s popular ChatGPT.

Google aimed to leapfrog ChatGPT with Gemini, its first conversational AI bot built from scratch to seamlessly understand multi-modal inputs like text, images, and videos.

However, handling non-English languages has emerged as a persisting challenge in the final testing stages – an area where human oversight still outweighs AI comprehension currently.

“We’re already at work on Gemini – our next model created for multimodal efficiency and innovations like memory and planning,” Google had said earlier regarding its AI aspirations.

The delay indicates how achieving robustness across languages remains a key obstacle, even for tech giants like Google, in launching reliable chatbots.

It also gives rival OpenAI more leeway after its CEO Sam Altman got reinstated following an employee rebellion over his controversial removal from the board last month.

The deceased was an instructor and a cadet who were on a Pilatus PC 7 Mk II aircraft that suddenly crashed within the Academy premises, IAF officials stated.

“It is with deep regret the IAF confirms both pilots onboard sustained fatal injuries,” the IAF said in a release. “A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause.”

No damages or injuries were reported from the ground at the crash site that was contained within AFA’s premises.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “Anguished by this accident near Hyderabad. It is deeply saddening that two pilots have lost their lives. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the bereaved families.”

The IAF has suffered several accidents this year raising concerns over preparedness and maintenance. Further investigation will reveal whether technical defects or human error were the causes of today’s crash.

11 Climbers Found Dead After Indonesia Volcano Eruption, Alert Raised To Level-2

Eleven climbers were found dead while three survivors were rescued after the Mount Merapi volcano erupted in Indonesia on Sunday, authorities confirmed.

The 2,891-metre-high volcano, located in West Sumatra province, spewed scorching ash up to 3 km into the atmosphere on Sunday afternoon. This led to a level-2 volcano alert being issued, banning people from going within 3 km of the crater.

A 75-member climbing group was exploring areas around the volcano when the sudden eruption took place. Rescue ops had to be temporarily halted due to safety issues.

“It’s too dangerous to continue searching now,” said Jodi Haryawan, spokesperson for the local search team that found 11 dead bodies on Monday. The team also rescued 3 survivors.

Earlier 49 other climbers from the affected group had been successfully evacuated, many requiring treatment for burn injuries.

Situated on the seismically active Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, Indonesia has 127 active volcanoes. Their periodic eruptions have repeatedly caused major loss of human lives while damaging infrastructure.
