‘Sanchar Saathi’ App To Be Pre-Installed on Phones as Govt Issues New Security Directive

Sanchar Saathi

The Department of Telecommunications has directed all original equipment manufacturers and mobile importers to ensure that the Sanchar Saathi application comes pre-installed on every new handset that will be sold in India. This requirement applies to both devices made within the country and those brought in from abroad.

The application must appear immediately when a user switches on the phone for the first time, and its core features cannot be turned off. Companies such as Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo have been given a period of 90 days to meet this new mandate.

A senior official from the department clarified that rumors claiming the app cannot be removed from the device are completely false. The official stressed that the misinformation is being intentionally spread and has no factual basis.

Sanchar Saathi, launched in May 2023, provides several public safety services. Users can report and block lost or stolen phones, identify malicious web links, check how many mobile numbers are registered under their name, and verify trusted contact details of banks and financial institutions.

Officials believe that making the app available by default will simplify and speed up fraud reporting. At present, users often lose precious time visiting the website to file complaints or submit information about a stolen device.

When questioned about how someone would file a report if their phone was missing, the official explained that the system is advanced enough to identify a device without requiring the user to remember the IMEI number. The aim, they said, is to avoid placing any unnecessary burden on citizens.

The app will also allow people to verify whether a device is genuine, review active mobile connections under their name, and report suspicious calls or messages. Unlike the website, the mobile application will not require OTP verification on the device to function, which is expected to save crucial time in emergency situations.

The department noted that cyber fraud has caused financial losses of nearly ₹35,000 crore in the past three to four years. Officials added that they expect full cooperation from smartphone manufacturers in implementing this requirement.

Global Research Opportunities Expanded as Mann Govt Provides Free Travel and Accommodation for Young Scientists and Teachers

Punjab’s scientific community has received a major boost as the state government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, introduced a transformative initiative aimed at empowering young researchers. The newly launched “Young Scientists Travel Assistance Scheme” is being hailed as a landmark move that places Punjab’s emerging scientific talent on the global map.

Instead of allowing financial barriers to hinder progress, the government has chosen to actively support the next generation of innovators. This program, operated through the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST) as part of the STEM Outreach Program, focuses on a problem long faced in academic circles: many gifted researchers lack the resources to attend leading global conferences and present their work among international peers.

The scheme prioritizes scientists, technologists, and educators below the age of 45 working in Punjab’s universities, colleges, and research institutes. Only applicants with at least two research publications in recognized peer-reviewed journals such as Scopus, SCI, or Web of Science are eligible. By setting these criteria, the government ensures that support reaches those actively contributing to scientific advancement.

Through this initiative, selected applicants will receive up to ₹15,000 as travel assistance, covering half of their airfare or maintenance allowance, along with the registration fees required to participate in major national and international conferences, workshops, short-term training programs, seminars, and other academic gatherings. This exposure is expected to open doors for collaborations, provide access to modern research trends, and align Punjab’s scientific research with global standards and the state’s own developmental priorities.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has emphasized that this scheme symbolizes Punjab’s belief in the capabilities of its youth. He noted that scientific progress flourishes when young minds are encouraged to explore and participate in discussions that shape the future of technology and research worldwide. According to him, this assistance is not merely financial; it is an investment in the dreams and ambitions of young scholars who aspire to contribute meaningfully to society.

The initiative also reflects a broader shift in the governance of Punjab. Development is no longer restricted to constructing buildings or launching infrastructure projects. Instead, the focus has expanded to strengthening human capital and safeguarding the aspirations of younger generations. Unlike the past, when many well-intentioned schemes never moved beyond paperwork, visible change is now taking place in the state.

By introducing this program, the Punjab government has sent a clear message: talented youth will receive the support they need to grow. The scheme promises to nurture innovation, promote academic excellence, and enable Punjab’s researchers to compete globally with confidence. Citizens across the state are increasingly recognizing that promises are being translated into action, and that opportunities for progress are being created in real time.

BCCI Denies 'Approaching' Virat Kohli About Test Cricket Return - Here's What Official Said

Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Devajit Saikia has categorically dismissed widespread media reports suggesting the cricket board approached Virat Kohli about reversing his Test retirement decision.

Speculation intensified following India’s second home series loss within two years, a development many cricket observers consider damaging to India’s previously dominant home Test record. Media reports claimed the BCCI intended to request Virat Kohli reconsider his retirement from red-ball cricket amid India’s recent struggles.

BCCI Official Denial

Saikia clarified that no communication occurred with Virat Kohli regarding a Test return. “What’s being said about Virat Kohli is just a rumour. There has been no conversation with Kohli about this. Do not give weight to rumours. Nothing of that sort has happened,” the BCCI secretary told media on Sunday, November 30.

He emphasized that the board has not initiated any discussions on the matter, directly contradicting circulating reports about potential outreach to the former Test captain.

Pietersen’s Perspective

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen weighed in on social media, arguing that if senior players like Kohli and Rohit Sharma showed interest in Test returns, the board should seriously consider bringing them back.

“I don’t always believe what I read in the media or on social media. But, if it’s half true that both Virat and Rohit are considering playing Test cricket again, then it needs to be taken very very seriously. The survival of Test cricket is a hot topic of conversation and if the biggest stars in the game are wanting to play it again, they must play!” Pietersen wrote on X.

Current Status

Virat Kohli currently participates in only one international cricket format. The batsman recently returned to international cricket in ODIs against South Africa, performing impressively in Ranchi where he scored his 52nd ODI century. He formed a century-plus partnership with Rohit Sharma, contributing to India’s substantial first-match total.

The speculation reflects broader concerns about India’s Test cricket form and the potential role veteran players might play in stabilizing the team’s red-ball fortunes. However, official BCCI statements suggest no active efforts to recruit retired Test players currently exist.

Winter Session of Parliament to Open Today with 14 Bills, Opposition Flags Concerns

Winter Session

Winter Session: The central government convened an all-party meeting Sunday ahead of Parliament’s Winter Session, which begins Monday and runs through December 19 for 15 sittings—one of the shortest winter sessions in recent years compared to the usual 20 sittings.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged constructive debate, stating: “Since it’s the winter season, we hope everyone works with a cool head and avoids heated exchanges. Debate is part of Parliament and I hope there will be no disturbances. Working with a calm mindset will benefit the nation and ensure the session runs smoothly.”

Opposition’s Concerns

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi accused the government of deliberately curtailing parliamentary proceedings. “The winter session is only 19 days long, of which discussions can take place only for 15 days. This will likely be the shortest winter session ever. Therefore, it seems the government itself wants to derail Parliament,” he stated.

The opposition flagged multiple issues for discussion including electoral roll revisions, the recent Delhi blast, air pollution, economic security, and foreign policy matters. “The blast in Delhi is, in some ways, a testimony to the failures of our legal and home affairs departments,” Gogoi said, adding that security of voter lists and election integrity should be discussed.

Legislative Agenda in Winter Session

The government plans to introduce 14 bills, headlined by the Atomic Energy Bill, 2025, which seeks to regulate atomic energy use while enabling private sector participation in nuclear operations.

The Higher Education Commission of India Bill, 2025, aims to establish a central commission promoting university autonomy, transparent accreditation mechanisms, and stronger regulatory oversight for academic standards.

Other significant legislation includes the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2025; Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Bill, 2025; Securities Markets Code Bill, 2025, consolidating three existing acts into unified market code; Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025; and Arbitration and Conciliation (Amendment) Bill, 2025, proposing revisions following recent Supreme Court observations.

Additional bills cover corporate laws, national highways, central excise, and a Health Security & National Security Cess.

The government recently withdrew plans to empower the President to directly issue Chandigarh regulations after cross-party objections, demonstrating the political significance of coordination forums.

SIR Date Extended: 7-Day Extension for Voter Enrollment Across All States; Draft Roll Ready Dec 16

SIR
SIR

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) schedule by seven days across 12 states and Union Territories, providing voters additional time to verify their electoral roll entries ahead of upcoming elections.

The extension affects Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. The order supersedes the Commission’s earlier directive on the ongoing SIR process.

Booth-level officers and agents will also receive seven additional days to compile and share lists identifying absent, shifted, deceased, and duplicate voters, supporting electoral roll accuracy efforts.

SIR Revised Timeline

The Commission has adjusted key deadlines as follows:

The enumeration period extends to December 11, 2025 (Thursday), with rationalization and re-arrangement of polling stations completing by the same date. Electoral roll updates and draft preparation will occur December 12-15, 2025 (Friday through Monday).

The draft electoral roll publication date is December 16, 2025 (Tuesday). The period for filing claims and objections runs from December 16, 2025, through January 15, 2026 (Thursday).

Notice procedures including issuance, hearings, and verification will span December 16, 2025, to February 7, 2026 (Saturday). During this phase, Election Returning Officers will simultaneously address claims, objections, and enumeration forms.

Purpose and Impact

The SIR represents the Election Commission’s ongoing initiative to maintain accurate, current, and inclusive electoral rolls, particularly preceding crucial state elections.

The extension allows voters additional opportunities to verify registration details, file objections, or correct voter list entries.

Voter Engagement

Officials emphasized that residents in affected states and Union Territories should utilize the extended schedule to ensure electoral roll accuracy. The additional time aims to prevent eligible voters from missing future election opportunities due to registration issues or administrative oversights.

The revision process forms part of comprehensive electoral preparation protocols designed to maximize voter participation while maintaining electoral roll integrity. Accurate rolls are essential for conducting free and fair elections, enabling eligible citizens to exercise their democratic rights.

The extension acknowledges logistical challenges in completing thorough voter verification processes across diverse geographic and demographic contexts within the original timeline.

Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan posted an emotional tribute to Andre Russell following the all-rounder’s announcement Sunday that he is retiring from Indian Premier League playing duties after 12 seasons with the franchise.

Russell confirmed he will transition to KKR’s support staff as the team’s new “Power Coach” for the 2026 season while continuing to play in T20 leagues worldwide and remaining part of other Knight Riders franchises globally.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Heartfelt Message

Shah Rukh Khan acknowledged Russell’s contributions to KKR through social media, emphasizing the player’s unique connection to the franchise. “Thank you for the wonderful memories, Andre. Our Knight in shining armour!!! Your contribution to @KKRiders is one for the books… and here’s to another chapter in your fantastic journey as a sportsman… The power coach – passing down the wisdom, the muscle and of course the power down to our boys in purple and gold… And yes, any other jersey would indeed look weird on you my man… Muscle Russell for life! Love u… on behalf of the team and everyone who loves the sport!!” the KKR co-owner posted on X.

Distinguished IPL Career

Russell, who has participated in every IPL season since 2012, initially represented Delhi Daredevils during his first two editions before joining KKR. The West Indian all-rounder established himself as a formidable force known for explosive batting and crucial wicket-taking ability.

Across 140 IPL matches, Russell accumulated 2,651 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 174.18, including 12 fifties. His bowling contributions were equally impressive, claiming 123 wickets at an economy rate of 9.51 with one five-wicket haul.

Transition Timing

Russell’s retirement announcement came one day after Faf du Plessis, 41, declared he would skip this year’s IPL edition to participate in another league. KKR did not retain Russell ahead of the IPL 2026 mini auction, setting the stage for his transition to coaching duties.

The move allows Russell to leverage his extensive experience while maintaining his playing career in other T20 competitions globally, ensuring his expertise benefits the next generation of Knight Riders players through his new coaching role.

Cyclone Ditwah Claims 123 Lives in Sri Lanka, 130 Missing

Cyclone Ditwah: Torrential rainfall and flooding triggered by Cyclone Ditwah have killed 123 people across Sri Lanka, with 130 others still missing, the country’s Disaster Management Centre reported Saturday.

Director General Sampath Kotuwegoda confirmed that 43,995 people have been relocated to state-run welfare centers after their homes were destroyed during the week-long deluge. “Relief operations with the help of the armed forces are underway,” Kotuwegoda told reporters in Colombo.

Cyclone Ditwah Leaves Trail of Destruction

The weather system has affected the island since Monday, with the cyclone making landfall Wednesday and producing record rainfall. Although the system is now moving toward neighboring India, it has left massive destruction across Sri Lanka.

Flooding intensified in low-lying areas Saturday, prompting authorities to issue evacuation orders for residents along the Kelani River, which flows through Colombo into the Indian Ocean. The river burst its banks Friday evening, forcing hundreds to temporary shelters.

While rainfall subsided in most regions including the capital, northern parts of the island continued experiencing showers from Cyclone Ditwah’s residual effects.

Military Mobilized for Rescue Operations

The government has deployed armed forces to support rescue and relief efforts nationwide, utilizing military helicopters and boats to evacuate stranded residents. DMC officials indicated flood levels may exceed those from 2016, when 71 people died nationwide.

India Provides Aid

India dispatched a planeload of relief supplies early Saturday for cyclone victims. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the loss of life and pledged continued support.

“We stand ready to provide more aid and assistance as the situation evolves,” PM Modi stated on X.

Historical Context

This week’s weather-related death toll represents the highest since June of last year, when 26 people died following heavy rains. December flooding and landslides killed 17 people.

Sri Lanka’s most devastating flooding since 2000 occurred in June 2003, claiming 254 lives. The current disaster ranks among the country’s deadliest weather events in recent decades.

Authorities continue monitoring flood levels and coordinating relief efforts as communities assess damage and begin recovery operations. The DMC maintains emergency protocols while the weather system moves away from the island nation.

Salman Khan Claims Advertisement Featured Silver-Coated Cardamom Over Pan Masala Ad Row

Bollywood actor Salman Khan has submitted a detailed response to the Kota Consumer Court regarding allegations of misleading pan masala advertisements, asserting he endorsed silver-coated cardamom rather than gutkha or pan masala products.

The case originated from a complaint filed by Kota BJP leader and advocate Inder Mohan Singh Honey, who alleged Khan and Rajshree Pan Masala misled consumers through advertisements promoting “saffron-coated cardamom” and “saffron-coated pan masala.” The complainant questioned the authenticity of using genuine saffron in products priced at Rs 5 per pouch.

Legal Arguments Challenge Court Authority

Salman Khan’s representative, advocate Ashish Dubey, argued the Consumer Commission lacks jurisdiction over the matter, stating the actor is neither a manufacturer nor service provider for pan masala products. Dubey characterized Khan’s involvement as legally unjustified and accused the complainant of causing “unnecessary harassment” through false allegations.

The defense maintained that silver-coated cardamom does not classify as pan masala, fundamentally undermining the complaint’s basis.

Signature Authenticity Questioned

Complainant Pradeep Instructor Singh Hani has challenged the submitted response, claiming the signatures do not appear genuine. Hani requested the court order Khan’s personal appearance and verify the document’s authenticity.

Public Health Concerns Raised

Honey emphasized the broader implications of celebrity endorsements for tobacco-related products. “The company, Rajshree Pan Masala, and its brand ambassador, actor Salman Khan, claim that the product contains saffron and encourages young people to consume it. Salman Khan is a role model for many people,” Honey told ANI.

He contrasted Indian celebrity practices with international standards, stating, “celebrities or film stars in other countries don’t even promote cold drinks, but they are promoting tobacco and pan masala. I urge them not to spread the wrong message to the youth as pan masala is one of the leading causes of mouth cancer.”

The advocate warned such advertisements encourage youth consumption of harmful products linked to severe health consequences, particularly mouth cancer.

Case Proceedings Continue

The Kota Consumer Court has issued notices to both Salman Khan and Rajshree Pan Masala. The next hearing is scheduled for December 9, when the court will consider jurisdictional arguments, signature verification requests, and the substantive allegations regarding product classification and advertising standards.

Stubble burning accounted for 1.2 percent of pollution, with Saturday projections estimating vehicular emissions at 18.4 percent and stubble burning at 1.7 percent.

Forecast Indicates Continued Poor Conditions

The Air Quality Early Warning System predicts air quality will remain in the very poor range throughout the coming week, offering little respite for residents.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast fog for Saturday, with maximum temperatures around 26 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures near 11 degrees. Weather conditions are not expected to significantly alter pollution levels in the immediate term.

Amid Wedding Delay, Smriti Mandhana and Palash Muchhal Adjust Instagram Bios

Indian cricketer Smriti Mandhana and composer Palash Muchhal have postponed their November 23 wedding following health complications affecting both their families. The couple updated their Instagram bios with a nazar emoji amid widespread social media speculation about the delay.

Health Emergencies Prompt Postponement

The wedding was delayed after Smriti’s father, Shriniwas Mandhana, experienced a health scare requiring medical attention. Subsequently, Palash also fell ill with acidity and a viral infection, necessitating hospitalization.

Palash was initially admitted to a facility in Sangli before being transferred to SRV Hospital in Goregaon, Mumbai. Medical staff declared him fit for discharge on November 26.

Social Media Activity Fuels Speculation

Following the postponement announcement, users across platforms including Reddit, Instagram, and X noticed Smriti Mandhana had removed wedding-related content from her Instagram account, including engagement and proposal photographs. The deletions, combined with the couple’s limited public statements, generated substantial online discussion and rumor circulation.

The couple’s decision to add protective emoji symbols to their Instagram bios appears to address the attention and speculation surrounding their personal circumstances.

Teammate Provides Support

Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues has chosen to remain in India to support her close friend and teammate rather than return to Australia for Women’s Big Bash League commitments with the Brisbane Heat.

The WBBL franchise confirmed it granted Rodrigues permission to miss the tournament’s remainder to be present for Mandhana during this period. The decision reflects the strong bonds within the Indian women’s cricket team and prioritizes personal support over professional obligations.

No New Wedding Date Announced

Neither Smriti Mandhana nor Palash Muchhal have publicly announced a rescheduled wedding date. The couple has maintained relative privacy regarding their personal situation while dealing with family health matters and subsequent recovery.

The postponement follows what was expected to be a high-profile union between one of Indian cricket’s most prominent players and an established music composer. Mandhana remains one of India’s leading batters and a central figure in women’s cricket both domestically and internationally.

The couple’s families are reportedly focusing on recovery and health stabilization before making decisions about rescheduling the ceremony. Friends and colleagues from both cricket and entertainment industries have expressed support during this challenging period.
