Belarus President Blames US Sanctions For Iran’s Raisi’s Death

0

Despite Iran’s denial of any foul play in Ebrahim Raisi’s helicopter crash, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has blamed Western sanctions as a contributing factor to the Iranian president’s death.

Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, made these remarks during a joint press conference with Putin.

Raisi, 63, died on May 19 when his helicopter caught fire after hitting an elevated area in the mountainous northwest of Iran. He was laid to rest in his hometown of Mashhad on Thursday.

“As a person, and not as a president, I will say that the vile, disgusting position of the United States led to this,” Lukashenko stated, as reported by Almayadeen.

“I mean, first of all, the sanctions. These scoundrels had no right to impose sanctions against ships, planes, and helicopters that transport people… They banned their companies from servicing Raisi’s helicopter. Therefore, this is also their fault.”

Lukashenko also argued that the helicopter’s age, whether 40 or 50 years old, was irrelevant. “Maybe it has been used only three times in these fifty years; it would be fine if properly serviced. But they forbade their companies from maintaining it. Therefore, this is also their fault,” he said, according to Belarus Today.

Meanwhile, a preliminary report by the general staff of the armed forces, published by the official IRNA news agency late on Thursday, indicated that no bullet holes or similar impacts were observed on the helicopter wreckage, AFP reported. The army noted that more time is needed to investigate the crash and promised to provide more details later.

On Saturday, Chhattisgarh Police reported that three Maoists were killed in two anti-Naxal operations conducted by security forces in Sukma and Bijapur districts of the Bastar region. Weapons, a cache of explosives, and Maoist-related materials were recovered from both encounter sites, according to the Hindustan Times.

The identities of the three deceased Maoists have not yet been determined, the Chhattisgarh Police noted.

The first incident occurred in Sukma district near Belpochcha village when a joint team of security personnel was on an anti-Naxal mission, said Kiran Chavan, Superintendent of Police, Sukma.

“The operation began on Friday night based on intelligence about a Maoist gathering in the forests of Belpochcha, Jinetong, and Uskawaya villages in response to their bandh call on May 26,” Chavan stated, as reported by Hindustan Times.

“When the patrolling team approached Belpochcha, an exchange of gunfire ensued. After the shooting stopped, a Maoist’s body, a weapon, a cache of explosives, and Maoist-related materials were recovered from the scene,” Chavan added.

It is significant that the Maoists had called for a bandh on May 26 in the Bastar region to protest alleged fake encounters.

The second encounter, according to Chhattisgarh Police, occurred in a forest area of Bijapur district.

In a statement, Bijapur police reported that two Maoists were killed by security forces in the jungles near Jammemarka and Kamkanaar villages during an anti-Naxal operation.

“An anti-Naxal operation was conducted on Saturday based on intelligence about the presence of senior Maoist leaders, including Pandru, the supply-in-charge of the West Bastar Division of CPI (Maoist), and 15 other Maoists camping in the jungle. A district reserve guard (DRG) team reached their camp, resulting in a firefight. When the shooting ceased, the bodies of two Maoists were recovered,” the statement read.

Beijing Says United States Can’t Point Fingers at China

A day after conducting intense military drills around Taiwan, China warned the US that pursuing “Taiwan’s independence” is a “dead end” and “will only backfire.” This statement, made on Friday, followed reports of a US official urging Beijing to exercise restraint regarding the cross-strait situation.

“There will be a dead end for those who engage in ‘Taiwan independence’, and to connive support for ‘Taiwan independence’ will only backfire” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Friday.

China emphasized that the US is not in a position to criticize its stance on Taiwan. “Nothing will deter us from defending our sovereignty and territorial integrity, and we will do anything necessary to thwart any move aimed at ‘Taiwan independence,'” stated Wang Wenbin.

Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and has threatened to use force to control it. Wenbin reiterated that efforts toward Taiwan’s independence are destined to fail. “Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. This is both a historical fact and the true status quo, and will not change in the future,” he said.

Responding to a question about the military drills and US remarks, Wenbin asserted that “Taiwan is China’s Taiwan” and that it is not for the US to comment on the matter.

He also added that the main issue causing tensions across the Taiwan Strait is the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Taiwan, which seeks US support for its independence.

“The root cause of the tensions across the Taiwan Strait is the DPP authorities’ attempt to rely on the US to seek independence. They have been trying to contain China with Taiwan as a pretext. If the US truly wants to uphold peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, it should clearly and unequivocally abide by the One China principle and oppose Taiwan independence,” said Wenbin.

Wenbin stressed that supporting Taiwan’s independence would lead to trouble and reiterated China’s commitment to defending its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, firmly opposing Taiwan’s independence.

Following the swearing-in of Taiwan’s Lai Ching-te as President, China launched two-day military drills on Thursday surrounding Taiwan, which it described as “punishment” for “separatist acts,” according to CNN.

During the drills, dozens of Chinese fighter jets carrying live ammunition conducted mock strikes against “high-value military targets” of the “enemy,” alongside destroyers, frigates, and missile speedboats.

NASA All Set to Send Indian Astronaut to International Space Station

US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti announced on Friday that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will soon begin training Indian astronauts as part of the collaborative effort with the International Space Station (ISS). Garcetti also stated that the US plans to send an Indian astronaut to the ISS by the end of this year.

Referring to the US’s commitment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his 2023 visit to the US, Garcetti affirmed that the mission to send an Indian astronaut to the ISS is progressing as planned.

“We promised when PM (Narendra) Modi came (to the US in 2023) that by the end of this year, we will do this and our mission is still on track to be able to go in space this year,” PTI quoted the US envoy.

Garcetti provided an update on the joint India-US space project, NISAR, an Earth-observing mission between NASA and ISRO. He announced that the NISAR project is set to launch by the end of the year.

Speaking at the “US-India Commercial Space Conference: Unlocking Opportunities for US & Indian Space Startups” in Bangalore, Garcetti mentioned that NASA will commence advanced training for Indian astronauts this year or next to support the joint mission to the ISS. He also praised the Indian space agency’s efficiency, highlighting the cost-effective landing of ‘Chandrayaan-3’ on the Moon last year.

Additionally, Garcetti discussed the potential advancement of nuclear reactor projects in Mithi Virdi, Gujarat, and Kovvada, Andhra Pradesh, after the Lok Sabha Elections in 2024. He noted that the companies involved in building these reactors have raised concerns about the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act of 2010, which mandates prompt compensation for victims of nuclear incidents under a no-fault liability regime.

NIA Arrests the 5th Accused in Bengaluru Rameshwaram Cafe blast

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday arrested another individual in connection with the Rameshwaram Cafe blast case in Bengaluru. This marks the fifth arrest in the investigation.

The accused has been identified as 35-year-old Shoaib Ahmed Mirza, also known as Chhotu. He is a former convict in a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror conspiracy case.

“Thirty-five-year-old Shoaib Ahmed Mirza alias Chhotu, a resident of Hubbali city in Karnataka, was previously convicted in a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror conspiracy case,” the agency said in a statement as per news agency PTI.

According to NIA investigations, Mirza allegedly became involved in this new conspiracy after his release from prison. In 2018, he reportedly befriended and introduced Abdul Matheen Taahaa to an online handler believed to be overseas, the agency stated.

“Mirza further provided an e-mail ID for encrypted communication between the handler and Abdul Matheen Taahaa, who was arrested on April 12 from his hideout in Kolkata (West Bengal) along with co-accused Mussavir Hussain Shazib,” the NIA was quoted by PTI as saying.

On March 1, a low-intensity blast occurred at the renowned Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru, injuring at least 10 people. This latest arrest comes three days after a major crackdown across four states in connection with the Rameshwaram Cafe blast case.

“In a coordinated action, NIA teams searched 11 locations in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, andAndhra Pradesh. Extensive searches were conducted at the premises linked with 11 suspects in the case, in which an IED explosion at the café on ITPL Road, Brookefield in Bengaluru, Karnataka had left several customers and staff members injured,” the NIA said in a statement.

The agency also mentioned that the premises of 11 suspects were searched, including individuals convicted in the 2012 LeT conspiracy case in Bengaluru and Hubli Districts. These targeted searches resulted in the seizure of various digital devices and documents, which the NIA is thoroughly examining.

China’s Biggest Military Drills Happening Around Taiwan

Recently, China held its most expansive military drills of the year around Taiwan, just a few days after Lai-Ching Te took over as the island’s new president.

The drills on Thursday were intended to “serve as a strong punishment for the separatist acts of ‘Taiwan independence’ forces and a stern warning against the interference and provocation by external forces,” the official Xinhua News Agency reported, citing a military spokesman.

The “external references” line here likely refers to the United States, Taiwan’s main military backer. President Joe Biden has often said that the US would do anything to defend the democracy of 23 million people if attacked, while China has promised to bring the island country under its control, by force if necessary as well.

The military exercise by China raised pressure on Lai, who took office on the island and made the bulk of the world’s most advanced chips. He has recently said in his inaugural address that China should drop its threat of war, and neighter side of the strait was subordinate to the other.

China has already signaled its displeasure with Lai taking control of the office, saying his speech “sent a dangerous signal of seeking independence.” The country also criticized US Secretary of State Antony Blinken for congratulating Lai, sanctioning a former US congressman who supported Taipei, and hitting US defense companies with symbolic sanctions.

China’s military drills add to the complications for the new government in Taipei. Opposition lawmakers are now pushing through changes to the law that are aimed towards reining in its powers, bringing thousands of people onto the streets of Tuesday night. Those demonstrations are likely to continue on Friday when the legislature takes its next step forward on the changes.

The Chinese drills were carried out in the Taiwan Strait: north, south, east of Taiwn., and around the offshore islands of Kinmen, Wuqiu, Matsu, and Dongyin, Xinhua said.

Although it’s not clear how many ships and planes were involved in the process, China’s military has not held exercises in so many locations around Taiwan since April of last year.

Nirmala Sitharaman Believes Eastern India Has Suffered Due to Freight Policy

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said at a televised press briefing in Patna on Tuesday that a policy aimed at making minerals priced at the same level across the country that existed for four decades up to 1992-93 weakened the incentive for industries to be set up close to mining regions, affecting the development prospects of mineral-rich eastern states.

Nirmala Sitharaman says the region, which suffered due to the “fight equalization policy,” is now at the core of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government’s development strategy.

“Today we say, we also said it in Parliament on the day of the vote on account, we are building a developed India by 2047 and that journey of progress will powered by all the eastern states,”

The minister explained that the freight equalization policy aimed to encourage factories to be built anywhere in India by subsiding mineral transportation costs, and as a result, coal mined in Bihar cost the same in Mumbai.

This policy has had disastrous effects on states of eastern India as the policy weakened incentives to set up industries close to mining regions, encouraging factories to be set up further away and negatively impacting these states’ economic prospects. That also led to people moving out in search of employment, the minister.

The minister explained that the Modi government has consistently prioritized the eastern part of India, as captured in the interim budget for 2024-25.

Left-wing extremism in this region has significantly declined during the Modi government, as seen by the 76% drop in occurrences between 2010 and 2022.

Sitharaman added that one indication of the government’s attention to the area is the resuscitation of state-run fertiliser facilities in the area during the NDA administration. The three fertilizer facilities located at Barauni, Sindri, and Gorakhpur have a total capacity of 38.1 million tonnes per year. Reviving the urea factory in Barauni, Bihar, came at a ₹9,500 crore cost.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk visited India on Sunday to launch the Starklink satellite service in the country. His recent trips to the archipelago will likely pave the way for a trip to Sri Lanka as well. The tech billionaire was spotted exploring opportunities for Starlink services with Sri Lanka’s President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Elon’s visit to Indonesia comes days after his surprise trip to China and nearly a month after he canceled his visits to India. Musk initially planned to visit India between 20th April and 22nd April. However, these were canceled at the last minute, and there has been no update on Tesla’s entry into India so far. According to some reports, Elon Musk has yet to inform India about its plan to enter the Indian Market.

The Tesla CEO canceled his visit to India in May, citing heavy obligation. While announcing the sudden cancellation, Musk also mentioned his plans to visit the country later this year.

“Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year,” wrote Elon Musk on X.

It’s worth keeping in mind that the Tesla CEO was set to make some big announcements about the $3 billion EV factory in India, and some developments related to Starlink.

Musk was also expected to meet executives from several space startups in Delhi. The tech entrepreneur is also awaiting regulatory clearances from the Indian government before launching Starlink satellite internet services nationwide. Days after Rohan Patel, Tesla’s public policy officer, resigned, Musk’s trip to India was canceled. According to Reuters, Patel was a key figure in developing Tesla’s aspirations to enter the Indian market.

Day, after Canada decided to arrest the fourth Indian connected with the murder of Khalistnai separatist-terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, opened up about the investigation and said that the Canadian authorities didn’t share anything with India to look into the issue.

While addressing a seminar on Indian Capital Markets at the NSR in Mumbai, S Jaishankar stated, “We are open to investigating it, but to date, we have never received anything specific and worthy of being pursued by our investigative agencies.”

S Jaishankar’s remarks come after the day the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team of Canada’s British Columbia province arrested an Indian nation in connection with the June 2023 killing of Hardee Singh Nijjar.

“We pursued the evidence and gained sufficient information for the BC Prosecution Service to charge Amandeep Singh with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder,” the police statement said. “This arrest shows the nature of our ongoing investigations to hold responsible those who played a role in the homicide of Hardeep Singh Nijjar,” it added.

Earlier, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested Kamalpreet Singh, Karan Brar, and Karanpreet Singh and charged them with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed by bike-borne assailants last year outside Surrey’s Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in June of the previous year. He was labeled as an “individual terrorist” by the Indian authorities and played a crucial role in conducting anti-India activities in Canada.

The killing evoked a massive diplomatic row between Canada and India after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the “agents of Indian governments” of the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India rejected the Canadian PM’s claims, called them “absurd”, and even expelled multiple Canadian diplomats from the country.

Indian Miltary Has Taken The Decision to Exit From Maldives At President Mohamed Muizzu’s Request

India has decided to exit its military from Maldives after a demand from President Mohamed Muizzu, who is more focused on strengthening his country’s ties with China.

Indian troops, who were accompanied by two helicopters and an aircraft, were involved in marine surveillance, search and rescue,e and medical evacuation operations on the island.

The announcement coincided with a visit by Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer to India, the first visit by a senior official since Muizzu took office in November last year. The foreign ministers of Maldives and India met in New Delhi on Thursday. Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told his Maldives counterpart, Moosa Zameer, that India has proven to be a key provider of development assistance, including medical care, infrastructure projects, and health facilities.

Jaishankar was quoted saying, “It is in our common interest that we reach an understanding on how best we can take our relationship forward,”

Tensions between both countries have grown since Pro-China Muizzu came to power last year. He immediately asked India to take its troops out of the island by 10th May 2024 and decided to replace them with civilians trained for those activities. At least 75 Indian military personnel were stationed in the Maldives.

Muizzu ran for president on the theme of “India out,” accusing his predecessor of compromising the country’s sovereignty by giving India too much influence. After taking that office, Muizziu visited China and said the small size of the Maldives doesn’t allow India to bully it.

Since coming into power, Muizzu’s government has entered into several agreements with China to boost its economic ties and even sidelined India in several projects.

The Maldives decided to sign a military assistance pact with China in March. Maldives has allowed a Chinese research vessel to dock at its port, right in India’s backyard.
