Kamala Harris Sends Strong Message to Hamas

0

Vice President Kamala Harris criticized Hamas after six hostages were recently found dead, including Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin. In a statement from the White House, Harris expressed her condolences to Goldberg-Polin’s parents and denounced the terrorist organization.

Harris noted that she had met Goldberg-Polin’s parents, Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg-Polin, earlier this year. “When I met with Jon and Rachel earlier this year, I told them: You are not alone. That remains true as they mourn this terrible loss. Americans and people around the world will pray for Jon, Rachel, and their family and send them love and strength. As is said in the Jewish tradition, may Hersh’s memory be a blessing,” she stated.

“Hamas is an evil terrorist organization. With these murders, Hamas has even more American blood on its hands. I strongly condemn Hamas’ continued brutality, and so must the entire world. From its massacre of 1,200 people to sexual violence, taking of hostages, and these murders, Hamas’ depravity is evident and horrifying. The threat Hamas poses to the people of Israel—and American citizens in Israel—must be eliminated and Hamas cannot control Gaza. The Palestinian people too have suffered under Hamas’ rule for nearly two decades,” she added.

Harris emphasized that protecting American citizens is a top priority and affirmed that she and President Biden “will never waver in our commitment to free the Americans and all those held hostage in Gaza.”

On X (formerly Twitter), Harris shared that she and her husband, Doug Emhoff, had spoken with Goldberg-Polin’s parents following his death, expressing their “condolences following the brutal murder of their son by Hamas terrorists.” She reiterated, “As they mourn this terrible loss, they are not alone. Our nation mourns with them.”

Following the announcement of Goldberg-Polin’s death, President Biden also issued a strong statement condemning Hamas, while former President Donald Trump blamed the deaths on what he called Biden and Harris’ “poor” leadership on Truth Social.

Heavy Rains Devastate Andhra Pradesh and Telangana: Schools Closed, Train Services Disrupted

0

Recent heavy rains have wreaked havoc across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, causing widespread flooding and significant disruptions to daily life. Low-lying regions have been inundated, with roads submerged and rendered impassable. The intense downpour has also resulted in interruptions to train services and the closure of schools, particularly in Hyderabad, as authorities brace for more rainfall in the coming days.

Relief Efforts in Andhra Pradesh
In Andhra Pradesh, the heavy rains have resulted in devastating consequences, with at least eight fatalities reported due to flooding and landslides. Many residents from affected low-lying areas have been evacuated to safer locations. National and state disaster relief teams, along with local police, have successfully rescued approximately 80 people from various locations.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has been closely monitoring the situation, canceling all scheduled activities on Saturday due to the severe weather conditions. He has directed officials to immediately allocate Rs 3 crore to each district for relief operations.

Among the eight victims, five lost their lives in landslides in Mogalrajapuram, Vijayawada, where large boulders, dislodged by the heavy rain, crashed into two houses. In another tragic incident in Guntur district, a teacher and two students died when their car was swept away while attempting to cross an overflowing stream.

Most Affected Areas
The areas worst hit by the flooding in Andhra Pradesh include Vijayawada, Machilipatnam, Gudivada, Kaikaluru, Narasapuram, Amaravati, Mangalagiri, Nandigama, and Bhimavaram. The flooding has caused extensive damage to infrastructure and property across these regions, further exacerbating the crisis.

KC Tyagi Resigns as JD(U) Spokesperson Amid Tensions with BJP

0

KC Tyagi, a veteran spokesperson for the Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)], has resigned from his role following a series of public statements highlighting growing rifts between his party and its ally, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The JD(U) officially announced Tyagi’s resignation in a statement.

It is widely speculated that Tyagi’s frequent remarks, which often garnered national attention due to his experience and eloquence, were perceived as exacerbating tensions between JD(U) and BJP. His critical stance on several central government policies reportedly contributed to a strain in the alliance between the two parties.

New National Spokesperson Appointed

In the aftermath of Tyagi’s resignation, JD(U) president and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar appointed Rajiv Ranjan Prasad as the new national spokesperson. The party stated that Tyagi stepped down for “personal reasons,” though sources within the party suggest that his resignation was influenced by internal pressure related to his contentious comments.

KC Tyagi: A Prominent Voice for JD(U)

For years, Tyagi has been a key figure within JD(U), often acting as a liaison between the party and the national media. His resignation marks a significant shift in the party’s communication strategy, especially with the 2024 general elections on the horizon.

Tyagi’s departure underscores the underlying tensions between JD(U) and BJP, despite their continued alliance. The appointment of Rajiv Ranjan Prasad is expected to bring a fresh approach to JD(U)’s public messaging, while Tyagi’s exit may indicate a more cautious tone in the party’s future interactions with its principal political partner.

A full emergency was declared at Kolkata airport on Friday night after an engine of an IndiGo flight heading to Bengaluru failed mid-air. However, both runways were soon cleared, and the aircraft landed safely.

All passengers and crew members on board were unharmed.

According to The Times of India, citing airport sources, a passenger claimed to have seen flames coming from one of the engines, although there was no official confirmation from either the airline or airport authorities.

“All 173 people on board, including the crew, are safe,” an official stated.

Nilanjan Das, a passenger on the flight, told The Times of India that shortly after takeoff, he heard a strange noise and saw flames coming from one of the engines before the plane turned back towards Kolkata.

An airport official explained that the pilot of flight 6E 0573 reported an emergency engine failure just minutes after takeoff, prompting a full emergency declaration at 10:39 pm. The runway was quickly inspected and prepared, allowing the aircraft to land from either direction.

The plane safely landed on a single engine at 11:05 pm.

“An engine failure is a serious emergency, but it is not uncommon. Thankfully, the flight landed safely,” an official commented.

Similar incidents have occurred in the past:

  • In June, a passenger plane traveling from Queenstown to Melbourne made an emergency landing in Invercargill, New Zealand, after one of its engines caught fire, as reported by the New Zealand fire service. News agency PTI reported that the Virgin Australia Boeing 737-800 had to divert when an engine fire caused it to shut down mid-air.
  • In March, a United Airlines Boeing aircraft bound for Florida made an emergency landing in Texas shortly after takeoff due to a jet engine catching fire. Video footage showed sparks coming from beneath the aircraft’s left wing near the passenger windows.
  • Last year, an IndiGo flight from Patna to Delhi had to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff due to an issue with one of its engines. Anchal Prakash, the director of Patna airport, stated that three minutes after the Airbus 320 (6E 2433) took off, the flight reported one engine as inoperative, and the aircraft landed safely back at the airport.

Woman States BJP Workers Misbehaved on Vande Bharat Train

0

A chaotic incident erupted on the newly launched Meerut-Lucknow Vande Bharat Express on Saturday when a woman and her companion claimed they were harassed and mistreated by BJP workers on board.

The woman described the incident, stating that they were accosted while passing through a train coach to get food. According to her, a man blocked their way, asserting that the cabin was reserved for BJP members and that they were not permitted to pass through.

When they tried to return, the situation escalated into a heated argument and eventually a physical altercation.

“We were moving through the cabin to get food when an uncle stopped us, saying it was a BJP cabin and we couldn’t go through,” the woman told reporters on the Vande Bharat train. “As we were returning, they started arguing and pushing us, questioning why we were moving around the cabin so much. We are also associated with the BJP, but people like them bring shame to the party.”

Her companion, who identified themselves as BJP supporters and influencers invited to cover the train’s inauguration, expressed outrage over the incident. “BJP hired us as influencers. They treat the train like it’s their personal property and were misbehaving with my sister,” he said.

The incident quickly went viral on social media, with Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed condemning the behavior.

“This is completely unacceptable. The train is public property, not a private asset of the BJP,” she posted on X.

The Congress party also shared a video of the incident, stating, “This video shows the conduct, character, and true face of the BJP.”

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually flagged off the Meerut-Lucknow Vande Bharat Express, along with the Chennai Egmore-Nagercoil Vande Bharat Express and the Madurai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express.

The Meerut-Lucknow Vande Bharat Express will save passengers approximately one hour compared to the current fastest train between these two cities.

During the virtual inauguration, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the significant progress made by the railways in addressing long-standing issues and emphasized that the efforts will continue until the Indian Railways becomes synonymous with comfortable travel for all.

“Through years of hard work, the railways have made tremendous progress in solving long-standing problems and offering new solutions and hope. We will not rest until Indian Railways ensures comfortable travel for everyone,” Modi stated.

Kangana Talks About Rahul Gandhi’s Opinion On Her Upcoming Movie

0

Kangana Ranaut is currently busy promoting her upcoming film, Emergency. The actor, who is also a politician, will appear on a new episode of Aap Ki Adaalat with Rajat Sharma. In a promo clip shared on X (formerly Twitter), Kangana was asked whether Congress MP Rahul Gandhi might end up liking her movie. Her reaction to this question was quite amusing. Emergency is based on the life of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who was Rahul’s grandmother.

In the promo, when asked about her thoughts on Rahul Gandhi potentially liking Emergency, Kangana initially gave the audience a straight-faced look. She then remarked, “Agar woh ghar jaakar Tom & Jerry dekhte honge toh unhe kaise samajh ayegi (If he watches Tom & Jerry cartoons at home, how will he understand my film)?” In the teaser, Kangana also discussed why she chose to make a film on such a subject for her first solo directorial venture.

She explained, “Aap kehte toh hain ki woh controversial hain lekin it is also best kept secret. Humare generation ke paas jo he, uske baare mein koi information nahi hain (Even if you say it’s a controversial topic, it is also one of the best-kept secrets. Our generation doesn’t have any information about it).”

Recently, Kangana called Rahul Gandhi the “most dangerous man” who could “destroy the nation” if his aim of becoming Prime Minister is not realized. She wrote on X, “He is bitter, poisonous, and destructive…his agenda is that if he can’t be the Prime Minister, then he might as well destroy this nation. The Hindenburg report targeting our stock market that Rahul Gandhi was endorsing last night has turned out to be a damp squib.”

Emergency, which Kangana has directed and written, features a cast including Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik. The film is set for a theatrical release on September 6.

Gigi Hadid Heads Out on a Vacation with Bradley Cooper

0

Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper were spotted together for the first time during their ongoing family vacation in Sardinia. According to a report by Page Six, the supermodel was seen vacationing with Bradley’s daughter, Lea, for the first time on Thursday.

The report mentioned that the couple flew to Sardinia, Italy, on their private jet, accompanied by the actor’s 6-year-old daughter and his mother, Gloria Campano. Gigi was seen assisting Lea as she exited a black SUV, and then holding onto Bradley’s arm as they walked.

The group of four then boarded their private boat, joined by film producer Brian Grazer. Several photos from the boat showed Gigi with her arm around Cooper’s waist, and he was seen helping her with her belongings. The two appeared to be in good spirits as they chatted.

For the outing, Gigi wore a short-sleeved white T-shirt and faded jeans, while Bradley opted for a tight black T-shirt and joggers.

The previous week, Bradley was seen with Lea at Taylor Swift’s star-studded pool party at her Rhode Island mansion. Earlier in May, both Bradley and Gigi attended Taylor’s concert in Paris, cheering from a VIP booth as part of her European tour. The couple has yet to make their relationship official on the red carpet.

On the professional front, Bradley was last seen in the biographical drama “Maestro,” which he directed and starred in. He will next appear as an actor and director in “Is This Thing On?” alongside Will Arnett.

Jaishankar Talks About India-US Ties Value

0

New Delhi: India’s relationship with the United States is an “extremely valuable relationship,” according to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who also emphasized on Friday that New Delhi should not be deterred from developing its economic ties with Russia.

Jaishankar spoke at an event celebrating the release of the book “Strategic Conundrums: Reshaping India’s Foreign Policy” by former ambassador Rajiv Sikri, where he discussed India’s foreign policy and its relationships with neighboring countries and major global powers, including China, Russia, and the US.

He stated that, as acknowledged in the book, India’s relationship with the US is “extremely valuable” for strategic and economic reasons. He added, “I would argue that the US is crucial today for enhancing our multipolarity. If we seek decision-making space and freedom, we need countries that have an interest in us maintaining those margins.”

Jaishankar acknowledged the historical challenges of the India-US relationship, particularly from the 1950s to the 1980s. “The challenge for us is considering multipolarity and strategic autonomy. Given our history, we often view this in opposition to the US,” he explained.

He noted that the global reality has changed significantly. “The primary source of pressure is no longer the US. Our understanding of the US has evolved as the world has changed, and so has the US’s understanding of us.”

Jaishankar also highlighted areas of convergence in India-US relations, while noting that “India and the US, by their nature, will always have interests that differ and diverge.”

Regarding Russia, he stated that India must consider a “Eurasian balance,” calling it a core strategic necessity. He pointed out that India’s trade with Russia has increased fivefold and involves more than just oil purchases. “There is an economic complementarity between India and Russia,” he said, referring to India’s increased imports of discounted Russian crude since 2022.

“We should not be intimidated from leveraging the benefits of this complementarity,” he emphasized. Jaishankar noted that Russia is now adopting its own “look east” policy and has altered its global approach since 2022, which India should “understand and capitalize on.”

On the issue of Pakistan, Jaishankar declared that the “era of uninterrupted dialogue” is over, and regarding Jammu and Kashmir, he stated that the abrogation of Article 370 “is a settled matter,” referencing the Indian government’s move to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019.

Referring to India’s concerns over Pakistan’s support of cross-border terrorism, he stated, “Actions have consequences.” While the book suggests that India may be content to maintain the current state of its relationship with Pakistan, Jaishankar added, “Maybe yes, maybe no. What I want to convey is that we are not passive, and we will respond whether events move in a positive or negative direction.”

Addressing China, with which India has been in a military standoff at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) since 2020, Jaishankar mentioned that New Delhi has made significant efforts to “address the border infrastructure gap,” which is crucial for maintaining peace and stability in the border regions.

Top Indian Runner Parvej Khan Fails Dope Test

0

Top Indian middle-distance runner Parvej Khan, who recently gained attention in India for his performances in the NCAA circuit in the United States, has been provisionally suspended after failing a doping test.

The 19-year-old Khan could face a maximum ban of four years if found guilty of doping.

“Yes, he (Parvej Khan) has been provisionally suspended (by NADA) after failing a doping test,” a top source familiar with the matter told PTI on Friday. The start date of Khan’s provisional suspension by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) is currently unknown, and the specific banned substance has not been confirmed.

It is likely that his sample was collected during the National Inter-State Championships held from June 27 to 30 in Panchkula, where he was competing in a domestic event for the first time since the National Inter-State Championships in Bhubaneswar in June 2023. During the Panchkula event, Khan won the men’s 1500m gold with a time of 3:42.95, although he missed the Paris Olympics qualifying standard of 3:33.50 by a significant margin.

Khan had been celebrated as a rising star in Indian athletics after becoming the first Indian to qualify for a track event final at the NCAA Championships in the United States earlier this year. He is currently studying at the University of Florida on a scholarship.

Hailing from a poor farming family in Chahalka village in the Mewat region of Haryana, less than 100km from New Delhi, Khan won the 1500m gold at the 2022 National Games in Gandhinagar with a personal best of 3:40.89. He also clinched the 800m gold at the U-16 Nationals in Mangalagiri, Andhra Pradesh, in 2019 and took bronze in the same event at the Khelo India Youth Games (U-18) the following year. His first senior victory came in the 1500m at the National Open Championships in Warangal in 2021.

Khan won a silver in the 1500m at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Chennai in 2022 and took gold in the same event at the National Open in Bengaluru that year. He set a personal best time of 3:36.21 in the 1500m at the Portland Track Festival on June 9 in the USA, the second-fastest time by an Indian, just behind Jinson Johnson’s national record of 3:35.24 set in 2019.

Alibaba Manages to Win China’s Trust After 3 Years Long Scrutiny

0

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. has received the endorsement of China’s antitrust authority over three years after a significant investigation into its online activities, indicating that Beijing is eager to show its support for the country’s major internet companies.

The State Administration for Market Regulation announced that Alibaba, China’s leading e-commerce company, has ended the monopolistic practices that triggered the investigation more than three years ago. The company has stopped imposing exclusive agreements on merchants, enhanced services for customers, and promoted competition among online platforms. Following this announcement, Alibaba’s shares rose over 4% in pre-market trading in New York.

This official endorsement comes amid increasing calls from Beijing for support of private companies and the technology sector, a sentiment that has grown stronger as China struggles to recover from a post-Covid economic downturn. Since 2023, government officials have indicated a more lenient approach toward the private sector compared to the stricter regulatory environment of 2020 and 2021, during which various agencies launched campaigns to curb the influence of China’s internet giants and their billionaire founders.

The antitrust regulator began its investigation into Alibaba in 2020 as part of a broader effort that eventually extended to industries including ride-hailing, online education, and e-commerce. Less than a year later, Alibaba was fined a record $2.8 billion for abusing its market dominance. On Friday, the antitrust agency praised Alibaba’s “effective results” from its three-year rectification process, which was required when the fine was imposed. The regulator also stated that it will continue to guide Alibaba, regulate its operations, and help improve its compliance.

“This marks a new beginning for Alibaba,” the company said in a statement. “Moving forward, we will continue to focus on innovation, adhere to compliance, increase investment in technology, support the healthy development of the platform economy, and create more value for society.”

However, the effects of the regulatory crackdown still linger. Funding for new startups has slowed as entrepreneurs and investors, wary of the severity of the campaign, shift their focus to areas like chipmaking and artificial intelligence that align with Beijing’s priorities. The previously dynamic industry has become more cautious about pursuing new growth opportunities to avoid attracting further regulatory attention.

The industry is also currently dealing with a decline in consumer spending. In a recent sign of concern for global markets about China’s economic health, Temu-owner PDD Holdings Inc. surprised investors on Monday with an unexpectedly bleak outlook. Both PDD—which gained popularity with its low-priced goods during China’s downturn—and Alibaba reported revenues that fell short of estimates.
